On Monday, Aug. 25, 2025 at 4:15 a.m., the Chadron Police Department was called to the area of Fourth Street and Pine Street for a motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival, Officers located a pickup truck in a field south of Fourth Street that had struck a metal structure/pole style barn. The pickup was present at the accident scene, with nobody around.

The officers began their investigation and it was learned the pickup had been stolen earlier in the morning between 1:24 a.m. and 2:24 a.m. from a residence located on the 800 block of King Street. Damage to the pickup was estimated to be approximately $20,000. Damage to the metal structure/pole barn was estimated to be approximately $5,000.

Another accident was later reported on the 500 block of King Street, where it was learned that the stolen vehicle had struck a parked vehicle, likely near the time it was stolen. The parked vehicle received approximately $1,500 in damage to the driver’s side. Additionally, the Chadron Police Department received numerous reports of vehicle break-ins and a couple thefts from within vehicles that happened over the night.

Officers began canvasing the area and using images from home surveillance systems provided by the public to assist in identifying the suspects. As a result, two juvenile males were located that became suspects in the theft of the motor vehicle. Both juveniles had been consuming alcoholic beverages at the time of the officer’s contact with them. The juveniles admitted to “car jumping” which was explained as going parked car to parked car to see what they could find inside and eventually both juveniles admitted involvement in stealing the stolen pickup and driving it around.

As a result, a 16-year-old juvenile was placed into custody for Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Minor in Possession of Alcohol, Criminal Mischief, and Failure to Report an Accident and a 15-year-old juvenile was placed into custody for Accessory to a Felony and Minor in Possession of Alcohol. Both Juveniles were provided court dates for the offenses and released back to their custodial guardians.

We would like to remind our community members of some things everyone can do to assist in deterrence of vehicle break-ins and vehicle thefts. Lock all doors to your vehicle; never leave the keys to the vehicle in the vehicle when unattended; do not leave valuables in your vehicle, especially in plain sight; try to park in well-lit areas and if you have a car alarm, make sure it is activated. If you see someone acting suspicious and looking into vehicles or around them, call law enforcement to come check it out.

Report of an Accident Leads to Recovery of Stolen Vehicle in Chadron

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.&nbsp;ー&nbsp;Meridian students are starting the school year with a brand-new playground designed to be safer, more inclusive and full of opportunities for fun. Completed over the summer, the playground renovation was made possible through the hard work of Educational Service Unit 13’s (ESU 13) facilities and maintenance crew, the support of community partners and the dedication of employees.

“Meridian is a Level Three program, which means we serve students with significant and complex support needs,” said Jessica Broderick, Director of Special Education. “This playground was designed to give every student—regardless of mobility or sensory needs—a safe, accessible place to play, learn and grow. We know that play is learning, and this project ensures those opportunities are available to all of our students.”

The project included the installation of new equipment, safety-focused features and turf inlays with interactive designs that encourage movement and play. Specialized structures also provide opportunities for students of all abilities to enjoy the space together.

“This was truly a team effort,” Jessica added. “From the planning to the installation, so many people played a part in making this playground a reality.”

A special thanks goes to ESU 13’s Facilities &amp; Maintenance Crew, whose dedication and behind-the-scenes work ensured the project was completed on time and ready for students’ return. ESU 13 also thanks its Board of Education for their unwavering support, Administrator Dr. Laura Barrett for her leadership (and even a little hands-on installation help), and the many ESU 13 staff and volunteers who pitched in with demolition, assembly, and support throughout the summer.

In addition, ESU 13 extends its gratitude to Bluffs Tree Service and 5 S Lawn Care for their in-kind donations of equipment use, which were critical in bringing the project to completion.

Meridian Students Celebrate New Playground Designed for Safety, Accessibility and Fun

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;- With the harvest season soon to get underway, the Nebraska Public Service Commission (PSC) encourages producers/sellers to familiarize themselves with Nebraska Grain laws.

“Part of a successful harvest for producers/sellers is making sure their assets are protected. Understanding the law and how it affects them plays a key role in that process.” said Terri Fritz, PSC Grain Department Director.

Under the Grain Dealer Act, if producers/sellers want to ensure their transactions with a licensed grain dealer are covered by the grain dealer’s security posted with the PSC, they must demand payment within 15 days of completion of their contract with the dealer. Producers/sellers who choose not to demand payment within 15 days after completion of their contract will be unsecured creditors of that dealer and forfeit any protection from the grain dealer’s security.

Director Fritz said, “It’s important for the producer/seller to understand that it is the irresponsibility to demand payment within a set timeframe to ensure they are covered.”

Grain Warehouse operators are also reminded by the PSC of the Emergency Storage Policy. In order to store grain on the ground, an Emergency Storage application form must be filed with, and approved by, the Commission.

Public Service Commission Issues Harvest Reminders

CHADRON, Neb. – New faculty members have joined Chadron State College this fall. Individuals in the School of Business, Mathematics and Science are Dr. Karla Abshire, John Atsu-Swanzy, Dr. M'bark Baddouh, Ruizhu “Rachel” Dai, Dr. Stephen Forsha, Dr. Diya Ganguly, Dr. Amir Manzoor and Dr. William Soto. New faculty in the School of Liberal Arts are Brian Grob, Rachel McKinley and Dr. Jessica Meyers. New faculty in the School of Professional and Applied are Brett Greenwald and Jazlyn Reitz.

New faculty in the School of Business, Mathematics and Science include the following.

Abshire earned a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Creighton University. She said she is looking forward to a busy and exciting year. Her areas of specialty include geriatric physical therapy and modified exercise routines for people with disabilities.

She will teach Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Human Anatomy, Human Physiology and Advanced Human Anatomy.

Baddouh earned a doctorate and a master’s from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a bachelor’s degree from Ibn Zohr University in Agadir, Morocco. He conducted his doctoral research in Wyoming and has taught a geology field camp in the Black Hills since 2017.

Baddouh, who helped lead a Natural History Hike in Chadron State Park during move-in week, said he finds the geology of the region amazing. His areas of specialty include geology and geochemistry of ancient lakes.

Courses he will teach include Physical Geology, Environmental Geology, Earth Science and College Chemistry.

Atsu-Swanzy, who has an All But Dissertation (ABD) status in a doctoral degree in Education Studies from National University, will teach Mathematics for Teachers. He earned a Master of Philosophy in Education Studies in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge in England, a master’s in mathematics and a master’s in math education from Rowan University in New Jersey and a bachelor’s in mathematics from Thomas Edison State University. He has a New Jersey Teacher of Mathematics K-12 Certification.

His areas of interest include Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics and learning and academic achievement in the context of stress and academic burnout.

Atsu-Swanzy said he is interested in study abroad programs, and eager to serve and engage with students and partner with regional K-12 teachers.

He earned a master’s and doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a bachelor’s from Ibn Zohr University in Agadir, Morocco. He looks forward to living close to where he conducted his doctoral research in Wyoming and the Black Hills where he has been teaching geology field camp since 2017. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Courses he will teach include Physical Geology, Environmental Geology, Earth Science, and College Chemistry.

Dai earned an MBA with an accounting concentration from Texas A&amp;M in Corpus Christi. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

She said she joined CSC because she would be able to teach while continuing her doctoral studies.

“The college and Business Academy demonstrated impressive growth potential. The environment is supportive and relaxed, with nice, caring, and friendly supervisors and colleagues. I’m excited to be part of its continued progress,” she said.

She will teach Business Ethics, Leadership, Organizational Behavior, Corporate Social Responsibility, Accounting I and II, and Business/Economic Statistics.

Forsha earned a doctorate in Management from Webster University, an MBA from William Woods University, a post-graduate degree in Gaelic Literature from the University College Cork, and a bachelor’s from Northern Michigan University.

He is looking forward to teaching at a rural college with profession-focused business programs that value interdisciplinary collaboration. His areas of specialty include moral decision making, leadership, and Gaelic literature.

He will teach Management, Leadership, and Introduction to Business.

Ganguly earned a doctorate in Agricultural Economics from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, and a master’s and a bachelor’s in economics from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India.

She said joining the CSC faculty allows her to expand her teaching portfolio and have a meaningful voice in program and curriculum development.

She said her research is at the intersection of behavioral economics, environmental policy, and climate change. Her work explores how people make conservation decisions, respond to environmental risks like PFAS contamination, and trade off individual and group welfare in resource allocation.

She will teach Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Agricultural Policy, and Managerial Economics.

Manzoor earned four degrees in Pakistan: a doctorate in Management Sciences from Bahria University, an MBA from Lahore University of Management Sciences, a master’s in information technology from Preston Institute of Management Sciences and Technology, and a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from NED University of Engineering and Technology.

He said he was drawn to CSC’s commitment to developing knowledgeable and engaged leaders.

“[CSC’s] focus on excellence in teaching, applied scholarship, and service aligns perfectly with my passion for blending industry experience with academic teaching to prepare students for real-world success,” he said. “I look forward to collaborating with colleagues, mentoring students, and creating impactful learning experiences that connect academic theory with real-world application, particularly in the rapidly evolving fields of AI, data science, and business analytics.”

His areas of specialty and research include artificial intelligence, data science, business analytics, project management, cybersecurity, information systems, and technology adoption. He has published books, journal articles, and case studies on these topics, with a focus on integrating emerging technologies into business strategy and education.

The courses he will teach include Web Page Development, Principles of Information Systems, and Business Programming.

Soto earned a doctorate in biology from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces and a bachelor’s in biology from California State University, Fresno.

Soto, who said he loves the Pine Ridge area, has training in host-microbe interactions, microbiology, immunology, epidemiology, invertebrate biology, evolutionary ecology, evolutionary biology, cell biology, molecular biology, and human physiology.

He will teach Host-microbe Interactions, Human Diseases, Immunology, and Microbiology.

Alongside the additions in Business, Mathematics, and Science, the college also welcomes several new faculty members in the School of Liberal Arts.

Grob earned a Master of Fine Arts in Acting Pedagogy from the University of Idaho and a bachelor’s in Theatre Performance from Utah Valley University. He said CSC feels like a perfect fit.

“It's not often that I feel as in sync with an institution as I do with Chadron State College. I'm excited for the opportunity to help build and expand the Theatre program,” he said.

He will teach Performance, Acting Pedagogy, Acting for Film, Scriptwriting and Screenwriting, Principles of Acting, First Year Experience, and Theatre Practicum.

McKinley earned a bachelor’s in English Language and Literature from Spring Arbor University and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.

She said she was looking for an open-enrollment institution that cares about students, and a team of faculty members invested in teaching and collaboration.

“As soon as I set foot on the CSC campus, I was hooked,” she said. “From the faculty members, to Dean Margetts, to the inquisitive students, everyone I met was genuinely curious and caring in a way I haven't seen for a long time in education. I knew right away that I wanted to be a part of the CSC community.”

Her specialties are English education and creative nonfiction, and she is particularly interested in writing about family and confessional writing.

Courses she will teach include Technical Writing, Creative Writing, Advanced Poetics, Digital Composition, and Teaching Methods for English Education.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Meyers joined the CSC faculty in January 2025. She earned a Juris Doctorate from University of Nebraska, and a bachelor’s in history from Colorado State University.

After working in the criminal justice system for eight years, she wanted to pivot to educating and inspiring the next actors in the system. Her areas of specialty include criminal and indigent defense and trial advocacy.

She will teach Criminal Law, Introduction to Law, First Year Inquiry, Victimology, Criminal Procedures, Introduction to Criminal Justice, and Senior Seminar.

In addition to the Liberal Arts, the School of Professional and Applied Studies has welcomed new faculty who bring expertise in education and community engagement.

Greenwald earned a Master of Education from the University of Nevada in Las Vegas and a bachelor’s from the University of California in Berkeley.

Greenwald said he joined CSC because he loved the campus, the faculty, and small-town atmosphere.

He specializes in behavior management and functional skills with research experience in racial proportionality in early childhood Special Education.

Greenwald will teach Literature and Language Arts Programs in Early Childhood, Adolescent Development, Guidance Techniques in Human Relations, and Program Development and Management.

Chadron native Reitz completed both of her degrees at CSC, a bachelor's in elementary education with a concentration in early childhood, and a master's in education administration.

“Joining the faculty allows me to give back to my alma mater and my community by helping to instruct, support, and shape the next generation of teachers. I enjoy working with students of all ages, supporting teachers, and understanding the ways in which administration contributes to a school’s success,” she said. “I am eager to help students discover their passion and love for teaching. My goal is to provide them with a strong foundation to become positive, influential educators, while continuing to grow and learn as an educator myself.”

She is enrolled in a doctoral program in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Elementary Education.

Reitz will teach Introduction to Teaching, Language, Culture, and Literacy, and Intermediate Reading/Writing.

Among the recipients are Habitat for Humanity groups in western Nebraska. North Platte Habitat for Humanity received $15,000 to support its annual home-building initiative, which provides pathways to homeownership for individuals and families. Scottsbluff/Gering Habitat for Humanity, which also serves Alliance and Chadron, was awarded $30,000 for its home-building efforts.

SIDNEY, Neb. (Aug. 25, 2025) — A Sidney man was taken into custody Monday afternoon after law enforcement responded to reports of shots fired at a home near 12th and Maple Street, according to the Sidney Police Department.

Police said officers were dispatched around 3:45 p.m. after a man reportedly fired three shots inside a residence and claimed another armed individual was inside. The suspect was found outside the home and detained.

Because of the report of a second gunman, officers from the Sidney Police Department and Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office established a perimeter and treated the incident as a high-risk situation. After repeated attempts to make contact, officers entered the residence and determined no one else was inside.

Investigators obtained a search warrant and seized firearms, ammunition, drugs and drug paraphernalia from the home. The suspect was taken for a medical evaluation before being booked into jail.

Charges include felony possession of a controlled substance, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police thanked the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office, Sidney Regional Medical Center Ambulance and Sidney Fire Department for their assistance.

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol reminds motorists to finish the summer driving season in a safe manner. The&nbsp;Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over&nbsp;campaign focuses on impaired driving through Labor Day, September 1.

“Our troopers have been working hard throughout the state to maintain safe roadways all summer long,” said Colonel Bryan Waugh, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “As we close the summer travel season, there are still several high-traffic events going on.”

In the first ten days of the&nbsp;Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over&nbsp;campaign, troopers have arrested 38 people for driving under the influence. Troopers have also stopped 55 drivers for speeding at over 100 miles per hour.

Troopers will continue working overtime throughout the campaign, thanks in part to grant funding from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office.

GERING, Neb.&nbsp;– Road construction to repair damaged sections of Old Oregon Trail Road&nbsp;east of Scotts Bluff National Monument will necessitate the use of a detour to access Scotts Bluff National Monument, including the Summit Road and Visitor Center. Starting at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 26th, Old Oregon Trail will be closed from West Lawn Cemetery to the monument entrance. This closure is expected to be in place through Friday, Aug. 29th.

Visitors will still be able to access the monument from the west. From the intersection of Five Rocks Road and Old Oregon Trail, visitors should travel north on Five Rocks Road for 2.4 miles to Beltline Highway. Make a left onto Beltline Highway. Follow Beltline Highway for 1.6 miles to Nebraska Highway 92. At NE 92 turn left. Follow NE 92 west for 2.1 miles to Old Oregon Trail. The Nebraska chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers presented its inaugural Public Lands Hero Award to Adam Kester, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission access program manager, Aug. 13 in North Platte.

The Hero Award, which will be presented annually after this year, recognizes those who make outstanding efforts to improve public access for hunters and anglers in Nebraska. Kester has been with Game and Parks since 2011 and served many roles in its Wildlife Division.

Loren Smith of North Platte, Backcountry Hunters and Anglers board member, had high praise for Kester.

“There is no one more deserving of the Nebraska BHA chapter's Public Lands Hero Award than Adam Kester,” he said. “His dogged determination to improve hunting and fishing access to folks in a state with 97 percent private land is&nbsp;simply outstanding.&nbsp;We are all fortunate in Nebraska to have Kester working tirelessly for the outdoor recreation public."&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

“It’s all due to the team we have and the generous Nebraska landowners that participate,” he said. “We like to be innovative and develop options that benefit both the landowner and hunters.” &nbsp;

Game and Parks offers a variety of voluntary access programs that offer landowners financial incentives and provide public opportunities for hunting, fishing and trapping. &nbsp;

While Kester was a private lands biologist with Game and Parks, he promoted the Open Fields and Waters Program and administered more than 100 agreements with landowners that included nearly 70,000 acres of access opportunities for hunters.

Kester also created the Canyons Access Initiative that grew from about 400 acres to nearly 25,000 acres of walk-in hunting opportunities across the grasslands and woodlands of the Loess Canyons. He pursued funds through the National Wild Turkey Federation to increase payment rates for landowners to open access in prime habitat for deer, turkey, elk and other game species.&nbsp;

As a district manager for the partners section, Kester found creative ways to tie habitat management and access incentives with Game and Parks’ Berggren Plan for Pheasants. The approach increased Open Fields and Waters enrollments in the plan’s southwest and south-central focus areas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In his current role, Kester oversees statewide efforts and has developed the Elk Hunter Access Program, which includes nearly 50,000 acres in four elk units. He partnered with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation to increase funding and start the program in 2024.

He was involved with the development and implementation of the Nebraska Community Access Partnership with Pheasants Forever that has added over 31,000 acres of Open Fields and Waters enrollments in the Ogallala area.

Kester also is working to add a Managed Access Program, which will be a reservation-based access program providing custom options for landowners and more hunting opportunities across the state.

Kester commended his coworkers and landowners for growing Open Fields and Waters, which has more than 435,000 acres across Nebraska.

“Our team works with over 900 landowners and the OFW program grows every year,” Kester said. “All the programs are voluntary, and we have a 97 percent retention rate with landowners. They (landowners) return to the program because of the relationships with our staff and the compensation NGPC provides.”&nbsp;

Kester Receives Public Lands Hero Award

The Nebraska State Fair kicked off its 2025 run with strong attendance and enthusiastic crowds, welcoming families from across Nebraska and beyond during its opening weekend, August 22–24.

Cool temperatures and mostly clear skies created the perfect backdrop for fairgoers, who streamed through the gates steadily from early morning until late evening. Fair staff reports that both Friday’s opening day and Saturday attendance surpassed last year’s respective numbers, with Sunday’s final totals expected to remain strong.

“Our opening weekend is off to an incredible start,” said Jaime Parr, Nebraska State Fair Executive Director. “The energy on the grounds has been outstanding, and we are thrilled to see so many families coming out to make memories with us at the Fair.”

Guests enjoyed a wide variety of attractions, from the popular llama, alpaca and Texas Longhorn shows to the thousands of colorful ribbons on display in the 4-H and FFA building, recognizing the hard work of youth exhibitors statewide. The weekend concluded with the 4-H Final Drive in the Five Points Bank Arena on Sunday afternoon, a highlight of 4-H Weekend.

The first half of the Fair’s highly anticipated drone and fireworks show lit up the skies over Grand Island this weekend, with one show performed and another set for next weekend, Friday through Sunday.

With rides, games, live entertainment, livestock shows and special attractions, the Nebraska State Fair continues to offer something for everyone. Organizers invite guests to join in the fun as the Fair continues through September 1.

“We are just getting started,” said Parr. “We have another week ahead of us and the weather is looking incredible, our team is feeling good and we are ready to welcome more Nebraskans to the grounds.”

Open Class livestock shows will move through the barns during the week before FFA makes their appearance next weekend.

Monday, August 25, is Older Nebraskans Day.

Tuesday, August 26, is $3 admission all day long.

Nebraska State Fair Draws Large Crowds Opening Weekend

LEXINGTON, Neb.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a Tennessee woman after a brief pursuit in Dawson County.

At approximately 1:10 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24, NSP received a report of a Ford Edge speeding and passing other vehicles on the shoulder of Interstate 80. The vehicle was reportedly traveling eastbound near mile marker 215, near Gothenburg.

A trooper located the vehicle and clocked in traveling at over 100 miles per hour on I-80 near mile marker 221. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the driver continued eastbound, reaching over 120 miles per hour. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

Near mile marker 234, the driver of the Edge pulled over. The trooper performed a felony traffic stop. The driver exited the vehicle and began approaching the trooper and yelling. The driver refused to follow the trooper’s commands. The trooper then deployed a taser and was able to take the driver into custody.

The suspect, Jessica Summers, 38, of Jonesborough, Tennessee, was medically cleared at the Lexington hospital and has been lodged in Dawson County Jail for willful reckless driving, obstructing a peace officer and failure to obey a lawful order. The Dawson County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the arrest.

Nebraska State Patrol Makes Arrest After Pursuit in Dawson County

At approximately 11:45 p.m. Thursday, a trooper saw a motorcycle speeding, with no license plates, on eastbound I-80 near the 56th&nbsp;Street interchange in Lincoln. The trooper attempted a traffic stop. The rider initially slowed down to approximately 75 miles per hour but refused to pull over. After a few minutes, the motorcycle accelerated and fled at a high rate of speed. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The motorcycle reached speeds above 150 miles per hour and passed multiple vehicles on the shoulder as it continued fleeing eastbound on I-80. The NSP AirWing was activated and flew to the area east of Lincoln. The motorcycle exited I-80 and continued fleeing on northbound Highway 66. The NSP helicopter took over the pursuit from the air and the trooper on the ground discontinued the pursuit.

Pilots continued to track the motorcycle from the air as it continued fleeing. The rider traveled on various roads in Saunders County, then began traveling back toward Lincoln. After approximately 30 minutes, the motorcycle rider ran out of gas and came to a stop. The NSP helicopter directed troopers on the ground to the location on Highway 77 between Wahoo and Ceresco. The rider was taken into custody without further incident.

The rider, Travis Knipp, 29, of Omaha, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving and numerous traffic violations. He was lodged in Lancaster County Jail. The Saunders County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in this pursuit.

The office, located at 3529 S Locust Street, opened earlier this week and is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Governor Pillen highlighted how the new facility supports his administration’s goal of running government like a business by making services more efficient and customer-focused.

“This new service center in Grand Island is another step forward in making state government work better for the people of Nebraska,” said Governor Pillen. “By improving capacity, reducing wait times and adopting business-minded efficiencies, we’re giving Nebraskans their time back and delivering the kind of service they deserve.”

The Grand Island Service Center is a full-service location offering all driver licensing services, including motorcycle and commercial vehicle testing. The office also incorporates queuing and appointment system innovations proven in Omaha and Lincoln, which expanded capacity and significantly reduced wait times.

The service center model was first launched in the Omaha metro area in 2018, with subsequent openings in north Omaha, west Omaha and Lincoln. Each center has demonstrated how separating driver licensing services into specialized offices creates greater flexibility, improves customer experience and enhances efficiency.

“We are excited to bring this transformation of driver licensing services to Grand Island,” said Rhonda Lahm, Director of the Nebraska DMV. “This facility represents our commitment to providing Nebraskans with more accessible, efficient service options.
