Joyce Ellen McGinley passed away on December 19, 2020 in Billings. She was 87 years old. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Dan “Pappy” McGinley (2010), and her eldest daughter Sally McGinley-Miles (Mike) of Tucson, Arizona (2017). She was the youngest and last surviving child of Elliot and Eva Minnick. Her brothers Jack, Ken, Bob, and her sister Marty all preceded her in death. She is survived by 11 children: Case (Gail) of San Antonio, TX; Ed of Ft. Worth, TX; Mike (Colette) of Dillon, MT; Ron of Gillette, WY; Colleen of Dillon; John (Rhonda) of Dillon; Kate McGinley-West (Rand) of Cortez, CO; Mark (Elizabeth) of Helena, MT; Jess (Wyndy) of Williston, ND; Shawn (Kami) of Belgrade, MT; and Margie McGinley-Larson (Jim) of Billings, MT. Gramma Joyce leaves behind an amazing and life-giving legacy of (35) grandchildren and (30) great grandchildren. Joyce was born at home in Alliance, NE on February 26, 1933. She married the love-of-her-life, Dan McGinley on December 29, 1951. They lived on the Nebraska ranch until 1958, at which time they moved their young family to Pierre, SD. In 1965, they left South Dakota and moved to Wise River, MT. In 1969, Dan and Joyce moved to Dillon, MT where they would spend the remainder of their lives. In Dillon, Joyce raised her 12 children, all of whom graduated from Beaverhead County High School, and later enjoyed the many blessings of grand and great grandchildren who filled her life completely. Her life is accurately described by the words of the 23rd Psalm: “My cup runneth over.” After her kids had grown, Joyce returned to school and received her Nursing degree. She worked for many years at Parkview Acres Nursing Home in Dillon. Nursing is what she had aspired to upon her own graduation, as the valedictorian at Alliance High School 36 years earlier. She was very proud of this accomplishment, as were her children and husband. Joyce was a woman of great faith and an active member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. She attended Mass regularly and enjoyed working at the Bargain Basement until time itself would limit her mobility and her strength. She continued to live on her own, and in her own home, until age 85. Joyce gave her life completely, to her husband and to her children, in a manner that is best described as “Agape” or sacrificial love. She held nothing back. She lived out the Gospel message: “there is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for a friend.” Her life was amazing, inspiring, and wonderful. Go rest high on that mountain, Mom, and sleep in the arms of the Angels. The family is planning a Mass and subsequent interment for spring/summer 2021. Juanity A. Aguallo (19454 - 2020)

Carol Ann (Farr) (Rusk) Scott, 75, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 13, 2020 with her son Brad Rusk by her side.&nbsp; She was in a care center for dementia, contracted and survived COVID-19, but then succumbed to complications from the virus.

She was born in Vincennes, IN on March 12, 1945 to Edgar S. Farr and Betty E. (Bradley) Farr and was raised there as well as a few other U.S. locations including Washington, DC, Lubbock, TX, Syracuse, NY, and Alliance, NE because of her father’s military career with the Air Force.

In 1963, she graduated from high school in Syracuse, NY just before the family returned to Alliance.&nbsp; Her and a classmate’s college entrance exam scores were the highest scored that year for incoming freshmen of Chadron State Teacher’s College, as it was then called.&nbsp; She attended college for 2 semesters before pursuing training and work as a dental hygienist subsequently leaving the dentistry career to start and raise a family.

She became an accomplished spinner and weaver and taught both crafts as a volunteer for various weaving guilds and clubs, plus professionally.&nbsp; In the past, she sold her woven goods and services through a boutique business she co-owned with then husband Charles Rusk, and her mother Betty Farr.

She enjoyed being outdoors, gardening and gathering wild fruits and berries for jams and jellies, and collecting rocks, minerals, shells, bones, artifacts to use in her art and crafts or simply admire. She loved most animals both wild and domestic, especially her house cats and all the neighborhood strays, too.

In better days, Carol was whip-smart and had an offbeat sense of humor.&nbsp; She was clever and creative, and most of all a truly kind and loving person.

Carol is survived by her son Brad Rusk, his wife Kecla, and their children Keverett, Kileya, and Brayeshla of Sidney, NE, Brad’s father Charles Rusk of Lincoln, NE, her brother George Farr of Maplewood, MN, her best friend Dean Myers of Hay Springs, NE, and extended family members plus many close friends she regarded as family.&nbsp; Carol was predeceased by her parents, her husband Micheal P. Scott, her uncle Jim Bradley, and infant brother James Farr.

A private memorial service will be held in lieu of any group service to keep friends and family safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. The family urges everyone to wear a mask in public spaces, wash hands often, and follow social distancing rules as a matter of civic responsibility to keep you, and those around you healthy.

Twyla Mae Delila (Marsh) Thurston, 81, passed away on Sunday, December 13, 2020 at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance.

She was born April 12, 1939. Twyla was the second eldest of five siblings born to Jacob and Pearl (Morrison) Marsh of Mullen, Nebraska. Growing up on the ranch there was no shortage of work to do or fun to be had with her brothers and sisters. Twyla was known to be a capable soft ball pitcher even striking out her husband Bill on one notable occasion. Twyla attended secretarial school in Omaha, NE before marrying Bill on June 29, 1958. Twyla and Bill began working and ranching in Grant County Nebraska raising their three children Kathy, Skeeter and John in the close knit communities of Ashby and Hyannis.

Twyla worked hard to help Bill with his haying contracts and made more hay crew lunches then you can

count. She took care of many young men and women during the busy summers. Twyla volunteered as a

4-H leader and never missed a volleyball game or a wrestling match. She often drove many of the local

Of course rodeo became a big part of her life. Twyla traveled far and wide to watch Skeeter, John and all the grand kids. Even as her health was failing she somehow made a way to show up and cheer them on.

cards or a rodeo broadcast on TV brought plenty of enjoyment to her life. One of her favorite things to do was take a trip with her siblings to gamble and just spend time together or attend a family event.

Nieces, nephews and cousins all held a special place in Twyla's heart. Her grandchildren and their accomplishments were her pride and joy along with her children.

Twyla leaves behind her husband of 62 years, Bill Thurston, daughter Kathy (Dan) Conner, their children Josh, Alisha, and Kaci, her son Skeeter (Lynda) their children Wyatt, Zeke (Jayne) and daughter Lucy, Sam

and Tess, her son John (Tiffany) and children Jordan (Chancy), Ace (Danielle) Colby and Brady. Twyla also leaves to mourn her beloved siblings Mardell (Terry) Huddle, Butch (Donna) Marsh, Phyllis Eberl (Ben)

and Bob (Peg) Marsh, sisters in law Joy Boyer, Marilyn (Warren) Herman and Wynona Bolton along with many treasured nieces, nephews, cousins and Sandhill friends. Twyla was preceded in death by

She was born March 7, 1956 in Alliance, Nebraska to Isaac J. and Christine (Black Bear) White Crane.

In past years, Wilma worked at the Woolrich Factory in Alliance and worked for over ten years at Marian Residence as a nursing assistant.&nbsp; Wilma was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.&nbsp; Her home was always open to everyone.

Wilma J. Red Nest (1956 - 2020)

Robert G. “Bobby” Lehl, Jr., 68, died Friday, December 11, 2020 at his home.

He was born February 3, 1952 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Robert G. and Alvina M. (Bauer) Lehl.

While in high school, Bobby participated in 4-H, FFA, football, baseball and other activities. He graduated from Alliance High School in 1970.&nbsp; Following graduation, he began his career in farming which he enjoyed throughout his life.&nbsp; He enjoyed playing slow pitch softball as well as bowling and many other hobbies.

He is survived by his sons, Scott Lehl and Steve (Kris) Lehl; 3 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild; his mother, Alvina Lehl; his life partner, Melodie “Mel” Reeve; and his sister and brother-in-law, Judy (Evert) Smith, all of Alliance.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his father, his brothers, Roger, Chuck and Jimmy Lehl, and his nephew, Roger Lehl, Jr.

Memorial services and inurnment in the Alliance Cemetery will be held at a later date.

Robert G. “Bobby” Lehl, Jr. (1952 - 2020)

Troy Dale Jay Serbousek was born on Nov 5 1968 at Pine Ridge SD.&nbsp; He passed away Dec 10 2020 at Chadron Community Hospital.&nbsp; Troy grew up in NW Nebraska and always considered the area home.&nbsp; He later spent his teenage and later years in Stuart NE after attending high school there and working various jobs including security and ranch work.&nbsp; One of his favorite memories though was traveling across Nebraska and South Dakota with his step brother Stan Fernau working as his one and only roadie, helping set up and take down Stan’s karaoke equipment wherever Stan played.&nbsp; After Stan’s death in 2004, Troy returned to the Chadron area where he lived until the time of his death.&nbsp; Troy never knew a stranger and he had a great memory remembering people he met years ago.&nbsp; He made many friends while in Chadron.&nbsp; He would hang out in the local taverns almost every evening in downtown Chadron, but never drank a drop of alcohol.&nbsp; Instead you would find him drinking a Pepsi talking to anyone that wanted to visit.&nbsp; Sometimes he’d challenge others to a game of pool and would even let them win sometimes.&nbsp; And at bar close, Troy would be a dependent sober driver willing to give about any college student, rancher/farmer or other local a ride home that needed one, never charging a cent but always willing to accept a late night hamburger from McDonald’s as payment. &nbsp; Troy loved to travel and enjoyed going on the occasional trip.&nbsp; He owned several vehicles over his life and whenever he had a pick up truck, he was always willing to lend a hand to anyone that needed help moving.&nbsp; He loved to stay up on the local news always stopping by the local convenience stores after bar close visiting with the clerks and picking up the most recent newspapers to read later at home.&nbsp; Troy’s kindness and friendship will be missed by so many.&nbsp;

Due to Covid restrictions and to help prevent further infections, there will be no funeral service at this time.&nbsp; A memorial service celebrating Troy’s life will be held later next year.&nbsp; Memorials made be made either directly to the family in lieu of burial costs or to the Shop With A Cop program at the Chadron Police Department or any charity of the donor’s choice.&nbsp; Troy had a long time relationship with Chadron PD, serving as an Explorer when he was younger and friendships with many officers both past and present, often doing ride-alongs, or just stopping by and visiting especially since his brother was the one time 911 dispatch supervisor.&nbsp;

Troy Dale Jay Serbousek (1968 - 2020)

James V Cain Jr. died December 8, 2020, of Covid-19 related illness at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, NE, at the age of 95. For the past 15 months, he had been living at the Western Nebraska Veteran’s Home.

Jim was born on a farm near Republican City, NE, to James V. and Margaret (Keenan) Cain. In 1943, he graduated mid-year from Wilber, NE High School and entered the U.S. Navy. He was in the V12 Program and the Navy’s College Training Program. During WWII, he served 2½ years on the destroyer, U.S.S. Nields.

After returning from the war in 1948, he married Dorothy Kovar at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Lincoln, NE. To this union, 5 sons were born.

Jim worked for the U.S. Soil Conservation Service in both Lincoln and Scottsbluff. The family moved to Scottsbluff in 1962. He retired from the Soil Conservation Service in 1980. Jim then worked part-time for Wells Engineering for the next 10 years.

He and Dorothy were members of the St. Agnes Parish for 58 years. Jim is survived by his wife, Dorothy; 4 sons, Michael (Leslie) of Ft. Laramie, WY, Stephen (Julie) of Grand Island, NE, James (Karen) of Lenexa, KS, and Mark (Kelly) of Santa Fe, NM; 9 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and one sister. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son (John), 2 brothers, and 4 sisters.

Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be scheduled for a later date.

Donald Dean Root, 87, died unexpectedly December 8 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 15 beginning at 1:00 at Bridgman Funeral Home 2104 Broadway, Scottsbluff, NE. Visitation will be 5:00 to 8:00 Monday, December 14 at Bridgman Funeral Home. A reception following the service will be at Zion Evangelical Church 3617 5th Avenue, Scottsbluff. He was born on December 17,1933 in Grand Island, Nebraska to Harold and Evelyn (Truex) Root. He attended Scottsbluff High School. He entered the Navy at age 17 where he performed underwater welding and personnel recovery. Don also earned a National Defense Service Medal and Navy Occupation Service Medal European Clasp. In 1955, Don married Adeline “Addie” Sarge in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Three children were born to this union: Donald Jr., Lori, and Lisa. He spent a number of years as a railroad engineer on the Rio Grande RR. Don and Addie later divorced. Eventually Don met and married Martha Faye Brown and was stepfather to her 2 children, Larry and Russell. Don and Faye subsequently moved to Ingleside, Texas where they opened a restaurant, Tom’s Fried Chicken. Also while in Texas, Don was a visiting pastor at a number of churches. Most recently he attended Zion Evangelical Church in Scottsbluff. Survivors include his three children and two stepchildren, Donald Dean Root Jr. of Arvada, CO; Lori Jo Root Urey of Scottsbluff, NE; Lisa Diann Root Landin of Las Vegas, NV; Larry Peterson of Ft. Collins, CO, and Russell Peterson of Ft. Collins, CO; 13 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; four sisters, Barbara Root Reynolds of Seward, NE; Bonnie Root Dobberstine of Ft. Collins, CO; Helen Root Herhahn of Lakewood, CO, and Donna Root Herron of Mountain Home, ID. He was proceeded in death by his beloved wife, Faye, and his younger brother, Harold “Ike” Root.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Jarod Patrick Johnston passed unexpectedly from this earth on Friday, December 11,&nbsp;2020 in Cheyenne, WY, from complications from a heart attack.&nbsp; His family was with him in spirit due to COVID restrictions.

Jarod was born April 4, 1977 in Alliance to Terry and Connie (Rusk) Johnston.&nbsp; He grew up on a ranch North of Antioch, attending school there through 8th grade.&nbsp; He then attended Alliance High School, graduating with the class of 1995.&nbsp; He participated in FFA, and wrestling and fostered many lifelong friendships at AHS.&nbsp; The majority of his high school time he could be found with his love, Melanie.&nbsp; Jacob was born in 1995, bringing this couple to three.&nbsp; In 1997 Jarod and Melanie Parascand were married.&nbsp; Morgan completed their family in 1998.

In 2005 he began his career at BNSF as a conductor.&nbsp; In August of 2006 he became an engineer.

He enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, target shooting and hunting.&nbsp; He loved to tinker on everything from his lawn equipment to his buildings.&nbsp; He was diligent in researching every project before he started.&nbsp; That knowledge helped him with remodeling projects in their first and second homes, did auto body&nbsp; and general vehicle repair.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He took so much pride in his family, home and property.

He is survived by wife, Melanie, son Jacob, daughter Morgan, and his four legged companions Layla and Stella, parents Terry and Connie, brothers Brian (Trish), Kevin (Bridget) Mother-in-law Donna Parascand, Brother-in-laws Mike (Kenley), Mitch (Nikki) sister-in-law Michelle (Gianni) Barrette and numerous special nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Jarod was preceded in death by grandparents, brother-in-laws and father-in-law.

Memorials may be sent to Jane’s Closet or the Highland Park Memory Support Unit.

Jarod Patrick Johnston (1977 - 2020)

Fran...Fynn...Finny.....Fanncie....Mom....Grandma.... was born November 19th, 1949 at Bridgeport, Ne. to Albon Baker "Jack" Hall and Mildred Maria(Gorman) Hall. 

It has been an interesting life for Francis. Her family lived on the north west edge of the Hall Cattle and Land Co. Which in it's hayday incorporated 50,000 plus contiguous acres. 

Originally started by her great grand father Eugene Albon Hall and later ran by Albon Baker "AB" Hall Sr. and then by her Uncle Donald Baker Hall and her father Albon Baker "Jack" Hall Jr. She grew up on the "farm", so called as it set on the edge of the sandhills and the farm ground to the north. She grew up loving horses and animals. Participating in many gymkana and fair shows . At one time holding a state record for pole bending at Aksarban. 

She attended school at the Letan country school of which she had numerous stories of the strict teachers that shaped her formative years. As all good things must come to an end she continued her education at Alliance High graduating with the now famous Class of 1968. After graduating AHS and spending a summer working various jobs and contributing to her parents grey hair and ulcers she moved on to higher education in Rapid City, studying in the new and exciting computer programing field. While she was at Rapid City, studying hard and looking for direction in her life.... a young rapscallion that she had known most of her young life, was returning from active duty in the U.S. Army. 

As in a romance novel....this was the beginning. Raymond "Gene" Shaw and Francis Marie were married June 14, 1969 and life was good, mostly. To this union was born three sons, Clinton Gene 1973, Robert Gene 1975, and Albon Gene 1981. After spending numerous years moving around the panhandle of Nebraska putting up with her mate's desire to find the perfect job........ the boys started school and things settled down and they settled in Lakeside, Ne. in a blizzard in 1978. Before that they must have lived on 4 or 5 ranches after leaving Hall Cattle in 1974. 

Through the years Francis worked at many different jobs, including, Taco John's, Woolrich Manufacturing, Electric Hose, selling insurance, running her own candy store, book keeper, selling diet powder, ranch cook, hay hand, possibly something I have forgotten, and most importantly ....loving mother and wife. 

Francis's first cancer diagnosis and surgery was in 1990, she was cancer free for nearly eight years before the return of the cancer and her next surgery. since then it has been a pretty regular event every year to year and a half. Not too long after the first surgery she found her true calling and returned to school to become a nurse. After graduating with honors from WNCC School of Nursing she began working at Box Butte General in Alliance. While at BBGH she was in on the beginning of the Kidney dialysis Unit and obtained her Certification and RN status. After working at BBGH for over ten years she came home one day and informed her life mate that she was going to begin working as a traveling nurse.

 After giving her mate a book called "Who Moved My Cheese" and assuring him that she was not insane. She began a much loved and interesting career as a traveler. Over the next 8 years or so she lived and worked from California to West Virginia, from Larado, Texas to Loveland, Co and Memphis. Always returning to Lakeside to heal from surgeries and rest between jobs. In 2009 the traveling jobs dried up somewhat because of the economy and her mate was trying to heal from a heart condition and not doing a very good job of it. Francis came home on a cold winter day and said....."Want to move to Las Vegas?" she had found a job there and was tired of being cold. Again she had to produce the book "Who Moved My Cheese" and told her mate to read it again. 

April 1st, 2010 they loaded her car and his car and moved to the Las Vegas Valley. She worked in the Dialysis field and Home Health Care field, enjoying taking care of and improving the quality of life of many people in the 8 years living there. Febuary of 2018 she finally had to retire, after the many cancer surgeries and treatments over the years, she was trying to care for patients that were in better shape than her. She was walking with a walker or cane to the door and then leaving it outside while tending to the client. She finally retired as Director Of Nurses for Bright Star of Henderson and tried to accept that someone should take care of her. 

They moved back to Alliance in November of 2018 and have enjoyed being home again. Francis received excellent care from the medical community here in Alliance and enjoyed renewing old friendships and being close to family. 

Francis is survived by her life mate of 51 years Gene; her sisters Robyn Hall Mundt of Crawford, NE and Lynn Sanchez of Tyler, TX; Brother Daniel Albon Hall of Palmer, AK; Brothers-in-Law David Shaw of Alliance, NE and Carl Shaw Sr. of Bridgeport, NE; and Sister-in-Law Ellarae Watson of Grandby, CO.  </figure>Fran...Fynn...Finny.....Fanncie....Mom....Grandma.... was born November 19th, 1949 at Bridgeport, Ne. to Albon Baker "Jack" Hall and Mildred Maria(Gorman) Hall. It has been an interesting life for Francis. Her family lived on the north west edge of the Hall Cattle and Land Co. Which in it's hayday incorporated 50,000 plus contiguous acres. Originally started by her great grand father Eugene Albon Hall and later ran by Albon Baker "AB" Hall Sr. and then by her Uncle Donald Baker Hall and her father Albon Baker "Jack" Hall Jr. She grew up on the "farm", so called as it set on the edge of the sandhills and the farm ground to the north. She grew up loving horses and animals. Participating in many gymkana and fair shows . At one time holding a state record for pole bending at Aksarban. She attended school at the Letan country school of which she had numerous stories of the strict teachers that shaped her formative years. As all good things must come to an end she continued her education at Alliance High graduating with the now famous Class of 1968. After graduating AHS and spending a summer working various jobs and contributing to her parents grey hair and ulcers she moved on to higher education in Rapid City, studying in the new and exciting computer programing field. While she was at Rapid City, studying hard and looking for direction in her life.... a young rapscallion that she had known most of her young life, was returning from active duty in the U.S. Army. As in a romance novel....this was the beginning. Raymond "Gene" Shaw and Francis Marie were married June 14, 1969 and life was good, mostly. To this union was born three sons, Clinton Gene 1973, Robert Gene 1975, and Albon Gene 1981. After spending numerous years moving around the panhandle of Nebraska putting up with her mate's desire to find the perfect job........ the boys started school and things settled down and they settled in Lakeside, Ne. in a blizzard in 1978. Before that they must have lived on 4 or 5 ranches after leaving Hall Cattle in 1974. Through the years Francis worked at many different jobs, including, Taco John's, Woolrich Manufacturing, Electric Hose, selling insurance, running her own candy store, book keeper, selling diet powder, ranch cook, hay hand, possibly something I have forgotten, and most importantly ....loving mother and wife. Francis's first cancer diagnosis and surgery was in 1990, she was cancer free for nearly eight years before the return of the cancer and her next surgery. since then it has been a pretty regular event every year to year and a half. Not too long after the first surgery she found her true calling and returned to school to become a nurse. After graduating with honors from WNCC School of Nursing she began working at Box Butte General in Alliance. While at BBGH she was in on the beginning of the Kidney dialysis Unit and obtained her Certification and RN status. After working at BBGH for over ten years she came home one day and informed her life mate that she was going to begin working as a traveling nurse. After giving her mate a book called "Who Moved My Cheese" and assuring him that she was not insane. She began a much loved and interesting career as a traveler. Over the next 8 years or so she lived and worked from California to West Virginia, from Larado, Texas to Loveland, Co and Memphis. Always returning to Lakeside to heal from surgeries and rest between jobs. In 2009 the traveling jobs dried up somewhat because of the economy and her mate was trying to heal from a heart condition and not doing a very good job of it. Francis came home on a cold winter day and said....."Want to move to Las Vegas?" she had found a job there and was tired of being cold. Again she had to produce the book "Who Moved My Cheese" and told her mate to read it again. April 1st, 2010 they loaded her car and his car and moved to the Las Vegas Valley. She worked in the Dialysis field and Home Health Care field, enjoying taking care of and improving the quality of life of many people in the 8 years living there. Febuary of 2018 she finally had to retire, after the many cancer surgeries and treatments over the years, she was trying to care for patients that were in better shape than her. She was walking with a walker or cane to the door and then leaving it outside while tending to the client. She finally retired as Director Of Nurses for Bright Star of Henderson and tried to accept that someone should take care of her. They moved back to Alliance in November of 2018 and have enjoyed being home again. Francis received excellent care from the medical community here in Alliance and enjoyed renewing old friendships and being close to family. Francis is survived by her life mate of 51 years Gene; her sisters Robyn Hall Mundt of Crawford, NE and Lynn Sanchez of Tyler, TX; Brother Daniel Albon Hall of Palmer, AK; Brothers-in-Law David Shaw of Alliance, NE and Carl Shaw Sr. of Bridgeport, NE; and Sister-in-Law Ellarae Watson of Grandby, CO. Blanca was born March 25, 1963 in Madera, California to Marcelo and Maria Natividad (Valdez) Escamilla. Growing up she helped raise her younger siblings, as the family travelled for work. During these travels Blanca met the love of her life, Jose Martinez. They were united in marriage on March 25, 1984 in Scottsbluff, NE. To this union three wonderful daughters were born.

Blanca was very talented. She enjoyed creating things for her family and others. As a result of that joy, she turned sewing into a career. She worked several years as a seamstress at a local shop. One of her greatest loves in life was being a mother but most of all a grandmother. Her grandchildren will never forget the time she spent with them, playing games, doing puzzles, watching shows, drinking coffee, and hearing her say I Love You.

Blanca was an active member of New Life Ministry Church in Scottsbluff. She was always going above and beyond doing God’s work and taking on a caring role for many. Her willingness to help whenever needed was always a priority. She exemplified living faith. Her compassion and kindness towards others was second to none. That compassion is what made her the best wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and daughter.

Blanca is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Jose Santos Martinez of Scottsbluff; daughters: Alma (Stephan) Sanchez, Maria “Hopie” (Joshua) Frueh, and Josefa “Josie” (Richard) Gallegos all of Scottsbluff. She relished her role as Grandma Blanca to Abigail, Josiah, Uriah, Jaxon, and Alexander and hopes that she taught them to love God with all of their heart. Left with decades of fond memories are her father Marcelo Escamilla and siblings Maria DeJesus (Estaben) Martinez, Jose (Sumara) Escamilla, Daniel (Theresa) Escamilla, Felipe (Patrica) Escamilla, Tomas (Lupita) Escamilla, Adan (Griselda) Escamilla, Eva Escamilla, and Dominga (Rosendo) Saucedo all of Texas; sister-in-law: Genoveva Escamilla of Scottsbluff; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Eugene E. “Gene” Walker, 93, passed away Saturday, December 5, 2020 at Box Butte General Hospital.

He was born on March 11, 1927 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Alliance to Fay and Helen (Hansen) Walker.

Gene served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a lifelong Alliance area farmer and a member of the Eagles Club.

On June 15, 1948 he was united in marriage to Betty J. Hashman.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, his sons and their wives, Rick and Janet, Dan and Jackie and Dennis all of Alliance and his daughter and her husband, Diane and Ron Trowbridge of Brighton, CO, his grandchildren Erica Muhr, Landy, Nathan, Brooks, Dylan, Hayden &amp; Quinton Walker, Stephanie &amp; Kaitlyn Schafer, Mackenzie Stabnow, &amp; Saige Rasmussen and 19 great-grandchildren.&nbsp; He is also survived by his sister, Arlene Howell of Sun Lakes, AZ.

Patricia A Dorshorst, 84, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 3, 2020 at Chadron Community Hospital. She was born April 28, 1936 to Lyle and Atha Myers along with siblings, Donna, Gary and Anita. She married Gary Dorshorst on July 9, 1953.&nbsp;

She is survived by her children, Terri (Don) Bruner of Las Vegas, NV; Tod (Janet) Dorshorst of Hay Springs, NE; Tom Dorshorst of Lincoln, NE; Teena Gering (fiancé Brad) of Cheyenne, WY; 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Her sister Anita (Jim) Nordstrom of Chadron, NE;&nbsp; bother Gary Myers of Goddard, KS; sister-in-law Patricia (Ron) Dorshorst of Hay Springs; and numerous nephews, neices and extended family members.&nbsp;

Helen Cynthia (Landers) Turechek, 97 of Cody, Wyoming passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 at the West Park Hospital Long Term Care Center. Helen was born April 26, 1923 in Riverton, Wyoming to Floyce David Landers and Carrie Blomberg Landers.&nbsp; She was the wife of the late George W. Turechek III of Cody, daughter Deb Streich and her husband Jack Streich of Captain Cook, HI and son Randy Turechek and his wife Donna Nason Turechek of Cody; ten grandchildren, David Turechek, Troy Turechek, Tami Turechek Ross, Mindi Fauss Bassetti, Brad Fauss, Michelle Turechek Salway, Kelly Turechek Clark, Jenny Turechek, Nick Turechek and Erica Turechek; 15 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Turechek, Jr. one son, Robert Turechek and his wife Karen Mingus Turechek of Dallas, TX, two sisters Lorraine Wilson and Lola Hamilton, and three brothers, Earl Landers, Dave Landers and Glen Oak.

Helen was a graduate of Mountain View, Wyoming High School in 1940 and attended Barnes Business College in Denver. During WWII she worked at Remington Arms making bullets to help the war effort. Most of her working life was spent as a bookkeeper. She worked for Cover Jones Motor Company in Alliance, Nebraska where she lived from the early 1950s to 1994 when she and George retired to Cody. While in Nebraska she was the captain and secretary of her bowling team for several years.

After moving to Cody Helen became a snow bird and spent winters in the Bullhead City Arizona area where she enjoyed visiting the casinos and making items with her crafts group. In her later years she relinquished the winter sojourns to Arizona.

The family extends a thank you to the staff and wonderful care givers at Cody Regional Health Long Term Care Center.

Helen Cynthia (Landers) Turechek (1923 - 2020)

Gary Ray Fickel, 73, of Michell, NE, formerly of Crawford, passed away on December 5, 2020, at the Ft. Meade Veterans Home.

He was born on May 5, 1947 in Crawford, Nebraska, the son of Elwood Coyde Fickel and Martha Irene (Wohlers) Fickel. Gary graduated from Crawford High School, class of 1965. In 1966 he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Naval Construction Battalions better known as the Navy Seabees. He completed a tour in Vietnam and worked on the experimental sea lab project. While on leave he met his wife, Trudy, who was working at Warren Drug in Crawford. After completing his service, they were married in South Range, Wisconsin. They celebrated 50 years of marriage June 27, 2020.

Gary grew up and lived on the ranch his parents established. When newly married he was employed by the USDA Beef Research Program at Ft. Robinson. Then he worked with feedlots in Alliance, NE, Sterling, CO, and Leoti, KS. While living in Kansas he began working for USDA Crop Insurance and then transferred back to NE working for Crop Insurance and ranching with his dad. In 1981 Gary and Trudy, with their two daughters, moved to the ranch. In 1986, their son Coyde was born. Gary served one term as Dawes Co. Commissioner and became a licensed cattle buyer. Gary’s biggest interest and favored work was raising Hereford cattle. He enjoyed all things Hereford, attending shows, sales, judging, and sale barns.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Monty Fickel. Surviving in addition to his wife Trudy M. (Nelson) Fickel, are his daughters Delanie Jean Hudnall, and her husband, Eric, of Columbus, NE; Janelle Rae Winkelman, her husband Ted, of Chadron, NE; and son, Coyde Eli Fickel, of Encampment, WY. One grandson, Austin Lang, of Ogallala, NE and two granddaughters, Madeline and Lillian Hudnall; and expecting on great grandson, Rhett, (Austin) in February of 2021; sister-in-law, Gerry (Monty) Fickel, many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 11, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron, Nebraska with Reverend Craig Collins officiating. Burial will follow at the Crawford City Cemetery in Crawford, Nebraska.

Orville B. “Grif” Griffin passed away quietly in his sleep on Tuesday December 2, 2020 at the Ponderosa Villa in Crawford, Nebraska.

Grif was born on August 1, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois to Orville B. Griffin, Sr. and Louise W. (Lelois) Griffin. Grif grew up in the small town of Wheeler, Indiana along with his sister Margaret. Grif graduated from Wheeler High School in 1952 and then joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He served as an Electronic Technician on the U.S.S. Gregory, a destroyer in the Pacific.

Grif was stationed in San Francisco, California when he met his future wife, Jacqueline B. Streiff. Grif and Jackie were married in Daly City, California on March 11, 1955. From this marriage four children were born: Michael L., Kristin W., Laura L., and Jeffrey A.

Grif had a varied career with many different companies in many different locations. He was most proud of his work with the pioneering companies of the new computer age, starting in the late 1950’s through the 1970’s in the Santa Clara Valley (now known a Silicon Valley). He was equally as proud of starting a new business and career as the owner of Snowbird Transportation in Bountiful, Utah in the 1980’s.

Grif and Jackie moved back to Indiana in the early 1990’s to be near his parents. After Jackie passed in 2000, Grif moved to Crawford, Nebraska where he has lived for the past 19 years.

Grif was preceded in death by both of his parents and his beloved wife, Jackie. Grif is survived by his sister Margaret Allen-Schilf and his four children: Michael Griffin (Donna) of Crawford, Nebraska; Kristin Griffin of the Philippines; Laura (Griffin) Reed of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and Jeffrey Griffin (Deborah) of Hurricane, Utah, as well as twelve grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.

Orville B. “Grif” Griffin (1933 - 2020)

Some people only walk this earth for a short time. Their departure reminds us that angels are watching over us. Earlier this week, Elzetta Ann Green 50, rejoined her heavenly family and gained her wings November 30th, 2020.

Zetta was a compassionate spirit whose passion was caring for others. Working as a LPN was one way she got to express her care for others. One of her greatest joys in life was spending time with her granddaughter and pets.

Zetta is survived by her daughter Casondra Raney (Kyle Raney), granddaughter Shay lee Raney, parents Diane and John Prelle, and step siblings. She is preceded in death by grandson Wyatt&nbsp; Raney, step brother Jared, and grandparents Elzetta and Jay Lucas.

There will be a memorial service at a later date.

Elzetta Ann Green (1970 - 2020)

Donald D. Ruleaux, 89, of Chadron, NE passed away peacefully at his home with his daughter Mary, son-in-law Duane, and his friend Lynne by his side.

Don was born in Martin, SD on June 19, 1931 to a French Canadian Native American father and an English Mother. He spent his early years growing up on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. When Don was entering the fourth grade, the family moved to Gordon, NE, where he attended school and graduated in 1950. His post-secondary education includes Kansas City Art Institute, a BA in Art Education from Chadron State College, MA in Art Education from Arizona State University, and George Washing University in Washington DC.

His teaching experience spans several decades and includes grade schools, Jr. and Sr. High Schools and colleges and universities in Gering, NE; Spearfish, SD; Lead, SD; Curtis, NE; McCook, NE; Hastings, NE; Vermillion, SD; and Chadron, NE. He had several other related work experiences, the favorite of these working as an artist/draftsman for the movie Lakota Women, filmed in SD. His exhibitions and awards number over 100 and are too numerous to mention individually. One the most prestigious was the Nebraska Governors Award of Excellence in Art Education. Don served in the United States Navy and the Army Reserves.

In 953, Don married Betty Lou VanBuskirk of Rushville, NE. T this union they added 6 children. In 1999, Don and Betty moved back to Chadron to retire. They spent their time gardening and enjoyed travelling around the country visiting their children and grandchildren. Don continued his artwork and did several silverpoint drawings of residents of Chadron which he then gifted to them. Don also did silverpoints of his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by Betty, his wife of 60 years, his parents, one brother, six sisters, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is survived by his children: Frank (Lisa) Ruleaux, Donald (Ardeia) Ruleaux, Mary (Duane) Hall, Francelia (Larry) Iverson, Beau (Sandy) Ruleaux, and Robert (Kari) Ruleaux; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a future date, followed by a celebration of life.

Out of this union, they had two sons, Michael and David. Throughout her life, she loved taking vacations in Mexico, cooking and baking, working on craft projects, reading books, traveling the country to watch her grandson’s sporting events, attending car shows, spending time wining and dining her two daughter-in-laws, and most of all being with her family every minute she could. Geraldine “Geri” Fay Anthony (1947 - 2020)

Laura was born to Steve &amp; Carol Balius in Gordon NE on June 25, 1985, joining two older sisters.&nbsp; Laura lived and loved the western way of life from an early age, spending lots of time on the back of horses and in tractors before she could walk.&nbsp; She passed away on December 1, 2020.

Elementary school was completed at Cherry County rural schools.&nbsp; She graduated from Gordon High School in 2004 where she was active on the volleyball and basketball teams.&nbsp; She pursued a double major of Ag Business and Animal Science at South Dakota State University and graduated in December of 2007– tirelessly working 3 on-campus jobs and active within multiple organizations.&nbsp; She worked for JBS/Five Rivers Colorado Beef in Lamar, CO for several years before her love of the Sandhills pulled her home.&nbsp; She returned to the Balius ranch full time in 2010.&nbsp; Laura looked forward to every season on the ranch, but especially branding when she was able to work and socialize with neighbors and friends.&nbsp;

She loved good horses, good cattle, and wide open spaces.&nbsp; Laura was fiercely competitive and loved a challenge - which advanced from card games with her dad, to basketball, to being an incredible “Cattle Connoisseur”.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents Carl &amp; Dorothy Nielsen and Chet &amp; Louise Balius, and nephew Caleb Mills.

She is survived by her parents Steve &amp; Carol, sisters Amber (Trent) Carroll and Karla (Andrew) Mills, nieces Ella &amp; Nora Carroll and nephews Ethan &amp; Wyatt Mills, and numerous relatives and friends throughout the country.

A memorial has been established in memory of Laura and will honor her love of western life. Donations may be sent in care of Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home, PO Box 366, Gordon, NE 69343.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held later in 2021.

 </figure>Laura was born to Steve &amp; Carol Balius in Gordon NE on June 25, 1985, joining two older sisters.&nbsp; Laura lived and loved the western way of life from an early age, spending lots of time on the back of horses and in tractors before she could walk.&nbsp; She passed away on December 1, 2020.Elementary school was completed at Cherry County rural schools.&nbsp; She graduated from Gordon High School in 2004 where she was active on the volleyball and basketball teams.&nbsp; She pursued a double major of Ag Business and Animal Science at South Dakota State University and graduated in December of 2007– tirelessly working 3 on-campus jobs and active within multiple organizations.&nbsp; She worked for JBS/Five Rivers Colorado Beef in Lamar, CO for several years before her love of the Sandhills pulled her home.&nbsp; She returned to the Balius ranch full time in 2010.&nbsp; Laura looked forward to every season on the ranch, but especially branding when she was able to work and socialize with neighbors and friends.&nbsp;She loved good horses, good cattle, and wide open spaces.&nbsp; Laura was fiercely competitive and loved a challenge - which advanced from card games with her dad, to basketball, to being an incredible “Cattle Connoisseur”.She was preceded in death by her grandparents Carl &amp; Dorothy Nielsen and Chet &amp; Louise Balius, and nephew Caleb Mills.She is survived by her parents Steve &amp; Carol, sisters Amber (Trent) Carroll and Karla (Andrew) Mills, nieces Ella &amp; Nora Carroll and nephews Ethan &amp; Wyatt Mills, and numerous relatives and friends throughout the country.A memorial has been established in memory of Laura and will honor her love of western life. Lorraine Rauch, 69, ended her journey on this Earth that we call "life" fittingly on Thanksgiving Day, for she lived a life full of blessings and had much to be thankful for. But she left this world confident of another, better life to come. For those of you reading this obituary who knew her, we would like to thank you for the part you played in her life. She treasured your friendship. She was born in Alliance, NE on November 2, 1951 to Harold Ackerman and Norma Ackerman (Jacobs). Lorraine was the biological mother of two children, who were able to connect with her again after 40 years. When Lorraine’s children were young, she introduced them to God and the church. She spent many years trying to find and make a better life for herself. She soon found a job at the Alliance Courthouse where she worked many years until she was diagnosed with dementia. Lorraine loved animals, especially dogs and cats, and she also loved music and dancing. She leaves behind only memories of her warmth, positivity, and lovingkindness. The family wishes to send a special thank you to all the wonderful doctors and staff at Central City Care Unit, who cared for her as one of their own mothers for many years and became her dear friend.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet Flikke; son, Christopher Phillips; sisters, Deb Neeley (Joe), Kathy Saylor; nephews, Greg Ackerman, Brad Brew, and Trey Neeley; niece, Elizabeth Harrison; three grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, sister Jolene Brew, brother-in-law Steve Brew, and great-granddaughter Kaleigh Fife.

Lorraine wished to be cremated and graveside service and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Alliance Animal Clinic.
