OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Freight railroads and their unions are facing increasing pressure from business groups and the White House to settle their contract dispute before Friday's looming strike deadline.

The pressure stems from concerns that halting railroad deliveries of raw materials and finished products that so many companies rely on would be, in the words of the head of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, an “economic disaster.”

A White House official said President Joe Biden and members of his cabinet were in touch with the unions and railroads Monday as part of their efforts to avert a strike. And for the second time in the past week, Labor Secretary Marty Walsh sat down at the negotiating table Sunday to urge the parties to reach a deal. Walsh postponed a planned to trip to Ireland this week to remain close to the talks.

A Labor Department spokesperson said Monday that it’s crucial that the parties remain at the negotiating table and come to an agreement because “a shutdown of our freight rail system is an unacceptable outcome for our economy and the American people.”

Suzanne Clark, the head of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said Monday that “a national rail strike would be an economic disaster — freezing the flow of goods, emptying shelves, shuttering workplaces and raising prices for families and businesses alike.”

The chamber joined a number of other business groups, including a coalition of 31 agricultural shipping trade groups, in sending letters to Congress urging lawmakers to be prepared to step in and block a strike if the two sides can't reach an agreement by the end of the week. The chamber said if it comes to that, Congress should impose the terms recommended by a Presidential Emergency Board that Biden appointed this summer.

The Association of American Railroads trade group put out a report last week estimating that shutting down the railroads&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/economy-congress-government-and-politics-a53abd85fa6f8b3ccd622222ea9a4c46">would cost the economy $2 billion a day.</a>

The coalition negotiating on behalf of the nation's biggest freight railroads — including Union Pacific, CSX, Norfolk Southern, BNSF and Kansas City Southern — has announced eight of the 13 tentative agreements needed to avert a strike by some 115,000 rail workers.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-norfolk-government-and-politics-eeedec386f2acba5d63181436ca03f3f">deals</a>&nbsp;that have been announced so far have closely followed the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-strikes-a83dffef79d38e36dc25588b19bf54b4">Presidential Emergency Board’s recommendations</a>&nbsp;that called for 24% raises over five years, $5,000 in bonuses and one additional paid leave day a year. But the two biggest unions representing conductors and engineers have been holding out because they want the railroads to go beyond those recommendations and address some of their concerns about&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-lawsuits-5123fda3d039543700b23d939e0bdda2">strict attendance policies</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-aab7d3084a8d17d8d721d2cb750be323">working conditions</a>.

The railroads have said they would begin curtailing shipments of hazardous materials and some other goods Monday in advance of a possible work stoppage at the end of the week. That would ensure that containers of those dangerous goods aren't left stranded along the tracks.

The heads of the Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers — Transportation Division union that represents conductors, and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen union that represents engineers,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/transportation-strikes-congress-climate-and-environment-90ec66e850dae76a3215a9fcaef71e53">criticized that decision</a>&nbsp;as a move to increase pressure on shippers and Congress to intervene.

Pressure mounts on US railroads and unions to reach a deal

As governor, I’ve prioritized strengthening Nebraska’s presence abroad.&nbsp; Ninety-five percent of the world’s population lives outside of America’s borders.&nbsp; We must reach these international customers to grow Nebraska and create opportunities for our kids and grandkids.

Last month, I led a successful trade mission to the United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland.&nbsp; It’s an opportune time to engage both countries.&nbsp; As the UK navigates their exit from the European Union (commonly known as Brexit), they are looking to strengthen relationships in the US.&nbsp; At the same time, Ireland’s economy is booming.&nbsp; In 2021, its Gross Domestic Product grew 13.5%.&nbsp; Ireland is home to a number of inventive ag tech companies looking to grow their presence internationally.

Nebraska has a lot to offer both countries as they look to grow trade with the United States.&nbsp; In particular, we highlighted our reputation as a great home for insurers and our global leadership in agriculture—especially in beef and ethanol production.&nbsp; We also met with top government ministers to explore ways to reduce barriers to trade.&nbsp; Our trade delegation included insurance experts, farmers, ranchers, and ethanol producers.&nbsp; They shared Nebraska’s story with British and Irish leaders and were great ambassadors for our state.

The potential to grow Nebraska’s insurance industry was a primary reason why we chose the UK as a trade mission destination.&nbsp; The UK has Europe’s largest insurance industry. &nbsp;Following Brexit, insurers there are looking to develop relationships in the US. &nbsp;Our state punches far above its weight in insurance—ranking 1st&nbsp;nationally in surplus and 3rd&nbsp;in total assets. &nbsp;Nebraska’s reputation for fair, consistent, and transparent insurance regulation is highly attractive to companies looking to invest.&nbsp;

While in London, we met with the Association of British Insurers.&nbsp; It represents 200+ member companies that collectively manage investments of nearly £1.7 trillion.&nbsp; We made the case for Nebraska as an ideal place for these companies to get started as they seek to roll out products and services nationwide in the United States.&nbsp; Eric Dunning, Director of the Nebraska Department of Insurance, made great connections with insurers and regulators in the UK during our mission.&nbsp; These relationships are very promising as we seek to recruit investment in insurance.

Growing opportunities for Nebraska agriculture was another top goal of our trade mission.&nbsp;&nbsp;It was especially timely for us to be in the UK to promote Nebraska ethanol.&nbsp; Last year, the UK upped its ethanol blending requirement for all gasoline from 5% to 10%, generating demand for biofuels.&nbsp; Right now, there’s also a lot of concern in the UK about rising fuel prices and their impact on families struggling to deal with inflation.&nbsp;

As America’s #2 ethanol-producing state, we’re well positioned to meet the UK’s need for clean, affordable fuel.&nbsp; Our trade delegation met with the UK’s Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to tout the benefits of ethanol. &nbsp;We highlighted its cost-effectiveness and the steps we’re taking to help ethanol plants capture and store carbon to reduce their environmental footprint.&nbsp;

Consumers in the UK want to know where their food comes from, and they are very conscious of the environment.&nbsp; Our cattlemen were able to tell the story of their multi-generational family ranches, and the great work they’re doing to care for their land and animals.&nbsp; For instance, our ag delegation shared the success of the U.S. cattle industry producing 66% more beef while reducing its carbon footprint by 40% since the 1960s.&nbsp; They also highlighted that U.S. beef production has some of the lowest greenhouse gas emissions in the world—10-50 times lower than in many other parts of the globe.

In Ireland, we had great meetings to discuss technological advances in agriculture.&nbsp; Ireland specializes in food production and has a thriving ag tech sector.&nbsp; We met with ag startups to discuss all that Nebraska has to offer as a hotbed of agricultural innovation; business-friendly state; and great place to live, work, and raise a family.

We also had high-level discussions with government leaders about reducing barriers to trade.&nbsp; In the UK, we met with Penny Mordaunt, Minister of State for Trade Policy.&nbsp; The UK is looking to connect directly with individual states with bilateral trade talks stalled at the national level.&nbsp; In Ireland, we met with Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Ireland’s prime minister and head of government to talk about economic development. &nbsp;

This month, I’m continuing my work to grow international trade.&nbsp; Last weekend, I attended the Midwest-US Japan Association conference to meet with key leaders from Japan—our state’s 2nd&nbsp;largest export market.&nbsp; I’ll also be attending Husker Harvest Days (HHD) this week. &nbsp;Since 2019, HHD has had an International Visitors Center to give guests an up-close look at the farm equipment, machinery, and technologies that are made here and used all over the world. &nbsp;Additionally, I’ll spend time this week with leaders from VDMA—the biggest association for manufacturing in Germany. &nbsp;During those meetings, I’ll be able to highlight the great success German companies like CLAAS and Graepel have had growing their businesses in Nebraska.

Pete RickettsAs governor, I’ve prioritized strengthening Nebraska’s presence abroad.&nbsp; Ninety-five percent of the world’s population lives outside of America’s borders.&nbsp; We must reach these international customers to grow Nebraska and create opportunities for our kids and grandkids.Last month, I led a successful trade mission to the United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland.&nbsp; It’s an opportune time to engage both countries.&nbsp; As the UK navigates their exit from the European Union (commonly known as Brexit), they are looking to strengthen relationships in the US.&nbsp; At the same time, Ireland’s economy is booming.&nbsp; In 2021, its Gross Domestic Product grew 13.5%.&nbsp; Ireland is home to a number of inventive ag tech companies looking to grow their presence internationally.Nebraska has a lot to offer both countries as they look to grow trade with the United States.&nbsp; In particular, we highlighted our reputation as a great home for insurers and our global leadership in agriculture—especially in beef and ethanol production.&nbsp; We also met with top government ministers to explore ways to reduce barriers to trade.&nbsp; Our trade delegation included insurance experts, farmers, ranchers, and ethanol producers.&nbsp; They shared Nebraska’s story with British and Irish leaders and were great ambassadors for our state.The potential to grow Nebraska’s insurance industry was a primary reason why we chose the UK as a trade mission destination.&nbsp; The UK has Europe’s largest insurance industry. &nbsp;Following Brexit, insurers there are looking to develop relationships in the US. &nbsp;Our state punches far above its weight in insurance—ranking 1st&nbsp;nationally in surplus and 3rd&nbsp;in total assets. &nbsp;Nebraska’s reputation for fair, consistent, and transparent insurance regulation is highly attractive to companies looking to invest.&nbsp;While in London, we met with the Association of British Insurers.&nbsp; It represents 200+ member companies that collectively manage investments of nearly £1.7 trillion.&nbsp; We made the case for Nebraska as an ideal place for these companies to get started as they seek to roll out products and services nationwide in the United States.&nbsp; Eric Dunning, Director of the Nebraska Department of Insurance, made great connections with insurers and regulators in the UK during our mission.&nbsp; These relationships are very promising as we seek to recruit investment in insurance.Growing opportunities for Nebraska agriculture was another top goal of our trade mission.&nbsp;&nbsp;It was especially timely for us to be in the UK to promote Nebraska ethanol.&nbsp; Last year, the UK upped its ethanol blending requirement for all gasoline from 5% to 10%, generating demand for biofuels.&nbsp; Right now, there’s also a lot of concern in the UK about rising fuel prices and their impact on families struggling to deal with inflation.&nbsp;As America’s #2 ethanol-producing state, we’re well positioned to meet the UK’s need for clean, affordable fuel.&nbsp; Gov. Ricketts: Strengthening Nebraska’s presence abroad

CHADRON – Thanks to what is perceived as the largest incoming class of transfer students in school history, Chadron State College’s enrollment increased based on figures compiled by the Nebraska State College System (NSCS) on the 10th day of classes.

As of Sept. 2, Chadron State College’s headcount was 2,317, an increase of 59 students (2.6 percent) from the previous year. Additionally, CSC’s total full-time equivalency improved to 1,802, an increase of 61 full time students from 2021 (3.48 percent).

Contributing to the college’s positive growth was 219 new transfer students and a preliminary retention rate of the Fall 2021 full-time freshman class of nearly 73 percent.

“The growth of our transfer student population and our overall enrollment is encouraging,” said Vice President for Enrollment Management Dr. Tami Selby. “Enrollment is not just counting the incoming new students, but also making sure we keep the students we have enrolled. Our high retention rate is a direct result of faculty efforts and initiatives that show students CSC is a wonderful place to live and learn.”

In 2021, CSC’s incoming transfer class consisted of 149 students, which was 18 percent higher than 2020’s class. Although CSC’s freshman and graduate incoming classes weren’t as large as they were last year, Selby is hopeful the second 8-week class sessions will entice students.

“Although the fall semester officially began in August, the Enrollment Management team hasn’t stopped working with students who are still thinking about college, and our recruiters are talking to students every day,” she said. “The second 8-week classes provide a great opportunity for students and we expect more to enroll as we get closer to October.”

While the increase in overall enrollment is good news, Selby and her staff are pleased the college’s student body continues to become more diverse. Twenty percent of all students identify as a student of color, an increase of almost two percent from 2021. The diversity of the freshmen and transfer cohorts also show positive growth and are more diverse than the entire student body. This year, nearly 26 percent of the incoming freshmen and transfers identify as a student of color. In addition, CSC has 21 international students enrolled.

As a system, the NSCS, which is comprised of Chadron, Peru, and Wayne State Colleges, continues to see overall growth in enrollment. As of Sept. 2, the NSCS had an overall increase in headcount of 0.2 percent. According to the NSCS, the State Colleges have increased enrollment by 6.3 percent since 2018.

SCOTTSBLUFF — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested one person following a fatal crash in Box Butte County this weekend.

The crash occurred at approximately 12:10 p.m. MT Saturday. 

Troopers responded to a report of a two-vehicle crash that involved a motorcycle and a car at the intersection of Highway 385 and Link 7E. The motorcycle rider, identified as Kirby Schimmels, 77, of Houston, Texas, was transported to the hospital in Alliance, where he was pronounced deceased.

Preliminary investigation shows that the motorcycle, ridden by Schimmels, was northbound on Highway 385 when a Nissan Sentra failed to yield at a stop sign on Link 7E. The motorcycle then collided with the Nissan, which was driven by Jayesh Desai, 55, of Mumbai, India.

Troopers arrested Desai for motor vehicle homicide.&nbsp; He was lodged in Box Butte County Jail.

Chadron Fur Trade Days Committee donates to Chadron Fire Department

CHADRON – Chadron State College celebrated the recently completed $32 million Math Science Center of Innovative Learning (COIL) Wednesday. More than 180 businesses, families, and organizations supported the project with $3.65 million in donations.

A slate of speakers, including Nebraska State College System (NSCS) Chancellor Paul Turman and CSC President Randy Rhine thanked the assembled crowd of supporters, community members, and employees.

“This project is a fine example of a great Nebraska public-private partnership. Projects like this require a great deal of planning and dedication to conceive and construct. We had a great team in our architectural firm Bahr Vermeer and Hacker, and our construction manager Adolfson &amp; Peterson. Of course, this couldn't have happened without the private support of alumni and friends. Today is a day where we celebrate the college and its donors,” Rhine said.

Over the past 10 years more than $80 million of construction projects have been completed on campus including the Coffee Agriculture Pavilion and Rangeland complex, the Chicoine Center, the Sports Complex, the Track and Field Complex, and Eagle Ridge housing.

“And we're not done yet,” Turman said. “This new facility is a true work of art and an architectural wonder. It is amazing and inspiring to our students, western Nebraska, and this region.”

Renovation of the building has long been a top priority for the NSCS Board of Trustees. In 2019, Nebraska Senators and Gov. Pete Ricketts approved funding, which involved a complete renovation of the existing structure and addition of a new nearly 17,000-square foot north wing. Groundbreaking for the project took place in Sept. 2020.

The building meets contemporary laboratory and teaching standards and includes a lecture hall with two 120-inch projection screens, active learning classrooms and labs, study spaces, extensive audio-visual technologies. The building also includes the Dr. Lois Veath Planetarium, the Eleanor Barbour Cook Museum of Geology, and the High Plains Herbarium.

Construction of the original building began in 1968 and it was dedicated in March 1971 at a cost of $1.09 million.

Rhine noted that Turman proposed the terms of the bond that enabled the Math Science COIL to be completed in one phase instead of three. Turman, in turn, thanked Nebraska State Sen. John Stinner, and former and current staff at the NSCS Office in Lincoln for helping him with brainstorming efforts and proposing various options. In 2019, Nebraska State Senators approved $28.5 in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nscs.edu/news-detail/2019-05-30_Math-Science" target="_blank">bonds</a>&nbsp;to finance the project.

The Math and Science faculty were recognized for their sacrifices to make the project a success. They vacated the building and moved to temporary labs, classrooms, and offices in other buildings on campus for two years.

“They never complained. Our faculty have been incredibly supportive and patient as we move through this project,” Rhine said. “The original building served us for more than 50 years. The academic programs that resided there served our students state and region with significant success. The RHOP (Rural Health Opportunities Program) was conceived and championed by Dr. (Jay) Druecker. This facility will open new possibilities for CSC to continue preparing STEM teachers and medical professionals.”

Turman said the 1971 facility desperately needed to be upgraded.

“This is a monumental project, a great facility so students can learn at the highest levels. I’m very excited to see what COIL will provide CSC, our ability to recruit students, and then bring those students right back into the workforce here in Nebraska in years to come,” Turman said. “We have so many great programs in place like RHOP to create unique STEM opportunities for students to stay in the rural areas of the state. As you get the opportunity to walk through this space, I think what it has to offer our students is going to spark your amazement.”

He thanked Chadron State Foundation CEO Ben Watson and the Foundation for their fund-raising efforts which allowed the NSCS to move quickly on the project. Turman also thanked the&nbsp;<a href="https://das.nebraska.gov/309/" target="_blank">309 Task Force</a>&nbsp;that invested about $1.3 million. The&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/2021/cscs-math-science-project-receives-nebraska-environmental-trust-grant.html" target="_blank">Nebraska Environmental Trust</a>&nbsp;awarded CSC a $483,500 grant for the project.

Chadron State Foundation Board Chair John Smith acknowledged the foundation’s board of directors for their support, along with past presidents of the foundation board and Watson’s predecessor, Connie Rasmussen.

“We thank their whole staff for all the hard work they have put forth and efforts they’ve made because this wouldn't have been possible without them. This building will surely be home to unlimited experiences that will be part of the story of so many students. This fantastic facility is really just a new beginning. Be proud of the legacy you have. This building may be built by steel, concrete, bricks, and mortar but is also built on dreams, sacrifices, dedication, perseverance, and the true spirit of positive growth. We call that the Nebraska way,” Smith said.

Other speakers included Kelly Schoch,&nbsp;a senior of Columbus, Nebraska, majoring in Chemistry. She is a pre-medicine student in RHOP and president of the Health Professions Club who plans a career in women's medicine, and Math Instructor Jordan Haas.

“I would like to thank our professors, the design team, and everyone who made the COIL building a possibility. It gives students a feeling of community and belonging,” Shoch said.

She said positive shadowing experiences with a doctor in her hometown encouraged her career path decision.

“This led me to my ultimate goal of returning to rural Nebraska as an obstetrician and gynecologist in underserved areas,” she said.

“I felt like this was where I was meant to be. CSC is all about the people. The people make this place what it is. Our faculty inspire students day in and day out. The reason they're so great is they care about the job they're doing and the people they're doing it for,” Haas said.

Haas said the building is a conduit for creating relationships that will endure.

“A talented educator can inspire with just a blackboard and a piece of chalk. I believe our faculty could teach in a parking lot, a cave, or in an outdated building. But now we have a proper venue for my talented colleagues to really show their stuff and inspire students. This is a tool to provide us with the opportunity to captivate students for years to come. Imagine the sense of community and learning that takes place outside the classroom when they have places to sit together, to talk, to study, and share ideas,” Haas said.

Turman, in turn, thanked Nebraska State Sen. John Stinner, and former and current staff at the NSCS Office in Lincoln for helping him with brainstorming efforts and proposing various options. In 2019, Nebraska State Senators approved $28.5 in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nscs.edu/news-detail/2019-05-30_Math-Science" target="_blank">bonds</a>&nbsp;to finance the project.The Math and Science faculty were recognized for their sacrifices to make the project a success. They vacated the building and moved to temporary labs, classrooms, and offices in other buildings on campus for two years.“They never complained. Our faculty have been incredibly supportive and patient as we move through this project,” Rhine said. “The original building served us for more than 50 years. The academic programs that resided there served our students state and region with significant success. The RHOP (Rural Health Opportunities Program) was conceived and championed by Dr. (Jay) Druecker. This facility will open new possibilities for CSC to continue preparing STEM teachers and medical professionals.”<figure>

I’m very excited to see what COIL will provide CSC, our ability to recruit students, and then bring those students right back into the workforce here in Nebraska in years to come,” Turman said. “We have so many great programs in place like RHOP to create unique STEM opportunities for students to stay in the rural areas of the state. As you get the opportunity to walk through this space, I think what it has to offer our students is going to spark your amazement.”He thanked Chadron State Foundation CEO Ben Watson and the Foundation for their fund-raising efforts which allowed the NSCS to move quickly on the project. Turman also thanked the&nbsp;<a href="https://das.nebraska.gov/309/" target="_blank">309 Task Force</a>&nbsp;that invested about $1.3 million. This building will surely be home to unlimited experiences that will be part of the story of so many students. This fantastic facility is really just a new beginning. Be proud of the legacy you have. This building may be built by steel, concrete, bricks, and mortar but is also built on dreams, sacrifices, dedication, perseverance, and the true spirit of positive growth. We call that the Nebraska way,” Smith said.Other speakers included Kelly Schoch,&nbsp;a senior of Columbus, Nebraska, majoring in Chemistry. She is a pre-medicine student in RHOP and president of the Health Professions Club who plans a career in women's medicine, and Math Instructor Jordan Haas.“I would like to thank our professors, the design team, and everyone who made the COIL building a possibility. It gives students a feeling of community and belonging,” Shoch said.She said positive shadowing experiences with a doctor in her hometown encouraged her career path decision.“This led me to my ultimate goal of returning to rural Nebraska as an obstetrician and gynecologist in underserved areas,” she said.“I felt like this was where I was meant to be. CSC is all about the people. The people make this place what it is. Our faculty inspire students day in and day out. The American Legion Post 7 and Sallow's Museum is honored to conduct a flag disposal ceremony on Friday, September 16at the Museum at 1101 Niobrara Ave, Alliance, NE at 8:30 am.

The observance of proper respect for the Flag of our country and the education of our citizenry in the proper courtesies to be paid the Flag is an essential element of The American Legion's program since 1937.

The approved method of disposing of unserviceable Flags has long beem that they be destroyed by burning.

Also, the purpose of this Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags is to have a dignified tribute to the U.S. flag and to its symbolism, as well as encourage proper respect for the Flag of the United States.

If anyone has an unserviceable flag that is in need of disposal, you may drop it off at the Museum at your earliest convenience.

The community is encourage to attend, weather permitting and while you are there take in the Museum.

Alliance American Legion to hold flag disposal ceremony 

The City of Alliance would like to express our deep appreciation to WESTCO for their substantial donation of $40,000 to the Alliance Fire Department.

Following the unfortunate loss of their building at the corner of Black Hills and 3rd Street, David Briggs, General Manager of WESTCO contacted the City to express their gratitude that the Alliance Fire Department was able to isolate the fire and prevent further loss of materials and equipment. Mr. Briggs expressed his desire to further demonstrate their gratitude and proceeded to seek and was able to secure a grant in the amount of $20,000. WESTCO matched this grant dollar-for-dollar, for a total donation $40,000. 

Mr. Briggs and Mr. Jess Wilmer presented the check to the City Council at its meeting held September 6. 

Of this generosity, Fire Chief Troy Shoemaker stated “the fire department is very humbled by WESTCO’s overwhelming generosity. We have always had a great relationship with WESTCO and enjoy working with their staff members to accomplish some of our training goals. WESTCO has assisted us with training our members in grain bin rescues and most recently sponsored Propane Emergencies training that we conducted in the old KMART parking lot.”

 These funds will be used to replace equipment damaged while fighting the WESTCO fire as well as to purchase other small equipment needs.

SCOTTSBLUFF -&nbsp;Area high school juniors and seniors and their parents/guardians are invited to learn more about college options at a Scottsbluff area college fair, hosted by Western Nebraska Community College. The fair will be held on September 13 from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. in Cougar Palace on the Scottsbluff Campus. Educational Planning Programs are sponsored by the Nebraska Association for Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers and EducationQuest across the state each year.

Representatives from 39 colleges, universities, and military branches will be attending. The purpose of the program is to give high school students and their parents/guardians an opportunity to discuss admission requirements, housing, financial aid, scholarships, internships, and specific majors.

WNCC hosting college fair for local high school students

CHADRON – September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and CSC Health Services is providing Question Persuade Refer (QPR) certification training for employees, as well as a speaker, Rhianna Brand, on Sept. 19, in Lakota and Ponderosa Rooms at noon.

QPR is designed to help individuals notice suicide warning signs and learn how to offer support to a person who may be struggling. QPR training focuses on three steps to help prevent suicide. First, recognize the warning signs of suicide. Second, know how to offer hope, and third, know how to get help and save a life. No RSVP is necessary.

Three alternative times in the Student Center’s Bordeaux Room:

Brand’s speech is co-sponsored by Panhandle Public Health District. Follow-up discussions about student resources will follow the speech and counselors will be on-site to assist any attendees triggered by the content.

Brand, of Casper, Wyoming, was a victim of sexual abuse at a young age and physical and mental abuse as she grew older.

A suicide survivor, Brand speaks about how others did not know she was struggling with a mental health crisis because she was cheerful and had a good academic history. She is also a loss survivor, losing her uncle and multiple friends to suicide.

She is an appointed member of the Wyoming Behavioral Health Advisory Council and a QPR Master Trainer.

Her message will cover forming genuine human connections and performing safety checks as well as sharing her experiences with alcohol, substance abuse, and working through them.

CSC provides education for Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

 Neb. — The heads of the nation's two largest rail unions said 
Sunday that the freight railroads' move to begin delaying some shipments
 ahead of this week's looming strike deadline is only an attempt to get 
shippers to increase the pressure on Congress to intervene and block a 
work stoppage by imposing a contract on workers.

The heads of the 
unions that represent engineers and conductors — the Sheet Metal, Air, 
Rail and Transportation Workers — Transportation Division union and the 
Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen union — issued a joint 
statement blasting the move, which the railroads announced late Friday. A
 strike or lockout won't be allowed until this coming Friday, but the 
railroads appear to be bracing for one by saying they would begin 
curtailing shipments of hazardous materials and other chemicals on 
Monday to ensure carloads of those dangerous products won't be stranded 
along the tracks if the trains stop moving.

“The railroads are 
using shippers, consumers, and the supply chain of our nation as pawns 
in an effort to get our unions to cave into their contract demands 
knowing that our members would never accept them. Our unions will not 
cave into these scare tactics, and Congress must not cave into what can 
only be described as corporate terrorism,” said Jeremy Fergunson with 
SMART-TD and Dennis Pierce with the BLET union.

Those two unions 
have been demanding that CSX, Union Pacific, BNSF, Norfolk Southern, 
Kansas City Southern and the other railroads go beyond the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-strikes-a83dffef79d38e36dc25588b19bf54b4">proposed deal recommended</a> by a group of arbitrators <a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-transportation-strikes-ba718974eb14fcd615d606bfcdffb3d2">President Joe Biden appointed.</a> They want them to address concerns about <a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-lawsuits-5123fda3d039543700b23d939e0bdda2">strict attendance policies</a> that they say make it hard to take any time off and <a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-aab7d3084a8d17d8d721d2cb750be323">increasing workloads</a> after the railroads cut nearly one-third of their workforces in recent years.

The
 railroad trade group has said there’s no way trucks can pick up the 
slack if the railroads stop moving because roughly 467,000 additional 
trucks a day would be needed to handle all the cargo trains haul and 
there is already a shortage of truck drivers.

Five of the 12 railroad unions that together represent 115,000 workers had already reached <a href="https://apnews.com/article/government-and-politics-497a373594515a27e7435cdf97df7a41">tentative agreements</a>
 based on the Presidential Emergency Board's recommendations that will 
deliver 24% raises and $5,000 in bonuses over a five-year contract 
that's retroactive to 2020. The coalition negotiating on behalf of the 
railroads announced three more tentative agreements Sunday, so deals 
covering roughly 45,000 workers have now been announced. Members of the 
unions with tentative deals still have to vote on them.

If the two
 sides can't agree on a deal by the end of the week, Congress is 
expected to step in to block a strike because of the dire economic 
consequences if a strike happens because so many businesses rely on 
railroads to deliver their raw materials and finished products. The 
Association of American Railroads trade group put out a <a href="https://apnews.com/article/economy-congress-government-and-politics-a53abd85fa6f8b3ccd622222ea9a4c46">report</a>
 last week estimating that the economy would take a $2 billion a day hit
 if the trains stop moving and passenger traffic would be disrupted 
nationwide because Amtrak and many commuter railroads use tracks owned 
by the freight railroads.

A spokeswoman for the trade group said 
Sunday that railroads had to take action to prepare for the possibility 
of a work stoppage because the deadline is so close, but the industry 
remains committed to trying to negotiate agreements with its unions.

“Operational
 changes required to prepare for a safe, orderly suspension were delayed
 as long as possible. With less than a week away from a potential 
service interruption, carriers are obligated to take appropriate actions
 to prepare, which include making plans for handling HAZMAT shipments, 
as well as other freight that may be impacted if service must be reduced
 or stopped," the AAR spokeswoman said.

Already, a number of trade
 groups representing railroad shippers have urged lawmakers to be 
prepared to block a strike. A coalition of 31 agricultural groups sent a
 letter to Congress last week, and the Fertilizer Institute trade group 
joined the chorus of concerned shippers Saturday because shipments of 
ammonia and other fertilizers will be delayed.

“Supply chains are 
already strained and there is currently zero elasticity in rail 
transportation,” TFI President and CEO Corey Rosenbusch said. “This 
situation will get exponentially worse every day there is no 
resolution."

He said more than half of all fertilizer is hauled by
 railroads. More than 75% of all finished vehicles are taken from 
factories to dealerships by train, and countless other products move by 
rail.

The railroad trade group said that a single railcar can 
carry up to 2,000 UPS packages, or enough plastic pellets to make some 
two million two-liter bottles.

Unions blast rail move to delay shipments before deadline

KEARNEY – The University of Nebraska at Kearney Alumni Association has announced 11 alumni award recipients that will be recognized during the University of Nebraska at Kearney homecoming festivities that will take place Oct. 27-29.

The 42nd Annual Distinguished Alumni Awards will be given out during the luncheon on Friday, Oct. 28, at 11:30 a.m. in the Ponderosa Room in the Nebraskan Student Union. Tickets are $25 per person ($30 starting Oct. 17), $15 for children ages 12 &amp; under, and can be purchased until Oct. 20 at unkalumni.org/homecoming or by calling the UNK Alumni Association at 308-698-5271.

The Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet begins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, in the Ponderosa Room with a social hour. A dinner follows at 6:15 p.m. with five former student athletes and one coach being inducted into the UNK Athletic Hall of Fame. To purchase a ticket for the Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet, visit unkalumni.org/homecoming by Oct. 20. Tickets are $35 per person ($40 starting Oct. 17), $15 for children ages 12 &amp; under.

Those being inducted are Bill Backes (1967) for football and men’s track and field; Shauna (Birchard) Graham (2006, MBA 2008) for women’s track and field; Dusty Jura (2008, MBA 2015) for men’s basketball; Troy Stonacek (1986) for football; Susan ‘Dusty’ (Walston) Hatt (2002) for swimming and diving; and Darrell Morris for coaching (football). On Saturday, Oct. 29, the day kicks off with the annual homecoming parade in downtown Kearney at 10 a.m. Following the parade, alumni and community members are invited to attend the Loper Alumni Brews &amp; Brats tailgate in Loperville at Cope Stadium starting at noon. The Loperville area is open until the 2 p.m. UNK football game kickoff against Northwest Missouri State University.

Alumni are invited to an alumni social on Thursday, Oct. 27, at Cunningham’s on the Lake from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. RSVPs for the event are requested at unkalumni.org/alumnievents by Oct. 25.

The 2022 UNK Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Awards go to Gregg L. Christensen (1975), Dan O’Neill (1981), Diane M. Simard (1988) and Colonel Scott B. Thompson (1983). The Jim Rundstrom Distinguished Alumni Service Award recipient is Jack C. Kreman (2004), and the Distinguished Young Alumnus Award will go to Allston D. Marble (2008).

The College of Education Distinguished Educator of the Year is John T. Street, Ed.S. (1975, MAE 1979, 1981, ED 1986). This year’s Dr. Donald E. Fox Distinguished Chemistry Alumna is Cheri A. Barta, Ph.D. (2002). The Gary Thomas Distinguished Music Alumnus award goes to Clayton P. Moyer (2001, MAE 2010), and the College of Business &amp; Technology Distinguished Alumnus is Larry Peterson, Ph.D. (1979).

The International Distinguished Alumnus award will be presented to Mahabir Pun (1992, MAE 2001) during the International Food Festival on November 13 as part of the lead up to the James E. Smith Conference on World Affairs on November 14-15 at UNK.

Gregg Christensen resides in Lincoln, Nebraska, and is retired after a long career in education. Following graduation, Christensen taught marketing and business classes at Cozad High School for eight years.

Christensen left the high school classroom in 1983 and spent the next 35 years of his career with the Nebraska Department of Education. While there, he served as the entrepreneurship education, work-based learning and special projects specialist; entrepreneurship and career education specialist; director of marketing education and the state advisor for Nebraska DECA (an association of marketing, management and entrepreneurship students). While at the NDE, Christensen developed the Nebraska Workplace Experiences Continuum and support website as a resource for educators, labor and economic development professionals. He was also the project lead for the Nebraska Career Clusters Virtual Business/Industry Tours website videos and editor of the accompanying teacher and student guides. In addition, he was the lead facilitator or co-facilitator for 40+ Nebraska school districts’ reVISION Strategic Planning meetings

In 1998, he took a one-year leave of absence from NDE to serve as a senior lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, with a special focus on marketing education, entrepreneurship and work-based learning. Christensen also served as an adjunct instructor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1999.

He continues to serve on the Nebraska Entrepreneurship Task Force (NET-Force) as well as the Nebraska Entrepreneurship Best Practices Summit planning committee. Since 1984, Christensen has served as a consultant and leadership/management trainer for Prime Time Associates and Legacy Leadership Unlimited, focusing on strengths-based leadership development. Christensen is a CliftonStrengthsTM and Builder Profile 10TM coach and mentor.

Christensen’s dedication to entrepreneurial education has been recognized with several honors and awards, including the University of Nebraska College of Business Entrepreneur Advocate award, Consortium for Entrepreneurship Education Hall of Fame award, Nebraska Hall of Fame Gregg Christensen Distinguished Service award, the DECA Honorary Life Membership, Nebraska DECA Honorary Life Membership, along with many more.

Christensen is a Grand Island Northwest High School graduate and earned a bachelor’s degree in education with an endorsement in distributive education from Kearney State College in 1975. He also holds a master’s degree in vocational education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
