September 15, 2025 (GERING, NE)- The 2025 Western Nebraska Engine Academy, hosted by Gering Volunteer Fire Department, brought together more than 30 agencies across five states for hands-on wildfire training September 12–14.

“This academy is about preparing for the real thing," said NEMA State Training Officer, Dave Reisen. "We create a realistic environment where firefighters and Incident Management Team members can learn to make critical decisions in the moment."

The academy featured live, event-driven scenarios that gave participants the opportunity to build real-world skills and complete position-specific task books.

"Our strength comes from collaboration," said Incident Commander Trainee, Andrew Giralt. “Bringing together so many agencies, each with unique skills and experience, creates an incredible learning environment and builds relationships that carry over into real incidents."

WNEA extends its appreciation to everyone who played a role in making this year’s event both safe and successful. The academy would not be possible without the ongoing collaboration and support of local, state, and federal partners. Key contributors included the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, U.S. Forest Service, Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, Nebraska State Fire Marshal, Nebraska Forest Service, Nebraska Air National Guard, and many other dedicated local agencies.

Western Nebraska Engine Academy Completes Successful 2025 Training in Gering

ALLIANCE, Neb. – On Sunday, September 14th, at approximately 3:35 p.m., officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Yellowstone Avenue for a reported burglary in progress.

Upon arrival, officers located two juveniles inside the residence. A third juvenile was observed outside, holding a ladder that had been used to gain entry through a window. The juveniles were found in possession of a video gaming system, burglary tools including a pry bar, and keys belonging to one of the vehicles at the residence.

All three juveniles were charged with burglary. One juvenile, who is currently on probation, met the criteria to be transported to a juvenile detention facility. The other two juveniles were released to their guardians.

The Alliance Police Department commends Sergeant Josh Norris and Officer Tyrel Hoatson for their excellent work in the swift apprehension of these suspects.

The commission consists of seven members who serve four-year terms. For the purposes of the current vacancy, applicants can be of any political party and live in any of the three congressional districts.

Gift of Hope Cancer Foundation to host 22nd annual fundraiser Sept. 16

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — A steak dinner, auctions, and live music will all be part of the 22nd annual Gift of Hope Cancer Foundation fundraiser Tuesday, Sept. 16, at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds.

The evening begins with a social hour at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Guests will enjoy a New York strip steak with baked potato, salad, dessert bar, and two complimentary drinks. Entertainment will be provided by the Flat Rock Irregulars, with a silent auction running from 5 to 7 p.m. and a live auction to follow.

Organizers Janet Cox and Kathy Hahn said the fundraiser plays a vital role in helping local cancer patients. The Gift of Hope provides financial assistance to families across western Nebraska — stretching as far as Lexington to the east, the Wyoming border to the west, and into South Dakota and Kansas. Support can include help with gas, utilities, and rent.

“All of our funding comes from donations and events like this banquet,” Hahn said. “Your donation means hope, relief, and strength for someone facing the fight of their life. No one should battle cancer alone.”

The foundation assists as many as 80 people each year, and every dollar raised stays in the region. Cox called the banquet “a really, really fun evening” and “a rewarding evening because we feel like we can help a lot of people.” She added that the community has been supportive across generations throughout the fundraiser’s 22-year history.

Organizers say the night promises not only good food and community spirit but also big-ticket auction items, including Husker volleyball tickets and Husker football tickets — with one package offering 50-yard line seats in the clubhouse.

🎙️Serving Hope: Inside the Gift of Hope’s 22nd Annual Fundraiser

Nearly a quarter century has passed since the attacks of September 11th, 2001. That day’s tragic events, the heroic acts of so many Americans, and the extraordinary shows of patriotism and national unity which followed are forever etched in our national memory. We will always remember the courage and sacrifice of those who passed and those whose lives were forever changed 24 years ago.

Just as the anniversary of 9/11 was reminding Americans to commemorate the endurance and aspirations which bring us together, sadly, our country was shocked by the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Kirk was a patriot, husband, and father who lived his conservative values by championing free speech for all. Regardless of viewpoint, political violence is never acceptable. I am glad law enforcement quickly identified and apprehended the suspect and is preparing to obtain justice for Kirk’s murder.&nbsp;

The future of our shared values, protection of civil society, and guarantee of the rights and freedoms given by God and recognized by our Declaration of Independence and Constitution are not passively attained. While the sacrifice of countless Americans who have answered the call of duty demonstrate the cost of freedom, the task of promoting the safety of every American falls on each generation. Unlike the past administration, President Trump has made national security and law enforcement efforts top priorities. We recognized our nation’s security need when we enacted $175 billion in border enforcement funding in July alongside our working families tax cut, and we recognized it again this week when House Republicans advanced legislation to provide the administration with the resources needed to meet this mission through the passage of the Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

The many threats to peace around the globe demand sustained attention to national security. Several of our allies face the reality of war every day while our enemies in Tehran, Beijing, Moscow, and Pyongyang conspire against us. Threats multiply and evolve constantly, whether on the battlefield or in cyberspace. The robust funding in the NDAA allows our military to stand ready with effective deterrence against any and all threats. In the words of Ronald Reagan, “War will not come again...if we will speak honestly of the dangers that confront us and remain strong enough to meet those dangers.”

Recent events have shown both the importance of and fragility of our constitutional rights. While the First Amendment is foundational to the fabric of our communities and public discourse, freedom of speech and other basic human rights remain under threat by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and other nations around the world. Because of this, I supported measures in the NDAA to counter China’s malign influence. I am also a cosponsor of the Protect America’s Innovation and Economic Security from CCP Act. This bill would reestablish the initiative to curb theft of American intellectual property and spying on our academic institutions perpetrated by the CCP.

Our adversaries profit from dividing us, and political polarization only makes it more difficult to protect our country from enemies, both foreign and domestic. As we remember the victims of terrorism perpetrated by these enemies, as well as honor the legacies of those who risked everything to protect our rights and liberties, let us not forget strength ultimately comes from unity.

CHADRON, Neb. – In August, the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE) awarded approximately funding to Chadron State College and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln through the third round of the state’s&nbsp;Grow Your Own Teacher Apprenticeship Competitive Sub-Grant Opportunity.

<a href="https://www.education.ne.gov/press_release/nebraska-expands-teacher-apprenticeships-with-1-million-investment/" target="_blank">This award</a>&nbsp;is made possible by funding from the U.S. Department of Labor’s State Apprenticeship Expansion Formula grant and an annual investment from the state legislature, according to a press release by David Jespersen, public information officer with the NDE.

Adam Fette, CSC assistant professor and author of CSC's $71,000 portion of the grant proposal, said the award strengthens CSC’s mission to support schools, invest in the people who call them home, and ensure the next generation of teachers comes from the heart of local communities.

CSC’s portion of the grant will cover tuition, textbooks, fees, and certification exam costs for three apprentices. Each participant will complete about 60 credits online, supported by advising, mentoring, and residencies in their school districts. The latest round of funding adds three new CSC partnerships with Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, Loup City, and Freeman Public Schools.

Fette said the apprenticeship program supports collaboration between educator preparation programs and school districts to develop, train, and retain teachers. By investing in local paraprofessionals and community members already working in schools, the program helps rural districts address shortages in areas such as special education and elementary education.

“Apprentices are more likely to remain in their communities after certification, creating a sustainable pipeline of teachers,” Fette said. “Local communities are at the heart of this program. Districts identify candidates, often paraprofessionals or community members with strong ties to their schools, and provide mentoring, supervision, and employment during the residency. Because these apprentices are invested in their communities, the program builds a workforce that mirrors the student population and is far more likely to stay long term.”

CSC and the University of Nebraska–Lincoln will use the sub-grant funds to grow eight new partnerships with school districts while expanding partnerships and removing financial barriers for apprentices pursuing teaching credentials.

Since launching the pilot program and completing three rounds of funding, Nebraska’s Teacher Registered Apprenticeship initiative has grown to include eight educator preparation programs partnering with 50 schools, including 43 public school districts and seven non-public schools, with more than 200 apprentices projected to participate.

Fly-Fishing, Fly-Tying Class to be Held at Chadron SP

GERING, Neb. - The 2025 Western Nebraska Engine Academy is currently underway in Gering, running from September 13–14. Firefighters from across the region are participating in hands-on, live fire training designed to simulate a large-scale wildfire incident.

Live fire exercises are actively taking place within the Buffalo Creek Wildlife Management Area this weekend. These controlled burns provide valuable real-world training while reinforcing safety, coordination, and wildfire response strategies.

Residents and travelers in the area may see smoke and visible flames in the Buffalo Creek area on Saturday and Sunday. These activities are part of the planned exercise, with all necessary safety measures and emergency resources on site to ensure the training is conducted safely.

The event also supports the development of position-specific task books for those working toward roles on a Type 3 Incident Management Team. Each participant is working within their area of expertise to complete tasks that contribute to the team’s effectiveness and readiness.

Live Fire Training Underway at Western Nebraska Engine Academy

CHADRON, Neb. – Prints by nine Chadron State College students, designed during a Spring 2025 course with Art Professor Laura Bentz, were published in August in Volume 4 of the Honeycomb Project by Candace Garlock.

The students are Bailey Dean of Highmore, S.D., Noah Fields of Seward, Neb., Amber Harvey of Centennial, Colo., DeShaun Merrill of Hot Springs, S.D., Caleb Nadig of Nisland, S.D., Tyra O’Connor of Ekalaka, Mont., Angelyse Perez of Newcastle, Wyo., Kasiah Sayaloune of Chadron, and Jaidyn Warrior of Bloomfield, Neb.

Garlock said&nbsp;<a href="https://candacenicolgarlock.com/books-catalogs" target="_blank">the project</a>, composed of interconnected hexagonal frames, symbolizes the bonds between humans and the environment. The pieces will debut at the Metro Gallery in Reno on Oct. 2. Students at two colleges in Nevada, and professional artists in California, Arizona, and Nevada, also contributed to the volume.

Bentz learned about the project through her affiliation with the Rocky Mountain Printmaking Alliance (<a href="http://www.rockymountainprintmakingalliance.org/" target="_blank">RMPA</a>).

“When I saw the prospectus, I contacted Candace and asked if she would consider work from CSC since we are closer to the West than the Midwest. As with many printmakers, Candace embraces the concept of collaboration and agreed,” Bentz said.&nbsp;

Bentz assigned her printmaking students to create and participate in the event, reusing and reworking components of other prints they had created, using additional media like paint to create a new image just for this exhibition.

In a statement in the book, Garlock said the college workshops at CSC and in Nevada evoke the image of bees congregating in a hive.

“These events transcend mere activities; they provide nurturing space for sharing ideas, stories, and emotions. In such an atmosphere, connections flourish, enabling participants to experience the delightful surprises and insights that often emerge from the blending of diverse perspectives,” Garlock wrote. “The complexity of the honeycomb mirrors the dynamics of a community, where individuals come together, each contributing their unique talents and skills to enhance the collective well-being and growth.”

Perez, who will graduate in December with a degree in Art: Art Studio, submitted a painted hexagon.

Although her work has been published in the Tenth Street Miscellany, this was her first piece included in a major publication.

“I love experimenting with art and pushing the limitations of what I can do. I work with all art forms because I strive to experience new ways to create,” Perez said.

Perez has done some freelance graphic design work, photography, and completed projects in Memorial Hall to support the faculty and staff.

“In the future, I hope to simply continue to connect and build more support for the arts in communities,” she said.

O’Connor, who will graduate from CSC with a degree in Art: Graphic Design in May 2027, said this was her first piece in a major publication, although she has submitted drawings and paintings to magazines and local shows.

She has primarily focused on pencil drawings and acrylic paintings, but has also enjoyed experimenting with other mediums while at CSC.

“Perhaps I am yet to find my favorite medium. I would love to spend more time in charcoal drawing and sculpture,” she said. “After completing this hexagon project, I was inspired by the concept of creating or accumulating many unique parts to create a unified project. It was how I would approach quilting, and I think I would like to play with this idea more in the future,” O’Connor said.

CSC Students’ Prints Included in Publication

There is a reason why we take vacations. They&nbsp;improve overall well-being by providing a necessary break from daily routines and chronic stress. Vacations reduce stress and burnout, increase happiness and motivation, boost productivity, foster creativity, and improve relationships by offering time for rest, relaxation, personal growth, and connection with loved ones.&nbsp;

For the last two weeks we've been talking about the scarcity mindset. A scarcity mindset is a way of thinking that focuses on something we don’t have enough of. We become so obsessed with that lack that we have tunnel vision and cannot deal with anything else. We neglect other obligations, other needs. And we make poor decisions.

We find ourselves losing patience quickly and snapping at people, especially those we love. Minor annoyances aren't tolerated. Overdue notices on bills we forgot to pay? Missed appointments. We have trouble paying attention or following our schedule because our mind is wandering back to whatever is creating our stress.

Our brains need a vacation, too. Stepping away from daily pressures can reset our brains, improve focus, memory, and problem-solving skills. How can we do that?

Start by spending more time outside. Go for a walk every day. When you have a break at work, go outside, maybe walk a few blocks. It's amazing how much that can help clear your head. Visit parks; we have so many wonderful parks in Alliance and in the Panhandle. Fish, birdwatch, hike. Nature can be regenerative!

Get more exercise. If you use your exercise bike for hanging clothes, you might want to sign up for a class at the Alliance Recreation Center. Or find a workout buddy and go to one of the gyms or exercise centers in town.

Reduce your screen time. Set aside your phone and your tablet. Walk away from the computer and the television. The constant alerts make you think you are multitasking, but instead you've lost focus and overloaded your brain with mental clutter.

Quality sleep is critical to good mental and physical health. If you aren't sleeping well, get more exercise and get away from those screens.

Nutrition is also important. Stress causes us to make unhealthy eating choices. It's too quick and easy to do a quick fast-food drive thru. Plan ahead by stocking healthy choices in your house, both for quick meals and for snacks. Make lists before going to the grocery store.

Use the calendar app on your phone for all your appointments. Each morning you'll see whether you have to be somewhere and at what time.

Finances can be a little tougher, but there are some things you can set up. First, sign up for any benefits your employer offers, things like retirement programs and insurance. They may lower your paycheck, but they pay off in the future!

Look at automatic bill pay options through your bank. If you know your rent is transferred automatically on the first of the month, you won't stress about getting a check to your landlord. Auto bill pay is available for City utilities, Black Hills Energy, internet services, phone bills, etc. Be careful, though. Some of those bills, especially the utilities, vary quite a bit from one month to the next. Banks will charge big overdraft fees if there isn't enough money in your account, not just for that bill, but for everything that comes through until your next deposit. As long as you can maintain a large enough balance, automatic bill pay eliminates much of the stress of getting bills paid on time.

Take some time. Give yourself some breaks to clear your head and reset your brain.

ALLIANCE, Neb.&nbsp; — Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested multiple people in connection with a suspected homicide in western Nebraska.

Thursday, investigators located human remains in rural Box Butte County. Investigators are working to positively identify the person. The person is believed to be the victim of a homicide.

Investigators have arrested Tamara Bingham, 26-years-old, of Alliance, for first degree murder. Investigators have also arrested Matthew Landreth, 36-years-old, as an accessory to a felony.

This is an active investigation and remains ongoing.

NSP has been assisted by the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office, Alliance Police Department, Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office, WING Task Force, the Sheridan and Box Butte County Attorneys and the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office.

NSP continues investigating a missing person case involving Ebram Anthony Sifuentes, 32-years-old, who is missing from Alliance. He had reportedly last been seen on August 27.

The MAC meets from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the third Thursday of every other month. The next meeting will be held on September 18 at the South Omaha Library at 2808 Q St. in Omaha.

Nebraska Medicaid Looking for Dental Professional to Fill Committee Position

The report contains 18-months of data collection related to NDCS operations, including constituent services, grievances, disciplinary appeals, use of force, medical, internal investigations, team member training compliance and special investigations. The data will be used to identify trends, improve processes and strengthen accountability.

“At NDCS, data and transparency are foundational to how we improve outcomes and serve the people of Nebraska,” said Director Rob Jeffreys. “Everything we do is centered on two core goals: keep people safe and give individuals the tools they need to succeed after incarceration.”

The Office of the NDCS Chief Inspector was established in 2024. NDCS Chief Inspector Geoff Britton is responsible for managing all constituent services, including inmate grievances and disciplinary appeals, as well as monitoring internal investigations and auditing agency policies and processes to ensure adherence to established best practices.

“This report represents the foundational summary of our efforts to conduct reviews, inspections, investigations, and analysis to promote internal oversight, supporting the NDCS mission to keep people safe,” said Britton.

Office of the NDCS Chief Inspector Releases Inaugural Report

LINCOLN, Neb. —&nbsp;The state of Nebraska has issued a health alert for Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs), also known as toxic blue-green algae, at Rockford Lake in Gage County. Cub Creek Lake in Jefferson County continues to be on health alert from last week.

Samples taken earlier this week at the lakes on alert measure above the threshold of eight parts per billion (ppb) of total microcystin, which is a toxin released by certain strains of blue-green algae.

When a health alert is issued, signs are posted to advise the public to use caution, and designated swimming beaches are closed during the alert. Recreational boating and fishing are permitted, but the public is advised to use caution and avoid exposure to the water, particularly by avoiding any activity that could lead to swallowing the water. Do not let pets get in the water or drink from the lake. People can still use the public areas for camping, picnics, and other outdoor activities.

Weekly sampling has been conducted at 56 public lake sites since the first week of May. The lakes will continue to be monitored weekly through the end of September. Paddlefish snagging season on the Missouri River opens Oct. 1, and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has several reminders for anglers hoping to fill a tag.

During the season, which runs through Oct. 31, anglers may snag paddlefish and nongame fish from Gavins Point Dam downstream to the mouth of the Big Sioux River at mile marker 734. Legal fishing hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Closed Areas –&nbsp;Snagging is not allowed off the north wall and in the area immediately below Gavins Point Dam powerhouse discharge canal. All inland waters remain closed to paddlefish harvest.

Permits –&nbsp;Snaggers must have an unfilled paddlefish tag and a valid fishing permit, if required, in their possession while fishing. From Gavins Point Dam downstream 0.6 miles, anglers must hold either a Nebraska resident or nonresident snagging permit, or a South Dakota resident permit. South Dakota nonresident permits are valid only downstream of this stretch. A total of 1,600 tags have been authorized, with 1,530 going to residents.

Tagging and Processing –&nbsp;Harvested paddlefish must be tagged immediately in the dorsal fin. Tags must not be altered or locked before attachment. Fish may be processed into two whole fillets only after the fishing trip is complete and upon leaving the river, with the tag and permit kept with the fillets.

Nongame Fish –&nbsp;Discarding nongame fish on the bank is unlawful.

The Passing Along the Heritage mentored youth hunting program sites at Lake Wanahoo now may be reserved.

Lake Wanahoo, a mile north of Wahoo in Saunders County, has seven hunting sites totaling 1,067 acres.

The PATH program is for mentored youth hunts where experienced mentor hunters can “pass along” their knowledge to youth, who must be aged 17 or younger to be eligible to hunt. Mentors may not hunt. This allows mentors to focus their attention on the youth, ensuring a safe and successful hunt.

Lake Wanahoo PATH Sites Open for Reservations

Waterfowl hunters are urged to be cautious to help prevent the spread of damaging aquatic invasive species this fall.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Zebra mussels, Eurasian watermilfoil, curly-leaf pondweed, brittle naiad and other aquatic invasive species can “hitchhike” on hunting gear and be spread by droplets of water or even tiny plant fragments.

Once spread, aquatic invasive species cause irreparable harm to aquatic ecosystems and waterfowl habitat, severely impeding hunting, fishing and boating for future generations.

Aquatic invasive species are spread by boaters, anglers and hunters not taking sufficient precautions against them. To prevent invasive species spread, Nebraska Game and Parks regulations require anglers, hunters, and boaters to conduct clean, drain, and dry procedures before leaving a water body. Hunters must remove any visible plants or mud from their gear and be careful to avoid using invasive plants, such as phragmites, in their hunting blinds. They are also required to ensure all water is drained from equipment before leaving and to let gear dry for at least five days or wipe it down with a towel before re-using.

Nebraska is one of the few states in the Midwest left without widespread zebra mussel invasions. The only water bodies in the state that have established zebra mussel populations are the Missouri River, Lewis and Clark Lake/Lake Yankton, Beaver Lake in Plattsmouth, and Offutt Air Force Base Lake. Observations of invasive aquatic plants have been on the rise in surrounding states and Nebraska.

Nebraskans hunting outside of the state should be especially cautious to not return with and introduce invasive species into Nebraska waters.

Waterfowl Hunters Can Prevent Spread of Aquatic Invasive Species

At the August Board Meeting, the Directors unanimously voted to place the entire District into a Phase I water quality management area. As such, the additional monitoring will be undertaken to determine if further management is needed to address nitrates in the groundwater. Along with the collection of data and information, education efforts on nitrates and the water supply will be provided. “The action taken by the Board is not meant to alarm the residents of the District rather to call attention to nitrates in the groundwater in an effort to avoid further regulations” stated Rich Zochol, Water Committee Chairman.

Historically, water samples have been obtained from multiple locations throughout the District including irrigation, domestic and observation wells. Analysis of the samples indicates there are areas where nitrate levels are rising. While nitrate does occur naturally, elevated levels are often the result of fertilizer that has been applied to crop fields. The maximum concentration limit for drinking water is 10 milligrams per liter.

The UNWNRD will be developing a monitoring plan to help better understand nitrates throughout the District and will incorporate soil sampling, isotope analysis to determine the nitrogen source, and sampling thought the season to evaluate nitrate variability. In addition to the evening performance, there will also be educational outreach and engagement with area students during the school day, including a student matinee and workshop.

Omaha Street Percussion Comes to Alliance

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;– Governor Jim Pillen has approved the adoption of newly drafted emergency regulations submitted by the Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission. He signed the regulations on Sept. 9.

Monday, the Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission held an emergency meeting to set limits on the number&nbsp;of plants cultivators may grow. The Commission’s recommendation was that no more than 1,250 flowering plants be possessed by each cultivator.

The Governor had asked the Commission to consider such a limitation to ensure that an excess of cannabis production would not lead to an unregulated and unintended black-market supply.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Governor Pillen Signs Revised Emergency Cannabis Regulations

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;– Governor Jim Pillen issued the following statement in reaction to the death of 31-year-old Charlie Kirk. Kirk, a conservative commentator, activist and founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot while taking part in an event at Utah Valley University earlier today.

“The news of Charlie Kirk’s assassination is devastating, not only for conservatives, but for supporters of liberty and free expression everywhere. Charlie stood fearlessly, not only for his own beliefs, but for engagement and debate. Indeed, he was doing just that when he died. He inspired countless young people with his principled activism, including on campus right here in Nebraska.

Suzanne and I are deeply saddened by this act of senseless political violence, and I ask that all Nebraskans pray for God’s grace and comfort to be brought to his wife and young kids. We must condemn and end political violence in America.”

Gov. Pillen is also asking that Nebraskans heed the proclamation issued this afternoon by President Trump requesting that U.S. flags be flown at half-staff, starting immediately and until sunset on Sunday, Sept. 14, in memory of Kirk. In alignment with the President’s order, all state, POW and other flags should also be flown at half-staff.&nbsp;&nbsp;
