LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), at the direction of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food and Nutrition Service (FNS), will pause Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits on October 29 due to the federal government shutdown. USDA has notified the state that federally funded SNAP benefits for November will be delayed if the shutdown continues into next month.

“This federal shutdown is completely avoidable, but Senate Democrats continue to refuse to pass a clean funding extension. That’s why this is the Schumer Shutdown,” said Governor Jim Pillen. “Because of D.C.’s political games, the SNAP benefits that many Nebraska families and kids depend on are about to be turned off. The Democrats locked Americans into this mess, and the Democrats hold the key to getting us out of it.”

“DHHS has a plan in place to immediately begin working with the USDA to process payments and get benefits to recipients as soon as possible when the government shutdown ends,” said CEO Steve Corsi.”

Current SNAP recipients may continue to use any remaining benefits on their EBT cards. Unspent SNAP funds remain accessible for nine months from the date of last use.

“While November SNAP benefit issuances may be delayed, DHHS staff remain ready to assist Nebraskans by accepting and processing applications, recertifications, and reported changes,” said Shannon Grotrian, Director of the Office of Economic Assistance.

Nebraskans who need assistance are encouraged to contact 211, a statewide resource and referral hotline. Story Time, LEGO Club and Search for Butterball Turkey at Alliance Public Library

LINCOLN, Neb. – October 23–31 is Red Ribbon Week, a time to reflect on the consequences of drug use and the role parents, educators, health care professionals, peers and all citizens of Nebraska can play in preventing drug use by encouraging healthy behaviors, raising awareness and directing those who need help to seek assistance.

The national Red Ribbon week theme is “Life’s a Puzzle, Solve it Drug Free.” The theme serves as a reminder that daily choices piece together a bigger picture and are the building blocks of the future. Every day, every individual has the power to make decisions leading to a brighter tomorrow.

Early education about healthy behaviors and intervention can reduce the impact of substance use and mental health disorders on families, classrooms and communities. Dependence on substances impairs an individual’s ability to work, interact with family, socialize with peers, and manage daily activities.

“Prevention is vital to helping individuals learn healthy coping skills, maintain their well-being, and keep communities safe. Youth, families, and communities are more resilient when action is taken to stop the initiation and progression of substance use. Engaging in conversations about the consequences associated with substance use and shedding light on the resources available to help people be in recovery at their own pace builds a stronger Nebraska,” said Thomas Janousek, Director of the Division of Behavioral Health within DHHS.

The first official Red Ribbon Week celebration was created by the National Family Partnership in 1988. The red ribbon symbolizes a continued commitment to reducing the demand for illicit drugs in our communities and to honor those who have given their lives fighting to keep communities safe. It was first worn in 1985 after drug traffickers killed Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique S. "Kiki" Camarena. Shortly after his death, citizens from his hometown of Calexico, California, began wearing red ribbons to remember him and commemorate his sacrifice.

Action to improve our communities and participate in Red Ribbon Week can be taken in several meaningful ways:

Events kick off Nov. 1 with unique special events and Christmas Markets including Ladies Night Out, the Pine Bough Bazaar, Shop Hometown Harrison, Kids Christmas Shopping and the the Kris Kringle Christmas Boutique. Other special occasions featured on the calendar are the Nutcracker Tea Party and Nutcracker ballet, the Spirits &amp; Cheers Gala, Historical Christmas Dinner and the Chadron Art Guild Sale. Prepare to host holiday gatherings at your home with a Mocktails for Beginners class and a Foraged Wreath Workshop or make a jingle bell accessory at the Jingle Bell Craft Workshop, just in time for the Crawford Jingle Bell Parade.

Black Friday is Nov. 28 this year, and Shop Small Saturday is Nov. 29. The organizations involved with ‘A Country Christmas’ urge residents and visitors to patronize local businesses in Harrison, Crawford and Chadron during the holiday season and all year long.

“We love joining forces with so many entities in Northwest Nebraska to pull off a well-rounded ‘Country Christmas’ for our community and surrounding area. With something for all demographics to enjoy during the holiday season, we are thrilled to continue adding to the Christmas cheer and holiday spirit while serving the community and our members the best way we can,” said Chadron Chamber Director Gabby Michna.

Chadron will celebrate Christmas on Main Dec. 4, bringing back a beloved tradition with Santa arriving on the Nebraska Northwestern Railroad train. Come out to Railroad Park to welcome Santa and then migrate one block south to the Downtown Plaza for food, live entertainment and the Community Christmas Tree lighting, followed by the Parade of Lights. Also taking place that evening is the Festival of Trees open house at the Dawes County Courthouse and the Chadron State College Holiday Concert at Memorial Hall.

Crawford’s Jingle Bell Parade and Community Tree Lighting will be Dec. 4 as well. Santa will make multiple appearances in Northwest Nebraska during ‘A Country Christmas’ as well, with his first-slated arrival Nov. 29 at The New Leaf Marketplace. He’ll return for numerous other appearances through Dec. 11.

Businesses, organizations and individuals can also help create the ‘Country Christmas’ winter wonderland for visitors and residents to enjoy. The annual Festival of Trees at the Dawes County Courthouse returns this year, and businesses and organizations are invited to set up a decorated tree at the courthouse. Specific Landfill Operations to be Closed  in Alliance According to Wind Speed

ALLIANCE, Neb. - On Tuesday, Oct. 28, at approximately 7:55 a.m., Officer Parker Dahlberg arrived at the Alliance Police Department’s gun range to begin setup for a scheduled training day. Upon arrival, Officer Dahlberg observed that the gate leading to the range was open. While this is not unusual, as multiple entities have authorized access to the roadway for adjoining properties, he proceeded to drive toward the range and noticed a vehicle parked along the access road that runs parallel to the range. Using binoculars, Officer Dahlberg observed what appeared to be a male lying in the roadway.

He immediately proceeded to the location and discovered a deceased male with a gunshot wound. The individual had been deceased for some time.

The evidence on the scene is consistent with a suicide. The coroner was notified, and next of kin have been informed. Due to the sensitive nature of the incident, no further information will be released.

Chief Leavitt and the Alliance Police Department extend their deepest condolences to the family during this difficult time.

Game and Parks Closed for Customer Service on Veterans Day

CHADRON, Neb. – Assistant Professor of Business Dr. Caitlin Redden made a presentation at the Association for General and Liberal Studies Oct. 2-4, in Louisville, Kentucky.

The title of Redden’s presentation was Re-fermenting Assessment: Using a Sour Mash Approach to Develop a Pillar-Based Assessment Model. Her session explained how CSC distilled the essence of its general education program to create a manageable assessment framework.

In her abstract, Redden wrote that to develop a sustainable and effective general education assessment process, a group of CSC faculty, administrators, and staff refined the most important elements of the Essential Studies Program.

Her presentation discussed the transition from a course-level assessment plan with 12 student learning outcomes to a pillar-based model with four overarching outcomes.

The sour mash approach involves a process where a portion of a previous batch is used to start a new one. To do this, the group Redden served on asked how they could create a sustainable, purposeful and meaningful assessment model using the existing foundation. Additionally, they defined the hallmarks of a Chadron State graduate. The process helped them identify four main themes that define a CSC graduate without starting from scratch.&nbsp;

“By creating four pillars for the Essential Studies Program, we have developed an actionable plan to recertify courses within the Essential Studies Program, create rubrics for each pillar, integrate these rubrics into Canvas using the SpeedGrader tool, and begin collecting data on student work,” Redden wrote in her abstract.

In the presentation, she discussed trials, tribulations and triumphs of the process with practical ideas for implementing a pillar-based assessment model in general education. She also included future goals for assessing student learning.

 </figure>CHADRON, Neb. – Assistant Professor of Business Dr. Caitlin Redden made a presentation at the Association for General and Liberal Studies Oct. 2-4, in Louisville, Kentucky.The title of Redden’s presentation was Re-fermenting Assessment: Using a Sour Mash Approach to Develop a Pillar-Based Assessment Model. Her session explained how CSC distilled the essence of its general education program to create a manageable assessment framework.In her abstract, Redden wrote that to develop a sustainable and effective general education assessment process, a group of CSC faculty, administrators, and staff refined the most important elements of the Essential Studies Program.Her presentation discussed the transition from a course-level assessment plan with 12 student learning outcomes to a pillar-based model with four overarching outcomes.The sour mash approach involves a process where a portion of a previous batch is used to start a new one. To do this, the group Redden served on asked how they could create a sustainable, purposeful and meaningful assessment model using the existing foundation. Additionally, they defined the hallmarks of a Chadron State graduate. The process helped them identify four main themes that define a CSC graduate without starting from scratch.&nbsp;“By creating four pillars for the Essential Studies Program, we have developed an actionable plan to recertify courses within the Essential Studies Program, create rubrics for each pillar, integrate these rubrics into Canvas using the SpeedGrader tool, and begin collecting data on student work,” Redden wrote in her abstract.In the presentation, she discussed trials, tribulations and triumphs of the process with practical ideas for implementing a pillar-based assessment model in general education. She also included future goals for assessing student learning.

CHADRON, Neb. – Kevin Coy, a Chadron State College alum and Academic Advisor with Upward Bound, spoke about the various ways he has built strength through overcoming adversity in his Graves lecture Oct. 21.&nbsp;

Coy, a Davenport, Florida, native, enrolled at CSC in 2014 on a football scholarship. After graduating from high school, he did not feel equipped to face the academic challenges of college, but he preserved at CSC and achieved a 4.0 GPA his first semester. His sophomore year, he continued to flourish and discovered he qualified for the Project Strive TRiO program as a first generation and low-income student.&nbsp;

“When I heard about the program, I said, ‘Sign me up.’&nbsp; That’s when my life began to change. After that, I went to [TRIO Director] Jen Schaer many days when I felt like quitting,” Coy said.&nbsp;

Schaer guided him to resources and provided encouragement for him to persist.&nbsp;

Today, Coy has come full circle and feels like his background of overcoming obstacles helps the high school students he advises in Chadron and Alliance.&nbsp;

“I enjoy what I do for them,” he said.&nbsp;

During his presentation, Coy outlined several areas of his life where he faced adversity, including sports, education, and family struggles.&nbsp;

Football had been a way of life since he was six years old, so when he suffered a knee injury in his senior year of high school, he continued his season, despite the injury, and played for 10 games. He eventually had surgery to repair the damage. He desperately wanted to earn a football scholarship and even though he had his sights set on Division I, former football assistant coach Craig Jersild convinced him to consider Chadron State College.&nbsp;

A torn ACL at CSC presented a new set of issues because Coy couldn’t access the medical procedures he needed in Nebraska, so he had to fly back to Florida several times where the care was covered by Medicaid. He found that yoga helped with his recovery.&nbsp;

“Football taught me there’s no ‘I’ in teamwork. Also, it really matters what you are doing when people aren’t watching, like time in the gym lifting weights,” Coy said.&nbsp;

Coy said his mother was a high school dropout at 15 when she had his older brother. As a child of one parent without a high school diploma, Coy’s chances were less than half that he would finish high school and only 11 percent that he would earn a college degree. Since his parents couldn’t help him at home with schoolwork, he learned to meet new people and ask others for help.&nbsp;

Family health problems and tumultuous relationships further complicated his youth in a community where he said drugs and guns were common.&nbsp;

His family lived with his grandmother who suffered a stroke when Coy was nine years old. He noticed when the EMT arrived to assess her on her porch.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“[The EMT] asked her to repeat the phrase ‘You can’t teach an old dog a new trick,’ and when she was unable to, a stroke was confirmed, and she was rushed to the hospital. I never saw her at home again,” he said.&nbsp;

A year later, his parents divorced, introducing increased financial stress.&nbsp;

“We would come home and not know if the lights or water were going to be turned off or if there was going to be food in the refrigerator,” Coy said.&nbsp;

An anonymous benefactor paid his tuition to transfer from public school to a Christian academy. At age 16, he came home to find an eviction notice pinned to the door. He gathered his belongings in a tote and couch surfed for his final two years of high school with a family whose child also attended the academy.&nbsp;

At 18, Coy went to visit his father and noticed he couldn’t lift his arm to shake hands. His father was also slurring his words. Remembering the symptoms of his grandmother’s stroke nine years earlier, Coy stepped into the role of assessing his father’s condition by asking him to repeat the same phrase the EMT asked his grandmother to repeat. When his father could not comply with his request, Coy drove his father to the nearest hospital. After being refused immediate help at the first hospital, Coy drove his father to another hospital where he received medical care.&nbsp;

Three points Coy said he follows to help with resilience are self-care, healthy coping, and celebrating small successes.&nbsp;

“I have a Bucket Of Small Successes, or BOSS, for my students. So, if they get an A on a test, they can drop that in the bucket and we can all celebrate it and they can build on it,” Coy said.&nbsp;

Coy summed up the sources of his resilience as faith in God, strong relationships and community, and a positive mindset. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to make his home with his wife, Taylor, whom he met at CSC and their two children&nbsp;

“What happens to you can create happiness, but joy is what you choose,” said Coy. “I choose to anchor myself in values and purpose, my family. And I take the perspective that I am blessed, not oppressed.”

Coy Speaks About Resilience at CSC

CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State College’s Bike Share program continues to roll right along.

The program, which provides bicycles to help students travel around campus and the community, was initially funded by a grant from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/2023/helmbrecht-initiates-bike-sharing-program-for-campus.html" target="_blank">Healthy Blue</a>&nbsp;and continues to be supported by that grant and supplemented by a Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska American Rescue Plan Act grant.

Students say the bikes save time, encourage exercise, and make daily life easier.

“They’ve been life savers when I’m running late for class or need to transport materials,” said Esosa Iyengunmwena, a senior majoring in Communication Arts from Levelland, Texas. “They’ve also been helpful for grocery shopping and exercise. I love them.”

Shelby Westinghouse, a sophomore majoring in Communication Arts from Hot Springs, South Dakota, said she uses the bikes for entertainment.

“My roommate and I ride the bikes around town on nice days. I have found that the bikes are a great way to have fun exploring town while taking a break from homework,” Westinghouse said.

Men’s Basketball Head Coach Chris Francis said the program has been a game-changer for his players.

Isaiah Randolph, a freshman Business major from Long Island, New York, said he rides to practice and uses the bikes to stay active on rest days.

“They give me an easy way to exercise and get around campus without needing a car,” he said.

Zach Smith, a senior majoring in Sport, Fitness, and Recreation from Hartford, Connecticut, said he rides everywhere on campus and often uses the bikes as a warm-up before basketball practice.

Randolph and Smith’s teammate, Patric Prince a junior majoring in Sport, Fitness, and Recreation from Grovetown, Georgia, enjoys using the bikes and since they are equipped with front baskets he’s able to carry mail and other items on campus.

Associate Director of Residence Life Christian Miller, who helps administer the bike share program, said maintaining the fleet requires teamwork. History Professor Dr. Kurt Kinbacher and the Assistant Directors of Residence Life help handle repairs and upkeep. There is also a self-help tire repair station at the Student Center on the north side where students can pump up tires and make minor repairs.

“That has been incredibly helpful,” Miller said. “It’s also important that bikes are returned to designated racks so others can use them.”

The program currently includes 26 bikes, including 10 recently purchased and assembled with CSC branding and baskets.

“It’s been great to see the bikes all over campus and around town, including places like Walmart and downtown businesses,” Miller said.

Miller said students should respect the bikes so they can be used for as long as possible and that students should bring the bikes back to campus instead of leaving them at their off-campus residences overnight or at other establishments.

“Unlike big city bike shares, we encourage all bikes to be placed back in the designated bike racks, rather than left anywhere on campus. Any damage to bikes can be considered damage to college property and subject to disciplinary action,” Miller said.

Armed Suspect Sought Following Vehicle Burglary

Alliance, Neb. – On Sunday, October 26, 2025, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Alliance Police Officers received a report of a white male suspect attempting to break into vehicles in the West 3rd Street area. The suspect gained entry into a vehicle in the 1400 block of West 3rd Street and stole two loaded Ruger handguns, a large sum of cash, and a brown purse.

It is unknown if the suspect entered any other vehicles, but witnesses observed him checking door handles on West 3rd Street and in the Meadows Trailer Court area.

Investigators have since obtained surveillance footage of the suspect from nearby businesses. If you recognize the individual, do not approach him. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Police Seek Public’s Assistance Identifying Auto Burglar

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;— Governor Jim Pillen released the following statement after Red Willow County District Judge Patrick Heng denied a request for a temporary injunction in a lawsuit aimed at preventing the State from converting the Work Ethic Camp (WEC) to an ICE detention facility.

“I appreciate that the court expedited this decision, which affirms the State’s right to enter into the contract with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and provides the authority to operate the detention facility under the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS),” said Gov. Pillen.

“The agreement we have with DHS is good for Nebraska’s taxpayers and it ensures we are doing all that we can to keep criminal, illegal aliens off our streets.”

Last week, the facility underwent a final walk-through by ICE inspectors and was approved for use. Rob Jeffreys, director of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS), praised the work of his team: 

“Passing these inspections is a testament to our team’s commitment to safety, security, and professionalism. I appreciate the attention to detail shown at every level of this facility and the strong partnerships and cooperation with DHS and ICE that have made this possible.”

The contract between the DHS/ICE and WEC will net the state around $14 million annually. Taking into consideration all costs associated with housing detainees, the state will receive approximately $2.4 million per month.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Gov. Pillen Provides Statement After Judge Denies Temporary Injunction for WEC

KEARNEY, Neb. – Ty Buescher isn’t waiting until college to tackle advanced science classes.

The Kearney High School senior is already earning those credits through the University of Nebraska at Kearney’s dual enrollment program, which allows students to take courses that count toward both their high school diploma and future degree.

“It’s definitely a challenge, but it’s a fun challenge,” said Buescher, who participates in football, wrestling, FFA and SkillsUSA at Kearney High. “After this semester, I’ll have two of my required chemistry classes done, so once I get to college I can focus on the next step. It will definitely help alleviate some stress knowing I took care of those classes in high school.”

By the time he graduates, Buescher will have several college credits in multiple subjects under his belt – saving both time and money as he prepares for a career in physical therapy.

UNK’s dual enrollment courses are offered at about one-third the cost of standard in-state tuition – just $75 per credit hour – and some school districts provide financial assistance for qualifying students. The Access College Early Scholarship, a state-funded program, also covers tuition and fees for low-income high school students who enroll in these college courses.

“Why not take advantage of it?” Buescher said. “The opportunity to complete classes for a cheaper price, with teachers and classmates I already know, makes it even better.”

UNK’s dual enrollment partnerships extend well beyond city limits. Nearly 500 students from 10 partner schools across Nebraska currently participate, taking advanced courses in history, biology, chemistry, Spanish, art, teacher education, English and math.

Allisha Melroy, who became UNK’s director of dual enrollment in July, calls the program a “win-win” for both students and schools.

“It gives students the ability to earn college credit in a really economical way but also in a comfortable space where they can have the guidance of their high school teacher,” said Melroy, who taught high school English, speech and journalism for 21 years before joining UNK. “They get an introduction to college and the rigor of this coursework in an environment they’re already familiar with.”

Beyond the immediate savings, Melroy sees long-term benefits for everyone involved. The experience helps high schoolers adjust to college-level expectations while also strengthening relationships between UNK departments and area educators.

“It’s good for kids first and foremost, but it’s also good for colleges to make those connections with teachers,” she said. “It’s a bridge that helps students transition more smoothly into higher education.”

At Kearney High School, science teacher Alison Klein has seen firsthand how dual enrollment courses prepare students for what’s next. She’s taught UNK-affiliated chemistry classes for seven years, working closely with university faculty to ensure her curriculum mirrors college-level coursework.

Klein “strongly encourages” students to consider these advanced placement classes, especially if they’re interested in STEM or health care careers, so they can “hit the ground running” in college.

“High school is about training for the marathon of life, and your senior year is not a time to let up on training,” she said. “Being exposed to coursework at the collegiate level is only going to give them evidence that they’re ready for college. No matter what field they’re interested in, I want them to be successful when they step on campus.”

Kearney High currently offers a total of 10 dual enrollment courses through its partnership with UNK, covering topics such as art foundations, academic writing and research, world history, American history and Spanish.

Klein teaches two sections of AP chemistry for seniors. She says UNK’s support makes the experience rewarding for educators, too. Dual enrollment instructors receive access to the university’s Center for Teaching and Learning and professional development opportunities, along with compensation based on student enrollment.

“I’m really grateful that we have this partnership with UNK,” Klein said. “They’ve been so supportive, and it’s really awesome that we have this opportunity for students to get a feel for college-level coursework.”

Nearly four months into her new position, Melroy is focused on growing the dual enrollment program, with plans to expand offerings and add new subjects such as criminal justice and cybersecurity.

Her goal is to increase participation by adding new schools to the program and helping current partners certify more instructors to teach dual enrollment courses. Typically, dual enrollment teachers must have a master’s degree in their subject area or at least 18 graduate-level credit hours in the content area.

By encouraging more teachers to earn these credentials, Melroy hopes to open new opportunities for students who may not currently have access to college-level classes in their high schools.

“The more certified teachers we have, the more courses we can offer,” Melroy said. “That means more students can take advantage of these opportunities without leaving their communities.”

Melroy also sees this expansion as a way to strengthen UNK’s recruitment pipeline. She’s working closely with the university’s admissions team and department chairs to turn dual enrollment participation into full-time enrollment down the road.

“It’s given us the ability to create these pathways – whether it’s teacher education, math or another field – where students can identify an interest and connect with UNK early on,” she said. “My hope is that as we see the student numbers increase and the number of schools increase, we will also see those pathways to UNK increase.”

Ultimately, her mission is to make dual enrollment accessible and impactful for both students and teachers.

“It’s a great way for educators to earn extra money and for schools to reward those teachers who are doing a great job in their classrooms,” Melroy said. “They get to focus on what they love most – teaching their content – while helping students take that next step toward college.”

For students like Buescher, that head start means stepping onto campus with confidence – possibly in his hometown.

“UNK is definitely one of my top choices,” he said. “I’ll already know what college-level classes are like, and I’ll be ready for whatever comes next.”

 </figure>KEARNEY, Neb. – Ty Buescher isn’t waiting until college to tackle advanced science classes.The Kearney High School senior is already earning those credits through the University of Nebraska at Kearney’s dual enrollment program, which allows students to take courses that count toward both their high school diploma and future degree.“It’s definitely a challenge, but it’s a fun challenge,” said Buescher, who participates in football, wrestling, FFA and SkillsUSA at Kearney High. “After this semester, I’ll have two of my required chemistry classes done, so once I get to college I can focus on the next step. It will definitely help alleviate some stress knowing I took care of those classes in high school.”By the time he graduates, Buescher will have several college credits in multiple subjects under his belt – saving both time and money as he prepares for a career in physical therapy.UNK’s dual enrollment courses are offered at about one-third the cost of standard in-state tuition – just $75 per credit hour – and some school districts provide financial assistance for qualifying students. The Access College Early Scholarship, a state-funded program, also covers tuition and fees for low-income high school students who enroll in these college courses.“Why not take advantage of it?” Buescher said. “The opportunity to complete classes for a cheaper price, with teachers and classmates I already know, makes it even better.”Pathway to college success<figure>

Nearly 500 students from 10 partner schools across Nebraska currently participate, taking advanced courses in history, biology, chemistry, Spanish, art, teacher education, English and math.Allisha Melroy, who became UNK’s director of dual enrollment in July, calls the program a “win-win” for both students and schools.“It gives students the ability to earn college credit in a really economical way but also in a comfortable space where they can have the guidance of their high school teacher,” said Melroy, who taught high school English, speech and journalism for 21 years before joining UNK. “They get an introduction to college and the rigor of this coursework in an environment they’re already familiar with.”Beyond the immediate savings, Melroy sees long-term benefits for everyone involved. UNK’s Dual Enrollment Program Gives High Schoolers a Head Start

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.&nbsp; — Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol conducted alcohol compliance checks this month in Lincoln County and Dawson County.

Investigators conducted the checks during the evening hours of Thursday, Oct. 2, and Wednesday, Oct. 22. In total, 20 businesses were checked. Of those businesses, 17 refused to sell alcohol to a minor for a compliance rate of 85 percent. One business failed to check the minor’s ID.

The businesses included convenience stores, restaurants, bars and liquor stores. Businesses that sell alcohol to a minor are referred to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. Clerks who sell alcohol to a minor are cited for procuring alcohol for a minor.

These projects were funded (100 percent, $427,899.00) by the Region II Human Services Substance Abuse Prevention, Treatment and Recovery Services Block Grant (1B08TI088119-01) through SAMHSA, contracted through the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Behavioral Health.&nbsp;

ALLIANCE, Neb. – On Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025, at approximately 5:30 p.m., the Alliance Police Department was alerted to a disturbing video circulating on social media depicting a male juvenile brandishing a handgun and making threats toward another juvenile. The video appeared to have been recorded in Central Park.

Officers had been in the area of the park shortly before the report and observed a group of juveniles congregating, though no criminal behavior was noted at that time. Upon review of the video, Sergeant LaDuke was able to identify the suspect involved. Officers promptly returned to the park, where the juveniles were detained. A search of the individuals led to the recovery of a 9mm handgun, one loaded magazine, and one unloaded magazine, found in possession of three separate juveniles.

The juvenile who originally posted the video was found with a single bullet in his possession. During questioning, he admitted to transferring the firearm and magazines to others in an attempt to avoid detection. He also confessed to recording and posting the video to Snapchat and to having stolen the firearm from his uncle.

The juvenile was transported to a juvenile detention facility and is facing the following charges:

Juvenile crime continues to be an escalating concern nationwide. The Alliance Police Department urges all parents and guardians to remain vigilant—know where your children are, who they are associating with and what they are doing both in person and online.

Chief Leavitt strongly reminds all firearm owners to secure every weapon at all times. Firearms that are left accessible to minors pose a serious threat to public safety. Adults who fail to properly secure their firearms may face criminal charges if those weapons are used in the commission of a crime or result in injury or death.

APD Arrests Juvenile for Handgun Possession

OMAHA, Neb.&nbsp; &nbsp;—&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) have arrested two people following a pursuit in eastern Nebraska Thursday evening.

At approximately 7:06 p.m. Thursday, troopers were notified of a 2021 blue Kia Forte traveling westbound on Interstate 80 near mile marker 433 with stolen Illinois license plates. The Omaha Police Department’s Able-1 assisted troopers in locating the vehicle at a rest stop near mile marker 432. As the trooper attempted to contact the vehicle’s occupants, the vehicle fled westbound on Interstate 80. The Omaha Police Department’s Able-1 took over the pursuit from the air, and the trooper on the ground discontinued.

Pilots tracked the fleeing vehicle as it exited the interstate onto 238th Street, traveling southbound before re-entering the interstate near mile marker 420, traveling eastbound. The vehicle exited onto Highway 370 and turned northbound onto 144th Street. The pilots observed the vehicle re-enter Interstate 80 westbound. As the vehicle reached mile marker 410, another trooper was able to successfully deploy stop sticks on the vehicle. The Kia came to a stop near 120th and Highway 6.

During the pursuit, the vehicle reached speeds as high as 125 miles per hour.

Both subjects attempted to flee on foot and hide in a nearby field. Utilizing both Able-1 and the NSP AirWing, troopers were able to locate both individuals and take them into custody without further incident.

The driver, Courtney Fletz, 30-years-old, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest and theft. She was lodged in Sarpy County Corrections. The passenger, Dylan Pinkston, 31-years-old, was arrested for obstructing a peace officer. He was lodged in Lancaster County Correctional Facility.

At approximately 7:45 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, 2025, a trooper observed a red Chevrolet Trailblazer traveling eastbound on Interstate 80 fail to maintain its lane near mile marker 134. During the stop, the trooper observed a THC vape pen in plain view.

Troopers searched the vehicle and located a vacuum sealed bag containing 1 pound of suspected methamphetamine wrapped in cellophane. Troopers also located a small amount of suspected cocaine, drug paraphernalia and a TCH pen.
