Patriot Day: The Quiet Ways We Remember

Secretary of State Bob Evnen returned today from a one-week trade and investment mission to Kenya.

“Kenya has one of the strongest economies in East Africa and is a trade gateway into the region. This trade mission continued to grow and solidify Nebraska’s trade relationship with Kenya,” Evnen said.

The primary focus of the trade mission was the promotion of Nebraska corn growers, Nebraska producers of ethanol and dried distillers grains, and Nebraska irrigation technology companies. Representatives from each of these areas participated in the trade mission, in addition to animal nutrition experts from the University of Nebraska.

“Our meeting with Kenya President William Ruto was very productive and encouraging,” Evnen said. “Nebraska businesses are already present in the region and are ready to expand their presence.”

The trade delegation also met with the governors of two Kenya counties with robust agricultural sectors who are interested in trade deals with Nebraska businesses.

Among the delegates who participated in the trade and investment mission was Jay Reiners, former chair of the Nebraska Corn Board and current vice chairman of the U.S. Grains and BioProducts Council. “I have participated in many trade missions promoting Nebraska corn. None of them were more effective than the trade mission to Kenya just completed by the Nebraska Secretary of State,” Reiners said about the experience.

The Nebraska Secretary of State conducts trade missions as part of the Secretary’s statutory responsibility to promote international trade, education and culture on behalf of Nebraska.

Finalists Named in Peru State Presidential Search

Three individuals&nbsp;honored for conservation work

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;– During Husker Harvest Days this morning, Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts (NRDs) recognized three individuals, who will be inducted into the NRD Hall of Fame later this month.

“Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts involve many dedicated individuals working to protect our natural resources,” said Martin Graff, president of the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts (NARD). “We’re proud to recognize these outstanding individuals for the significant improvements they’ve made to our natural resources, and the NRD Hall of Fame is one small way to thank them.”

Annually, Nebraska’s NRDs nominate and vote for individuals who have made significant contributions to improving the state’s natural resources. Hall of Fame categories include an NRD Director, NRD Employee and NRD Supporter. The NRD Supporter includes an individual outside the NRD system who has shown tremendous care and leadership in Nebraska’s ongoing conservation efforts.

<a>James Meismer served 34 years on the Twin Platte NRD Board. His impact extends statewide through his 28 years on the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts Board, where he chaired the Legislative Committee.</a>

A strong advocate for sound water policy, Meismer served on the Water Policy Task Force, whose work helped establish integrated management of groundwater and surface water in Nebraska. He also contributed to conservation at the federal level as an advisor to the Platte River Whooping Crane Maintenance Trust now the Crane Trust.

A respected farmer, rancher, and veterinarian, Meismer is known for his commitment to protecting Nebraska’s natural resources.

<a>With 33 years of service, John Miyoshi is recognized for his leadership and dedication to conservation. As the Lower Platte North NRD general manager, Miyoshi oversaw multi-million-dollar budgets and led major projects in soil conservation, water quality and quantity, and flood control. He was instrumental in securing federal funding for the Upper Wahoo Creek Watershed flood reduction dams, that began construction this year.</a>

Miyoshi championed innovation, especially in GIS and data management, helping NRD and NRCS staff work more efficiently. He played a key role in projects like the Sand Creek Environmental Restoration Project (Lake Wanahoo), the Western Sarpy/Clear Creek Levee Project, and rural water systems for Bruno and Colon, Nebraska.

Known for building strong partnerships across all levels of government, Miyoshi brought people together around shared goals—even on controversial efforts. His legacy includes the establishment of the Lower Platte North NRD’s Ground Water Quality and Quantity Management Area, reflecting his commitment to protecting Nebraska’s resources.

Martha “Marty” Link – NRD Supporter

With a 32-year career at the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, Marty Link is known for leadership, technical expertise, and enduring partnership with Nebraska’s NRDs. A professional geologist and Buffalo County native, Link played a pivotal role in groundwater protection, beginning with the Groundwater Management Area Program and later supervising the groundwater, wellhead protection, and nonpoint source programs.

Link championed collaboration with NRDs, mentored staff, and helped shape local groundwater management plans. Hall of Fame categories include an NRD Director, NRD Employee and NRD Supporter. He also contributed to conservation at the federal level as an advisor to the Platte River Whooping Crane Maintenance Trust now the Crane Trust.A respected farmer, rancher, and veterinarian, Meismer is known for his commitment to protecting Nebraska’s natural resources.John Miyoshi – NRD Employee<a>With 33 years of service, John Miyoshi is recognized for his leadership and dedication to conservation. As the Lower Platte North NRD general manager, Miyoshi oversaw multi-million-dollar budgets and led major projects in soil conservation, water quality and quantity, and flood control. He was instrumental in securing federal funding for the Upper Wahoo Creek Watershed flood reduction dams, that began construction this year.</a>Miyoshi championed innovation, especially in GIS and data management, helping NRD and NRCS staff work more efficiently. He played a key role in projects like the Sand Creek Environmental Restoration Project (Lake Wanahoo), the Western Sarpy/Clear Creek Levee Project, and rural water systems for Bruno and Colon, Nebraska.Known for building strong partnerships across all levels of government, Miyoshi brought people together around shared goals—even on controversial efforts. His legacy includes the establishment of the Lower Platte North NRD’s Ground Water Quality and Quantity Management Area, reflecting his commitment to protecting Nebraska’s resources.Martha “Marty” Link – NRD SupporterWith a 32-year career at the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy, Marty Link is known for leadership, technical expertise, and enduring partnership with Nebraska’s NRDs. NRD Hall of Fame Inductees Announced at Husker Harvest Days

CHADRON, Neb. – A total of 169 Chadron State College employees participated in the inaugural Eagle Success Summit hosted on campus Aug. 29, according to committee co-chair and Director of the Office of Academic Success Chantel Merchen.

Merchen said the idea for the summit originated after she learned of a similar program at another college. When Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Kimberly Paddock-O’Reilly asked Merchen and Dean of Professional Studies and Applied Sciences Dr. Brittany Helmbrecht to co-chair a task force to improve communication and build relationships, the group saw the summit as an opportunity to try something new.

“As many know, you do not create sustainable change by doing what you have always done,” Merchen said. “You need to step out of your comfort zone, try something new, and get a team of amazing people around you, which is just what our committee did.”

The summit also served as Merchen’s capstone project for the Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) through the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). She said her ELP cohort offered support throughout the planning process.

“We look forward to continuing this effort on campus, and we are still celebrating what a fun and engaging event we had,” Merchen said.

Survey results showed that 89 percent of participants were satisfied with the conference, and 84.6 percent said they were likely to attend again in the future. Additionally, the feedback provided suggestions for future improvements.

“CSC is committed to providing professional development relevant to the goals of the institution to our faculty and staff,” Paddock-O’Reilly said. “The feedback received will be used to help guide the planning process for next year.” Attendees praised the summit’s opportunities for networking and collaboration, as well as the quality of the keynote speakers.

A survey respondent noted the keynote speakers were knowledgeable and engaging, and that each session offered valuable learning. They also remarked that&nbsp;the event felt carefully planned and executed.

Keynote speaker Dr. Laurie Schreiner said she was impressed by the event’s energy and focus.

“It’s unusual for an institution to have everyone at an event like this focused on student success—so kudos for centering on the student experience,” Schreiner said. “The level of energy and engagement in the room, along with the clear commitment to students, was impressive.”

She also commended the collaborative planning behind the summit.

“Collaborative engagement is the hallmark of a thriving campus, and I witnessed a high level of it firsthand,” Schreiner said. “Congratulations on involving so many people and providing a rich experience that was accessible to all.”

In addition to Merchen and Helmbrecht, committee members included Daniel Binkard, Dr. Lorie Hunn, Kayla Junge, Dr. Mary Keithly, Amanda Medaries, Stacie Mittleider, Taylor Osmotherly, Chris Singpiel, and Kaylee Summers.

Eagle Success Summit Highlights Collaboration

CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State College will celebrate Homecoming Sept. 20-27 with a variety of events centered around the theme Once Upon a Homecoming.

The week of activities for CSC students, alumni, employees, and community members begins Saturday, Sept. 20, with a public Color Run starting at the Chicoine Center. Registration opens at 9 a.m., followed by the race at 10 a.m. Students can participate for free with advanced&nbsp;<a href="https://forms.office.com/r/bv6ctFdnne" target="_blank">registration</a>, while community members of all ages are invited to join by contributing basic hygiene items or shelf-stable food for the DOVES Program. Runners and walkers have the choice of a one-mile loop or a 5K course.

Race organizers will toss environmentally friendly colored chalk powder on the runners. The colors of teal, purple, and green represent Suicide Prevention Awareness, Domestic Violence Awareness, and Mental Health Awareness, respectively. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness about important topics in an engaging way that fosters positive and productive conversations.

On Sunday, Sept. 21, the Night of Country Swing club will host its traditional Homecoming dance and bonfire from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Backyard area south of High Rise. The Chadron Volunteer Fire Department will be present, and s’mores supplies will be provided.

Monday, Sept. 22, will feature a sheet decorating competition for student clubs and organizations beginning at 5 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom and Scottsbluff Room. Each club will design a sheet to display on its Homecoming parade float on Saturday.

The schedule continues on Tuesday, Sept. 23, with two student events. A pickleball tournament will be at 5 p.m. at the tennis courts north of High Rise. Later, from 8 to 11 p.m., the Campus Activities Board will sponsor free student bowling and pizza at Hilltop Lanes on West 10th Street.

On Wednesday, Sept. 24, students are invited to a Late Night at the Pit event, the Silent Disco. From 7 to 10 p.m. in The Hub, participants will wear wireless headphones, enjoy food, and dance.

Homecoming traditions continue Thursday, Sept. 25, with the coronation of CSC’s Homecoming royalty from 6:30 to 7 p.m. at Elliott Field. Immediately afterward, students and employees will gather for the Lighting of C-Hill, a long-standing tradition that includes photos, T-shirts, and hot cocoa.

Friday, Sept. 26, offers a mix of alumni, community, and student activities. All students are invited to participate in making a mural at the south entrance of the Student Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Alumni are invited to a campus tour beginning at 1 p.m. at the Lindeken Clock Tower. Later in the afternoon, the COIL building will host an open house from 4 to 6 p.m., showcasing the Geoscience Museum, Herbarium, and Entomology collections under the theme Bugs, Plants, and Dinosaurs…Oh My! From 6:30 to 10 p.m., COIL guests can enjoy homemade ice cream before a planetarium presentation and film screening.

Athletics will take center stage as volleyball hosts Fort Lewis at 6 p.m. in the Chicoine Center. Homecoming royalty will be introduced during the game. The Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet will be at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom, with tickets for adults at $25 and $15 for attendees 18 and under.

Homecoming week will culminate Saturday, Sept. 27, with the annual Homecoming Parade at 9:30 a.m. starting at 10th and Main Street, proceeding north to First Street. Immediately after the parade, a student tailgate will take place in the parking lot south of Elliott Field, and the Alumni and Foundation Tailgate will be at 11 a.m. on Chicoine Plaza. The football team will host Colorado Mesa at 1 p.m.

Later Saturday evening, Slim Days will take place outside Wild’s and the Bean Broker. The gate opens at 4:30 p.m. and the first band will play at 5:30. Volleyball will wrap up the week by hosting Western Colorado at 7 p.m. in the Chicoine Center.

Updates on Seal Work for Asphalt Streets in Chadron

ALLIANCE, Neb. – Join us at the Alliance Public Library on Sept. 25 at 5:30 p.m. for an evening of fascinating facts and interesting stories of a five-generation owned and operated Sandhills ranch. Jaclyn Wilson of the Flying Diamond Ranch will be discussing their Lakeside Nebraska cattle ranch established in 1888 by her great-grandfather.

Jaclyn and her father currently run the day-to-day operations. The Wilsons were the recipients of the National Beef Quality Assurance Award in 2023. Awarded for their efforts as beef producers, marketers and educators who promote beef quality assurance in commercial cow-calf production, they continue to seek ways to implement new and innovative livestock management methods and practices. Throughout the process of their direct-to-consumer beef commercial cow calf operation they maintain the interest and well-being of both cattle and the ranch land.

The Wilson ranch has also received prestigious recognition from the Leopold Foundation. In 2006, they were the first outfit to be recognized by the annual Leopold Conservation Award honoring farmers, ranchers and forestland owners who go above and beyond in their management of soil health, water resources and wildlife habitat on working land.

The APL community program will be in the community room from 5:30-6:30 p.m., with a half hour designated for discussion and questions. Light refreshments will be provided, and a winner will be drawn for a door prize courtesy of Flying Diamond Ranch. The season begins Wednesday from 2 to 5 p.m. in Memorial Hall with All-State Chorus Audition Preparation Day intended for high school students who wish to be selected to sing in the All-State Chorus.

Guest Artist Alex Annan will perform with the CSC Faculty Jazz Combo in Memorial Hall on Monday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m.

Tenor/Bass Day will take place on Oct. 8 from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Memorial Hall. A final concert for the workshop participants will be at 2:30 p.m. in the Chicoine Atrium of the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center.

The Concert Choir and Community Choir will perform Nov. 2 at 3 p.m. at the Chadron Arts Center. The Wind Symphony and Community Band will present a concert Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Hall Auditorium. The CSC Jazz Band and Jazz Combo will perform Nov. 10 at 7 p.m., followed by a Vocal Jazz and Faculty Jazz concert Nov. 18 at 7 p.m., both in Memorial Hall Auditorium.

Deadlines Approaching for 2025 Pumpkin Run in Lincoln

LINCOLN, Neb. –&nbsp;On Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2025, Governor Jim Pillen wrapped up a highly productive trade mission to Japan. The mission included meetings with key importers of Nebraska beef and pork; opportunities to promote Nebraska-made biofuels; and high-level discussions to strengthen the state’s longstanding commercial, cultural and educational ties to Japan.

“Japan is a top customer of Nebraska’s value-added agricultural products, and there is tremendous potential for our trade relationship to grow,” said Gov. Pillen.

“In particular, there are gigantic opportunities for our state to meet Japan’s increasing demand for ethanol and sustainable aviation fuel. With the ability to produce the lowest-carbon corn ethanol on the planet, Nebraska is well-positioned to expand its presence in the Japanese market.”

On Monday afternoon, Gov. Pillen highlighted Nebraska’s advantages as a biofuels supplier during remarks to a gathering of ethanol buyers in Tokyo. The event was organized by the U.S. Embassy in Japan and the U.S. Grains Council. Now is an especially strategic time to promote Nebraska ethanol to Japan. In November 2024, the Government of Japan announced its intent to introduce higher ethanol blends into its fuel supply — with a target of having 10 percent ethanol in gasoline supplies by 2030 and 20 percent ethanol by 2040.

This policy would significantly increase the country’s ethanol use, as Japan blended less than two percent of ethanol with gasoline in 2024 — one of the lowest percentages in the developed world. George Glass, U.S. Ambassador to Japan, also spoke at the ethanol buyers event. He emphasized the Midwest’s robust capacity to support clean energy development in Japan. The Nebraska Corn Board and Union Pacific also presented at the conference. Respectively, they underscored Nebraska’s sustainable agricultural practices and the state’s strategic location at the heart of the nation’s coast-to-coast transportation network.

Earlier on Monday, Governor Pillen touted Nebraska’s strengths in agriculture and manufacturing during a speech at the Midwest-Japan Association conference. The annual event, which alternates between being held in the U.S. and in Japan, provided a platform for the state to showcase the benefits it can offer Japanese customers and investors.

On Tuesday, the final day of the trade mission, the state’s delegation met with leaders from Kawasaki to thank them for investing in Nebraska. Kawasaki has operated a major manufacturing facility in Lincoln since 1974. It produces all-terrain vehicles, utility vehicles, recreation utility vehicles, personal watercrafts (such as Jet Skis), and passenger railcars. The company’s footprint in Lincoln has grown to nearly 1.3 million square feet of manufacturing, office, and warehouse space. In 2018, Kawasaki landed a $1.4 billion contract to build 535 next-generation subway cars for the New York City’s Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA). Since then, MTA has upped its order multiple times (most recently in February 2025), increasing the value of the contract to $4.5 billion for 1,610 railcars.

Japan has the world’s fourth largest economy. According to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, Nebraska’s exports to Japan totaled $699 million in 2024. Nebraska opened its first international office in Japan in 2006 (Nebraska Center Japan). It serves as the main point of contact for Japanese companies looking for business opportunities in Nebraska.

ALLIANCE, Neb.&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol is seeking help from the public to locate a missing person in western Nebraska. Ebram Anthony Sifuentes is the subject of a missing person investigation.

Mr. Sifuentes is&nbsp;a&nbsp;32-year-old Hispanic male, 5-foot-11, 180&nbsp;pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He has&nbsp;a tattoo of a black spider on his right calf. Sifuentes was last seen in Alliance, NE on Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2025, at approximately 6:30&nbsp;p.m.

NSP Seeks Public Help in Missing Person Investigation

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has sent out its seventh and last regular scheduled issuance of Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) benefits starting today, Sept. 9, 2025.

Throughout the 2025 Summer EBT period, households with eligible school-age children were able to receive assistance in buying groceries with the program’s second year of operation. A one-time payment of $120 was issued for each eligible child, intended to cover the three summer months at $40/month.

The last regular scheduled issuance was sent to eligible students as reported by school districts and any new eligibility determinations through public assistance benefits and Summer EBT applications.

Summer EBT cards were mailed to eligible families using their registered address with DHHS or their child’s school. Once families receive the Summer EBT card, it must be activated using the instructions mailed with the card.

Eligible families will have 122 days, or four months, to use Summer EBT benefits. The 122-day count begins the day after benefits are issued. If benefits are not used within 122 days, funds will be returned to the federal government and cannot be reissued.

Alliance Arts Council Receives Grant from Nebraska Arts Council

A 16-year-old male from Chadron was injured in a dove hunting incident at about 6:45 p.m. MT on Sept. 6 on private property southwest of Chadron in rural Dawes County.

The teenager was taken by his hunting party to Chadron Community Hospital with birdshot wounds to his face, torso, arm and hand. He was treated and released.

An initial review of the incident indicates he was unintentionally shot at close range by another member of his hunting party.

This is the second hunting incident reported in 2025.

Since the introduction of mandatory hunter education and hunter orange requirements in Nebraska in 1972, annual hunting incidents have decreased by over 70 percent.

Hunters are reminded to know their safe zone-of-fire and follow the four primary rules of firearm safety to greatly reduce the risk of causing a hunting incident:

OMAHA, Neb. — A recent study of more than 1,000 people in alcohol treatment found that nearly one in three never escape the crushing anxiety or depression that often accompanies early sobriety — a red flag that may predict relapse and signal the need for more targeted care.

Published in “Alcohol: Clinical and Experimental Research” this spring, the study tracked weekly anxiety and depression symptoms during the first six weeks of treatment. While most patients saw symptoms ease quickly, researchers identified three distinct recovery paths:

The sustained group was more likely to have severe PTSD symptoms and other mental health diagnoses. Women were more likely than men to fall into the high-symptom depression group, highlighting a possible sex-specific risk.

“Early abstinence is a make-or-break period,” said lead author Jennifer Blackford, PhD, of the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Munroe-Meyer Institute. “If anxiety or depression doesn’t improve quickly, relapse risk may be much higher. The good news is, we can identify these patterns in the first few weeks and act before it’s too late.”

Alcohol use disorder affects millions of Americans and contributes to more than 140,000 deaths each year. Despite the availability of treatment, over half of patients relapse within a year. By recognizing sustained emotional distress early, clinicians may be able to tailor care — such as adding anxiety-focused psychotherapy or medication — to improve outcomes.

The researchers note that their findings come from de-identified patient data from a large community-based treatment program, making the results directly relevant to real-world clinical settings. They call for future studies to examine relapse rates in each subgroup and the impact of specific interventions.

This work was supported by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
