KEARNEY, Neb. - CHI Health Good Samaritan Foundation has received its largest single gift to date, $12.6 million, dedicated to advancing women's health in the region. A private foundation recently contributed to the expansion and renovation of the hospital's Maternity Center and Interventional Cardiology Suites.

Cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in women including during pregnancy and postpartum, often goes underdiagnosed and undertreated. Women experience atypical symptoms and differences in disease presentation requiring precise, real-time diagnosis and intervention, which only a fully-equipped cardiac cath lab can provide.

“Our generous donor, in keeping with our own mission, believes in the important role women's health plays in healthy families and communities,” says Cindi Richter, director, Good Samaritan Foundation. “This incredible gift will ensure the best care for new mothers in our community and the unique heart care needs of all the women in our lives.”

Starting in spring 2026, a construction project will completely renovate the hospital's Maternity Center. The redesigned space will include 11 large birthing suites with partner sleeping areas and a whirlpool bath, as well as additional visitor amenities like a comfortable family waiting area and refreshment center. Also included is a new private entrance and state-of-the-art surgical suite. The hospital’s current Maternity Center will remain open and fully-functional during the expansion.

“Families will fall in love with the new look and coziness of our larger space. We’ll have everything for an ideal birth experience,” says Anne Kraus, director, Maternity Center. “This, combined with our expert staff and the region’s only Advanced Level II NICU, is everything you’ve come to expect from the community's trusted health partner.”

The hospital's interventional cardiology suites are scheduled for a phased renovation. The initial update,&nbsp;which involves installing the latest imaging and guidance equipment, will be completed in spring 2026.&nbsp;Updates to the cardiac cath lab are an important part of the women’s health project, and will contribute to the comprehensive cardiac care program at Good Samaritan that also includes non-invasive cardiology, vascular surgery, cardiothoracic surgery and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation.&nbsp;

In accordance with the donor’s wishes, the new Maternity Center will be named after retired physician, Dr. Dennis L. Edwards. As one of the pioneering pediatricians in the region, Dr. Edwards is recognized for accompanying an ill infant on the inaugural flight of Good Samaritan’s medical helicopter service–AirCare. He later served as an anesthesiologist, respected physician leader and vice president of medical operations at Good Samaritan.&nbsp;

The donor also requested that the Interventional Cardiology Suites be named for Dr. Daniel J. McGowan. Dr. McGowan is a board-certified interventional cardiologist at CHI Health Clinic Heart Institute, and has served the community for more than 25 years.

New plan pays down $5.1 million in debt, saving WNCC more than $700,000 annually

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. — The Western Community College Area Board of Governors has approved a budget for the 2025-2026 fiscal year that will reduce ongoing expenses, significantly lowers debt, lowers the levy and positions Western Nebraska Community College for long-term financial stability.

The general operating budget for WNCC was approved, at $33,819,188, up from $30,737,562 in 2024-25. The increase, however, is fully attributed to the use of cash reserves to pay down debt. That $3.3 million debt payment will save WNCC $730,000 annually and will reduce the institution’s total debt to roughly $2.5 million.

“By reducing debt now and operating with greater efficiency, we are making smart financial decisions that benefit both the College and the taxpayers we serve,” said Board Chair John Stinner. “This budget ensures long-term financial strength for WNCC."

The budget also reflects a 2.35 percent reduction in operating expenses compared to last year. Revenues from state funding and tuition and fees are up modestly (0.64 percent).

With Nebraska’s new funding model for community colleges, WNCC’s property tax levy has been reduced again to 2.1007 cents per $100 of assessed valuations, a decrease of .54 percent from the past year.

“I’m extremely proud of the work that went into this budget,” said WNCC President Greg Dart. “It’s forward-thinking, fiscally conservative, and something we can all be proud of as we look to the future of WNCC.”

WNCC’s grand total of all budgets (operating, building improvement, and self-supporting) stands at $61.7 million, a 5.51 percent decrease from last year's budget.

WCCA Board Passes 2025–2026 Budget Focused on Savings and Stability

At approximately 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16th, Alliance High School was placed on hold following reports that juveniles were driving past the school and displaying weapons from their vehicle. One report indicated a gun had been pointed at students.

School Resource Officer (SRO) Sherlock and officers from the Alliance Police Department immediately responded. Within minutes, SRO Sherlock located the suspect vehicle, a black Chevy S-10 pickup, near 10th Street and Niobrara Avenue and initiated a traffic stop.

A search of the vehicle revealed two Orbeez toy guns. Officers also identified the juveniles responsible for pointing a gun from the vehicle. One of them was additionally found in possession of brass knuckles. Both juveniles, who were already on probation for prior offenses, were taken into custody and transported to a juvenile detention facility.

Charges include Terroristic Threats and Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Prohibited Person.

The hold was lifted shortly after the suspects were detained. At no time were students or staff physically harmed during the incident.

The Alliance Police Department commends school staff for their swift action in securing the campus and thanks the community for promptly reporting suspicious activity. While the guns involved were toys, they closely resemble real firearms and are capable of causing serious injury. Ensuring the safety of students, staff, and the community remains our top priority.

Alliance High School "Hold" Quickly Resolved After Juveniles Display Weapons

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.&nbsp; &nbsp;—&nbsp;&nbsp;Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) Carrier Enforcement Division conducted local commercial vehicle inspections on Tuesday, Sept. 16, in Lincoln County.

During this effort, the Metropolitan Aggressive and Prevention Selective (MAPS) Team conducted 20 vehicle inspections. Troopers discovered 31 violations of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and state law. Troopers placed 3 vehicles out of service (not allowed to return to the road).

Vehicles are placed out of service for a variety of reasons relating to bad brakes or tires, or other problems that pose immediate safety risks. Troopers issued a total of 6 citations during the inspections.

During the inspections, troopers also issued a total of 4 CVSA decals. The decals indicate that the vehicle did not have any immediate safety issues.

The effort focuses on commercial vehicles that may not pass-through weigh stations as part of their regular routes.

The MAPS Team is funded largely by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Troopers check for compliance with federal safety regulations and enforce laws pertaining to weight, size, registration, dyed fuels and permits associated with commercial vehicles. The MAPS Team was implemented in 1998 and consists of troopers from the Nebraska State Patrol Carrier Enforcement Division.

An Agriculture Land Lease Workshop will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to Noon, in the Bordeaux Room at Chadron State College Student Center. The workshop will review the latest trends in cash rental rates, lease provisions, and crop-share lease considerations.

The session aims to equip both landlords and tenants with up-to-date management strategies for agricultural land leases. Participants will gain insights from Nebraska Extension Educators Jessica Groskopf and Brock Ortner, who will present findings from the 2025 Nebraska Farm Real Estate Survey. Additionally, they will cover common lease provisions for agricultural land and share effective tips for enhancing landlord-tenant communications.

Nationwide, a person or vehicle is hit by a train every three hours. Last year, 1,024 people in the U.S. were killed or injured in vehicle-train collisions, with 18 incidents in Nebraska. Another 1,438 people were killed or injured while walking on or near railroad tracks, with seven incidents in Nebraska.

September 16, 2025—Millions of people rely on portable generators as sources of secondary power when natural disasters cut off the electrical supply from the power grid. The Portable Generators Manufacturers’ Association (PGMA) is dedicated to the safe, proper use of portable generators and warns against a practice known as backfeeding. It is the dangerous activity of plugging a generator into a home’s wall outlet.

Some people are under the mistaken impression that backfeeding will enable them to power their entire home with a generator or power certain appliances without running extension cords from the appliance to the generator. In actuality, backfeeding is extremely dangerous and presents an electrocution risk to utility workers and neighbors served by the same utility transformer. It also bypasses some of the built-in household circuit protection devices.

Backfeeding can cause short circuits and overloads that lead to electrical fires, prompt fluctuating or excessive voltage that can damage appliances and electronics, and damage a home’s wiring and circuit breaker panel.

Homeowners can have their circuit breakers professionally modified with installation of a transfer switch or interlock device to enable safely switching a home’s power source between the utility grid and a backup generator during a power outage. A transfer switch serves as a connection point that prevents a generator from feeding electricity back into the power lines. Interlock devices, when installed by a qualified electrician, enable homeowners to safely connect their portable generators to their home’s electrical panel while ensuring the main breaker is disengaged. These are the only safe ways to use a portable generator to power an entire residence.

Most emergencies can be handled by simply using proper-length, appropriately rated extension cords running from critical appliances, such as refrigerators and communication devices, to the portable generator. Homeowners are cautioned to use only 30-amp and 50-amp power cords for these purposes, as it can help prevent overheating and electrical hazards when directly powering appliances.

Due to an increase in casino gambling revenue and unused money remaining in the Property Tax Credit Cash Fund and the School District Property Tax Credit Fund, these funds grew by more than the amount originally appropriated by the Nebraska Legislature. Executive Order 25-13 directs Nebraska’s Property Tax Administrator to certify and distribute the full amount in the funds to taxpayers, which will result in an additional $20 million in property tax relief.

“As Governor, fixing our broken property tax system is my top priority,” said Gov. Pillen. “Whenever possible, we must get bureaucracy out of the way and ensure that Nebraskans receive the full amount of property tax relief possible. By signing this executive order, we are ensuring that all money in these funds is fully given to taxpayers. This is a common-sense, good government measure that will help Nebraska families across the state,” said Gov. Pillen.

This executive order follows a number of initiatives led by Gov. Pillen to reduce property taxes, which has resulted in:

Scheduled Power Outage at KCOW Apartment Complex

ALLIANCE, Neb.&nbsp; — Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol believe that the deceased person found last week in rural Box Butte County is Ebram Sifuentes, 32-years-old. An autopsy was conducted on Monday, but additional testing is being done to provide 100 percent confirmation.

Sifuentes had been reported missing and was the subject of a missing person investigation. He had reportedly last been seen on August 27. Investigators believe Sifuentes was the victim of a homicide.

Last week, NSP arrested Tamara Bingham, 26-years-old, of Alliance, for first degree murder. Investigators also arrested Matthew Landreth, 36-years-old, of Alliance, as an accessory to a felony.

This is an active investigation and remains ongoing.

NSP has been assisted by the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office, Alliance Police Department, Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office, WING Task Force, the Sheridan and Box Butte County Attorneys, and the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office.

Waechter-Mead serves as the lead educator at the Webster County Extension Services in Red Cloud. In the new role as director, she will oversee statewide training and certification for beef producers while collaborating with industry partners and Nebraska Extension specialists to promote animal health, welfare and beef quality.

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA), in conjunction with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has confirmed the detection of a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a dairy herd in Nebraska. This is the first known case of HPAI in dairy cattle in the state.&nbsp; The herd is located in central Nebraska and has been quarantined.&nbsp;

The National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) confirmed that the strain of the virus is very similar to a strain from California.&nbsp; With supportive care, dairy cattle recover with little to no mortality associated with the disease.

State Veterinarian Dr. Roger Dudley encourages Nebraska dairy producers to follow strict biosecurity protocols and to contact their veterinarian immediately if their animals are exhibiting any symptoms of the virus.

What are the clinical signs of HPAI in dairy cattle?

HPAI symptoms in dairy cattle mostly affect late-stage lactating cows. Common clinical signs of HPAI in dairy cows decrease in food consumption, clear nasal discharge, drop in milk production, tacky or loose feces, lethargy, dehydration, fever, and thicker, concentrated (colostrum-like) milk.&nbsp;

CHADRON, Neb. – Historic black-and-white photographs by Mabel Graham McIntosh Souther are on display at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center through the fall 2025 semester. The exhibit is free and open to public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to Noon and 1 to 4 p.m.

The exhibit includes a&nbsp;<a href="https://chadronstate.smugmug.com/News/Recent/i-kd4jhGm/A" target="_blank">large panorama</a>&nbsp;of Crawford taken about 1901 and a tripod Souther used in her work. Sandoz Center Program Coordinator Laure Sinn said she and Bruce McIntosh, Souther’s great-nephew and a Dawes County resident, created the exhibit.

The exhibit features a pair of Souther’s cross-country skis, an oil painting, her portrait, and photographs depicting ranching, hunting, trapping, cultural, and recreational activities in eastern Wyoming and western Nebraska.

Souther, born in 1864 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, was the daughter of Charles McIntosh and Martha Graham.

According to McIntosh, Souther and her two younger teenage brothers came to live with their aunt in Crawford after their parents died.

“Mabel had to get an apartment in town during the winter of 1888-89 so that she could regularly open the post office where she was the deputy postmaster,” McIntosh said.

Souther married Williams Souther in 1892, according to McIntosh. The couple raised four children: John “Barron,” Susan Page, Grace, and Mabel. Later, she was the chief clerk of the wholesale grocery house Barron &amp; Souther. She died in Lincoln in 1962 and is buried in Crawford.

Souther was commissioned by Marshall Field, a prominent Chicago business owner, to provide photographic documentation of Williams’ and Marshall’s mutual investments. As foreman, Williams oversaw the Big Red/U-Cross ranch. Williams died in 1908 leaving Mabel with many business holdings and four children, according to McIntosh. Souther photographed a large&nbsp;<a href="https://history.nebraska.gov/sheep-ranch-photographs/" target="_blank">sheep ranch</a>&nbsp;near Crawford and the&nbsp;<a href="https://nebraska.access.preservica.com/uncategorized/IO_629cf7d3-7ef7-4673-a6f8-59204b066e46/" target="_blank">Big Red Ranch</a>&nbsp;near Ucross, Wyoming.

In 1962, Souther’s daughter Mabel, donated 40 of her photographs to the Nebraska State Historical Society. Her camera and photographic equipment are now preserved in the society’s museum.
