Visitors might see machinery and site preparations beginning prior to the closure. The project will enhance accessibility by improving the connection from the Americans with Disabilities Act trailer parking slip to the top of the ramp. New sidewalks will be added along the length of the ramp to improve access to docks.

Recent repairs also were completed at Powder Horn boat ramp at Merritt Reservoir Wildlife Management Area, where winter heaving had damaged the launch. A center section of the ramp was replaced while lake levels were low. The ramp will reopen once water levels rise. A new roll-in dock system is expected to be installed at the ramp ahead of next boating season.

All work is being completed by Nebraska Game and Parks’ Engineering Division and the Operations and Construction team, with funding provided through Game Cash.

Boat Ramp Improvements Made at Merritt Reservoir

The Nebraska State Fair wrapped up its 2025 run with a total attendance of 334,383, marking an increase of six percent year over year.

Opening weekend was bolstered by phenomenal weather, with Saturday and Sunday providing some of the best conditions the Fair has seen in recent years. The second weekend experienced showers on Saturday that dampened crowds slightly, but attendance rebounded with a strong turnout of over 54k attendees on Sunday.&nbsp;

“The weather gave us a huge boost early on, and even with a little rain, we saw incredible energy across the fairgrounds,” said Jaime Parr, Executive Director of the Nebraska State Fair. “Attendance definitely isn’t everything, but it is a good indicator for our team to evaluate and explore year over year to monitor trends and anomalies.”

So many guests poured into the fairgrounds that parking lots reached capacity on multiple days, making it more convenient for some to take the free shuttles offered from Sam’s Club and Central Community College parking lots.

According to guest surveys, folks visiting the fair spent an average of more than six hours each visit, which Parr notes is a little more than last year, likely due to cooler temperatures.

&nbsp; Overall guest satisfaction was up 2.5 percent compared to last year, with 80 percent of attendees reporting the Fair as a “fun experience.”

“Our goal is always to create an environment where people of all ages can come unplug and explore, and enjoy the very best of Nebraska,” added Parr. “This year, the feedback tells us we succeeded in that mission.”

With the Fair now concluded, staff will spend the next two weeks cleaning up the campus and preparing for their next major event, the Aksarben Stock Show, scheduled for September 25–28. Following that, the Nebraska State Fair team will officially hand the keys back to Fonner Park, the owner of the campus.

Ash Hollow SHP to Host Book Signing Sept. 5

SIDNEY, Neb. — On September 2, 2025, at approximately 6:16 PM, the Sidney Police Department was dispatched to a disturbance call on Country Club Drive following a report of shots fired. The caller stated that a man was seen shooting at a woman who had run out of a nearby residence.

Upon arrival, officers located a woman and two juveniles outside the home. They were safely secured while a male suspect was located inside the residence and taken into custody. A BB gun, determined to be the weapon used, was recovered from the scene.

The suspect was arrested and booked into the Cheyenne County Jail without incident. No physical injuries were reported. The Sidney Police Department would like to thank the Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office for their assistance with this call.

Tuesday morning, Colonel Bryan Waugh kicked off a statewide campaign to promote safe travel for Husker home games. Throughout the week, troopers will hand off the Huskers’ game ball in communities across the state, to demonstrate the teamwork necessary to make gameday travel safe for all fans. The football will travel across Nebraska, finishing the relay when a trooper delivers the Huskers’ game ball to Memorial Stadium ahead of Saturday’s game.

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;- The Nebraska Public Service (PSC) welcomes visitors to learn about the regulatory process in Nebraska and the services provided by the PSC during the 2025 Husker Harvest Days (HHDays) in Grand Island (Sept. 9-11).

Home to the world’s largest totally irrigated working farm show, HHDays affords the PSC theopportunity to reach the people it serves. At its booth, located in the&nbsp;<a href="https://hhd25.mapyourshow.com/8_0/floorplan/?hallID=H&amp;selectedBooth=DIBW1827" target="_blank">West Diversified IndustryBuilding (West D1)</a>, visitors will find Commissioners and staff providing information andengaging in conversation about the Commissions regulatory responsibilities.

“From ag and transportation to telecommunications and natural gas, the Commission plays a rolein the lives of many Nebraskans on a daily basis,” said Commission Chair Tim Schram.

With harvest season getting underway, a focus at the PSC booth will be providing participantswith needed information on Nebraska law when it comes to the selling, or storage of grain.

“Our rules and regulations are in place to protect both the seller and producer,” said Terri Fritz,Director PSC Grain Department. “So, for anyone working with a grain dealer, it is important toknow if that the dealer is licensed by the PSC to do business in Nebraska.”

The 2025 HHDays runs Tuesday-Thursday, September 9-11, with booths opening at 8 a.m., each day.&nbsp;

Commissioner Schram said, “We look forward to spending time with folks and sharing information about the Commission and its service to the public.”

PSC To Provide Information At Husker Harvest Days

September is recognized nationwide as Suicide Prevention &amp; Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, provide education and encourage meaningful conversations around mental health. To support this important cause, Box Butte General Hospital’s Senior Life Solutions will host an open house on Thursday, Sept. 4, from Noon-2 p.m. at 2307 Box Butte Avenue in Alliance.

“By raising awareness and educating people about the signs that someone may be struggling with suicidal thoughts, we can make a difference,” said Denasha Schmunk, RN, Program Director of Senior Life Solutions. “Suicide Prevention &amp; Awareness Month gives us the opportunity to pause, reflect and ensure that those around us have the support they need and are not left at risk.”

At the open house, community members will be invited to learn more about mental health resources, place a pinwheel in remembrance of loved ones lost to suicide or in support of suicide prevention and connect with others in a supportive environment. There will be refreshments and cookies served.

Senior Life Solutions is a program of Box Butte General Hospital designed to meet the unique emotional and behavioral health needs of adults—typically age 65 and older—who may be experiencing depression or anxiety related to life changes that often come with aging. BBGH Invites Community for Suicide Prevention & Awareness Month

OMAHA, Neb.&nbsp; — As the Huskers return to Memorial Stadium for the first home game of the season, the Nebraska State Patrol urges fans to have a safe game plan for Husker Saturdays this year.

Tuesday, Colonel Bryan Waugh will kick off a statewide campaign to promote safe travel for Husker homes games. The event will take place at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 2, at the NSP Troop A Office, at 4411 S. 108th&nbsp;Street in Omaha. Media are invited to attend the event.

The campaign will involve troopers from around the state, culminating in the delivery of the Huskers’ game ball to Memorial Stadium ahead of Saturday’s game against Akron.

HOT SPRINGS, SD – Rangers at Wind Cave National Park will be leading programs throughout September and early October to listen for the bugle of the Rocky Mountain elk. The elk’s high-pitched whistle heralds the arrival of fall and the elk’s mating season.&nbsp;

Beginning Monday, September 8, rangers are giving brief interpretive programs about elk before leading a caravan to a nearby pullout to listen for them. These one-hour programs are offered Monday, Wednesday and Saturday evenings through Saturday, October 8. Participants meet at the Wind Cave Visitor Center front lawn at 7 p.m. and are encouraged to bring a flashlight, a camp chair or blanket to sit on, and to dress warmly. The program will be cancelled due to inclement weather.

 300 stairs. The Garden of Eden Tour lasts one hour and involves 150 stairs. Tours will be offered every thirty minutes throughout the day between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. through September 20, with reduced tours offered into the fall and winter.

Reservations for cave tours can be made up until two days before the tour at <a href="https://www.recreation.gov/" target="_blank">https://www.recreation.gov/</a>.

The park visitor center will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through September 20 with winter hours, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., beginning September 21.

Elk Bugling Programs & Cave Tours Offered this Fall at Wind Cave National Park

GERING, Neb. — Western Cooperative Company (WESTCO) and the UNL Panhandle Research and Extension Center (PREEC) welcomed area FFA chapters to its annual FFA Day on Wednesday, August 27, just outside of Gering.

The event brought together 250 high school students from 11 FFA Chapters across the Panhandle to learn more about agriculture, agribusiness and career opportunities in the cooperative system. “FFA Day is one of our favorite events of the year because it allows us to invest in the future of the agriculture industry,” said Agronomy Coordinator Morgan Schuh.

FFA members rotated through hands-on learning stations led by WESTCO employees and industry partners, covering topics such as agronomy, animal nutrition, precision technology and cooperative career paths. The event gave students a chance to interact directly with professionals working in agriculture and to see how classroom lessons connect to real-world applications.

Feed Division Manager Jared Mracek said, “WESTCO FFA Day was a huge success. Students gained insight into a variety of agricultural topics and real-world scenarios that impact farmers and ranchers daily. WESTCO is proud to host this event each year, recognizing that these students represent the next generation of agricultural stewards”

WESTCO Hosts Annual FFA Day for Area High School Students

"Poverty Isn't a Lack of Character" is a TED Talk that was filmed in 2017. Rutger Bregman talks about how living in poverty is not "Something is wrong with them," as many politicians would have us believe. Instead, it is having a scarcity mindset. He explains why this causes the poor to make so many poor decisions.

Bregman refers to a study done in the 1960's in India. Sugar cane farmers receive 60% of their annual income after harvest, which means they are relatively poor for part of the year, and rich for the other part. The researchers gave these farmers IQ tests before and after harvest. They consistently scored about 14 IQ points lower before harvest, when they were poor.

This research has been recreated with other groups with the same results. WebMD says people preoccupied with scarcity scored 13 to 14 points lower than those who did not have a scarcity mentality. The site goes on to remind us that 13 or 14 points is the difference between outstanding and average; between average and "borderline-deficient."

The scarcity mindset can result in short-sighted choices, a lack of confidence, and a focus on immediate needs over long-term goals.&nbsp;A scarcity mindset is a way of thinking that focuses on something you don’t have enough of. You become so obsessed with that lack that you have tunnel vision and cannot deal with anything else. You neglect other obligations, other needs. And you make poor decisions.

When we think of poverty, we tend to think of financial poverty, not having enough money for the things we need. But poverty training teaches us that poverty is a lack of any resource we need. It might also be a lack of time, not having necessary language skills, poor emotional control, poor health, no positive relationships with friends or role models, not understanding hidden rules, or lacking other kinds of social capital.

Loneliness is a social form of scarcity. A child moving to a new school is in poverty until s/he develops new friendships and learns the hidden rules of that school. Fitting into the new environment is taking most of the child's mental energy. During this time of adjustment there will be struggles, unhappiness, low grades, and lots of bad choices. This isn't true just for children, is it?

What if time is our scarce resource? We stress and ignore other tasks, things, and people around us. We get sloppy as we rush to finish something. We procrastinate and make excuses. These aren't the greatest decisions, are they?

What causes a scarcity mindset? Think about life-changing events like a major illness, having a baby, losing a job, a natural disaster, getting a divorce. Every one of those refocuses your mind and affects your decisions.

Sometimes a scarcity mindset is inherited, or based on events from childhood. Parents may have stressed about money, and their children pick up on that. They may be more competitive, where they never think they have enough. (Keeping up with the Joneses?) Educators often talk about ACEs, Adverse Childhood Experiences. These abuses or traumas create scarcity, because they cause a focus on something in the past.

Sometimes, a scarcity mindset can come from perceived scarcity, even if it’s not an actual scarcity. Societal influence, such as social media, public figures, and people around you, can affect your perceptions.

Scarcity affects decision making. It is hard to reason logically and solve problems. The ability to plan and complete a project is limited because the focus is somewhere else.

Getting Ahead: The Scarcity Mindset

Are your kids getting enough physical activity? Are you, as an adult or older adult, getting enough? Movement isn’t just about exercise; it’s a way for children to learn, grow, and connect with their families. For adults, it’s also about reducing stress, improving mental health, enhancing mobility, and lowering the risk of chronic disease. Whether it’s hopping through the living room, playing catch outside, dancing to a favorite song, enjoying an evening walk, or tackling a 5K, every moment of activity matters.

According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, children ages 6 to 17 should engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily. Most of that time should be spent in moderate-intensity activity that gets the heart pumping faster. At least three days a week, kids should also include vigorous-intensity activity, along with muscle-strengthening and bone-strengthening exercises. These don’t have to be complicated—muscle strengthening can be climbing monkey bars, while bone strengthening might be as simple as jumping rope.

For children under the age of 6, aim for approximately 3 hours of active play per day and limit sedentary screen time. Narrating their movements helps strengthen brain-body connections—for example, saying: “Your feet are gliding so quickly across the floor!” Singing movement songs like “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” creates a playful environment that supports early learning.

Regardless of age, caregiver participation is key. Parents, grandparents, and older siblings can all transform everyday moments into movement-filled memories.

Physical Activity for Adults and Older Adults

It’s not just kids who need movement. Adults should aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week (or 75 minutes of vigorous activity). Additionally, adults benefit from engaging in at least two days of muscle-strengthening exercises. Starting small and building consistency helps make physical activity a sustainable lifestyle habit.

Older adults benefit tremendously from regular physical activity, which supports balance, cognition, bone strength, and independence. Staying active reduces the risk of falls, injuries, and chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and some cancers. When incorporating movement into your daily routine, always listen to how your body feels. Gradually increase movement to build your stamina and strength, rather than jumping into an activity without a gradual build-up, to minimize the risk of injury or strain. Consult with your physician if you are concerned about starting a new exercise routine with existing health conditions.

Benefits of Physical Activity Across All Ages

With 74 percent of U.S. adults living with overweight or obesity, making physical activity a family priority can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall quality of life.

So, hop, skip, wiggle, and play—because active time is quality time for every generation.

Alliance, NE – At approximately 4:00 a.m. this morning, officers with the Alliance Police Department responded to a report of an attempted burglary at 935 Toluca Avenue. Upon arrival, officers observed a broken window adjacent to the side entry door. It appeared the suspect had broken the window to gain access to the door lock but did not enter the residence.

While canvassing the area, officers located a juvenile suspect lying in the grass nearby. The suspect was unarmed at the time of arrest. However, a loaded magazine for a Taurus handgun was found in his possession.

During the investigation, officers received a second report — a theft from a motor vehicle at 811 Toluca Avenue. The vehicle’s owner reported several stolen items, including a Taurus handgun. The vehicle had been left unlocked, and there were no signs of forced entry.

A subsequent search of the area between the two addresses led officers to the recovery of items including the stolen handgun. Footprints matching the juvenile suspect's shoes were discovered between the scene of the theft and the location where the firearm was recovered.

The juvenile was taken into custody, transported to a juvenile detention facility, and is facing the following charges:

-Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person (juvenile)

Werner Construction, of Hastings, is the contractor for this project. Work includes asphalt paving, culvert replacement curb and gutter, flumes, and grading and seeding. Traffic will be maintained with lane restrictions, a pilot car and flaggers and temporary traffic signals. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is Oct. 2026.

Weather permitting, will begin work on the bridges along Nebraska Highway 71 (N-71) on Sept. 8, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

Work will be on northbound and southbound bridges over U.S. Highway 30 (US-30) over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and northbound and southbound bridges over Lodgepole Creek. Work will include bridge deck and approach repair, deck surface treatment, and pavement lifting.

Iowa Civil Contracting is the prime contractor and Contractor Services, Inc. will be performing the traffic control. All traffic will be controlled by lane closures. Anticipated completion is 25 working days after project start.

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up and put phones down.

Work Will Begin on Multiple Nebraska Highways

LINCOLN, Neb. —&nbsp;The Nebraska Department of Transportation reminds drivers that the state’s updated move-over law takes effect Wednesday, Sept. 3.

Samples taken earlier this week at the lakes on alert measure above the threshold of eight parts per billion (ppb) of total microcystin, which is a toxin released by certain strains of blue-green algae.

When a health alert is issued, signs are posted to advise the public to use caution, and designated swimming beaches are closed during the alert. Recreational boating and fishing are permitted, but the public is advised to use caution and avoid exposure to the water, particularly by avoiding any activity that could lead to swallowing the water. Do not let pets get in the water or drink from the lake. People can still use the public areas for camping, picnics and other outdoor activities.

Weekly sampling has been conducted at 56 public lake sites since the first week of May. The lakes will continue to be monitored weekly through the end of September.
