"Poverty Isn't a Lack of Character" is a TED Talk that was filmed in 2017. Rutger Bregman talks about how living in poverty is not "Something is wrong with them," as many politicians would have us believe. Instead, it is having a scarcity mindset. He explains why this causes the poor to make so many poor decisions.

Bregman refers to a study done in the 1960's in India. Sugar cane farmers receive 60% of their annual income after harvest, which means they are relatively poor for part of the year, and rich for the other part. The researchers gave these farmers IQ tests before and after harvest. They consistently scored about 14 IQ points lower before harvest, when they were poor.

This research has been recreated with other groups with the same results. WebMD says people preoccupied with scarcity scored 13 to 14 points lower than those who did not have a scarcity mentality. The site goes on to remind us that 13 or 14 points is the difference between outstanding and average; between average and "borderline-deficient."

The scarcity mindset can result in short-sighted choices, a lack of confidence, and a focus on immediate needs over long-term goals.&nbsp;A scarcity mindset is a way of thinking that focuses on something you don’t have enough of. You become so obsessed with that lack that you have tunnel vision and cannot deal with anything else. You neglect other obligations, other needs. And you make poor decisions.

When we think of poverty, we tend to think of financial poverty, not having enough money for the things we need. But poverty training teaches us that poverty is a lack of any resource we need. It might also be a lack of time, not having necessary language skills, poor emotional control, poor health, no positive relationships with friends or role models, not understanding hidden rules, or lacking other kinds of social capital.

Loneliness is a social form of scarcity. A child moving to a new school is in poverty until s/he develops new friendships and learns the hidden rules of that school. Fitting into the new environment is taking most of the child's mental energy. During this time of adjustment there will be struggles, unhappiness, low grades, and lots of bad choices. This isn't true just for children, is it?

What if time is our scarce resource? We stress and ignore other tasks, things, and people around us. We get sloppy as we rush to finish something. We procrastinate and make excuses. These aren't the greatest decisions, are they?

What causes a scarcity mindset? Think about life-changing events like a major illness, having a baby, losing a job, a natural disaster, getting a divorce. Every one of those refocuses your mind and affects your decisions.

Sometimes a scarcity mindset is inherited, or based on events from childhood. Parents may have stressed about money, and their children pick up on that. They may be more competitive, where they never think they have enough. (Keeping up with the Joneses?) Educators often talk about ACEs, Adverse Childhood Experiences. These abuses or traumas create scarcity, because they cause a focus on something in the past.

Sometimes, a scarcity mindset can come from perceived scarcity, even if it’s not an actual scarcity. Societal influence, such as social media, public figures, and people around you, can affect your perceptions.

Scarcity affects decision making. It is hard to reason logically and solve problems. The ability to plan and complete a project is limited because the focus is somewhere else.

Getting Ahead: The Scarcity Mindset

Are your kids getting enough physical activity? Are you, as an adult or older adult, getting enough? Movement isn’t just about exercise; it’s a way for children to learn, grow, and connect with their families. For adults, it’s also about reducing stress, improving mental health, enhancing mobility, and lowering the risk of chronic disease. Whether it’s hopping through the living room, playing catch outside, dancing to a favorite song, enjoying an evening walk, or tackling a 5K, every moment of activity matters.

According to the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, children ages 6 to 17 should engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily. Most of that time should be spent in moderate-intensity activity that gets the heart pumping faster. At least three days a week, kids should also include vigorous-intensity activity, along with muscle-strengthening and bone-strengthening exercises. These don’t have to be complicated—muscle strengthening can be climbing monkey bars, while bone strengthening might be as simple as jumping rope.

For children under the age of 6, aim for approximately 3 hours of active play per day and limit sedentary screen time. Narrating their movements helps strengthen brain-body connections—for example, saying: “Your feet are gliding so quickly across the floor!” Singing movement songs like “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” creates a playful environment that supports early learning.

Regardless of age, caregiver participation is key. Parents, grandparents, and older siblings can all transform everyday moments into movement-filled memories.

Physical Activity for Adults and Older Adults

It’s not just kids who need movement. Adults should aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week (or 75 minutes of vigorous activity). Additionally, adults benefit from engaging in at least two days of muscle-strengthening exercises. Starting small and building consistency helps make physical activity a sustainable lifestyle habit.

Older adults benefit tremendously from regular physical activity, which supports balance, cognition, bone strength, and independence. Staying active reduces the risk of falls, injuries, and chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and some cancers. When incorporating movement into your daily routine, always listen to how your body feels. Gradually increase movement to build your stamina and strength, rather than jumping into an activity without a gradual build-up, to minimize the risk of injury or strain. Consult with your physician if you are concerned about starting a new exercise routine with existing health conditions.

Benefits of Physical Activity Across All Ages

With 74 percent of U.S. adults living with overweight or obesity, making physical activity a family priority can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall quality of life.

So, hop, skip, wiggle, and play—because active time is quality time for every generation.

Engaging in Physical Activity for the Whole Family

Alliance, NE – At approximately 4:00 a.m. this morning, officers with the Alliance Police Department responded to a report of an attempted burglary at 935 Toluca Avenue. Upon arrival, officers observed a broken window adjacent to the side entry door. It appeared the suspect had broken the window to gain access to the door lock but did not enter the residence.

While canvassing the area, officers located a juvenile suspect lying in the grass nearby. The suspect was unarmed at the time of arrest. However, a loaded magazine for a Taurus handgun was found in his possession.

During the investigation, officers received a second report — a theft from a motor vehicle at 811 Toluca Avenue. The vehicle’s owner reported several stolen items, including a Taurus handgun. The vehicle had been left unlocked, and there were no signs of forced entry.

A subsequent search of the area between the two addresses led officers to the recovery of items including the stolen handgun. Footprints matching the juvenile suspect's shoes were discovered between the scene of the theft and the location where the firearm was recovered.

The juvenile was taken into custody, transported to a juvenile detention facility, and is facing the following charges:

-Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person (juvenile)

The Alliance Police Department urges residents to lock their vehicles and secure valuables to reduce the risk of theft.

GERING, Neb. — Weather permitting, work will begin Sept. 8 on Nebraska Highway 250 (N-250), from reference post 13.38 to reference post 26.10, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

Werner Construction, of Hastings, is the contractor for this project. Work includes asphalt paving, culvert replacement curb and gutter, flumes, and grading and seeding. Traffic will be maintained with lane restrictions, a pilot car and flaggers and temporary traffic signals. A 12-foot width restriction will be in effect. Anticipated completion is Oct. 2026.

Weather permitting, will begin work on the bridges along Nebraska Highway 71 (N-71) on Sept. 8, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.

Work will be on northbound and southbound bridges over U.S. Highway 30 (US-30) over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and northbound and southbound bridges over Lodgepole Creek. Work will include bridge deck and approach repair, deck surface treatment, and pavement lifting.

Iowa Civil Contracting is the prime contractor and Contractor Services, Inc. will be performing the traffic control. All traffic will be controlled by lane closures. Anticipated completion is 25 working days after project start.

Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously in and near work zones, to buckle up and put phones down.

Work Will Begin on Multiple Nebraska Highways

LINCOLN, Neb. —&nbsp;The Nebraska Department of Transportation reminds drivers that the state’s updated move-over law takes effect Wednesday, Sept. 3.

Previously, the move-over law applied only to emergency and roadside assistance vehicles. Beginning Sept. 3, drivers must slow down and move over when approaching all stopped vehicles and vulnerable road users on the side of the highway.&nbsp;This includes pedestrians, bicyclists, people in crosswalks and agricultural vehicles or equipment.

"We are working to make Nebraska’s highways as safe as we can,” NDOT Director Vicki Kramer said. “The provisions in LB 530 help us reach that goal. Of course, highway safety ultimately depends on each of us making the right choices every time we get behind the wheel.”

NDOT traffic engineers are developing and installing signage for the updated move-over law. The agency is also creating a policy for variable speed limit reductions and will keep records of when and how speed limits are temporarily changed once LB 530 takes effect.

BEVERAGES OF THE DAMNED: You Dropped A Bomb Pop On Me

LINCOLN, Neb. —&nbsp;The state of Nebraska has issued a health alert for Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB), also known as toxic blue-green algae, at Bluestem Lake in Lancaster County.

Cub Creek Lake in Jefferson County will remain on health alert this week after being on alert last week.

Samples taken earlier this week at the lakes on alert measure above the threshold of eight parts per billion (ppb) of total microcystin, which is a toxin released by certain strains of blue-green algae.

When a health alert is issued, signs are posted to advise the public to use caution, and designated swimming beaches are closed during the alert. Recreational boating and fishing are permitted, but the public is advised to use caution and avoid exposure to the water, particularly by avoiding any activity that could lead to swallowing the water. Do not let pets get in the water or drink from the lake. People can still use the public areas for camping, picnics and other outdoor activities.

Recreational boating and fishing are permitted, but the public is advised to use caution and avoid exposure to the water, particularly by avoiding any activity that could lead to swallowing the water. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it lost contact with the aircraft about 9:30 p.m. as the plane was headed toward Kearney Regional Airport. Its last recorded position placed it several miles north of the runway.&nbsp;

Search teams from multiple agencies scoured the area overnight using drones, patrol vehicles and utility terrain vehicles (UTV’s). Heavy fog forced crews to pause the operation in the early morning hours at 2 a.m. before resuming at daybreak. The wreckage was located around 10 a.m. Thursday.&nbsp;

Both the pilot and passenger died at the crash site.&nbsp;The victims are Dr. Mark H. Meyer, 77, and Kent O. Magnuson, 72, both residents of rural Kearney, Nebraska.

2 dead after small plane crashes near Kearney

At approximately 1:15 a.m. Thursday, a trooper saw a Chevrolet Silverado speeding at approximately 100 miles per hour on Interstate 80 near 42nd&nbsp;Street in Omaha. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to yield. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The pickup entered I-480 northbound and continued fleeing with speeds of 100 miles per hour. The vehicle continued northbound onto Highway 75 and eventually turned eastbound on Ames Avenue. After several blocks, the driver failed to navigate a curve, drove through a fence and struck a parked vehicle.

A passenger of the pickup immediately fled on foot. The driver remained in the vehicle. When he was taken into custody, the driver provided false information. Troopers and Omaha Police Officers searched the area, but the passenger was not located.

The driver, Jose Jaimes, 28-years-old, of Omaha, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, driving under the influence, refusing a chemical test, obstructing a peace officer, false reporting, driving under suspension, and numerous traffic offenses. He was medically cleared at the hospital and then lodged in Douglas County Jail.

Troopers Arrest One After Overnight Pursuit in Omaha

NDCS deployed SERVES members to support NSP staff. SERVES is an NDCS special team that delivers resilience-promoting interventions to staff members and their families prior to, during and following a critical incident.&nbsp;

An investigation of the incident has been launched. Findings will be provided to the county attorney for determination of criminal prosecution. The NDCS disciplinary process will be utilized with sanctions such as loss of good time, applied according to the rules and regulations.

NSP Staff Members Injured in Assault

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska drivers will face higher penalties for speeding beginning Sept. 3, under a new law aimed at curbing a surge in extreme speeding across the state.

The measure, LB530, raises fines for speeding violations and authorizes the Nebraska Department of Transportation to impose temporary, reduced speed limits on interstates such as I-80 during poor weather, emergencies or traffic congestion.

Under the new law, fines will increase as follows:
— 1–5 mph over the limit: $50 (up from $10)
— 6–9 mph over: $75 (up from $25)
— 10–14 mph over: $125 (up from $75)
— 15–19 mph over: $200 (up from $125)
— 20–34 mph over: $300 (up from $200)
— 35 mph or more over: $400 (up from $300)

The law also classifies driving at more than twice the posted speed limit as reckless driving, which carries additional penalties.

Nebraska to raise speeding fines

ALLIANCE, Neb. – Box Butte County RSVP will be collecting items to deliver care packages for the City’s First Responders. Some items needed include protein-rich snacks, gum, sunscreen, ChapStick, hand sanitizer, candy, tissues and drink packets with electrolytes and/or caffeine.

Flags to Fly at Half-Staff to Honor Victims of Minneapolis Tragedy

It takes just one spark to ignite a wildfire. With several harvest seasons opening Sept. 1, including dove, grouse and archery deer, hunters are reminded to act responsibly in the field and to do their part to prevent wildfires.

Though drought conditions have been reduced in eastern and central Nebraska due to recent rains, most of the western third of the state remains dry. Most of the Panhandle is experiencing moderate drought conditions, according to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln drought monitor.

Driving vehicles or parking on dry, tall grass is a primary threat. Grass can ignite within seconds of contacting a hot surface, such as a vehicle’s exhaust and catalytic converter systems.

With that in mind, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission urges hunters to take the following precautions to avoid the risk of wildfire:

Panhandle police activity, Aug. 20 - Aug. 26

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. – The Nebraska State Fair is in full swing, filling the grounds at Fonner Park in Grand Island with the familiar sights, sounds and activities that bring hundreds of thousands of people together each summer.

It’s a tradition that dates back generations. And for many attendees, including Courtney Glock, it’s the best time of the year.

A Grand Island native, Glock fondly recalls her family’s annual trips to the State Fair in Lincoln, where the event was held through 2009. Those weekends were the highlight of her summer, the kind of experiences that shaped her childhood and created memories she still treasures.

“I’ve always loved the State Fair,” she said. “We went every year. It was a tradition for us. We would go to Lincoln and make a full day or weekend of it. Most of the time we didn’t leave the state for a summer vacation – it was the State Fair.”

Today, Glock doesn’t just attend the State Fair. She’s one of the people responsible for bringing it to life.

The University of Nebraska at Kearney graduate is in her second year as marketing director for the Nebraska State Fair, overseeing everything from billboards, commercials and social media content to the theme and signage that set the tone each year. It’s a role she once declared as her dream job during a classroom exercise at UNK.

“I remember telling (senior lecturer) Michelle Widger, ‘I want to be the marketing director at the Nebraska State Fair.’ I had no idea what that entailed, but I loved the State Fair so much that I knew it’s what I wanted to do,” she recalled with a smile.

Her path to that position started more than a decade ago, when she was still a student at Northwest Public Schools.

With the State Fair now located in Grand Island, Glock was able to volunteer on “Planting Day,” helping prepare the grounds for visitors, as well as during cleanup events. That led to seasonal work scanning tickets at the gates, a job she enjoyed because it put her face-to-face with the people who came to experience the fair.

“I’ve always been a people person, so I loved the idea of getting to welcome people to the fair,” she said. “It felt like Disney. I got to see all of these kids coming through the gates. They’re so excited and they have stars in their eyes, and I got to be the first person to greet them. I thought that was the coolest thing.”

By the time Glock arrived at UNK – the same school her mother, brother and sister attended – her love for the fair was already part of her identity. She majored in advertising and public relations with a minor in marketing, joined the Ad/PR Club, worked at the Child Development Center on campus and spent time on the staff at The Antelope student newspaper.

She found a strong sense of belonging in the close-knit program.

“I immediately felt so connected to my professors, even in my freshman-level classes,” Glock said. “If I had a question, I could go directly to them. If I had an issue with an assignment, they were willing to work with me. If I didn’t understand something, they were willing to stay late to help me understand it. I don’t think you get that level of support at every school.”

“I’m so grateful for the experience that I had at UNK in the ad/PR program,” she added. “I felt incredibly well-rounded when I got out of school. I’m a huge advocate for hiring any ad/PR student who comes out of UNK because I believe the professors get you ready to enter the workforce.”

Glock completed an internship with the Grand Island Area Chamber of Commerce before graduating in 2018. Just three days into that role, she was offered a full-time marketing and communications position that kept her with the chamber for more than six years. She rose through the ranks quickly, eventually becoming the youngest vice president in the chamber’s history at age 25.

During her time with the chamber, Glock led the Young Professionals program, assisted with community initiatives, presented in front of the city council and testified before the Nebraska Legislature.

“It was seriously instrumental to my success,” she said. “Working at the chamber of commerce pushed me outside my comfort zone and probably prepared me the best for stepping into a role like this where you have things being fired at you at all times and you have to be able to pivot, keep your composure and keep working toward your goal.”

The chamber also gave her another way to stay connected to the State Fair. Glock spent five years coordinating the roughly 900 people who volunteer at the event each year, including some UNK students.

“That truly got my foot in door,” she said. “Getting to coordinate 900 different personalities was incredibly difficult, but it taught me a lot about communication, organization and how important relationships are.”

She laughs about the time someone gave her a nameplate that read “chaos coordinator,” but the experience gave her a deeper appreciation for the people who make the fair possible.

“I thought I loved the fair before, but I loved it so much more after serving as volunteer coordinator,” Glock said. “That showed me how connected Nebraska really is.”

Her leadership and community involvement didn’t go unnoticed. In 2023, she was named Young Professional of the Year at the Inspire Awards, and she received the Community Involvement and Impact Award from Connecting Young Nebraskans. She was also honored as the Nebraska State Fair’s grand marshal.

The accolades reflect her commitment to giving back. Glock jokes that her only hobby is volunteering.

“I love to give back to my community, to be involved and to be part of the success,” she said. “I love central Nebraska and all that we have to offer. I think we are underrated. Any chance I can get to improve central Nebraska as a whole, I’m all about it.”

Currently, Glock is part of the Grand Island Young Professionals program, Connecting Young Nebraskans and International Association of Fairs and Expos. She’s vice president of the Northwest Education Foundation Board, chair of the GRACE Cancer Foundation Board, a wish granter for Make-A-Wish and a steering committee member and Leadership Cluster coordinator for SkillsUSA.

When Glock was asked to join the Nebraska State Fair staff in June 2024, she had to say yes.

“I couldn’t pass up the opportunity,” she said. “I think I was made for this position in a sense, and I’m glad that door opened for me.”

It’s a year-round job that keeps her on her toes. Working with other staff members and an outside agency, Glock oversees all the advertising and promotional materials for the State Fair, from logos, apparel, signage and graphics to commercials, social media campaigns, website design and email blasts. She also coordinates media coverage and event promotions during the fair’s 11-day run, which ends each year on Labor Day.

“I don’t like to sit still. And I don’t like to be bored,” she said with a laugh. “I’m not sure I can say I’ve been bored since I started working at the State Fair. There’s so much that changes with technology and new ways of thinking and doing things. I’m constantly looking for improvement in every area.”

This year’s theme – Showcase Your Fair Face – was designed to highlight the emotions the event evokes. Glock describes the pride of a child winning a purple ribbon, the determination of a young exhibitor entering the show ring for the first time, the thrill of a carnival ride and the joy of a vendor greeting a returning customer.

What she loves most are the stories behind it all – the 95-year-old exhibitor, the man who grew the state’s largest pumpkin, the 300,000-plus people who come together to make the fair a one-of-a-kind experience.

“Every Nebraskan who is out here at the State Fair has a story to tell that relates them back to our state, back to agriculture and tradition and heritage,” said Glock, who delights in sharing those stories on social media, with reporters and in conversations on the fairgrounds.

“When the State Fair comes to life on this campus, there’s so much magic that unfolds. As soon as you smell a funnel cake and the sun is shining down and you hear the State Fair slogan over the loudspeaker, it just triggers all of your senses. I feel like the people specifically make it what it is. And I feel like that’s true about our state, too.”

As she helps shape the future of the fair, Glock hasn’t forgotten where her journey began. She remains a proud UNK alumna, mentoring current students who intern or work at the fair.

“It’s the best feeling,” she said. “Getting to work alongside and mentor students for years to come is going to be one of the most special parts of what I do here.”

And when she passes another Loper on the fairgrounds, there’s always time to “throw the Lopes” – a small reminder that her path from UNK to the Nebraska State Fair was no accident. It was, in many ways, meant to be.

I’m a huge advocate for hiring any ad/PR student who comes out of UNK because I believe the professors get you ready to enter the workforce.”Glock completed an internship with the Grand Island Area Chamber of Commerce before graduating in 2018. Just three days into that role, she was offered a full-time marketing and communications position that kept her with the chamber for more than six years. She rose through the ranks quickly, eventually becoming the youngest vice president in the chamber’s history at age 25.<figure>

 </figure>During her time with the chamber, Glock led the Young Professionals program, assisted with community initiatives, presented in front of the city council and testified before the Nebraska Legislature.“It was seriously instrumental to my success,” she said. “Working at the chamber of commerce pushed me outside my comfort zone and probably prepared me the best for stepping into a role like this where you have things being fired at you at all times and you have to be able to pivot, keep your composure and keep working toward your goal.”The chamber also gave her another way to stay connected to the State Fair. Glock spent five years coordinating the roughly 900 people who volunteer at the event each year, including some UNK students.“That truly got my foot in door,” she said. “Getting to coordinate 900 different personalities was incredibly difficult, but it taught me a lot about communication, organization and how important relationships are.”She laughs about the time someone gave her a nameplate that read “chaos coordinator,” but the experience gave her a deeper appreciation for the people who make the fair possible.“I thought I loved the fair before, but I loved it so much more after serving as volunteer coordinator,” Glock said. “That showed me how connected Nebraska really is.”Her leadership and community involvement didn’t go unnoticed. In 2023, she was named Young Professional of the Year at the Inspire Awards, and she received the Community Involvement and Impact Award from Connecting Young Nebraskans. She was also honored as the Nebraska State Fair’s grand marshal.The accolades reflect her commitment to giving back. Glock jokes that her only hobby is volunteering.“I love to give back to my community, to be involved and to be part of the success,” she said. “I love central Nebraska and all that we have to offer. I think we are underrated. Any chance I can get to improve central Nebraska as a whole, I’m all about it.”Currently, Glock is part of the Grand Island Young Professionals program, Connecting Young Nebraskans and International Association of Fairs and Expos.  </figure>When Glock was asked to join the Nebraska State Fair staff in June 2024, she had to say yes.“I couldn’t pass up the opportunity,” she said. “I think I was made for this position in a sense, and I’m glad that door opened for me.”It’s a year-round job that keeps her on her toes. Working with other staff members and an outside agency, Glock oversees all the advertising and promotional materials for the State Fair, from logos, apparel, signage and graphics to commercials, social media campaigns, website design and email blasts. She also coordinates media coverage and event promotions during the fair’s 11-day run, which ends each year on Labor Day.“I don’t like to sit still. And I don’t like to be bored,” she said with a laugh. “I’m not sure I can say I’ve been bored since I started working at the State Fair. There’s so much that changes with technology and new ways of thinking and doing things. I’m constantly looking for improvement in every area.”This year’s theme – Showcase Your Fair Face – was designed to highlight the emotions the event evokes. Glock describes the pride of a child winning a purple ribbon, the determination of a young exhibitor entering the show ring for the first time, the thrill of a carnival ride and the joy of a vendor greeting a returning customer.What she loves most are the stories behind it all – the 95-year-old exhibitor, the man who grew the state’s largest pumpkin, the 300,000-plus people who come together to make the fair a one-of-a-kind experience.“Every Nebraskan who is out here at the State Fair has a story to tell that relates them back to our state, back to agriculture and tradition and heritage,” said Glock, who delights in sharing those stories on social media, with reporters and in conversations on the fairgrounds.“When the State Fair comes to life on this campus, there’s so much magic that unfolds. As soon as you smell a funnel cake and the sun is shining down and you hear the State Fair slogan over the loudspeaker, it just triggers all of your senses. I feel like the people specifically make it what it is. And I feel like that’s true about our state, too.”As she helps shape the future of the fair, Glock hasn’t forgotten where her journey began. She remains a proud UNK alumna, mentoring current students who intern or work at the fair.“It’s the best feeling,” she said. “Getting to work alongside and mentor students for years to come is going to be one of the most special parts of what I do here.”And when she passes another Loper on the fairgrounds, there’s always time to “throw the Lopes” – a small reminder that her path from UNK to the Nebraska State Fair was no accident. It was, in many ways, meant to be.

UNK grad Courtney Glock comes Full Circle at the Nebraska State Fair

OMAHA, Neb.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol, with assistance from the Omaha Police Department, have arrested two people after a pursuit in Omaha early Wednesday.

At approximately 12:45 a.m. today, a trooper saw a Volkswagen Passat speeding on Highway 75 just north of downtown Omaha. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the driver accelerated and fled northbound. The trooper pursued for a short distance until OPD’s Able 1 helicopter got overhead and took over the pursuit from the air.

Able 1 tracked the vehicle for approximately 50 minutes as the driver continued driving recklessly, nearly colliding with other vehicles. The vehicle traveled between Nebraska and Iowa multiple times before a trooper was able to successfully deploy stop sticks on Interstate 480 near 14th&nbsp;Street. The vehicle came to a stop. The driver fled on foot, but he was quickly taken into custody by additional troopers and OPD officers. A passenger remained with the vehicle.

The driver, Anthony Chase, 22-years-old, of Bellevue, was arrested for obstructing a peace officer, willful reckless driving, and flight to avoid arrest. The passenger, Mason Trevillion, 22-years-old, of Omaha, was arrested on an outstanding warrant.&nbsp; Both were lodged in Douglas County Jail.

CHADRON, Neb. – With new leadership and realigned responsibilities, Chadron State College’s Admissions team is preparing to connect with students in more personal and meaningful ways. Dr. Derry Ebert, vice president for enrollment management, said the changes are designed to better serve prospective students across western Nebraska and beyond.

“Our Admissions team will connect more with western Nebraska and spend time at high schools,” Ebert said. “That may be at a college fair, a high school football or basketball game, or a high school theatre performance. Wherever we can find a way to serve our schools and connect with prospective students, we will be there. We want to share why we feel CSC is a great place to begin a new journey.”

Among the counselors focused on high school students is Carlie McPeak of Dunning, Nebraska, a CSC alum with a degree in sports and recreation management. Raised on a ranch with a graduating class of only six, McPeak said she values CSC’s small class sizes and personal connections.

“I’m excited to get to know students as they take their next steps in education,” she said.

As a former CSC cheerleader, she said she sees the campus as more than a place to earn a degree.“We strive to make CSC a place for everyone to call home,” Gabel said.&nbsp;Sandra Arlt of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, will work with students interested in transferring. Arlt has degrees from Western Nebraska Community College and CSC in social work and psychological sciences. As a first-generation student, she said she knows the value of a supportive campus community.“I’m excited to meet students and support them on their journey to CSC,” she said.Erin Orn will focus on recruiting athletes. She is a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a degree in sociology and criminology of law. She said she loves the campus size and welcoming community.“Come visit campus and take advantage of the close-knit community,” Orn said. “Get involved, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.”Sam McKinley of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is a CSC alum who will focus on graduate students and helping students interested in RHOP, RLOP and RBLI. He is a former CSC football player and coaching assistant. He said the genuine, welcoming spirit of campus is valuable.“The smaller class sizes create more meaningful connections with staff and other students,” he said.Gabi Perez-Patterson of Sioux City, Iowa, is a bilingual CSC alum who majored in family and consumer sciences with a minor in exercise science, who will work with adult students. She said the community makes the college unique.“Whether it’s on campus or out in the community, the people of Chadron are welcoming and friendly,” she said.Perez-Patterson encourages students to visit campus, either in person or virtually, to see what CSC offers.Courtney Bremer is returning in her role as Campus Visit Coordinator.The 2025-26 admissions team reflects a strong CSC alumni presence, regional roots, and commitment to personal connections.
