KEARNEY, Neb.&nbsp;— A small plane crash claims two lives northeast of Kearney late Wednesday.&nbsp;

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it lost contact with the aircraft about 9:30 p.m. as the plane was headed toward Kearney Regional Airport. Its last recorded position placed it several miles north of the runway.&nbsp;

Search teams from multiple agencies scoured the area overnight using drones, patrol vehicles and utility terrain vehicles (UTV’s). Heavy fog forced crews to pause the operation in the early morning hours at 2 a.m. before resuming at daybreak. The wreckage was located around 10 a.m. Thursday.&nbsp;

Both the pilot and passenger died at the crash site.&nbsp;The victims are Dr. Mark H. Meyer, 77, and Kent O. Magnuson, 72, both residents of rural Kearney, Nebraska.

Flight data indicated the plane departed from an airfield near Terrace, Minnesota, on Wednesday evening around 7 p.m. &nbsp;

OMAHA, Neb.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol arrested one person following a pursuit in Omaha overnight.

At approximately 1:15 a.m. Thursday, a trooper saw a Chevrolet Silverado speeding at approximately 100 miles per hour on Interstate 80 near 42nd&nbsp;Street in Omaha. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to yield. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The pickup entered I-480 northbound and continued fleeing with speeds of 100 miles per hour. The vehicle continued northbound onto Highway 75 and eventually turned eastbound on Ames Avenue. After several blocks, the driver failed to navigate a curve, drove through a fence and struck a parked vehicle.

A passenger of the pickup immediately fled on foot. The driver remained in the vehicle. When he was taken into custody, the driver provided false information. Troopers and Omaha Police Officers searched the area, but the passenger was not located.

The driver, Jose Jaimes, 28-years-old, of Omaha, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, driving under the influence, refusing a chemical test, obstructing a peace officer, false reporting, driving under suspension, and numerous traffic offenses. He was medically cleared at the hospital and then lodged in Douglas County Jail.

Troopers Arrest One After Overnight Pursuit in Omaha

LINCOLN, Neb. –&nbsp;&nbsp;A staff member at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) sustained serious* injuries in an inmate assault today.&nbsp;Two inmates attacked the staff member on the yard. The staff member was admitted to the hospital for treatment of injuries, which include a concussion, multiple broken bones and lacerations to the face.

Multiple staff responded to the assault and restrained the inmates. A responding staff member also sustained injuries. &nbsp;

“Violence toward staff members will not be tolerated,” said Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) Director Rob Jeffreys. “Those who choose to perpetrate these acts will be dealt with to the fullest of my authority.”

NDCS deployed SERVES members to support NSP staff. SERVES is an NDCS special team that delivers resilience-promoting interventions to staff members and their families prior to, during and following a critical incident.&nbsp;

An investigation of the incident has been launched. Findings will be provided to the county attorney for determination of criminal prosecution. The NDCS disciplinary process will be utilized with sanctions such as loss of good time, applied according to the rules and regulations.

*Assaults with serious injury:&nbsp;A serious injury requires urgent and immediate medical treatment and restricts the person’s usual activity. Medical treatment should be more extensive than mere first aid, such as the application of bandages to wounds. It might include stitches, use of Dermabond or other topical adhesive, setting of broken bones, treatment of concussion, loss of consciousness, etc.

NSP Staff Members Injured in Assault

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska drivers will face higher penalties for speeding beginning Sept. 3, under a new law aimed at curbing a surge in extreme speeding across the state.

The measure, LB530, raises fines for speeding violations and authorizes the Nebraska Department of Transportation to impose temporary, reduced speed limits on interstates such as I-80 during poor weather, emergencies or traffic congestion.

Under the new law, fines will increase as follows:
— 1–5 mph over the limit: $50 (up from $10)
— 6–9 mph over: $75 (up from $25)
— 10–14 mph over: $125 (up from $75)
— 15–19 mph over: $200 (up from $125)
— 20–34 mph over: $300 (up from $200)
— 35 mph or more over: $400 (up from $300)

The law also classifies driving at more than twice the posted speed limit as reckless driving, which carries additional penalties.

Nebraska to raise speeding fines

ALLIANCE, Neb. – Box Butte County RSVP will be collecting items to deliver care packages for the City’s First Responders. Some items needed include protein-rich snacks, gum, sunscreen, ChapStick, hand sanitizer, candy, tissues and drink packets with electrolytes and/or caffeine.

Donations can be dropped off at the Senior Center at any time, or call (308) 762-1293 to schedule a time on September 9 and 10 for a volunteer to pick the items up. RSVP will be collecting donations through September 10. Care packages will be put together and distributed on September 11.

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;– Today, Governor Jim Pillen thanked Nebraska Supreme Court Justice Lindsey Miller-Lerman for her longstanding public service. In her letter to the Governor, Miller-Lerman said she intends to retire, effective October 31.

Miller-Lerman, who was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1998 said, “It has been a privilege to serve the citizens of Nebraska as an appellate judge since 1992.” Miller-Lerman was the first woman appointed to the Nebraska Supreme Court. Prior to that, she was among the first justices appointed to the Nebraska Court of Appeals.

The Judicial Nominating Commission for the Supreme Court’s Second District will solicit the names of potential nominees to be presented to Gov. Pillen for consideration of appointment. That district consists of Douglas County.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Flags to Fly at Half-Staff to Honor Victims of Minneapolis Tragedy

It takes just one spark to ignite a wildfire. With several harvest seasons opening Sept. 1, including dove, grouse and archery deer, hunters are reminded to act responsibly in the field and to do their part to prevent wildfires.

Though drought conditions have been reduced in eastern and central Nebraska due to recent rains, most of the western third of the state remains dry. Most of the Panhandle is experiencing moderate drought conditions, according to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln drought monitor.

Driving vehicles or parking on dry, tall grass is a primary threat. Grass can ignite within seconds of contacting a hot surface, such as a vehicle’s exhaust and catalytic converter systems.

With that in mind, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission urges hunters to take the following precautions to avoid the risk of wildfire:

Panhandle police activity, Aug. 20 - Aug. 26

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. – The Nebraska State Fair is in full swing, filling the grounds at Fonner Park in Grand Island with the familiar sights, sounds and activities that bring hundreds of thousands of people together each summer.

It’s a tradition that dates back generations. And for many attendees, including Courtney Glock, it’s the best time of the year.

A Grand Island native, Glock fondly recalls her family’s annual trips to the State Fair in Lincoln, where the event was held through 2009. Those weekends were the highlight of her summer, the kind of experiences that shaped her childhood and created memories she still treasures.

“I’ve always loved the State Fair,” she said. “We went every year. It was a tradition for us. We would go to Lincoln and make a full day or weekend of it. Most of the time we didn’t leave the state for a summer vacation – it was the State Fair.”

Today, Glock doesn’t just attend the State Fair. She’s one of the people responsible for bringing it to life.

The University of Nebraska at Kearney graduate is in her second year as marketing director for the Nebraska State Fair, overseeing everything from billboards, commercials and social media content to the theme and signage that set the tone each year. It’s a role she once declared as her dream job during a classroom exercise at UNK.

“I remember telling (senior lecturer) Michelle Widger, ‘I want to be the marketing director at the Nebraska State Fair.’ I had no idea what that entailed, but I loved the State Fair so much that I knew it’s what I wanted to do,” she recalled with a smile.

Her path to that position started more than a decade ago, when she was still a student at Northwest Public Schools.

With the State Fair now located in Grand Island, Glock was able to volunteer on “Planting Day,” helping prepare the grounds for visitors, as well as during cleanup events. That led to seasonal work scanning tickets at the gates, a job she enjoyed because it put her face-to-face with the people who came to experience the fair.

“I’ve always been a people person, so I loved the idea of getting to welcome people to the fair,” she said. “It felt like Disney. I got to see all of these kids coming through the gates. They’re so excited and they have stars in their eyes, and I got to be the first person to greet them. I thought that was the coolest thing.”

By the time Glock arrived at UNK – the same school her mother, brother and sister attended – her love for the fair was already part of her identity. She majored in advertising and public relations with a minor in marketing, joined the Ad/PR Club, worked at the Child Development Center on campus and spent time on the staff at The Antelope student newspaper.

She found a strong sense of belonging in the close-knit program.

“I immediately felt so connected to my professors, even in my freshman-level classes,” Glock said. “If I had a question, I could go directly to them. If I had an issue with an assignment, they were willing to work with me. If I didn’t understand something, they were willing to stay late to help me understand it. I don’t think you get that level of support at every school.”

“I’m so grateful for the experience that I had at UNK in the ad/PR program,” she added. “I felt incredibly well-rounded when I got out of school. I’m a huge advocate for hiring any ad/PR student who comes out of UNK because I believe the professors get you ready to enter the workforce.”

Glock completed an internship with the Grand Island Area Chamber of Commerce before graduating in 2018. Just three days into that role, she was offered a full-time marketing and communications position that kept her with the chamber for more than six years. She rose through the ranks quickly, eventually becoming the youngest vice president in the chamber’s history at age 25.

During her time with the chamber, Glock led the Young Professionals program, assisted with community initiatives, presented in front of the city council and testified before the Nebraska Legislature.

“It was seriously instrumental to my success,” she said. “Working at the chamber of commerce pushed me outside my comfort zone and probably prepared me the best for stepping into a role like this where you have things being fired at you at all times and you have to be able to pivot, keep your composure and keep working toward your goal.”

The chamber also gave her another way to stay connected to the State Fair. Glock spent five years coordinating the roughly 900 people who volunteer at the event each year, including some UNK students.

“That truly got my foot in door,” she said. “Getting to coordinate 900 different personalities was incredibly difficult, but it taught me a lot about communication, organization and how important relationships are.”

She laughs about the time someone gave her a nameplate that read “chaos coordinator,” but the experience gave her a deeper appreciation for the people who make the fair possible.

“I thought I loved the fair before, but I loved it so much more after serving as volunteer coordinator,” Glock said. “That showed me how connected Nebraska really is.”

Her leadership and community involvement didn’t go unnoticed. In 2023, she was named Young Professional of the Year at the Inspire Awards, and she received the Community Involvement and Impact Award from Connecting Young Nebraskans. She was also honored as the Nebraska State Fair’s grand marshal.

The accolades reflect her commitment to giving back. Glock jokes that her only hobby is volunteering.

“I love to give back to my community, to be involved and to be part of the success,” she said. “I love central Nebraska and all that we have to offer. I think we are underrated. Any chance I can get to improve central Nebraska as a whole, I’m all about it.”

Currently, Glock is part of the Grand Island Young Professionals program, Connecting Young Nebraskans and International Association of Fairs and Expos. She’s vice president of the Northwest Education Foundation Board, chair of the GRACE Cancer Foundation Board, a wish granter for Make-A-Wish and a steering committee member and Leadership Cluster coordinator for SkillsUSA.

When Glock was asked to join the Nebraska State Fair staff in June 2024, she had to say yes.

“I couldn’t pass up the opportunity,” she said. “I think I was made for this position in a sense, and I’m glad that door opened for me.”

It’s a year-round job that keeps her on her toes. Working with other staff members and an outside agency, Glock oversees all the advertising and promotional materials for the State Fair, from logos, apparel, signage and graphics to commercials, social media campaigns, website design and email blasts. She also coordinates media coverage and event promotions during the fair’s 11-day run, which ends each year on Labor Day.

“I don’t like to sit still. And I don’t like to be bored,” she said with a laugh. “I’m not sure I can say I’ve been bored since I started working at the State Fair. There’s so much that changes with technology and new ways of thinking and doing things. I’m constantly looking for improvement in every area.”

This year’s theme – Showcase Your Fair Face – was designed to highlight the emotions the event evokes. Glock describes the pride of a child winning a purple ribbon, the determination of a young exhibitor entering the show ring for the first time, the thrill of a carnival ride and the joy of a vendor greeting a returning customer.

What she loves most are the stories behind it all – the 95-year-old exhibitor, the man who grew the state’s largest pumpkin, the 300,000-plus people who come together to make the fair a one-of-a-kind experience.

“Every Nebraskan who is out here at the State Fair has a story to tell that relates them back to our state, back to agriculture and tradition and heritage,” said Glock, who delights in sharing those stories on social media, with reporters and in conversations on the fairgrounds.

“When the State Fair comes to life on this campus, there’s so much magic that unfolds. As soon as you smell a funnel cake and the sun is shining down and you hear the State Fair slogan over the loudspeaker, it just triggers all of your senses. I feel like the people specifically make it what it is. And I feel like that’s true about our state, too.”

As she helps shape the future of the fair, Glock hasn’t forgotten where her journey began. She remains a proud UNK alumna, mentoring current students who intern or work at the fair.

“It’s the best feeling,” she said. “Getting to work alongside and mentor students for years to come is going to be one of the most special parts of what I do here.”

And when she passes another Loper on the fairgrounds, there’s always time to “throw the Lopes” – a small reminder that her path from UNK to the Nebraska State Fair was no accident. It was, in many ways, meant to be.

 </figure>GRAND ISLAND, Neb. – The Nebraska State Fair is in full swing, filling the grounds at Fonner Park in Grand Island with the familiar sights, sounds and activities that bring hundreds of thousands of people together each summer.It’s a tradition that dates back generations. And for many attendees, including Courtney Glock, it’s the best time of the year.A Grand Island native, Glock fondly recalls her family’s annual trips to the State Fair in Lincoln, where the event was held through 2009. Those weekends were the highlight of her summer, the kind of experiences that shaped her childhood and created memories she still treasures.“I’ve always loved the State Fair,” she said. “We went every year. It was a tradition for us. We would go to Lincoln and make a full day or weekend of it. Most of the time we didn’t leave the state for a summer vacation – it was the State Fair.”Today, Glock doesn’t just attend the State Fair. She’s one of the people responsible for bringing it to life.The University of Nebraska at Kearney graduate is in her second year as marketing director for the Nebraska State Fair, overseeing everything from billboards, commercials and social media content to the theme and signage that set the tone each year. It’s a role she once declared as her dream job during a classroom exercise at UNK.“I remember telling (senior lecturer) Michelle Widger, ‘I want to be the marketing director at the Nebraska State Fair.’ I had no idea what that entailed, but I loved the State Fair so much that I knew it’s what I wanted to do,” she recalled with a smile.Building a Career in Grand Island<figure>

 </figure>Her path to that position started more than a decade ago, when she was still a student at Northwest Public Schools.With the State Fair now located in Grand Island, Glock was able to volunteer on “Planting Day,” helping prepare the grounds for visitors, as well as during cleanup events. That led to seasonal work scanning tickets at the gates, a job she enjoyed because it put her face-to-face with the people who came to experience the fair.“I’ve always been a people person, so I loved the idea of getting to welcome people to the fair,” she said. “It felt like Disney. I got to see all of these kids coming through the gates. They’re so excited and they have stars in their eyes, and I got to be the first person to greet them. I thought that was the coolest thing.”By the time Glock arrived at UNK – the same school her mother, brother and sister attended – her love for the fair was already part of her identity. She majored in advertising and public relations with a minor in marketing, joined the Ad/PR Club, worked at the Child Development Center on campus and spent time on the staff at The Antelope student newspaper.She found a strong sense of belonging in the close-knit program.“I immediately felt so connected to my professors, even in my freshman-level classes,” Glock said. “If I had a question, I could go directly to them. If I had an issue with an assignment, they were willing to work with me. If I didn’t understand something, they were willing to stay late to help me understand it. I don’t think you get that level of support at every school.”“I’m so grateful for the experience that I had at UNK in the ad/PR program,” she added. “I felt incredibly well-rounded when I got out of school. I’m a huge advocate for hiring any ad/PR student who comes out of UNK because I believe the professors get you ready to enter the workforce.”Glock completed an internship with the Grand Island Area Chamber of Commerce before graduating in 2018. Just three days into that role, she was offered a full-time marketing and communications position that kept her with the chamber for more than six years. She rose through the ranks quickly, eventually becoming the youngest vice president in the chamber’s history at age 25.<figure>

 </figure>During her time with the chamber, Glock led the Young Professionals program, assisted with community initiatives, presented in front of the city council and testified before the Nebraska Legislature.“It was seriously instrumental to my success,” she said. “Working at the chamber of commerce pushed me outside my comfort zone and probably prepared me the best for stepping into a role like this where you have things being fired at you at all times and you have to be able to pivot, keep your composure and keep working toward your goal.”The chamber also gave her another way to stay connected to the State Fair. Glock spent five years coordinating the roughly 900 people who volunteer at the event each year, including some UNK students.“That truly got my foot in door,” she said. “Getting to coordinate 900 different personalities was incredibly difficult, but it taught me a lot about communication, organization and how important relationships are.”She laughs about the time someone gave her a nameplate that read “chaos coordinator,” but the experience gave her a deeper appreciation for the people who make the fair possible.“I thought I loved the fair before, but I loved it so much more after serving as volunteer coordinator,” Glock said. “That showed me how connected Nebraska really is.”Her leadership and community involvement didn’t go unnoticed. In 2023, she was named Young Professional of the Year at the Inspire Awards, and she received the Community Involvement and Impact Award from Connecting Young Nebraskans. She was also honored as the Nebraska State Fair’s grand marshal.The accolades reflect her commitment to giving back. Glock jokes that her only hobby is volunteering.“I love to give back to my community, to be involved and to be part of the success,” she said. “I love central Nebraska and all that we have to offer. I think we are underrated. Any chance I can get to improve central Nebraska as a whole, I’m all about it.”Currently, Glock is part of the Grand Island Young Professionals program, Connecting Young Nebraskans and International Association of Fairs and Expos.  </figure>When Glock was asked to join the Nebraska State Fair staff in June 2024, she had to say yes.“I couldn’t pass up the opportunity,” she said. “I think I was made for this position in a sense, and I’m glad that door opened for me.”It’s a year-round job that keeps her on her toes. Working with other staff members and an outside agency, Glock oversees all the advertising and promotional materials for the State Fair, from logos, apparel, signage and graphics to commercials, social media campaigns, website design and email blasts. She also coordinates media coverage and event promotions during the fair’s 11-day run, which ends each year on Labor Day.“I don’t like to sit still. And I don’t like to be bored,” she said with a laugh. “I’m not sure I can say I’ve been bored since I started working at the State Fair. There’s so much that changes with technology and new ways of thinking and doing things. UNK grad Courtney Glock comes Full Circle at the Nebraska State Fair

OMAHA, Neb.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol, with assistance from the Omaha Police Department, have arrested two people after a pursuit in Omaha early Wednesday.

At approximately 12:45 a.m. today, a trooper saw a Volkswagen Passat speeding on Highway 75 just north of downtown Omaha. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the driver accelerated and fled northbound. The trooper pursued for a short distance until OPD’s Able 1 helicopter got overhead and took over the pursuit from the air.

Able 1 tracked the vehicle for approximately 50 minutes as the driver continued driving recklessly, nearly colliding with other vehicles. The vehicle traveled between Nebraska and Iowa multiple times before a trooper was able to successfully deploy stop sticks on Interstate 480 near 14th&nbsp;Street. The vehicle came to a stop. The driver fled on foot, but he was quickly taken into custody by additional troopers and OPD officers. A passenger remained with the vehicle.

The driver, Anthony Chase, 22-years-old, of Bellevue, was arrested for obstructing a peace officer, willful reckless driving, and flight to avoid arrest. The passenger, Mason Trevillion, 22-years-old, of Omaha, was arrested on an outstanding warrant.&nbsp; Both were lodged in Douglas County Jail.

Two Arrested After Pursuit in Omaha

CHADRON, Neb. – With new leadership and realigned responsibilities, Chadron State College’s Admissions team is preparing to connect with students in more personal and meaningful ways. Dr. Derry Ebert, vice president for enrollment management, said the changes are designed to better serve prospective students across western Nebraska and beyond.

“Our Admissions team will connect more with western Nebraska and spend time at high schools,” Ebert said. “That may be at a college fair, a high school football or basketball game, or a high school theatre performance. Wherever we can find a way to serve our schools and connect with prospective students, we will be there. We want to share why we feel CSC is a great place to begin a new journey.”

Among the counselors focused on high school students is Carlie McPeak of Dunning, Nebraska, a CSC alum with a degree in sports and recreation management. Raised on a ranch with a graduating class of only six, McPeak said she values CSC’s small class sizes and personal connections.

“I’m excited to get to know students as they take their next steps in education,” she said.

Jackson Leuenberger of Cook, Nebraska, also a CSC graduate, majored in rangeland management with an option in livestock management. While on campus, he helped launch three student clubs and said he appreciates CSC’s welcoming community.

“College is a great time to make both personal and professional connections,” he said.

Mackenzie “Kennie” Gabel of Gering, Nebraska, earned a communications degree with a minor in journalism. As a former CSC cheerleader, she said she sees the campus as more than a place to earn a degree.

“We strive to make CSC a place for everyone to call home,” Gabel said.&nbsp;

Sandra Arlt of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, will work with students interested in transferring. Arlt has degrees from Western Nebraska Community College and CSC in social work and psychological sciences. As a first-generation student, she said she knows the value of a supportive campus community.

“I’m excited to meet students and support them on their journey to CSC,” she said.

Erin Orn will focus on recruiting athletes. She is a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a degree in sociology and criminology of law. She said she loves the campus size and welcoming community.

“Come visit campus and take advantage of the close-knit community,” Orn said. “Get involved, and don’t be afraid to ask for help.”

Sam McKinley of Colorado Springs, Colorado, is a CSC alum who will focus on graduate students and helping students interested in RHOP, RLOP and RBLI. He is a former CSC football player and coaching assistant. He said the genuine, welcoming spirit of campus is valuable.

“The smaller class sizes create more meaningful connections with staff and other students,” he said.

Gabi Perez-Patterson of Sioux City, Iowa, is a bilingual CSC alum who majored in family and consumer sciences with a minor in exercise science, who will work with adult students. She said the community makes the college unique.

“Whether it’s on campus or out in the community, the people of Chadron are welcoming and friendly,” she said.

Perez-Patterson encourages students to visit campus, either in person or virtually, to see what CSC offers.

Work Will Begin on I-80, District 5 Girder Repair

CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State College recently completed a reorganization of Crites Hall offices during the summer to improve efficiency and strengthen services for its students.

Dean of Students Austen Stephens said the reconfiguration was approached with the goal of creating a more holistic layout that better supports departmental needs. Crites Hall is typically the first building on campus potential students visit and the facility accommodates Enrollment Management, which includes Admissions and Financial Aid, the Business Office, Housing and Residence Life, Institutional Effectiveness, Student Affairs, which includes Health Services, Counseling, Title IX, and Campus Security, College Relations, ROTC, and START.

“Crites Hall serves so many functions,” Stephens said. “The changes were undertaken to enhance operational efficiency, customer service to students, and to bring offices within closer proximity to their departments.”

Several key areas were relocated during the reorganization. Campus Security has relocated from the Maintenance Building to the Garden Level South, while the College Relations offices are now situated on the Garden Level. Health Services and Counseling shifted to the third-floor center lobby to provide a more accessible space for students seeking support.

The Vice President for Enrollment and Admissions processing office relocated to the third-floor south wing, and the Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management and Admissions Counselors moved into individual offices on the second floor.

The Business Office expanded into Room 118 on the north wing of the main floor.

The Visit Center in the main lobby welcomes prospective students and their families, and the space has been designated as a reservable conference room through Microsoft Outlook.

Stephens said the reorganized layout should provide lasting benefits.

“Our intent was to make Crites Hall easier to navigate while giving departments the space they need to operate effectively,” he said. “We believe these moves will improve both day-to-day operations and the student experience.”

Crites Hall, formerly named Men’s Hall, opened on campus in Oct. 1938. The building is named after former Chadron attorney and Normal School Board member Edwin Crites, who laid the cornerstone of the building.

Health Services and Counseling shifted to the third-floor center lobby to provide a more accessible space for students seeking support.The Vice President for Enrollment and Admissions processing office relocated to the third-floor south wing, and the Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management and Admissions Counselors moved into individual offices on the second floor.The Business Office expanded into Room 118 on the north wing of the main floor.The Visit Center in the main lobby welcomes prospective students and their families, and the space has been designated as a reservable conference room through Microsoft Outlook.Stephens said the reorganized layout should provide lasting benefits.“Our intent was to make Crites Hall easier to navigate while giving departments the space they need to operate effectively,” he said. “We believe these moves will improve both day-to-day operations and the student experience.”Crites Hall, formerly named Men’s Hall, opened on campus in Oct. 1938. The building is named after former Chadron attorney and Normal School Board member Edwin Crites, who laid the cornerstone of the building.

ALLIANCE, Neb. – The Alliance Police Department will host its next Community Forum on Thursday, Sept. 11th at the Knight Museum located at 908 Yellowstone Ave. Topics for discussion will include Code Enforcement and Parking Enforcement.

Citizens are encouraged to attend and ask questions, get clarification on enforcement procedures and engage with city staff. City leaders will be present at the forum including Alliance Police Department personnel, Code Enforcement personnel, and other city staff. Members of council have also been invited to be a part of the discussion.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. and is scheduled for one hour. Light refreshments will be provided.

Alliance Police Department to Host Community Forum in September

On Monday, Aug. 25, 2025 at 4:15 a.m., the Chadron Police Department was called to the area of Fourth Street and Pine Street for a motor vehicle accident. Upon arrival, Officers located a pickup truck in a field south of Fourth Street that had struck a metal structure/pole style barn. The pickup was present at the accident scene, with nobody around.

The officers began their investigation and it was learned the pickup had been stolen earlier in the morning between 1:24 a.m. and 2:24 a.m. from a residence located on the 800 block of King Street. Damage to the pickup was estimated to be approximately $20,000. Damage to the metal structure/pole barn was estimated to be approximately $5,000.

Another accident was later reported on the 500 block of King Street, where it was learned that the stolen vehicle had struck a parked vehicle, likely near the time it was stolen. The parked vehicle received approximately $1,500 in damage to the driver’s side. Additionally, the Chadron Police Department received numerous reports of vehicle break-ins and a couple thefts from within vehicles that happened over the night.

Officers began canvasing the area and using images from home surveillance systems provided by the public to assist in identifying the suspects. As a result, two juvenile males were located that became suspects in the theft of the motor vehicle. Both juveniles had been consuming alcoholic beverages at the time of the officer’s contact with them. The juveniles admitted to “car jumping” which was explained as going parked car to parked car to see what they could find inside and eventually both juveniles admitted involvement in stealing the stolen pickup and driving it around.

As a result, a 16-year-old juvenile was placed into custody for Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Minor in Possession of Alcohol, Criminal Mischief, and Failure to Report an Accident and a 15-year-old juvenile was placed into custody for Accessory to a Felony and Minor in Possession of Alcohol. Both Juveniles were provided court dates for the offenses and released back to their custodial guardians.

We would like to remind our community members of some things everyone can do to assist in deterrence of vehicle break-ins and vehicle thefts. Lock all doors to your vehicle; never leave the keys to the vehicle in the vehicle when unattended; do not leave valuables in your vehicle, especially in plain sight; try to park in well-lit areas and if you have a car alarm, make sure it is activated. If you see someone acting suspicious and looking into vehicles or around them, call law enforcement to come check it out.

Report of an Accident Leads to Recovery of Stolen Vehicle in Chadron

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.&nbsp;ー&nbsp;Meridian students are starting the school year with a brand-new playground designed to be safer, more inclusive and full of opportunities for fun. Completed over the summer, the playground renovation was made possible through the hard work of Educational Service Unit 13’s (ESU 13) facilities and maintenance crew, the support of community partners and the dedication of employees.

“Meridian is a Level Three program, which means we serve students with significant and complex support needs,” said Jessica Broderick, Director of Special Education. “This playground was designed to give every student—regardless of mobility or sensory needs—a safe, accessible place to play, learn and grow. We know that play is learning, and this project ensures those opportunities are available to all of our students.”

The project included the installation of new equipment, safety-focused features and turf inlays with interactive designs that encourage movement and play. Specialized structures also provide opportunities for students of all abilities to enjoy the space together.

“This was truly a team effort,” Jessica added. “From the planning to the installation, so many people played a part in making this playground a reality.”

A special thanks goes to ESU 13’s Facilities &amp; Maintenance Crew, whose dedication and behind-the-scenes work ensured the project was completed on time and ready for students’ return. ESU 13 also thanks its Board of Education for their unwavering support, Administrator Dr. Laura Barrett for her leadership (and even a little hands-on installation help), and the many ESU 13 staff and volunteers who pitched in with demolition, assembly, and support throughout the summer.

In addition, ESU 13 extends its gratitude to Bluffs Tree Service and 5 S Lawn Care for their in-kind donations of equipment use, which were critical in bringing the project to completion.

Meridian Students Celebrate New Playground Designed for Safety, Accessibility and Fun

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;- With the harvest season soon to get underway, the Nebraska Public Service Commission (PSC) encourages producers/sellers to familiarize themselves with Nebraska Grain laws.

“Part of a successful harvest for producers/sellers is making sure their assets are protected. Understanding the law and how it affects them plays a key role in that process.” said Terri Fritz, PSC Grain Department Director.

Under the Grain Dealer Act, if producers/sellers want to ensure their transactions with a licensed grain dealer are covered by the grain dealer’s security posted with the PSC, they must demand payment within 15 days of completion of their contract with the dealer. Producers/sellers who choose not to demand payment within 15 days after completion of their contract will be unsecured creditors of that dealer and forfeit any protection from the grain dealer’s security.

Director Fritz said, “It’s important for the producer/seller to understand that it is the irresponsibility to demand payment within a set timeframe to ensure they are covered.”

Grain Warehouse operators are also reminded by the PSC of the Emergency Storage Policy. In order to store grain on the ground, an Emergency Storage application form must be filed with, and approved by, the Commission.

CHADRON, Neb. – New faculty members have joined Chadron State College this fall. Individuals in the School of Business, Mathematics and Science are Dr. Karla Abshire, John Atsu-Swanzy, Dr. M'bark Baddouh, Ruizhu “Rachel” Dai, Dr. Stephen Forsha, Dr. Diya Ganguly, Dr. Amir Manzoor and Dr. William Soto. New faculty in the School of Liberal Arts are Brian Grob, Rachel McKinley and Dr. Jessica Meyers. New faculty in the School of Professional and Applied are Brett Greenwald and Jazlyn Reitz.

New faculty in the School of Business, Mathematics and Science include the following.

Abshire earned a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Creighton University. She said she is looking forward to a busy and exciting year. Her areas of specialty include geriatric physical therapy and modified exercise routines for people with disabilities.

She will teach Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Human Anatomy, Human Physiology and Advanced Human Anatomy.

Baddouh earned a doctorate and a master’s from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a bachelor’s degree from Ibn Zohr University in Agadir, Morocco. He conducted his doctoral research in Wyoming and has taught a geology field camp in the Black Hills since 2017.

Baddouh, who helped lead a Natural History Hike in Chadron State Park during move-in week, said he finds the geology of the region amazing. His areas of specialty include geology and geochemistry of ancient lakes.

Courses he will teach include Physical Geology, Environmental Geology, Earth Science and College Chemistry.

Atsu-Swanzy, who has an All But Dissertation (ABD) status in a doctoral degree in Education Studies from National University, will teach Mathematics for Teachers. He earned a Master of Philosophy in Education Studies in Mathematics from the University of Cambridge in England, a master’s in mathematics and a master’s in math education from Rowan University in New Jersey and a bachelor’s in mathematics from Thomas Edison State University. He has a New Jersey Teacher of Mathematics K-12 Certification.

His areas of interest include Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics and learning and academic achievement in the context of stress and academic burnout.

Atsu-Swanzy said he is interested in study abroad programs, and eager to serve and engage with students and partner with regional K-12 teachers.

He earned a master’s and doctorate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a bachelor’s from Ibn Zohr University in Agadir, Morocco. He looks forward to living close to where he conducted his doctoral research in Wyoming and the Black Hills where he has been teaching geology field camp since 2017. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Courses he will teach include Physical Geology, Environmental Geology, Earth Science, and College Chemistry.

Dai earned an MBA with an accounting concentration from Texas A&amp;M in Corpus Christi. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

She said she joined CSC because she would be able to teach while continuing her doctoral studies.

“The college and Business Academy demonstrated impressive growth potential. The environment is supportive and relaxed, with nice, caring, and friendly supervisors and colleagues. I’m excited to be part of its continued progress,” she said.

She will teach Business Ethics, Leadership, Organizational Behavior, Corporate Social Responsibility, Accounting I and II, and Business/Economic Statistics.

Forsha earned a doctorate in Management from Webster University, an MBA from William Woods University, a post-graduate degree in Gaelic Literature from the University College Cork, and a bachelor’s from Northern Michigan University.

He is looking forward to teaching at a rural college with profession-focused business programs that value interdisciplinary collaboration. His areas of specialty include moral decision making, leadership, and Gaelic literature.

He will teach Management, Leadership, and Introduction to Business.

Ganguly earned a doctorate in Agricultural Economics from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, and a master’s and a bachelor’s in economics from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India.

His areas of specialty include moral decision making, leadership, and Gaelic literature.He will teach Management, Leadership, and Introduction to Business.Ganguly earned a doctorate in Agricultural Economics from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, and a master’s and a bachelor’s in economics from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India.She said joining the CSC faculty allows her to expand her teaching portfolio and have a meaningful voice in program and curriculum development.She said her research is at the intersection of behavioral economics, environmental policy, and climate change. Her work explores how people make conservation decisions, respond to environmental risks like PFAS contamination, and trade off individual and group welfare in resource allocation.She will teach Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Agricultural Policy, and Managerial Economics.Manzoor earned four degrees in Pakistan: a doctorate in Management Sciences from Bahria University, an MBA from Lahore University of Management Sciences, a master’s in information technology from Preston Institute of Management Sciences and Technology, and a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering from NED University of Engineering and Technology.He said he was drawn to CSC’s commitment to developing knowledgeable and engaged leaders.“[CSC’s] focus on excellence in teaching, applied scholarship, and service aligns perfectly with my passion for blending industry experience with academic teaching to prepare students for real-world success,” he said. “I look forward to collaborating with colleagues, mentoring students, and creating impactful learning experiences that connect academic theory with real-world application, particularly in the rapidly evolving fields of AI, data science, and business analytics.”His areas of specialty and research include artificial intelligence, data science, business analytics, project management, cybersecurity, information systems, and technology adoption. He has published books, journal articles, and case studies on these topics, with a focus on integrating emerging technologies into business strategy and education.The courses he will teach include Web Page Development, Principles of Information Systems, and Business Programming.Soto earned a doctorate in biology from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces and a bachelor’s in biology from California State University, Fresno.Soto, who said he loves the Pine Ridge area, has training in host-microbe interactions, microbiology, immunology, epidemiology, invertebrate biology, evolutionary ecology, evolutionary biology, cell biology, molecular biology, and human physiology.He will teach Host-microbe Interactions, Human Diseases, Immunology, and Microbiology.Alongside the additions in Business, Mathematics, and Science, the college also welcomes several new faculty members in the School of Liberal Arts.Grob earned a Master of Fine Arts in Acting Pedagogy from the University of Idaho and a bachelor’s in Theatre Performance from Utah Valley University. I'm excited for the opportunity to help build and expand the Theatre program,” he said.He will teach Performance, Acting Pedagogy, Acting for Film, Scriptwriting and Screenwriting, Principles of Acting, First Year Experience, and Theatre Practicum.McKinley earned a bachelor’s in English Language and Literature from Spring Arbor University and an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.She said she was looking for an open-enrollment institution that cares about students, and a team of faculty members invested in teaching and collaboration.“As soon as I set foot on the CSC campus, I was hooked,” she said. “From the faculty members, to Dean Margetts, to the inquisitive students, everyone I met was genuinely curious and caring in a way I haven't seen for a long time in education. I knew right away that I wanted to be a part of the CSC community.”Her specialties are English education and creative nonfiction, and she is particularly interested in writing about family and confessional writing.Courses she will teach include Technical Writing, Creative Writing, Advanced Poetics, Digital Composition, and Teaching Methods for English Education.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Meyers joined the CSC faculty in January 2025. She earned a Juris Doctorate from University of Nebraska, and a bachelor’s in history from Colorado State University.After working in the criminal justice system for eight years, she wanted to pivot to educating and inspiring the next actors in the system. Her areas of specialty include criminal and indigent defense and trial advocacy.She will teach Criminal Law, Introduction to Law, First Year Inquiry, Victimology, Criminal Procedures, Introduction to Criminal Justice, and Senior Seminar.In addition to the Liberal Arts, the School of Professional and Applied Studies has welcomed new faculty who bring expertise in education and community engagement.Greenwald earned a Master of Education from the University of Nevada in Las Vegas and a bachelor’s from the University of California in Berkeley.Greenwald said he joined CSC because he loved the campus, the faculty, and small-town atmosphere.He specializes in behavior management and functional skills with research experience in racial proportionality in early childhood Special Education.Greenwald will teach Literature and Language Arts Programs in Early Childhood, Adolescent Development, Guidance Techniques in Human Relations, and Program Development and Management.Chadron native Reitz completed both of her degrees at CSC, a bachelor's in elementary education with a concentration in early childhood, and a master's in education administration.“Joining the faculty allows me to give back to my alma mater and my community by helping to instruct, support, and shape the next generation of teachers. I enjoy working with students of all ages, supporting teachers, and understanding the ways in which administration contributes to a school’s success,” she said. “I am eager to help students discover their passion and love for teaching. My goal is to provide them with a strong foundation to become positive, influential educators, while continuing to grow and learn as an educator myself.”She is enrolled in a doctoral program in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Elementary Education.Reitz will teach Introduction to Teaching, Language, Culture, and Literacy, and Intermediate Reading/Writing.
