LINCOLN, Neb. - The Nebraska Public Service Commission (PSC) Transportation Department will have a visible enforcement presence during the 2025 Nebraska State Fair (August 22-Sept. 1) to help protect the public from unlicensed, uninsured, or unsafe passenger carriers.

“Our presence at the State Fair ensures competition for compliant businesses and protects riders from unlicensed operators who may not carry adequate insurance or meet Nebraska’s safety standards,” said Commissioner Kevin Stocker, PSC Vice-Chair.

Fairgoers are encouraged to use only properly licensed transportation providers. In Nebraska, anyone providing transportation services in exchange for money must have PSC authority (with the exception of Uber &amp; Lyft). The PSC authority requires that carriers meet state safety and insurance requirements. Approved carriers will have a Transportation Authority number on the side of their vehicles and a PSC license plate affixed below the Nebraska DMV plate.

PSC investigators will be working in coordination with State Fair officials, local law enforcement and the Nebraska State Patrol to ensure compliance. Entities that do not have authority from the Commission or carriers that are in non-compliance with the Commission risk citations, fines and possible removal from the event.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will conduct its annual grouse wing collection during the upcoming upland season starting Sept. 1.

Hunters in the zone east of U.S. Highway 81 already are required to send in wings, but hunters in the zone west of the highway also are encouraged to participate.

Hunters in the east zone are required to have a “special grouse permit” prior to hunting, in addition to a hunt permit and habitat stamp. This special grouse permit is free, but availability is limited to 400 overall and one per hunter. Requests for this permit are accepted in person at the Game and Parks headquarters in Lincoln, by phone at 402-471-5431, by mail or by email at&nbsp;<a href="mailto:ngpc.eastzonegrouse@nebraska.gov" target="_blank">ngpc.eastzonegrouse@nebraska.gov</a>.

East zone hunters will be issued a hunt diary to record their hunting efforts, as well as wing envelopes to send in a wing from each harvested grouse.

Those hunting in the west zone who are interested in participating will be sent postage paid envelopes for wings to be submitted. Requests can be made to Bryan O’Connor, Game and Parks’ upland game program manager, at&nbsp;<a href="mailto:bryan.oconnor@nebraska.gov" target="_blank">bryan.oconnor@nebraska.gov</a>&nbsp;or 308-293-0102.

A wildlife biologist will age each wing submitted to determine the ratio of juvenile to adult birds harvested; this information helps determine how successful grouse reproduction was for the current year.

NGPC Send in Grouse Wings to Help Wildlife Management

CHADRON, Neb. – On Tuesday, August 12, 2025, U.S. Senator Deb Fischer visited Northwest Community Action Partnership’s (NCAP) Early Head Start and Head Start Centers in Chadron to spotlight the critical role these programs play in supporting young children and their families.

During her visit, Senator Fischer met with educators, staff, parents and children to observe the classroom environment and discuss how federal support empowers local early childhood education efforts. NCAP staff emphasized the importance of these programs in providing foundational educational opportunities for children from low-income families, helping them build early literacy, social-emotional skills and school readiness.

“Head Start and Early Head Start programs are more than educational initiatives—they're lifelines for families,” NCAP CEO Brooke Smith said. “Investing in early childhood care ensures our kids have a stronger start and our communities thrive.”

Eagle Media Wins Two Pinnacle Awards at Nebraska Broadcasters Association Event

OGALLALA, Neb. (Aug. 18, 2025) — The body of an adult man was recovered Monday at Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area following a search that began the previous evening, officials said.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission said conservation officers received a report around 7:53 p.m. Sunday of an overturned kayak found near the Lemoyne Bay boat ramp. The kayak was empty, and no one had been reported missing in the area as of 5 p.m. Monday.

Conservation officers, along with Keystone Lemoyne Fire and Rescue and the Keith County Sheriff’s Office, searched the water using sonar until dark Sunday. Crews resumed operations Monday after a morning storm moved through the area.

The man’s body was recovered about 1:05 p.m. Mountain time by the Keystone Lemoyne Fire and Rescue dive team.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death and help identify the victim. Authorities said the incident remains under investigation and no further information will be released until the man’s identity is confirmed and family members are notified.

Representing more than a century of artistic creativity at the University of Nebraska, the exhibition features artwork by former and current professors. Composed of paintings, sculptures, prints and photographs, the exhibition gives insight into the evolution of the work of these professors and the influence living in Nebraska had on them.

Nebraska’s Legacy features work by early UNL professors, including Cora Parker and Dwight Kirch, as well as current faculty members, Francisco Souto, Aaron Holz and Dana Fritz.

Sheldon Statewide started in 1987 with the purpose of sharing items from the collection of the Sheldon Museum of Art with the people of Nebraska. The show will visit eight venues across the state.

To meet management objectives, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will begin stocking more than 150,000 10-inch channel catfish into over 180 water bodies across the state.

These catfish stockings, beginning in late August and continuing into September, will take place in city ponds and rural reservoirs, giving anglers of all ages additional chances to reel in this popular sport fish.

Matthew&nbsp;Perrion, Game and Parks’ fish production supervisor, said this annual effort is designed to bolster fishing opportunities in numerous public waters where natural recruitment may be limited due to habitat constraints or predation.

“Nebraska’s fisheries management includes a large stocking program to maintain and enhance angling resources, particularly when natural reproduction falls short,” Perrion said.

“Historically, Game and Parks’ Fisheries Division has stocked ‘advanced fingerling’ channel catfish – typically around 9 to 10 inches – as larger fish are better equipped to avoid predators and thrive in their new environments. By stocking the catfish across a wide array of waters, the division aims to bolster Nebraska’s fishing opportunities and offer family‑friendly opportunities statewide.”

These catfish are well‑prepared for stocking; they were raised from fry at the North Platte State Fish Hatchery beginning in June 2024, overwintered, and then split between the Calamus State Fish Hatchery and the North Platte State Fish Hatchery facility ponds for additional space and further growth.

LINCOLN, Neb. –&nbsp;An inmate who went missing from the Community Corrections Center – Lincoln (CCC-L) has been arrested by the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office.&nbsp;Alexander Gouge #213689&nbsp;was taken into custody on August 17, 2025, and booked into the Dakota County Jail in Dakota City, Nebraska.

Gouge went missing on August 14, 2025, when he did not return to CCC-L from a job seek furlough. He started his sentence on August 31, 2021. Gouge was sentenced to 10 to 15 years out of Lancaster County for refusing to submit to a test/5th&nbsp;offense.&nbsp;

CCC-L is one of two community custody facilities operated by NDCS. Community custody is the lowest custody level and the least restrictive facility. Inmates are allowed to participate in work opportunities, attend school and religious services with prior approval and without direct supervision.

The fatalities came from 15 separate crashes. Among the 11 vehicle occupants who died, five were not wearing seatbelts, two were buckled in, and seatbelt use was unknown for four others.

Eight of the deaths happened in rural areas, including two on the interstate and six on other highways. Eight others were on local roads. The toll also included three pedestrians, two motorcyclists and two all-terrain vehicle riders.

The July total marks a decline from a year earlier, when 24 people died on Nebraska roads. So far in 2025, 117 people have died in 107 crashes between January and July, a 25% drop from the same stretch of 2024, when 146 people were killed in 131 crashes.

Seatbelt use continues to be a major factor: of the 94 vehicle occupants killed this year, just 35 were wearing one, the DOT said.

The data, compiled by the agency’s Highway Safety Section, is current as of Aug. 14.

Nebraska sees fewer traffic fatalities compared to last July

LINCOLN, Neb. — The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) and the Pillen administration hosted a signing ceremony on Friday, August 15 to honor the 2025 recipients of the Good Life, Great Journey Scholarship program.&nbsp;

Now in its second year, the scholarship program helps recipients on their way to a meaningful and impactful career. Those selected for the scholarship receive up to 100% paid tuition, books, fees, tools, housing expenses, travel reimbursement and a paid internship with NDOT. Recipients are enrolled in approved technical colleges across the state to study programs including Diesel Technology, Electronics Systems/Electrical Technology, Land Surveying/GIS, Drafting/Design Technology, Engineering (Associate's Degree) and Information Technology. Upon successful completion, individuals will be eligible for full-time employment with NDOT.&nbsp;

The scholarship program is made possible by 504(e) funds from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The 504(e) funding is used to support surface transportation workforce development, training and education activities. In 2025, NDOT received $110,000 in funding for the scholarship program, and $100,000 in 2024.&nbsp;

“Keeping our kids in Nebraska to grow their careers is a top priority,” Governor Jim Pillen, said.

“Kids are our future, and programs like this are crucial in recruiting from our own backyard, while providing them with the tools to be successful and creating opportunities for them to positively impact their communities.” &nbsp;

2025 City-Wide Clean Up in Alliance

OMAHA, Neb. –&nbsp;An inmate who went missing from the Community Corrections Center – Omaha (CCC-O) has been arrested by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.&nbsp;Dustin Debusk #215668&nbsp;was taken into custody on August 13, 2025, and booked into the Douglas County Correctional Center.

Debusk went missing on June 8, 2025, when he did not return to CCC-O from a religious furlough. He started his sentence on October 18, 2022. Debusk was sentenced to zero to nine years out of Douglas County for theft and operation of a motor vehicle to avoid arrest.&nbsp;

CCC-O is one of two community custody facilities operated by NDCS. Community custody is the lowest custody level and the least restrictive facility. Inmates are allowed to participate in work opportunities, attend school and religious services with prior approval and without direct supervision.

Missing Omaha Inmate Arrested by Douglas County Sheriff's Office

ALLIANCE, Neb. — Three people were injured in a motor vehicle crash in Alliance early Thursday evening, police said.

On Thursday, August 14th, at approximately 4:08 p.m., the Alliance Police Department received a 911 report of a motor vehicle accident with possible injuries at the intersection of 3rd Street and Laramie Avenue.

Responding officers arrived to find three vehicles involved. Two severely injured adults were located inside a red Jeep. The driver was slumped over, not breathing and had only a faint pulse. Officers quickly removed him from the vehicle, placed him on the roadway, and initiated life-saving measures, including CPR and the use of an AED. The Alliance Fire Department arrived shortly thereafter and assumed medical care.

The Jeep’s passenger sustained serious leg injuries and possible additional trauma. Officers applied a tourniquet to control severe bleeding before AFD personnel took over treatment.

A second vehicle, a white Chevrolet Silverado, had sustained heavy front-end damage. The driver suffered leg injuries from the head-on collision with the Jeep.

A third vehicle, a white GMC Yukon, was struck when the force of the initial impact pushed the Silverado backward into it. All occupants of the Yukon declined medical treatment.

Preliminary investigation and witness statements indicate that the Jeep was traveling westbound on 3rd Street from Laramie Avenue when the driver experienced a medical emergency, causing the vehicle to cross the center line into the path of the eastbound Chevrolet Silverado. The impact pushed the Silverado into the GMC Yukon.

The driver of the Jeep was transported to the hospital in critical condition. The Jeep’s passenger and the Silverado’s driver were transported in non-critical condition.

The Nebraska State Patrol conducted a full traffic reconstruction at the scene. The Alliance Police Department is handling the primary investigation. The annual Governor’s Summit, co-hosted by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development (DED) and the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA), convenes the state’s economic development community to discuss shared strategies to grow Nebraska. This year’s event featured breakout tracks on manufacturing, workforce development, agriculture and the emerging bioeconomy.

The inaugural Youth Summit facilitated one-on-one interactions between high school students and business, college and military leaders. Throughout the day, employers and educators presented student attendees with internship, scholarship and job offers in Nebraska.

“Our state’s family farms and multi-generational manufacturers can compete with anybody, anywhere,” said Gov. Pillen.

“Today was all about connecting youth to the great careers being created by our homegrown businesses. The message to our kids is clear: you can achieve your dreams here in the Good Life.”

Husker football coach Matt Rhule kicked off Thursday’s activities with keynote remarks. He was then joined by current Cornhuskers—and Nebraska natives—Derek Branch (Lincoln), Heinrich Haarberg (Kearney), Carter Nelson (Ainsworth), and Luke Lindenmeyer (Papillion) for a special session of the Youth Summit. Speaking to student attendees, the Husker players shared why they’ve chosen to spend their college careers in Nebraska.

Gov. Pillen moderated a lunchtime panel of state agency directors.&nbsp;The panelists spotlighted system improvements within state government that are resulting in better outcomes and savings for Nebraskans. The lunch session also featured guest speaker Stephen Vaden, deputy secretary of USDA. He provided an update on the Trump Administration’s work to advance American agriculture and grow the ag economy.

The Governor’s Summit concluded with an afternoon plenary session headlined by Eric Gehringer, Executive VP of Operations for Union Pacific (UP). He highlighted the company’s work to become America’s first transcontinental railroad and detailed UP’s commitment to Nebraska, which dates back more than 160 years.

Lincoln, NE&nbsp;—&nbsp;The state has issued a health alert for Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB), also known as toxic blue-green algae, at Bluestem Lake in Lancaster County, Nebraska, for the second week.

Samples taken earlier this week at Bluestem Lake measure above the threshold of eight parts per billion (ppb) of total microcystin, which is a toxin released by certain strains of blue-green algae.

When a health alert is issued, signs are posted to advise the public to use caution and designated swimming beaches are closed during the alert. Recreational boating and fishing are permitted, but the public is advised to use caution and avoid exposure to the water, particularly by avoiding any activity that could lead to swallowing the water. Do not let pets get in the water or drink from the lake. People can still use the public areas for camping, picnics, and other outdoor activities.

Weekly sampling has been conducted at 56 public lake sites since the first week of May. The lakes will continue to be monitored weekly through the end of September. Hemingford to Host 4th Annual 60’s Night Aug. 15

LINCOLN, Neb. –&nbsp;Authorities have been notified about an inmate missing from the Community Corrections Center – Lincoln (CCC-L).&nbsp;Alexander Gouge #213689&nbsp;did not return to the facility from a job seek furlough today. His electronic monitor was found near 31st&nbsp;and Q Street in Lincoln.

Gouge started his sentence on August 31, 2021. He was sentenced to 10 to 15 years out of Lancaster County for refusing to submit to a test/5th&nbsp;offense. He has a parole hearing scheduled in September 2025 and a tentative release date of February 11, 2028.

Gouge&nbsp;is a 38-year-old male, 5-foot-8, 185 lbs. with brown eyes and black hair. Anyone with&nbsp;knowledge of his whereabouts is asked to contact local authorities or the Nebraska State Patrol.

Box Butte Development Corp. Welcomes New ED, Enedina “Dina” Airada

LINCOLN, Neb. — From small towns to major cities, the Nebraska Infrastructure Hub has spent the last year connecting communities to federal dollars, making more infrastructure projects possible. This month, the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is celebrating the first anniversary of the IHub. Launched in August of 2024, the IHub is the state’s first-ever intergovernmental entity focused on empowering state and local public agencies in competing for federal discretionary grants.

The IHub is a response to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) of 2021, also known as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). The IIJA introduced unprecedented federal discretionary funding opportunities, but local agencies often found that applying for grants can be complicated to navigate.

For the last year, the IHub has served as a one stop shop for local and state agencies, providing resources and guidance to make receiving federal discretionary funds more attainable to meet infrastructure needs across the state. The IHub offers several key components including a Grant Pairing Portal and a Project Development Support Team to help guide agencies through the application process as well as grant management.

“One of the biggest hurdles that we heard from our local public agencies was their lack of discretionary grant knowledge. Whether that was applying for them or managing the projects, it was a huge need for Nebraska,” Jodi Gibson, NDOT Local Assistance Division Manager, said.

In addition, the IHub has engaged with representatives from all 93 Nebraska counties since its launch, team members traveled nearly 5,700 miles to meet with 286 stakeholders in 15 counties and provided more than 160 hours of direct assistance.

This crucial work has not gone unnoticed. In July, NDOT brought home two regional awards from the 2025 America's Transportation Awards competition for the Western Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (WASHTO) region. The IHub won the award for "Quality of Life and Community Development."

“I'm very excited that we now have a year underneath our belt of the Infrastructure Hub. We've learned a lot, and we now know how to better help our local agencies. I'm excited for what the future holds,” Gibson said.
