Following the parade, a short program and the traditional Burning of the A will take place at Bulldog Stadium.&nbsp; Anyone interested in participating in the parade, please contact AHS for an entry form.</li><li>Football Game – At 7:00 pm on Friday, October 17, the Bulldogs will take on Sidney in the Homecoming football game.</li><li>Homecoming Dance – Alliance High School students will wrap up the week with the Homecoming Dance on Saturday, October 18 from 8:00–11:00 p.m. in the AHS Commons.</li>

Nebraska NetFest Volleyball & Pickleball Final Deadlines Approaching

LINCOLN, Neb. – Today, Governor Pillen joined leadership from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and South Central Behavioral Services (SCBS) to recognize the inaugural seven Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHC) as an initiative to enhance access to the highest standard of behavioral health care in Nebraska.

“Progress is possible when we collaborate and move toward one common goal – building a better Nebraska. The CCBHCs are the next innovative step in providing all Nebraskans with high quality and integrated behavioral healthcare appropriate to their needs,” said Governor Pillen. &nbsp;

The seven inaugural providers in Nebraska who successfully completed the certification program are:

“Over the past several months, we have partnered with seven providers to adjust their operations to the CCBHC model. Now, a clinic can steady their focus on delivering quality care and the breadth of services to fit each patient’s unique needs,” said Dr. Thomas Janousek, Director of the Division of Behavioral Health. “The CCBHC model reduces administrative barriers for providers. Ultimately, this results in better care for Nebraskans as the provider has more flexibility to address treatment needs. We are truly excited to work with such great partners to develop this program in Nebraska.”

CCBHCs offer Nebraska communities a comprehensive approach to support physical and behavioral health services. Services offered by CCBHCs include:

“This new model is a true improvement for the Medicaid system in Nebraska. By restructuring reimbursement through the CCBHC framework, we are not only helping Nebraskans access the right care at the right time, but we are also allowing providers to participate in a payment structure that better reflects all resources used to deliver those services,” said Drew Gonshorowski, Director of the Division of Medicaid and Long-Term Care.

Since April 2024, the DHHS Division of Medicaid and Long-Term Care and the DHHS Division of Behavioral Health have worked with these seven providers to develop the services and programs necessary to meet state requirements and federal criteria determined by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Programs will begin operation in January 2026.

“Standing up CCBHCs in Nebraska is truly an agency-wide achievement. By working in concert, rather than in silos, DHHS team members collaborated with excellence to deliver and set the highest quality standards of care for Nebraska communities,” said Steve Corsi, CEO of DHHS.

Today’s news conference was hosted by SCBS in Hastings, an organization offering mental health and substance use services for adults, children, and families. Prior to the recognition, Gov. Pillen, CEO Corsi, Dr. Janousek and Dir. Gonshorowski received a tour of the facility.

“As a rural behavioral health provider in Nebraska, I am thrilled to have this opportunity. SCBS has significantly expanded access to care in Central Nebraska. Having the support of Governor Pillen and the guidance from DHHS has been extremely beneficial in structuring our operation to be more effective and efficient,” said Bob Shueey, CEO of SCBS. “As a Hastings native, I can say this is a transformational change for the community. Our doors are open to all who need help.”

In May 2023, Governor Jim Pillen signed LB 276, the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic Act, which launched the implementation of CCBHCs throughout Nebraska. This initiative is an effort to increase access to services, enable providers to incorporate evidence-based practices and further establish care coordination.

CCBHCs emerged from the Excellence in Mental Health Act, a federal law signed in 2014 to improve the nation’s mental health system. The CCBHC model ensures that clinics are providing a wide array of services, such as crisis response, medication management, psychotherapy, community support and peer support. In return, providers are allowed to participate in a re-structured payment model that better accounts for costs associated with services.&nbsp;

Gov. Pillen Recognizes First Nebraska Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics System

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp; — The first three home Saturdays of the Husker football season have come and gone, and Nebraska State Troopers were on patrol to keep fans safe on the way to and from Lincoln.

Troopers throughout Nebraska made 30 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol on the first three home gamedays of the season. Six of those arrests occurred in Lancaster County in the hours surrounding a Husker football game. During the first month of home games last season, troopers made 35 DUI arrests, including 10 DUI arrests in Lancaster County.

“Gameday safety is absolutely a team effort, and it starts on the road to the game,” said Colonel Bryan Waugh, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “The vast majority of fans followed the safety game plan and drove sober. If alcohol is part of your gameday experience, use the off week to make the adjustment to designate a sober driver or make another plan to get home without driving impaired.”

This effort was made possible thanks in part to grant funding from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office. In addition to patrolling the roads, troopers assist gameday security operations alongside the UNL Police Department, Lincoln Police Department, Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, and other partners.

The team is off this weekend, but the Huskers will be back at home against Michigan State on October 4.

With deer season underway, hunters are encouraged to use safe handling procedures when harvesting, transporting or disposing of a deer or elk carcass to minimize the potential spread of chronic wasting disease.

CWD is a fatal neurodegenerative disease that can be unintentionally transmitted from CWD-positive carcasses that are moved from the harvest location and not handled or disposed of appropriately.

Research shows the misfolded proteins, or prions, that cause CWD can linger in the soil, making elimination or reduction of spread to new areas vitally important. For that reason and when possible, unwanted parts of the animal should be disposed of in landfills.

For that reason and when possible, unwanted parts of the animal should be disposed of in landfills.Hunters also should adhere to the following guidance to protect themselves and other wildlife:<ul>
 <li>Do not shoot, handle or consume any animal that is acting abnormally or appears to be sick, and avoid consuming meat from any animal that tests positive for CWD.</li><li>Avoid consuming the brain, spinal cord, eyes, spleen, tonsils or lymph nodes of harvested animals. Normal field dressing coupled with the boning out of a carcass will remove most, if not all, of these body parts. Cutting away all fatty tissue will remove remaining lymph nodes.</li><li>When processing, don’t saw through bone, avoid cutting through the brain or spinal column, and minimize the handling of brain and spinal tissues. Wear protective gear, such as disposable gloves.</li><li>Knives, cutting boards, and other items used for processing should be soaked for 5 minutes in a 50% solution of household bleach for decontamination. For this process to be effective, no tissue or organic matter can be present on materials.</li><li>Double bag all unwanted carcass parts prior to disposal at a landfill. If this option is not feasible, leave unwanted carcass parts at the harvest site.</li>

Governor Pillen Signs Proclamation Recognizing National Preparedness Month

GERING, Neb. —&nbsp;Weather permitting, Nebraska Highway 71 (N-71) and the truck parking area will be closed, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. The closure will occur during the day and is necessary to allow the contractor to perform pavement lifting over the Union Pacific Pacific Railroad (UPRR), northbound and southbound bridges.

The closure will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 30, and run until Wednesday, Oct. 2. A detour will be used starting at Interchange 20, taking traffic down Road 41E through town and back to N-71. There is a 13’-6” underpass on the route. Traffic coming south on N-71 will be detoured at Road 41E South to Interchange 20. There is a signed truck route along the detour for trucks over 13’-6” tall.

Gov. Pillen Honors 2025 Governor’s Wellness Award Recipients

LINCOLN, NE&nbsp;– Today, Governor Jim Pillen released a statement on the passing of former state senator and friend Lee Rupp. Rupp, who was born near Monroe, died Sept. 20 in Columbus. Following a career with Nebraska Game and Parks, he ran for and won the seat representing District 22. His term began in 1982. Rupp left the Legislature in 1989, becoming the director of government relations for the University of Nebraska.

“Lee had a significant influence on my life and my decision to serve the state,” said Gov. Pillen. “He was a huge supporter when I ran for Governor and I learned a lot from him as a result of his own experience in the Legislature. Lee had a passion for Nebraska. He enjoyed the outdoors, understood agriculture and was deeply committed to preserving our state’s natural resources. Lee was also a veteran and later served his community as a volunteer firefighter. I appreciated Lee’s counsel throughout the years and will greatly miss his friendship.”

Accurately sampling and testing hay is the only way to get a real understanding of the nutritive value of feed. Using values from previous years or a “book value” can be costly since a producer may incorrectly develop a feeding plan using inaccurate information. When sampling hay, getting a representative sample is a critical first step.

Samples must accurately represent the entire lot of hay. The UNL NebGuide “Sampling Feeds for Analyses" states that a “lot” of hay should be harvested from the same field consisting of similar types of plants, cutting dates, maturity, variety, weed contamination, type of harvest equipment, curing methods and storage conditions.

Hay samples should be taken using a hay probe or a core sampler. The hay probe should penetrate at least 12-18 inches into the bale and have an internal diameter of at least 3/8 of an inch. Avoid getting hay probes hot when using a drill to drive the probe into the bale, since friction from high speeds can heat the probe to a point where it damages the hay sample.

To get a representative hay sample from a “lot” of hay, select 15-20 bales in the lot. Once all the samples for a “lot” have been collected, the samples may need to be sub-sampled to get the feed down to a size that can be sent in for analysis. The UNL NebGuide “Sampling Feeds for Analyses” walks through a step-by-step process for this.

Once hay samples have been taken, store in a plastic sealed bag in a cool, dry place until the sample is ready to be submitted. Samples over 15 percent moisture should be frozen. Commercial labs provide an information submittal form that allows producers to select a standard feed test for forages.

Cattle feeds should be analyzed for moisture, protein and energy. Producers may also want to have forages tested for key minerals. When developing a ration for cattle or comparing feeds to one another, always utilize the nutrient analysis on a dry-matter basis. After formulating a ration on a dry-matter basis, the values can then be converted to an as-is basis using the moisture content of the feed to determine the actual amount of feed that should be fed to the cattle on an as-is basis.

In addition to moisture, protein, and energy, annual forages harvested for hay, such as foxtail millet, oats, sudan grass and sorghum-sudan hybrids, should be analyzed for nitrates. Test, Don’t Guess on Nutrient Value of Hay

KEARNEY, Neb. – The University of Nebraska at Kearney is once again recognized among the top universities in the region by U.S. News &amp; World Report, which released its latest&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/university-of-nebraska-at-kearney-2551" target="_blank">“Best Colleges” rankings</a>&nbsp;today.

For the 18th consecutive year, the publication ranked UNK as one of the best public regional universities in the Midwest. UNK is No. 8 on that list, marking the 11th time it’s been inside the top 10.

U.S. News &amp; World Report puts UNK at No. 24 among all Midwest regional universities – both public and private – the same position as last year. No school in Nebraska or the MIAA is ranked higher.

The university also ranked No. 6 for Best Value, No. 12 for Best Colleges for Veterans and No. 18 in Social Mobility.

“These rankings reaffirm UNK’s commitment to academic excellence, experiential learning and student success,” said Chancellor Neal Schnoor. “I am proud that the dedication and achievements of our faculty, staff and students have again been recognized at the national level.”

U.S. News &amp; World Report evaluated more than 1,700 colleges and universities using up to 17 measures of academic quality, including graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student debt and graduate success.

Jimmy Kimmel is back on the air, but viewers across western and central Nebraska won’t see him on their local ABC stations.

ABC brought Jimmy Kimmel Live! back Monday, less than a week after suspending the late-night show over controversy surrounding Kimmel’s remarks about conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The network said internal discussions led to the decision to reinstate the program.

But two of the nation’s largest station groups—Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcast Group—say they will continue to preempt the show on their ABC affiliates. Together, those companies own roughly one-quarter of ABC stations nationwide.

That includes Nebraska Television Network (NTV), which operates ABC affiliates KHGI in Kearney, KWNB in Hayes Center and their translators serving North Platte, Ogallala and much of western and central Nebraska. Sinclair owns the network, and as a result, Jimmy Kimmel Live! is being replaced with other programming on those stations.

The move means many Nebraska viewers, particularly in the western half of the state, won’t see Kimmel’s return on traditional broadcast. By contrast, Lincoln’s ABC affiliate, KLKN, is not owned by Sinclair and is expected to continue carrying the show as normal.

Nexstar and Sinclair both say their decisions stem from concerns over Kimmel’s recent remarks. Nexstar called them “ill-timed and insensitive,” while Sinclair said it wants a “formal dialogue” with ABC about promoting “constructive dialogue” in programming.

The dispute underscores the influence local affiliates hold over what reaches viewers, even when a network reinstates a show. Analysts warn the preemptions could affect ratings and advertising reach, especially in mid-sized markets.

Kimmel, one of late night’s longest-serving hosts, has not publicly addressed the suspension or the affiliate backlash. ABC has not said whether content guidelines will change moving forward.

For Nebraska fans in places like North Platte and Ogallala, that leaves few options outside of streaming or ABC’s digital platforms if they want to keep up with Kimmel’s return.

The Nebraska State Fair proudly announced the outstanding achievements of its 2025 Volunteer Program, highlighting the dedication and generosity of the individuals who help make the Fair possible. This year,&nbsp;803&nbsp;volunteers contributed an impressive&nbsp;16,009&nbsp;hours of service, underscoring the vital role that volunteers play in creating an memorable experience for fairgoers from across the state and beyond.

Of the total, 273 volunteers each contributed at least 20 hours of service, while 122 others put in more than 40 hours each.

Fair personnel say each of the 803 volunteers assisted in countless ways, from greeting guests at gates and on trams, to supporting specific events and activities like cupcake decorating or Kid’s Pedal Pull Championships and, across the board, ensuring smiles and answers were provided across the fairgrounds.

“The Nebraska State Fair simply would not be the same without our volunteers,” said Executive Director Jaime Parr. “Their pride, their hard work, and their generosity of sharing time and talents with us have a widespread and incredibly valuable impact on our staff, our state and our fair.”

The Nebraska State Fair Volunteer Program continues to be one of the cornerstones of the event, not only providing essential support but also embodying the community spirit that makes their fair unique.

“We haven’t always had this – I remember when the fair moved closer to Central Nebraska with virtually no volunteer program at all,” said Parr. “Most people don’t realize how well-known our volunteer program is in the fair industry; it’s one that other state fairs across the nation are incredibly envious of and it’s all because of our volunteers… Those ‘Can-Do’ minded individuals who come out and donate their time each year.”

As the Nebraska State Fair winds down another successful year, it does so with immense gratitude for its volunteers, whose commitment ensures that the Nebraska State Fair remains a place where traditions are formed and memories are made.

Nebraska State Fair Volunteer Program Celebrates Remarkable Contributions in 2025

ALLIANCE, Neb. – On Saturday, Sept. 20, 2025, the Alliance Police Department received a report from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) regarding allegations of child sexual abuse involving a local Alliance man.

Alliance Police officers, in coordination with DHHS, initiated a joint investigation into the suspected abuse of multiple children. Forensic interviews were conducted, and investigators established probable cause to issue three arrest warrants for 3rd Degree Sexual Assault of a Child.

As a result, TooFeathers Bueno (N/M, DOB: 06/15/1990) was taken into custody on Sept. 22, 2025 without incident. He is currently being held at the Box Butte County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

During the investigation, Bueno consented to a search of his cell phone. The device will undergo forensic examination by the Alliance Police Department as part of the ongoing case.

Heats will begin at 10 a.m. and continue every 30 minutes through 12:30 p.m., organized by grade level to ensure a fun and safe experience for all participants.

Panhandle police activity, Sept. 11 - Sept. 17

The Nebraska Department of Agriculture has received a report of a horse in the Panhandle that has contracted West Nile virus. Horses can become infected with the virus after being bitten by an infected mosquito; however, they cannot transmit West Nile virus to other horses or people after they contract the disease. While many horses can be exposed to the disease and not show symptoms, about 35 percent will become ill and will have to be potentially euthanized.

Horses that may be infected with West Nile virus may exhibit one or more symptoms that include:

-Weakness (hind end, front or back legs), incoordination

-Cranial nerve deficits (tongue weakness, difficulty swallowing)

There are four West Nile virus vaccines that are licensed through the United States Department of Agriculture to use on horses. If you have not vaccinated your horse or are unsure if your horse has been vaccinated, please contact your local veterinarian. Vaccines have been shown to be the best strategy to help prevent West Nile virus infection in horses.

So far this year, 124 mosquito surveillance samples have tested positive across the state, 50 of them in the Panhandle. In Scotts Bluff County, one sample also tested positive for St. Louis Encephalitis, another mosquito- borne disease. Statewide, 31 human cases of West Nile virus have been reported, including cases identified through blood donations. Of those, 13 cases were from the Panhandle.

Although surveillance efforts are taking place, Panhandle residents are urged to continue protecting themselves by following these prevention tips until the first freeze takes place:

-Applying mosquito repellent containing DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus;

-Wearing long-sleeved shirt, pants and socks;

-Avoiding going out at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active;

-Eliminating standing water to reduce mosquito breeding sites

-Keep window screens in good repair, and;

-Use larvicides that contain Bacillus thuringiensis in standing water that is not easily drainable.

Panhandle Horse Tests Positive for West Nile Virus

ALLIANCE, Neb.&nbsp;– The Alliance Police Department would like to remind motorists of the importance of obeying Nebraska school bus stop sign laws to ensure the safety of children traveling to and from school.

-When a school bus extends its stop sign and activates flashing lights on undivided roads, all drivers traveling in both directions must come to a complete stop.

-On divided roads, drivers traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop.

-Vehicles may not proceed until the stop sign is retracted and the lights are turned off.

Failing to comply with these laws is a serious offense that endangers children and may result in significant fines and other penalties.

“As many in the community know, I occasionally help cover school bus routes,” said Chief David Leavitt. “I see firsthand how dangerous it can be when drivers are distracted or fail to stop. Staying alert and following the law isn’t just about avoiding an expensive ticket—it can save a child’s life.”

The Alliance Police Department encourages all drivers to remain vigilant and to prioritize student safety whenever they encounter a school bus on the roadway.

CHADRON, Neb. – 12 young ladies from across the state came together on Saturday, Sept. 13 to compete in the Miss Chadron competition. Walking away with the title of Miss Chadron 2026 was Carlee Todd, daughter of James and Brittney Todd of Scottsbluff.

Desteny Miller, daughter of Cherry Wulf and Josh and Lisa Miller of Arapahoe was crowned Miss Northwest 2026 and Anna Meier, daughter of Julie and Justin Focken and the late Richard Meier of Gering, was crowned Miss Chadron’s Teen 2026. Anna was also awarded overall Teen Community Service.

The Miss Community Service award and the Miss audience choice award went to Nevaeh Laeger, daughter of Tim and Milinda Laeger of Minatare.

Miss Congeniality was awarded to Allisen Meek, daughter of Jennifer and Brett Cullan and David Meek of Hemingford, and Teen Miss Congeniality was awarded to Emma Jensen, daughter of Todd and Heather Jensen of North Platte.

Finally, Teen audience choice was awarded to Katie Fowler, daughter of Jenifer Fowler of North Platte.
