LINCOLN, Neb. — From small towns to major cities, the Nebraska Infrastructure Hub has spent the last year connecting communities to federal dollars, making more infrastructure projects possible. This month, the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is celebrating the first anniversary of the IHub. Launched in August of 2024, the IHub is the state’s first-ever intergovernmental entity focused on empowering state and local public agencies in competing for federal discretionary grants.

The IHub is a response to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) of 2021, also known as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). The IIJA introduced unprecedented federal discretionary funding opportunities, but local agencies often found that applying for grants can be complicated to navigate.

For the last year, the IHub has served as a one stop shop for local and state agencies, providing resources and guidance to make receiving federal discretionary funds more attainable to meet infrastructure needs across the state. The IHub offers several key components including a Grant Pairing Portal and a Project Development Support Team to help guide agencies through the application process as well as grant management.

“One of the biggest hurdles that we heard from our local public agencies was their lack of discretionary grant knowledge. Whether that was applying for them or managing the projects, it was a huge need for Nebraska,” Jodi Gibson, NDOT Local Assistance Division Manager, said.

In addition, the IHub has engaged with representatives from all 93 Nebraska counties since its launch, team members traveled nearly 5,700 miles to meet with 286 stakeholders in 15 counties and provided more than 160 hours of direct assistance.

This crucial work has not gone unnoticed. In July, NDOT brought home two regional awards from the 2025 America's Transportation Awards competition for the Western Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (WASHTO) region. The IHub won the award for "Quality of Life and Community Development."

“I'm very excited that we now have a year underneath our belt of the Infrastructure Hub. We've learned a lot, and we now know how to better help our local agencies. I'm excited for what the future holds,” Gibson said.

NDOT Infrastructure Hub Celebrates Helping Nebraska Communities Compete for Funds

The Chadron Police Department is announcing their participation in the upcoming Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Crackdown event early this fall, occurring between August 16 and September 1, 2025.

Impaired Driving is dangerous and carries with it many penalties, not the least of which could include fines, jail time, legal fees and license penalties. The Chadron Police Department encourages all members of the public to always find a sober driver and drink responsibly.

According to NHTSA, about 32 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes every day, which comes out to one person every 45 minutes. In 2020, 11,654 people in the US died from drunk driving crashes. Those deaths were all preventable, driving impaired is never permissible.

Between August 16 and September 1, 2025, the Chadron Police Department, through grant funds provided by the NDOT, will increase the number of officers patrolling at any given time. Increasing the number of officers on patrol will allow enhanced focus on searching for drunk and impaired drivers. Remember, drive sober or get pulled over.

The stage is set, the talent is top-notch, and the audience gets a say — Nebraska’s premier showcase for rising performers, the Galaxy of Stars® Talent Search, will hold its 2025 Finals on Saturday, August 30 at 4 p.m. on the ACP Park stage at the Nebraska State Fair.

This year, 29 individuals entered the Virtual Video Contest hosted by the Galaxy of Stars® and the Nebraska State Fair. In addition, local competitions at the Saline County Fair, Lincoln County Fair and Coyote Country in McCook sent their winners to the finals. The result: 14 finalists from the Virtual Video Contest and four from local events will take the stage in Grand Island.

People’s Choice voting is open now through Wednesday, August 20 at 11:59 p.m., giving fans across the state the chance to help choose one of the awards. Audiences at the finals can expect an exciting variety of performances, including dance and vocal acts from Nebraskans as young as six years old.

At the finals, each performer will receive a medal, with cash prizes and trophies awarded to the top three in each division. Special honors include the People’s Choice Award, Superstar Award, Shining Star Award and the coveted Mega Star Award for the highest-scoring performance overall. The Overall Vocalist will also receive a $4,500 Nashville Recording Package.

Nebraska State Fair Live Music Series Showcases 47 Nebraska Bands Across 54 Genres

LINCOLN, Neb. - The Nebraska Public Service Commission (PSC) reminds consumers that it will be holding virtual town hall meetings as part of the Black Hills Energy Rate case (<a href="https://psc.nebraska.gov/natural-gas/ng-124-black-hills-nebraska-gas-llc-dba-black-hills-energy-rate-case" target="_blank">NG-124</a>) application process. On May 1, Black Hills Energy filed an&nbsp;<a href="https://psc.nebraska.gov/sites/default/files/doc/NG-124%20Application.pdf" target="_blank">application</a>&nbsp;with the PSC seeking a $34.6 million general rate increase. The proposal will increase Black Hills’ fixed customer charges and distribution charges, the rates regulated by the Commission.

As part of the process, and to provide information and address questions regarding the potential rate increase, the Commission will hold three virtual town hall meetings. During the late-night hours of Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2025, Officer Deines conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle along the 400 block of Bordeaux Street for failing to dim high beam headlights and not having an operational low beam headlight.

During his contact with the driver of the motor vehicle, Officer Deines observed suspected drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle. Officer Deines called for K-9 Sukey and Handler Officer Orsborn to assist with the traffic stop. Officer Orsborn deployed K-9 Sukey, which then alerted to suspected narcotics being inside the vehicle. A search of the vehicle was conducted with officers locating approximately 7.9 grams of suspected methamphetamine.

As a result, the driver of the vehicle, 29-year-old Dean Hawley was placed under arrest for possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Hawley was transported to the Dawes County Jail and booked into custody. Bond was set at 10 percent of $20,000.

Dr. Rodney Romig Set to Join Alliance Public Schools Foundation Wall of Fame

Open Plains Transit (OPT), which serves most of western Nebraska with rural and intercity bus transportation extending into South Dakota and Wyoming, is honored to receive the South West Transit Association’s (SWTA) Annual Spotlight Award in the Hit the Spot – Electronic category for rural systems.

The winning entry, “Planting the Seeds of Collaboration!” was created to showcase the vital role public transportation plays in people’s lives, its impact on rural communities and how working together can spark regional change—especially in places like Cherry County, Nebraska.

“We were thrilled to win a Spotlight Award for our ‘little video’ with a big heart,” said Jonnie Kusek, Director of Transportation for OPT.

“I wanted to create a video that showed the heart of public transportation, so Valentine, NE—known locally as ‘Heart City’—was the perfect setting. Cherry County was a newer project we wanted to highlight, and October offered the perfect backdrop—beautiful colors, crisp air and a sense of freshness. We set out to show three things: the availability and connections of our service, how public transportation can boost rural economies and the power of partnerships.”

Kusek co-directed the video with Kate Littrel of White Shutter Media, who also served as videographer.

“Kate was an absolute trooper—seven months pregnant—this was her last shoot before having her baby, and I had her running between Cherry County, NE, and Rosebud, SD. We raced to capture as much footage as possible before we lost the light. Then the rain and sleet came, and we had to ground the drone. I’d worked with Kate on other Nebraska Panhandle projects, and she completely understood my vision for Cherry County.”

Carnival Wristbands, New Attractions at the 2025 Nebraska State Fair

A new boat ramp is about to open at one Sandhills lake near Hyannis, while another one will be temporarily closed.

Construction workers are nearing completion on the new boat ramp at Avocet Wildlife Management Area’s Beem Lake, and it is scheduled to open Aug. 21. On the same day the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will close all public access to nearby Frye Lake WMA so contractors can complete the new boat ramp there.

The new concrete ramps are being built on elevated peninsulas that extend into the lake, functional for varying water levels. While Frye is accessible until the closure date, visitors are being advised to take caution entering and exiting as workers have already begun hauling rock to the site. The project is expected to be completed this fall.

In addition to the ramps, both lakes are getting improved parking areas and docks compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. A new vault toilet is being installed at Frye.

Funding is provided through the Recreational Boating Safety grant program managed by the U.S. Coast Guard, with matching funds from the Game and Parks Game Cash Fund.

Summer fish kills, a natural phenomenon of fish dying off in large numbers during the summer months, often are caused by low dissolved oxygen levels in the water.

One major contributor to these events is a stretch of cloudy days following a stretch of warm sunny weather.

“Under normal conditions, aquatic plants and algae produce oxygen through photosynthesis using sunlight; however, when sunlight is blocked by clouds, oxygen production can drop quickly,” said Aaron Blank, a fisheries biologist for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

“Algal blooms can further complicate things as algae can die off much quicker than rooted aquatic vegetation and once they die their decomposition consumes oxygen.”

Fish kills are more prevalent in smaller bodies of water because of their limited volume and the potential for rapid oxygen depletion.&nbsp;Small, shallow ponds with abundant vegetation are particularly susceptible to summer fish kills.

Anglers who observe dead or dying fish should call their nearest Game and Parks office. In recognition of National Poll Worker Recruitment Day, Secretary of State Bob Evnen is encouraging Nebraskans to consider signing up to serve at the polls. National Poll Worker Recruitment Day is Aug. 12, 2025. Secretary Evnen is also marking the day by thanking Nebraska’s poll workers who take on the task of staffing Nebraska’s polls.

“Nebraska is continually recognized as a leader in election procedures and security, and that is due in large part to our county election officials and their poll workers,” said Secretary Evnen.

“We could not conduct our elections smoothly and independently without the work of thousands of Nebraskans who step up and serve their communities as poll workers.”

Nebraska has long been recognized as a leader in election administration. More than 9,000 Nebraskans are necessary to staff polling sites and county election offices for each election. While retired Nebraskans have historically made up the largest portion of the state’s poll workers, Secretary Evnen is urging young Nebraskans to take this opportunity to enhance their civic engagement by becoming a poll worker.

Poll workers are paid both for their training and for their service on Election Day. To serve, poll workers must be at least 16 years of age and, if 18 or older, registered to vote in their county. LINCOLN, Neb. – The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has sent out its sixth issuance of Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) benefits, starting today, August 12, 2025.

Throughout the 2025 Summer EBT period, households with eligible school-age children can receive assistance in buying groceries with the program’s second year of operation. A one-time payment of $120 will be issued for each eligible child, intended to cover the three summer months at $40 a month.

The sixth issuance was sent to eligible students as reported by school districts and any new eligibility determinations through public assistance benefits and Summer EBT applications.

Summer EBT cards will be mailed to eligible families using their registered address with DHHS or their child’s school. Once families receive the Summer EBT card, it must be activated using the instructions mailed with the card.

Eligible families will have 122 days, or four months, to use Summer EBT benefits. The 122-day count begins the day after benefits are issued. If benefits are not used within 122 days, funds will be returned to the federal government and cannot be reissued.

Nebraska DHHS Sends Out Sixth Issuance of S-EBT Payments

KEARNEY, Neb. — The Nebraska Sports Council has announced that registration is now open for the Nebraska NetFest Volleyball State Championships and the Nebraska NetFest Pickleball Singles and Mixed Doubles Championships.

Both events will take place at the brand-new Kearney Sportsplex in Kearney, Nebraska. The facility features dedicated, high-quality courts for both volleyball and pickleball, including up to 12 hardwood volleyball courts and 4 indoor pickleball courts. With expansive spectator seating, modern amenities, and a mezzanine-level walking track, the Sportsplex is built to deliver a top-tier experience for both athletes and fans.

In 2024, Nebraska NetFest Volleyball State Championships welcomed 53 teams across three divisions, while the Nebraska NetFest Pickleball Singles and Mixed Doubles Championships drew 93 participants across all divisions. Both events aim to grow in size and competition in 2025, with the goal of surpassing last year’s strong turnout.

The Nebraska NetFest Volleyball State Championships registration fees will increase on September 10, with final registration closing on October 3.

With something for every generation and interest — indoors and out, on stage and in the dirt — this year’s Nebraska State Fair ticketed lineup includes concerts, comedy, motorsports, and wild bull action.

“We’ve put together a lineup of events that truly reflects the spirit of the State Fair,” said Karli Schulz, Entertainment and Events Director for the Nebraska State Fair. “There’s something for every Nebraskan to Showcase Your Fair Face.”

Among the highlights of the concert lineup are comedian Brian Regan and the nostalgic act Forever Young.

“Fans have long asked for a comedian back inside the Heartland Events Center,” said Courtney Glock, Marketing Director for the Nebraska State Fair. “And Brian Regan is a hilarious, family-friendly choice to lead the way.”

Forever Young is headlined by Vanilla Ice and features a collection of other 1990s and 2000s pop sensations, including Chris Kirkpatrick of *NSYNC.

“We expect to see all ages of pop fans singing along to favorites like ‘Ice, Ice Baby’ and ‘Bye, Bye, Bye’ — among many others,” Schulz said.

Another highlight is the newest addition to the motorsports lineup: Crossroads Chaos.

“Crossroads Chaos features drivers racing around a figure-eight-shaped track attempting to avoid collision at the intersection point,” Schulz said. “The name ‘Chaos’ seems incredibly fitting for the Twisted Chrome series.”

Advance tickets remain available for all events at the 2025 Nebraska State Fair.

Tickets Remain for All 2025 Nebraska State Fair Events

On Aug. 1, 2025, at approximately 9:14 p.m. the communications center received an automated message of an accident with airbag deployment at the intersection of the South Beltline Highway and 21st&nbsp;Avenue.&nbsp;

Investigation revealed that the vehicle was northbound on 21st&nbsp;Avenue and left the roadway to the east, traveling through the intersection, colliding with a ditch embankment and coming to rest on the railroad tracks.

James Murray, 57-years-old, of Scottsbluff was the sole occupant and registered owner of the vehicle.&nbsp; Murray was transported to the hospital by Regional West Ambulance, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Due to his injuries, Deputies cited Murray for DUI in lieu of arrest.

Scottsbluff PD officers were the first to arrive and assisted with the investigation and traffic control.&nbsp;&nbsp; The Scottsbluff Rural Fire Department also assisted at the scene.&nbsp;

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) continues its emergency response plan following extensive roof damage to two housing units at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP).

The storm impacted two dormitory-style housing units at NSP, which housed 387 incarcerated individuals. Staff moved 250 individuals to the gym and other available housing at NSP. The remaining 137 individuals were relocated to gyms at the Omaha Correctional Center and the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution.

Nebraska Dept. of Correctional Services Continues Storm Damage Response

On August 8, 2025, at approximately 6:44 p.m., Alliance Police Officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Laramie Avenue for a report of an assault.

The victim, Alliance Assistant Fire Chief Bradley Schrum, reported that he observed a male and female walking northbound on Cheyenne Avenue near the Alliance Fire Hall. The male was seen discharging a fire extinguisher in the driveway and on the sidewalk outside the Fire Hall. When Assistant Chief Schrum confronted the individuals in the 600 block of Laramie Avenue, the male approached the driver’s side of his pickup and discharged the fire extinguisher directly into his face. The discharge caused temporary breathing difficulty, eye irritation, and left residue inside the vehicle.

Officers located the individuals a short time later in the area. The male, identified as Fred John Red Nest, 46-years-old, of Alliance, refused multiple lawful commands to stop and was taken into custody with the assistance of additional officers. The female was identified as Jennifer Jensen, 47-years-old, of Alliance.

Fred John Red Nest was transported to the Box Butte County Jail and booked on felony assault and additional charges. The case has been forwarded to the Box Butte County Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

The Alliance Police Department appreciates the cooperation and the assistance of the Alliance Fire Department during this incident.

Arrest Made After Felony Assault on Alliance Assistant Fire Chief

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;- Today, Governor Jim Pillen appointed Chawnta Durham of North Platte as district court judge in the 11th&nbsp;Judicial District. That district includes Arthur, Chase, Dawson, Dundy, Frontier, Furnas, Gosper, Hayes, Hitchcock, Hooker, Keith, Lincoln, Logan, McPherson, Perkins, Red Willow and Thomas counties.

Since 2023, Durham has operated her own law practice, focused on family, criminal and immigration law. She previously worked at Lindemeier Law Office and was a deputy public defender and deputy county attorney in Lincoln County.

Durham continues to serve her community and the legal profession through a variety of positions including as chairperson of the Mental Health Board for the 11th&nbsp;Judicial District and mock trial events organized within local schools.

Durham received her undergraduate degree from Union College in Lincoln. She earned a juris doctor at the University of Nebraska College of Law.

Durham fills the vacancy due to the resignation of Judge Matthew D. Neher.
