LEMOYNE, NE — Mark Cohen, a former Air Force Judge Advocate, Lemoyne resident, and karate instructor in Ogallala, has launched an exploratory committee to consider an independent campaign for Nebraska’s 3rd Congressional District against U.S. Rep. Adrian Smith.

Cohen says his potential candidacy stems from deep frustration with the current political climate.

“I love my country, and I’m fed up with a two-party system that forces voters to choose between extremists,” Cohen said. “It rewards politicians for using simplistic labels that pit neighbor against neighbor.”

A former Democrat, Cohen left the party three years ago.

“I left for two reasons,” he explained. “First, I lived in a small town for many years, and I got tired of people in big cities trying to set policy for rural areas on issues like firearms. Second, some Democratic leaders have largely abandoned moderates because extremists and interest groups dominate the agenda and the funding.”

Cohen is equally critical of today’s Republican leadership.

“Today’s Republican leaders are not conservatives,” he said. “They call themselves fiscal conservatives, but they cut taxes for the rich and balloon the deficit for our children. They claim to be patriots but do little to counter Russian aggression. They say they believe in limited government yet want to regulate almost everything at the federal level now that they’re in power.”

Cohen believes voters in rural Nebraska are more independent and more thoughtful than national politicians and the media often assume.

“Voters of Nebraska’s 3rd District know not all Democrats are socialists and not all Republicans are fascists,” Cohen said. “They yearn for a plain-speaking populist — a Harry Truman.”

Cohen first came to Nebraska in 1983 when the Air Force assigned him to Offutt Air Force Base. While on active duty, he also served as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney for Nebraska. After leaving active duty, Cohen practiced law in Omaha for eight years, representing an

agricultural lender during the farm crisis of the late 1980s. He later earned an advanced law degree (LL.M.) in agricultural law from the University of Arkansas, where he also served as an adjunct faculty member. He also served on the Colorado Combative Sports Commission (formerly the Colorado Boxing Commission) for three years.

“Running for Congress is not something I take lightly,” Cohen said. “I know the enormity of the challenge and the importance of preparing for a fight. Over the past few months, I’ve spoken with many Nebraskans and listened to their concerns. My exploratory committee will continue those conversations and help determine the most effective path forward to serve rural Nebraskans and move beyond the divisive, ineffective climate the two parties have created.”

Leonard Yellow Horse Set for Appearance at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.&nbsp;- Educational Service Unit 13 (ESU 13) has been awarded $880,000 for the first two years of the Comprehensive Literacy State Development (CLSD) Grant. Additional funding projected to bring the total investment to as much as $2.2 million over five years, pending continued availability of funds.

This investment addresses challenges unique to rural western Nebraska by delivering teacher training, coaching and high-quality literacy materials to schools that often struggle with limited resources and vast geographic distances. Many educators in our region work in isolation—sometimes as the only teacher at their grade level—with few chances for collaboration. Long travel times also make professional development difficult to access. The CLSD grant serves as a vital bridge, ensuring that even the most remote schools can benefit from the same evidence-based resources and support available to larger districts.

In total, the grant will support 10 districts, 13 schools, more than 200 teachers and over 3,000 students across the Panhandle.

Literacy is foundational to all learning. By equipping educators with structured literacy strategies grounded in the Science of Reading, ESU 13 fosters consistent expectations for reading and writing, promotes skill transfer and strengthens critical thinking. Teachers and instructional leaders will also collaborate to apply these strategies in ways that best meet the needs of their students, ensuring both engagement and long-term academic success.

“Early Literacy has been my passion since my first job as a kindergarten teacher almost thirty years ago,” said Deirdre Amundsen, Director of Professional Learning at ESU 13. “This funding allows our team to provide intentional, relevant training to teachers directly tied to their district’s reading materials. The most exciting part is that teachers can apply the strategies learned with the students in their classrooms immediately.”

Meeting Literacy Goals Across All Grade Levels

Participating districts included in the ESU 13 award are Alliance, Banner County, Bayard, Garden County, Gering, Gordon-Rushville, Minatare, Mitchell, Morrill and Sidney. (Scottsbluff Public Schools received a separate CLSD award of $1.29 million over five years.)

Each district will develop a comprehensive literacy plan and convene leadership teams to guide local efforts. Teachers will engage in professional learning grounded in the Science of Reading, including:

ESU 13 Awarded Up to $2.2 Million to Boost Literacy in the Panhandle

LINCOLN, Neb. —&nbsp;The state of Nebraska has issued a health alert for Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB), also known as toxic blue-green algae, at Cub Creek Lake in Jefferson County.

Bluestem Lake in Lancaster County has been removed from health alert after being on alert last week.

Samples taken earlier this week at the lakes on alert measure above the threshold of eight parts per billion (ppb) of total microcystin, which is a toxin released by certain strains of blue-green algae.

When a health alert is issued, signs are posted to advise the public to use caution, and designated swimming beaches are closed during the alert. Recreational boating and fishing are permitted, but the public is advised to use caution and avoid exposure to the water, particularly by avoiding any activity that could lead to swallowing the water. Do not let pets get in the water or drink from the lake. People can still use the public areas for camping, picnics, and other outdoor activities.

Weekly sampling has been conducted at 56 public lake sites since the first week of May. The lakes will continue to be monitored weekly through the end of September. Health Alert Issued for Cub Creek Lake

FREMONT, Neb. — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) Carrier Enforcement Division conducted local commercial vehicle inspections on Wednesday in Dodge County.

During this effort, the Metropolitan Aggressive and Prevention Selective (MAPS) Team conducted 28 vehicle inspections. Troopers discovered 74 violations of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and state law. Troopers placed 9 vehicles out of service (not allowed to return to the road). Additionally, troopers placed 3 drivers out of service.

Vehicles are placed out of service for a variety of reasons relating to bad brakes or tires, or other problems that pose immediate safety risks. Troopers issued a total of 16 citations during the inspections. During the inspections, troopers also issued a total of 14 CVSA decals. The decals indicate that the vehicle did not have any immediate safety issues.

The effort focuses on commercial vehicles that may not pass-through weigh stations as part of their regular routes.

The MAPS Team is funded largely by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Troopers check for compliance with federal safety regulations and enforce laws pertaining to weight, size, registration, dyed fuels and permits associated with commercial vehicles. Local Truck Inspections Held in Dodge County

Lincoln, Neb. –&nbsp;An inmate who went missing from the Community Corrections Center – Lincoln (CCC-L) has been arrested by the Omaha Police Department.&nbsp;Erica Gonzales #393091&nbsp;was taken into custody today and booked into the Douglas County Correctional Center.&nbsp;

Gonzales went missing on Dec. 29, 2024, when she did not return to CCC-L from her place of employment. She started her sentence on March 2, 2023. Gonzales was sentenced to two to five years for theft by shoplifting out of Douglas County.

CCC-L is one of two community custody facilities operated by NDCS. Community custody is the lowest custody level and the least restrictive facility. Inmates are allowed to participate in work opportunities, attend school and religious services with prior approval and without direct supervision.

Chadron Community Hospital & Health Services Announces New Name and Mission

Lincoln, Neb.&nbsp;– The Powerball jackpot has been growing since June 2 without a winner. Because of the high jackpot, the Nebraska Lottery reminds customers to set spending and time limits.

The Powerball jackpot starts at $20 million and continues to grow each drawing until it is won. There have been 35 consecutive Powerball drawings since June 2 without a jackpot winner. This run has grown the estimated jackpot for the Saturday, August 23 drawing to $700 million or $316.3 million with the cash option selected.

This jackpot run has produced two large Nebraska winners. In the July 9 drawing, a $1 million Powerball winning ticket was sold at Players Cafe, 619 N 114th Street in Omaha. And in the August 20 drawing, a $50,000 Powerball winning ticket was sold at QuikTrip #580, 6045 L Street in Omaha.

The largest Powerball jackpot on record occurred in November 2022 when one winner in California won a $2.040 billion jackpot.

Know Your Limit When Playing for Large Powerball Jackpot

At approximately 11:10 a.m. this morning, Alliance Public Safety Dispatchers received a 9-1-1&nbsp;call reporting that a female had been shot at 708 Big Horn.

Officers with the Alliance Police Department and Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office arrived on&nbsp;scene within three minutes. Upon arrival, officers located a female victim, deceased outside the&nbsp;residence, and a male nearby suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. The male was&nbsp;transported to Box Butte General Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The initial investigation indicates that the female was shot by the male, who then shot himself.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation. No further details are being released at this time.

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;- On Friday, Aug. 22, Governor Jim Pillen will join Director Rhonda Lamb for the opening of the new DMV Service Center in Grand Island. The center is another example of a business model that the Department of Motor Vehicles is now implementing to provide services in an expedited and more efficient way.

The center had a soft opening on Wed., Aug. 20, but on Friday, the ribbon cutting and official opening will take place.

The DMV’s new service model was first unveiled in Bellevue in April 2018. Gov. Pillen Joins DMV in Opening of New Grand Island Service Center

They stood on the Fort Kearny Hike-Bike Trail, presenting an oversized check for $13,000 to Nebraska Game and Parks Commission — the total raised during the annual Tyler Vanderheiden Memorial Run in 2025.

That check brings the total raised during the run — an event aimed at raising awareness and understanding of mental health — to more than $40,000 in the past five years.

Each dollar is donated to Nebraska Game and Parks state park trails. In 2025, funds were earmarked for the Fort Kearny Hike-Bike Trail at Fort Kearny State Recreation Area, a stretch of trail that is part of a 13.1-mile system connecting the recreation area to Cottonmill Park in Kearney.

“We’re honored to share the proceeds from the 2025 Tyler Vanderheiden Memorial Run to enhancing the Fort Kearny Hike-Bike Trail, a peaceful stretch near Kearney that invites people to breathe deeply, reflect quietly, and reconnect with themselves and the world around them,” said Shannon Vanderheiden, the event’s co-organizer.

“Tyler loved the outdoors,” she added. “He often said he felt closest to God beneath open skies, surrounded by nature’s quiet beauty. By supporting spaces like Fort Kearny, we celebrate that connection and extend it to others who seek peace, clarity or a moment of stillness.”

This year’s donation is being used as a match to access up to $52,000 in federal Recreation Trails Program funds after a successful Game and Parks grant application in January 2025. The dollars will be used to redeck the bridge along the Fort Kearny Hike-Bile Trail, a coveted spot for sandhill crane viewers.

Event co-organizers Shannon and Tim Vanderheiden, Tyler’s parents, and Trudy Merritt, Platte River Fitness Series director, presented a check to Game and Parks on Aug. 5. Sydney Keller, Tyler’s sister, who is instrumental to the race and its promotion, was unable to attend.

“We are incredibly thankful the Vanderheidens continue to turn a defining moment in their lives into support for mental health awareness,” said Jeff Fields, parks division administrator at Nebraska Game and Parks. “We know the outdoors can be a space for rejuvenation and healing, and because of their support, we are able to maintain or improve trails for everyone.”

Runners from every state in the nation and every county in Nebraska participated either virtually or in-person in the May 31 race in Cody Park in North Platte. United around raising mental health awareness, participants used the hashtags #PreventSuicide and #Run4TJV when they shared their race stories, memories of Tyler and their connection to the outdoors.

“Memorial races like this one resonate with runners in a special way. Attaching something bigger than ourselves to a hard effort creates space for meaning making, something necessary for human flourishing,” Merritt said. “Physical activity is essential to good mental health, and this race speaks to their interrelated nature.”

The annual run began in 2020 with the intent of being a space for healing and support for those who struggle with mental health or know someone who has. People across the state and nation have connected with its message, helping to spread the word and shine a light on mental health and available resources.

The Scottsbluff Police Department has been granted re-accreditation through January of 2028. The department received the initial accreditation in October of 2022. In order to receive or maintain accreditation our agency has:

Scottsbluff PD Granted Re-Accreditation Through Jan. 2028

The Alliance Police Department will begin using a new Motorola P25 Radio System. This advanced system replaces the current UHF network, which will now be reassigned to Alliance area schools and school buses, creating a dedicated emergency communications system for staff and drivers. This will allow schools and bus drivers to contact dispatch directly in the event of an emergency.

This is a major step forward for the City of Alliance. Our schools will now have a reliable way to immediately request help, and the Police Department will benefit from statewide communications, dependable connectivity across the region, and the ability to coordinate seamlessly with other agencies and first responders.

Until now, our officers were unable to communicate directly with agencies such as the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, the Alliance Fire Department, and surrounding jurisdictions during emergency incidents. This limitation created both logistical challenges and officer safety risks. The new system eliminates those gaps, enhancing both public and officer safety.

I want to thank the Alliance City Council for their unwavering support of this project and their continued commitment to improving public safety. I also extend my gratitude to Nicole Kingston with Motorola Solutions and Ted Morris with Action Communications for ensuring we received the right technology to meet our community’s needs.&nbsp;

These new radios have a life expectancy of at least 10 years and incorporate the latest technology to keep our officers safe and connected. This project marks a significant investment in the safety of our community and the effectiveness of our first responders.

There are more than a million acres of publicly accessible lands throughout Nebraska. The recently published 2025-2026 Public Access Atlas identifies and consolidates these public access resources for the benefit of Nebraska’s hunters, trappers and anglers.

Printed copies of this year’s atlas are available at Nebraska Game and Parks Commission headquarters and soon will be available in its district offices and service centers, as well as wherever hunt and fish permits are sold.

KEARNEY, Neb. – The University of Nebraska at Kearney Pride of the Plains Marching Band has announced its season schedule, which begins with the Sept. 6 football game against Chadron State.

In addition to performing at all Loper home football games, the Pride of the Plains will perform Sept. 20 during the annual UNK Band Day Parade in downtown Kearney. The parade begins at 10 a.m.

Other scheduled performances include the Harvest of Harmony Parade on Oct. 4 in Grand Island, UNK Homecoming Parade on Oct. 11 in downtown Kearney and Nebraska State Bandmasters Association State Marching Contest hosted Oct. 25 at Kearney High School.

The show theme for the 2025 season features music from “James Bond 007.”

The band is under the direction of Brian Alber. The drum line instructor and director of bands is Duane Bierman and the color guard coordinator is Adrienne Rall. Drum majors are Samantha Bursaw of Ravenna and Emily Schwaiger of Cheyenne, Wyoming.

 </figure>KEARNEY, Neb. – The University of Nebraska at Kearney Pride of the Plains Marching Band has announced its season schedule, which begins with the Sept. 6 football game against Chadron State.In addition to performing at all Loper home football games, the Pride of the Plains will perform Sept. 20 during the annual UNK Band Day Parade in downtown Kearney. The parade begins at 10 a.m.Other scheduled performances include the Harvest of Harmony Parade on Oct. 4 in Grand Island, UNK Homecoming Parade on Oct. 11 in downtown Kearney and Nebraska State Bandmasters Association State Marching Contest hosted Oct. 25 at Kearney High School.The show theme for the 2025 season features music from “James Bond 007.”The band is under the direction of Brian Alber. The drum line instructor and director of bands is Duane Bierman and the color guard coordinator is Adrienne Rall. UNK Marching Band Announces Show Theme, Performance Schedule

OGALLALA, Neb. (Aug. 20, 2025) — The Lake Mac Casino Resort and Racetrack officially opened Tuesday in Ogallala, drawing nearly 1,000 people to a daylong celebration that featured horse racing, sports betting and a visit from Gov. Jim Pillen.

The $31 million facility includes more than 300 slot machines, electronic table games and the Draft Day sports lounge, which offers sports betting, simulcast racing and full food service.

Ole’s Steakhouse of Paxton catered a free meal before the ribbon cutting, preparing for 600 guests but running out of food as more than 900 people streamed through the gates.

Pillen praised the Kehl family, the Iowa-based developers behind the project, for their investment in Nebraska.

“It’s really important that we never, ever take each other for granted,” Pillen told the crowd. “I want to support the economic development and incredible tourism this casino brings, and give a shoutout to the Kehl family for their incredible investment here in Ogallala.”

The Kehls, longtime operators in the gaming and hospitality industry, also own and operate the Grand Island Casino and Resort at Fonner Park. The family has invested more than $250 million in Nebraska between the two projects. The Ogallala site has created 125 jobs so far and is expected to employ about 400 once fully built out.

Mary Wilson, executive director of Keith County Area Development, called the opening a milestone for the community.

“It was a momentous day for Ogallala and for the great state of Nebraska,” Wilson said. “This represents years of vision, planning and tireless work behind the scenes.”

After the ribbon cutting, the first horse race was won by Dear Dash, followed by two more races as the casino doors opened around 4 p.m.

The current casino space is temporary, but plans call for the facility to nearly double in size with additional restaurants, convention space and live table games. The casino expects to replace its electronic table games with live dealers next March.

Lake Mac Casino Resort and Racetrack opens in Ogallala

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;– Today, Governor Jim Pillen announced three state-federal partnerships to support President Donald Trump’s efforts to promote homeland security and protect Americans from criminal, illegal aliens in the United States.&nbsp;

“This is about keeping Nebraskans – and Americans across our country – safe,” said Governor Pillen. “We want President Trump to know that Nebraska is supportive and grateful for his ongoing, critical work with Secretary Noem to arrest and deport criminal, illegal aliens.”

In conjunction with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Secretary Kristi Noem, Gov. Pillen ordered the Nebraska National Guard to provide administrative and logistical support to Nebraska-based ICE officials in enforcing immigration laws. Approximately 20 Army National Guard soldiers will participate in this mission, commencing training within the next week.

Additionally, Gov. Pillen and Sec. Noem announced an agreement to utilize the Work Ethic Camp (WEC) in McCook as a future detention facility for those awaiting deportation and other immigration proceedings.&nbsp;

Finally, at Gov. Pillen’s direction, the Nebraska State Patrol announced its intent to sign a 287(g) agreement empowering its Nebraska State troopers to help ICE arrest criminal, illegal aliens.“

Earlier this summer, on the streets of Omaha, Nebraska law enforcement agents worked with ICE to arrest a MS-13 drug-trafficking kingpin and murderer,” said Gov. Pillen. “This stuff hits close to home – and hits every corner of this state and country. Government's most important job is to keep us safe, and that’s why the State of Nebraska, under my leadership, is partnering with President Trump and his team to help Make America Safe Again.”
