Richard L. Taylor passed away unexpectedly Sunday, April 7, 2024 at Box Butte General Hospital.&nbsp; He was 80 years of age.

He was born in Alliance, NE on May 30, 1943 to Roy and Mildred (Roland) Taylor.

On January 12, 1968, he was united in marriage to Ila M. Sexton at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Alliance.

Everyone who knew Richard knew he always had a story to tell, whether from his days in the Army, driving milk truck for Gilette Dairy, working at Turf Rental, or keeping the machines running at Parker.&nbsp;&nbsp; Some stories were short, some were long, but most of the stories reminded him of another story he had to tell.&nbsp; Richard enjoyed traveling all his life, from Korea while in the Army, to Greece, Germany, Turkey, Italy, Alaska, Hawaii, Canada, and all through the United States.&nbsp; Whether working or travelling, Richard never knew a stranger.&nbsp; He definitely had a gift of being able to talk to people, even if they didn’t speak the same language.&nbsp;&nbsp; Richard loved to hunt and fish with his son Scott and his grandsons, going to Texas to hunt pigs, Colorado to hunt elk, and many deer, antelope, and pheasants closer to home.&nbsp; Through all the stories told over the years, a common thread to many was his family.&nbsp; Richard was always happiest spending time with his wife, Ila, and all his kids and grandchildren.&nbsp;&nbsp; He even loved his dog, Ace.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ila, his children, Kimberly (Kelly) McLean, Scott (Leah) Taylor all of Alliance and Kandace (Jim) Olson of Ashby and his grandchildren, Brandon (Christal) Jones, Cameron Jones, Kobee Olson and Kade Olson.&nbsp; He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Bonnie Thayer of Fremont, Merle Taylor of Germany, Fran Synoground of Minatare, Dorothy Lunbery of Alliance, Sheryl Taylor of Alliance, Gary Taylor of Amarillo, TX, Aaron Taylor of Tacoma, WA and Kathy Hansen of Alliance and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp; In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

Memorial services will be Tuesday, April 16 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s United Lutheran Church with Reverend Megan Morrow officiating.&nbsp; Interment will be in the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery.&nbsp;

Memorials may be given to St. John’s United Lutheran Church.

Robert Clayton Grabher passed away April 4, 2024 at the age of 89 years. Bob was born Sept 19, 1934 to Otho C. and Elizabeth K. (Keiser) Grabher in Alliance, Nebraska. He attended school in Alliance and graduated from Alliance High School in 1953. He attended college in Boulder, Colorado and Kearney, Nebraska where he received his teaching degree.&nbsp;

He was in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1957 to 1963 and was very proud of his service. He received the Dress Blue Uniform as outstanding graduate recruit in the battalion and was selected as Honor Man of his platoon also received Rifle Expert status and was promoted to the rank of Private First Class.

&nbsp;He married Betty McGinley Dec 27, 1958, to this union 3 children were born, Gerald, Mike and Cyd Marie and he adopted her daughter Aileen.&nbsp;

In March of 1974 he married Janet (Anderson) Churchill and was “Dad” to Dean, Dick, Don and Dan. In May of 1974 they moved to the ranch where Janet grew up, south of Valentine, Nebraska. In 1982 they purchased 236 head of registered Charolais females from the LW Gardiner dispersal in Richmond, Utah. The first Rocking Arrow Charolais bull sale was held in 1984 and continued for 37 years. In 1994 Rocking Arrow Charolais held their first female sale at the ranch and continued for several years.&nbsp;

Always active in Charolais activities, Bob was president of the Nebraska Charolais Association in the 1990s. He was also a member of the AICA Show Committee, attending meetings in Kansas City, Houston, Denver and Louisville. Bob and Janet hosted various Charolais events including The Nebraska Charolais Association Field Day in 1987, contributed to the Charolais Beef Gift Boxes in 1990, sponsored the Iowa Cattlemen’s Tour in 1992 and won the Sandhills Select Pen Show in 1993. Over the years they hosted foreign cattleman including groups from Australia and Brazil.

With the purchase of Mr. Inland Expediter 501 came a legacy of Grand Champions. In 1993 artist Galen Struve painted a water color picture of Expediter which was auctioned off in Kansas City for the National Ambassador Program. Rocking Arrow Charolais was honored to received plaques for three AICA Roll of Excellence Sires, Expediter, RAC Goosecreek 3043 PLD and KC Stolichnaya HO16P ET. With the 1998 Nebraska State Fair Grand Champion Female, Rocking Arrow cattle excelled in the show ring including Denver Grand and Reserve Carloads, Pens of Bulls and four National Champion or Reserve Cow-calf Pairs. The 41st National Show at Denver, Colorado was dedicated to Rocking Arrow Charolais.

Bob was an avid lifetime supporter of Husker Football and attended games on a regular basis. As a child listening to the radio he became a huge fan of the Greenbay Packers. He and Janet were able to attend a Packer game in Wisconsin. They were fortunate to do a lot of traveling to almost every state in the USA. Alaska and Canada, up and down the full East and West Coasts, Washington DC, Gettysburg, Nashville, Memphis and Vicksburg, Grand Canyon, Tetons, Yellowstone and the Black Hills, balloon festivals in Albuquerque, the National Cemetery in Vicksburg and Andersonville and lots in between.&nbsp;

Family was very important to Bob and Janet; they spent a lot of time attending grandkids activities and hosted many family get togethers at the ranch. &nbsp;Bob and Janet have 4 sons, Dean (Cindy) Churchill on the ranch Valentine NE, Dick (Mary) Churchill Phoenix, Arizona, Don (Melissa) Churchill De Smet, South Dakota, Daniel (Jennifer) Churchill Ft. Collins, Colorado. Bob has 22 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.&nbsp;

Bob was preceded in death by his wife Janet, his mother Elizabeth, his father Otho and daughter Aileen.

Rudy L. Landreth, 72, of Morrill, went home Monday, April 1, 2024, surrounded with family after 10 year hard fought battle with cancer. His funeral service will be held at 2pm on Friday, April 5, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Morrill with Pastor Scott Firminhac officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Scottsbluff. Visitation will be on Thursday, April 4 from 3pm – 7pm at Bridgman Funeral Home in Scottsbluff. Rudy was born to Lloyd and Bertha (Wellnitz) Landreth at Gordon, Nebraska on April 16, 1951. He grew up on the family farm in the Hay Springs-Rushville area. Worked for the family and relatives farming throughout his high school years. Attended country school at Hay Springs, Kindergarten through 8th grade. Graduated in 1970 from Hay Springs high school.

Rudy was baptized and confirmed at the country Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rushville, Nebraska. He was also involved with Sunday School and youth groups.

In 1971, he moved to Scottsbluff area to seek work. Married his sweetheart, Patty Nolde, of Mitchell, Nebraska on August 24, 1974 at Calvary Lutheran Church in Scottsbluff. They made their home in Morrill, Nebraska. To this union came along son, Christopher, and daughter, Amanda.

Throughout the years, he was employed with Kizzier Chevrolet, Scottsbluff, Nebraska for 5 years; Jirdon Agri Chemicals, Morrill, Nebraska, for 15 years; and then retired in 2019 after 24 years with the Scotts Bluff County Roads Department.

Rudy was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Morrill serving as Head Usher, on the Sunday School Board of Education, and grounds keeper.

Rudy was diagnosed with colon-rectal cancer in September, 2013. He never showed any signs of being sick, always his same happy, go-lucky guy. He was strong until the day he “went home”. He outlived the 5- year cancer life span by surviving and fighting for an extra 5 ½ years.

A private 50th wedding anniversary celebration was held prior to his passing, with family and friends at his home.

Rudy enjoyed being outdoors, watching and feeding his birds and squirrels. Enjoyed doing yard work, especially riding on his John Deere riding mower. Just enjoying life and being his happy go-lucky self.

Rudy is survived by his loving wife, Patty; son Christopher (Heather) Landreth of Gering; daughter Amanda Landreth of Mitchell ; grandson Treighton (Megan) Landreth of Cheyenne Wyoming and granddaughter Heidi Landreth of Mitchell; brother Larry (Teresa) Landreth of Chadron, and sisters Virginia Popp of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Bernita (Dave) Kleensang of Rushville, and several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by parents, Bertha and Lloyd Landreth, grandparents, and sister, Joyce Jech of Hay Springs.

&nbsp; Darrell Dean Parker, 85, of Scottsbluff, NE, went to be with his Lord on Monday, April 1, 2024 at Monument Rehabilitation and Care Center in Scottsbluff, NE. His Graveside Memorial Service will be held in the fall at Mitchell City Cemetery, Mitchell, NE. At Darrell’s request cremation has taken place. Darrell was born on February 1, 1939 at Mitchell, NE to Dale (Chess) and Esther (Frank) Parker. He was raised in the valley attending Scottsbluff, Lake Alice and Bayard schools. He graduated from Bayard High School in 1958. Darrell was baptized by Immersion and placed on the membership at First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ Church Scottsbluff, NE on January 25, 1948 by Reverend Dubbs. Darrell was also a member of the Church of Christ in Bayard, NE.

Darrell moved to Omaha in 1963, residing there until returning to Scottsbluff in 2002. In Omaha he worked for Bausch &amp; Lomb Optical from 1966 to 1968 and then for Physicians Optical supply from 1969 to 1974.He was married to Charlene Lawson from 1966 to 1971. He later married Eleanor “Elli” Castillo on February 28, 1987. Darrell became disabled due to health issues. He resided at Monument Rehabilitation and Care Center until his death.

Family was important to Darrell and he always said, “We are a close knit family”. Darrell enjoyed history consisting of early settlement of the Valley, Oregon Trail and local Indian tribes. He enjoyed taking pictures of family and of landscapes, doing leather work, and had a talent for drawing horses. He also enjoyed singing &amp; playing country western and Christian tapes. He had a sense of humor like his father and brother and liked to joke around. He will be missed by all.

Darrell Dean Parker (1939 - 2024)

Henry Dean Applegarth was born in his Grandma Oakley James (Taylor) Ayer’s bed on June 28, 1938, in Choctaw, Oklahoma to his proud parents Andrew Joseph Applegarth II and Irma Maxine (Taylor) Applegarth while his father Joe was working in the oil fields in Wyoming to earn money during the depression. They were there for several years, returning to the Sandhills where Joe was employed on various ranches. The family ended up living on the historic 86-section cattle ranch called the Dumbbell Ranch north of Hyannis, Nebraska. At that time, the ranch used only horses to do the ranch work. As he grew up on the ranch, Dean learned to break horses and specialized in training the large draft horses. The lessons he learned from working and training horses were transferred to his lifelong love of people and working with them in whatever category was necessary and especially in the field of education.

Dean and Margaret were friends since sixth and eighth grade, and when Dean transferred back to Hyannis High School, they began dating and were married on December 25, 1958, at the Episcopal Church in Hyannis, Nebraska. Into this union was born Rebecca Lynn, Joseph Dean, and Floyd Daniel Applegarth. Dean attended and graduated from Chadron State Teachers College with a Degree in Education. The family moved back to Hyannis where he began teaching at a rural school, District 143 (a K-8 school), more commonly known as Dumbbell School. It was the same school where he had graduated from the eighth grade. It had no electricity or running water and had a stove that was manually started every morning for heat. In Omaha, he worked out in a gym where famous professional wrestlers trained. Dean soon became good friends with them, and he began the journey himself of becoming a body builder. He even competed in a couple of Mr. Nebraska contests. His love for powerlifting began in high school when he had&nbsp;become good friends with Gene Rader whose father owned Iron Man Industries in Alliance, Nebraska. It was the Muscle and Fitness magazine of that era.

As an insurance adjuster, he was often separated from his family, so he took a job managing five lumber yards owned by Wacker Elliot and Wacker and lived in McCook, Nebraska for a stint. Being in that area, he met the president of the school board in Edison, Nebraska, a small town nearby to the south. The president called the school board together and they hired Dean on the spot to be the principal of the grade school. Danny was born during this time and was delivered by Dean’s best friend, Wayne Weston, who was a medical doctor in Lexington, Nebraska. The family spent three years there until Dean applied to work for the federal government in the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He was hired to teach at Manderson Day School on the Pine Ridge Reservation. During this time, he earned his Master’s Degree in School Administration from Black Hills State University and was honored at a Pow Wow at Wounded Knee in the summer of 1972 and was given his Lakota name, “Wambli Tokahe” (Leading Eagle or First Eagle.) He was made principal of the school the day before the infamous Occupation of Wounded Knee in 1973. He got to experience firsthand the AIM standoff at Wounded Knee that made national headlines.

During his time as a teacher, he was elected to become an advocate for fellow teachers and to be the president of NFFE (National Federation of Federal Employees) for North and South Dakota where he served two terms. Due to his advanced education, he was transferred to Pine Ridge where he became principal of the Pine Ridge High School for a year. Soon after, he took the Project Director position at Loneman School in Oglala, South Dakota. He aided in the transfer of that school from being a Bureau of Indian School to a tribal operation.

In 1976, Dean switched careers and became a locomotive engineer on the Burlington Northern Railroad, which he said was the best job he ever had. He enjoyed driving the coal trains and was able to make many friends. During that time, Dean started a home rental business in Chadron. He and Margaret owned and operated around 50 rental properties, taking old properties, renovating them, and converting them to be an asset to the community. They were the biggest landlords in Chadron during that time.

Dean had a colorful and unforgettable personality. He was good natured. He never met a stranger. He treated everybody the same no matter what station in life they were at. He loved being around people and couldn’t get enough of it. He always encouraged everybody he met to advance their life, be the very best that they could be, and to always remain positive. After his retirement, he spent a lot of time with&nbsp;his grandchildren who were the joy of his life. He and Margaret were inseparable and went everywhere together. They were deeply involved with the Joseph and Sheryl Applegarth Country Gospel Band and drove the parade floats in every parade for over thirty years. Dean and Margaret got involved with the Nebraska GOP and had the pleasure of meeting a host of incumbents and representatives. Dean and Margaret were married for 65 years until his death on March 27th, 2024. He is sorely missed.

 </figure>Henry Dean Applegarth was born in his Grandma Oakley James (Taylor) Ayer’s bed on June 28, 1938, in Choctaw, Oklahoma to his proud parents Andrew Joseph Applegarth II and Irma Maxine (Taylor) Applegarth while his father Joe was working in the oil fields in Wyoming to earn money during the depression. They were there for several years, returning to the Sandhills where Joe was employed on various ranches. The family ended up living on the historic 86-section cattle ranch called the Dumbbell Ranch north of Hyannis, Nebraska. At that time, the ranch used only horses to do the ranch work. As he grew up on the ranch, Dean learned to break horses and specialized in training the large draft horses. The lessons he learned from working and training horses were transferred to his lifelong love of people and working with them in whatever category was necessary and especially in the field of education.Dean and Margaret were friends since sixth and eighth grade, and when Dean transferred back to Hyannis High School, they began dating and were married on December 25, 1958, at the Episcopal Church in Hyannis, Nebraska. Into this union was born Rebecca Lynn, Joseph Dean, and Floyd Daniel Applegarth. Dean attended and graduated from Chadron State Teachers College with a Degree in Education. The family moved back to Hyannis where he began teaching at a rural school, District 143 (a K-8 school), more commonly known as Dumbbell School. It was the same school where he had graduated from the eighth grade. It had no electricity or running water and had a stove that was manually started every morning for heat. Polly Potmesil passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at Highland Park Care Center.&nbsp; She was 91.

Beth died peacefully at Great Plains Hospital in North Platte, NE, April 3rd, with family by her side. &nbsp;She was born on April 6, 1977 in Skagway, Alaska to Del and Kay Almond. &nbsp;She completed their family joining sisters Kelly and Jennifer.

The family soon moved to Alliance, Nebraska and into a neighborhood filled with friends and family including her cousins, Travis, Trevor, and Todd.

She attended St. Agnes Academy, graduating from Alliance High School with the Class of 1995. She furthered her education by attending LPN school receiving her diploma alongside her childhood friend Hilary (Bauer) Gomez.

Beth was united in marriage to Chris Cook in July of 2001, and to this union Hunter Thomas and Kennedi Kay were added making their family complete.

Her desire to continue in her nursing profession led her to receive her R.N. and BSN. &nbsp;She worked in the North Platte area most of her career. She always had a love for the elderly and disabled. &nbsp;This led her to a new career role at the North Platte Opportunity Center while still carrying on her duties in the nursing field at Lighthouse LLC.

Her greatest joy without a doubt were her children, Hunter and Kennedi. &nbsp;She was their biggest cheerleader and advocate in their lives.

She was preceded in death by her father, Delton.

Elizabeth "Beth" Almond Cook (1977-2024)

With sorrow we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Elisa "Lisa" Reyes, age 94. Lisa died peacefully in her sleep on March 3, 2024, while residing at Heritage Estates in Gering.

Lisa was born in Scottsbluff to Juan and Angela Cervantes on December 2, 1929. She married Carmelo Reyes on August 30, 1950. She was married to the love of her life for 70 years. To this union, six children were born. She was devoted to her family. Her children and grandchildren were always her primary focus. It brought her great joy to attend all their activities and sporting events. She cherished cooking and baking for her family and often exhibited her creative talents by making beautiful crafts for loved ones. She was an avid gardener and was especially known for her amazing Irises. She was a compassionate person who often visited people in nursing homes and selflessly cared for and befriended those who were in need. She shared with her family a love for sports and enjoyed watching the Huskers.

Elisa "Lisa" Reyes (1929 - 2024)

Richard Curtis Merrill, 83, of Tarpon Springs, Florida passed away on March 27, 2024. He was born on August 12, 1940 to Norman B. Merrill and Alta Dille Merrill in Colorado Springs, CO. 

Dick, a diligent worker and loyal friend, dedicated his life to his family and to exemplifying Christ. Dick was the second born of four children. In the Spring of 1945 his family moved from California to the Sandhills of Nebraska where they raised cattle. Dick attended country schools through the 8th grade and then attended Gordon High School. After high school, he went to work full-time as a ranch hand. 

In 1960, he joined the Marine Corps and was stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA. It was during this time that he became pen pals with his sister’s (Sally) friend, Vici Torske. The couple inevitably fell in love and, without even meeting each other’s parents, eloped to Las Vegas. Dick married the love of his life on May 18, 1963. 

Throughout his career, Dick was a member of the Carpenter’s Union, worked as a maintenance worker, drove trucks, and owned his own construction company. Dick had a reputation for the high quality of his work. He built beautiful homes, exquisite cabinetry, and crafted fine woodworking items. Although the couple moved frequently, living in Nebraska, Colorado, California, and Oregon, the Sandhills was always home. 

When Dick and Vici moved their family to the Dille place in February 1974, they found the home of their hearts. After moving away, they returned to the ranch as often as they could. Dick lived his life for his Savior and his family. When Vici became ill, Dick set an example of marital devotion and love in the way he faithfully and steadfastly cared for her. 

In 2019, Dick made one final move across the country to Tarpon Springs, FL where he spent his remaining years. Dick’s life was an exceptional example of a life lived in Christ and his walk inspired his family to follow in his footsteps. He was very active in his church, including Bible studies, daily devotions, and raising his children in a Godly household. He possessed unfaltering humility and patience and shared the love of Christ with everyone around him. 

Dick is survived by his loving children: Lesa Merrill (John Horrocks), Becky Hollibaugh (Karl), Norman Merrill (LaDonna), and Janice Dart (Kevin), as well as his brother, Kenneth Merrill, sisters Sally Rollins and MaryAnn Walters, 17 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. Dick was preceded in death by his loving wife, Vici Torske Merrill, parents, Norman B. Merrill and Alta Dille Merrill, and by his grandchildren Kyle Parker and Hannah Hollibaugh. 

A celebration of life will be held on April 6, 2024 at Hyannis Cemetery in Hyannis, NE. Chamberlain-Drabbels Mortuary in Hay Springs, NE is assisting the family with the arrangements. 

Dick never knew a stranger and was known to strike up a conversation with anyone at a moment’s notice. He was beloved by his family and friends. Dick Merrill will be remembered for his friendly nature, hardworking spirit, devotion to his family, and his love for Jesus. His legacy of faith and dedication will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He is gone, but not forgotten

Dick had a reputation for the high quality of his work. He built beautiful homes, exquisite cabinetry, and crafted fine woodworking items. Although the couple moved frequently, living in Nebraska, Colorado, California, and Oregon, the Sandhills was always home. When Dick and Vici moved their family to the Dille place in February 1974, they found the home of their hearts. After moving away, they returned to the ranch as often as they could. Dick lived his life for his Savior and his family. When Vici became ill, Dick set an example of marital devotion and love in the way he faithfully and steadfastly cared for her. In 2019, Dick made one final move across the country to Tarpon Springs, FL where he spent his remaining years. Dick’s life was an exceptional example of a life lived in Christ and his walk inspired his family to follow in his footsteps. He was very active in his church, including Bible studies, daily devotions, and raising his children in a Godly household. He possessed unfaltering humility and patience and shared the love of Christ with everyone around him. Dick is survived by his loving children: Lesa Merrill (John Horrocks), Becky Hollibaugh (Karl), Norman Merrill (LaDonna), and Janice Dart (Kevin), as well as his brother, Kenneth Merrill, sisters Sally Rollins and MaryAnn Walters, 17 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. Dick was preceded in death by his loving wife, Vici Torske Merrill, parents, Norman B. Merrill and Alta Dille Merrill, and by his grandchildren Kyle Parker and Hannah Hollibaugh. A celebration of life will be held on April 6, 2024 at Hyannis Cemetery in Hyannis, NE. Chamberlain-Drabbels Mortuary in Hay Springs, NE is assisting the family with the arrangements. Dick never knew a stranger and was known to strike up a conversation with anyone at a moment’s notice. He was beloved by his family and friends. Richard Curtis Merrill (1940 - 2024)

Darlene Burneda Jacobs of Alliance, NE passed away Saturday, March 30, 2024 at the age of 91. She was born August 7, 1932 in Hay Springs, NE to Fred and Minnie Mae (Kutschara) Sellmer.

She attended country school in Hay Springs, Sidney, Rushville and Heron, Montana. She graduated from Alliance in 1950. Her oldest brother and Darlene walked 1-2 miles to school in the sand hills. If they were lucky, they were able to catch a ride with the school teachers.

She married James (Jimmy) Jacobs in Sterling, CO on May 18, 1950. They had 3 children, Ronald Jacobs, Rebecca Leisy, and Vickie Grimes.

Her husband passed away on April 30, 1987 from a very tragic accident. After marrying Jimmy, she moved to the farm that Jimmy was born and raised at. She learned to do many things: drive truck, tractors, and combines. She had a big garden every year and raised her own chickens. Due to having a big garden, she canned everything she could to feed her family. She made her own bread and churned her own butter. Darlene worked at Crossroads Assisted Living for 18 years, retiring at the age of 80 years old.&nbsp; She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary

Darlene is survived by her son, Ronald Jacobs and daughters, Rebecca Leisy and Vickie Grimes (Larry Grimes) all of Alliance, NE along with a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Gene Sellmer and his wife Carole Sellmer of Las Cruces, New Mexico and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Jimmy, sister Ardella and her husband Lou, brother Alvin, and a grandson.

Funeral services will be Thursday, April 4 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be Wednesday, April 3 from 1-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Frankie was born in Bloomington, Nebraska on March 6, 1925, to Franklin and Tracy Keim. He was the fifth of eight children. The Keim family moved to Chadron in 1936. After serving in the U.S. Army, Frankie returned to Chadron and married Martha A. Gochnauer on October 16, 1948, in Alliance, NE. To this union were born seven children. The couple farmed and ranched for many years around Chadron and near Hay Springs, NE. Frankie enjoyed many activities, especially fishing, hunting, rodeos, and Nebraska football.

Frankie is survived by two sisters, Edna Whaley and Ravay Kleeb of Broken Bow; four children, Loren (Mary Alice) Keim of Palmyra, NY; Beverly Wilhoit of Scottsbluff; Harvey (Deb) of York, NE and Bruce (Keith) of Rapid City, SD; son-in-laws Dave Hottell of Kimball and Jim Jackson of Chadron, 15 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, special-in-laws, nieces and nephews.

Franklin was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Ann; three children, Larry Keim, Juanita Hottell and Leanna Jackson; son-in-law, Larry Wilhoit; brothers, Alvin, Erwin and David Keim and sisters, Kathryn Peak and Annalee Coday.

Franklin Homer Keim (1925 - 2024)

Carol A. Johnson, 94, formerly of Alliance passed away Thursday, March 28, 2024 at Littleton, Colorado.

She was born May 14, 1929 in Bridgeport, Nebraska to Carl and Clara (Lapping) Sward.

On July 6, 1958 she was united in marriage to Robert Carl Johnson.&nbsp; Carol was a 62 year resident of Alliance.&nbsp; She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she served as Financial Secretary.&nbsp; She also was a member of the BBGH Auxiliary for 22 years and served as treasurer.&nbsp;

She is survived by her daughter, Lynda (Joe) Feistner of Littleton, CO, her grandchildren, Michele Feistner of Littleton, CO, John (Heather) Feistner of Durango and Jeremiah (Amanda) Johnson of Mead, CO, and her great-grandchildren, Taylor and Brynley Feistner of Durango and Erica Ashley Bueche of Charleston, SC.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her husband, her son, Michael R. Johnson and her daughter, Karla S. Johnson and her parents.

A memorial service will be Saturday, April 13 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Alliance with Pastor Gene Hill officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to First Baptist Church and American Heart Association.

Florence “Flossy” Sydow, 93, was born on Thursday, March 20, 1930 to Ernest and Elsie Weinel in Alliance, Nebraska.&nbsp; She graduated from Alliance High School. After graduation she taught school and pursued her pilot’s license. On February 26, 1950 she married Robert “Bob” Sydow. Bob and Florence spent many weekends camping and fishing, a family tradition followed by many of their children and grandchildren.

Florence took her last breath on Wednesday, March 13, 2024 at the Platte County Legacy Home in Wheatland.&nbsp;

She is survived by&nbsp;her children Larry (Lynda), Connie (Dan) Flores, Ernie (Peggy), Danny (Arlene Kulas), and Jolinda (Dan) Heinrichs; eleven grandchildren; many great grandchildren; a great-great granddaughter;&nbsp;sister, Bonnie Duncan; brother, Don Weinel; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; sister, Dorothy Rose; son, Rodney; great grandson, Lucas; and many brother and sister-in-law’s.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A celebration of life was held on Monday,&nbsp;March 25, 2024 at 11:00A.M.&nbsp;at the Impact Ministries in Wheatland.&nbsp; Burial will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, South Dakota on April 22, 2024 at 1:30pm.

Marty J. “Joe” Martin, age 66, passed away on Tuesday, March 19th, 2024. Marty was born in Lima, Ohio, on March 31, 1957, to Noble and Freda (Geckle) Martin. On January 26, 1995, Marty married Cindy Hiner, who survives him in Crawford, NE. 

Marty was proud to have served his country as a member of the United States Army, where he served with his brother Noble, and (current) brother-in-law Mike Meeker. He was a member of the Bordeaux Creek Fur Trade and Muzzle Loaders Association, with which he was able to exercise his passion for history, craftsmanship, and marksmanship. He was also a proud member of the National Muzzle Loaders Association. An avid outdoorsman, Marty loved exploring, and getting out to see nature. Marty loved working in his workshop, which he built himself, and was always spending time making something. 

Above all, he loved spending time with his family, and treasured his time with his grandchildren. 

Marty is survived by his wife Cindy (Hiner) Martin of Crawford, NE; his daughter Brianna (Pat) Severns of Cheyenne, WY; his son Matthew (Kourtney) Martin of Lincoln, NE; his grandchildren Lucas Soester, Peyton Johnson, and Maya Martin, along with many nieces and nephews. In addition, Marty is survived by his brothers, Noble (Mary) Martin of DeMossville, KY; Morris (Doreen) Martin of Lima, OH; and his sisters, Ann (Mike) Nalley of Lima, OH, and Janet (Mike) Meeker of Lima, OH. 

A celebration of life will be held for Marty in June

Richard Harold “Dick” Chizek was born on January 21, 1939, in Chadron, NE to Thomas and Marvel Chizek. He was the fifth of six children. He passed away on March 20, 2024, at his home in Chadron surrounded by his loving family.

Dick was united in marriage to his loving wife Sandi on August 16, 1975. They combined their families to include two daughters and two sons.

After graduation from Chadron High School in 1957, he served in the Marine Corp from 1958 to 1961. After being honorably discharged he worked for the Department of Defense. He worked on the HAWK Missile Systems from 1962 to 1966. From 1966 to 1992 he worked with the Naval Undersea Warfare Engineering Division. In 1992, he and Sandi moved to Ketchikan, Alaska. There he worked for the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division until 1994, when he retired from the Civil Service.&nbsp;

They found their first retirement home in Lovell, Wyoming where he could enjoy all the outdoor sports he loved. They enjoyed gardening and their many friends in this small friendly community.

In 2017 Dick and Sandi moved back to Chadron, NE to be closer to his family. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, tinkering in his shop and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his daughter Cynthia Marie Booker of Barstow, CA and his brother Don Chizek of Selina, OH. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife Sandi and his daughter Brenda.

Carol M. Wears, age 89, formerly of Sidney, passed away on her 89th birthday, March 16, 2024 in Lexington, SC.

Carol M. Wears was born March 16, 1935 in Alliance, NE to Raymond Jules and Margaret Marie (Klein) Kicken. Carol attended St. Agnes Academy in Alliance, NE, and Curtis Ag School in Curtis, NE. She married Donald Spencer in 1953 and raised their children on the farm north of Potter, NE. After their marriage ended, Carol married James Wears in 1983.

James and Carol moved from Sidney, NE to Lincoln, NE in 2007. Carol later moved to Henderson, NV then Lexington, SC to be near her daughters, Karen and Cindy. They loved their friends in Sidney, NE and enjoyed making and selling wood crafts at shows, going on Security First bus tours, and trips to the Rocky Mountains, Fort Collins, Cheyenne, Nashville, Las Vegas, New York City and Cozumel. She loved music, singing in the church choir, polka and square dancing, and her dominos group. She was a member of the Methodist Church, Eastern Star and Beta Sigma Phi sorority.

Carol’s survivors include her children, Brenda Spencer-Nelson of Elkhorn, NE, Cindy (Dale) Abel of Chapin, SC, Karen (Richard) Sick Pleming of Chapin, SC, and Brent Spencer of Lincoln, NE; brother and sister-in-law Lucien (Margaret) Kicken of Scottsbluff, NE; brother-in-law John (Shari) Jensen of Arthur, NE; eight grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and stepchildren Robert (Joyce) Wears of Weatherford, OK, and Gary (Rhonda) Wears of Perryton, TX.

Preceding her in death were her wonderful parents, loving husband (Jim Wears), son-in-law (Kevin Sick), sister (Beverly Jensen), brothers and sisters-in-law (Ray and Enid Kicken), (George and Dee Kicken), stepdaughter (Carol Hagen), and Donald Spencer.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at Faith Methodist Church in Sidney, NE with Pastor Corey Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow at the Calvary Cemetery in Alliance, NE at 1:30 P.M. Services will be livestreamed on the Gehrig-Stitt Chapel Facebook page and recorded for later viewing on the Gehrig-Stitt website.

Wears was born March 16, 1935 in Alliance, NE to Raymond Jules and Margaret Marie (Klein) Kicken. Carol attended St. Agnes Academy in Alliance, NE, and Curtis Ag School in Curtis, NE. She married Donald Spencer in 1953 and raised their children on the farm north of Potter, NE. After their marriage ended, Carol married James Wears in 1983.James and Carol moved from Sidney, NE to Lincoln, NE in 2007. Carol later moved to Henderson, NV then Lexington, SC to be near her daughters, Karen and Cindy. They loved their friends in Sidney, NE and enjoyed making and selling wood crafts at shows, going on Security First bus tours, and trips to the Rocky Mountains, Fort Collins, Cheyenne, Nashville, Las Vegas, New York City and Cozumel. She loved music, singing in the church choir, polka and square dancing, and her dominos group. She was a member of the Methodist Church, Eastern Star and Beta Sigma Phi sorority.Carol’s survivors include her children, Brenda Spencer-Nelson of Elkhorn, NE, Cindy (Dale) Abel of Chapin, SC, Karen (Richard) Sick Pleming of Chapin, SC, and Brent Spencer of Lincoln, NE; brother and sister-in-law Lucien (Margaret) Kicken of Scottsbluff, NE; brother-in-law John (Shari) Jensen of Arthur, NE; eight grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and stepchildren Robert (Joyce) Wears of Weatherford, OK, and Gary (Rhonda) Wears of Perryton, TX.Preceding her in death were her wonderful parents, loving husband (Jim Wears), son-in-law (Kevin Sick), sister (Beverly Jensen), brothers and sisters-in-law (Ray and Enid Kicken), (George and Dee Kicken), stepdaughter (Carol Hagen), and Donald Spencer.A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, April 3, 2024 at Faith Methodist Church in Sidney, NE with Pastor Corey Jenkins officiating. Nancy Lee Stricker, 58, of Alliance passed away suddenly Saturday, March 16, 2024 at Monument Health Rapid City Hospital with her family by her side.

Nancy was born January 20, 1966 in Alliance to Byron and Cleona “Babs” (Gogert) Fowler. She was welcomed by two older brothers and two older sisters.&nbsp; Growing up she was active in 4-H, participating in many projects.&nbsp; Among her favorites were cake decorating, entomology and showing her dog, Shebba. She also especially enjoyed her experiences at 4-H camp in Halsey, NE.

She attended District 1 country school, kindergarten through the 8th grade.&nbsp; She then attended Alliance High School graduating in 1984.&nbsp; She was looking forward to attending her 40th year class reunion this summer. While in high school she was active in golf and the flag corps.

After high school, Nancy went through Marine Corps boot camp in Paris Island, SC in the spring of 1985.&nbsp; She was later medically discharged.&nbsp; Upon her return from boot camp, she began dating the love of her life, Wally Sticker.&nbsp; The couple was united in marriage on April 5, 1986 at the Alliance United Methodist Church.

To this union were born three sons, Adam, Wyatt and Casey.&nbsp; As her sons grew, Nancy kept busy chasing her sons various activities.&nbsp; Those included 4-H projects, junior high school football and basketball games, cross country and track meets and wrestling tournaments all over the panhandle or rodeos across the state of Nebraska and beyond.&nbsp; Nancy was always there with her camera and “Mom Bag” to support her boys.&nbsp; She was also active for a long time in the Hemingford FFA Boosters to support her boy’s interests.

Nancy was active for many years in the United Methodist Church Women, helping with many rummage sales, fall bazaars and countless funeral dinners. She was the go-to January Martha for the UMW for many years. She was also active in the Hemingford Rebekah Lodge until it was eventually disbanded.&nbsp;

Later in life, Nancy began working at Bomgaars.&nbsp; She enjoyed her time interacting with her co-workers and customers.&nbsp; She appreciated and enjoyed using her employee discount to spoil her 4 grandchildren.&nbsp;

Nancy is survived by her husband of nearly 38 years, Wally, along with her sons, Adam and his wife Laura and Wyatt all of Alliance.&nbsp; She is also survived by her grandchildren, Anabelle, John, Heidi, Cyrus and one on the way.&nbsp; Survivors also include her brothers, Mike (Sue) Fowler of Virginia and L.J. Fowler of Kentucky, her sisters, Becky Sumey and Mary Hilburn both of Washington, as well as brothers-in-law, Don (Linda) Stricker of Alliance and Rich (Connie) Stricker of Hemingford and sister-in-law, Linda (Lyle) Wood of Wyoming.&nbsp; All will mourn her passing.&nbsp; She will be missed by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her youngest son, Casey, her parents, Byron and Babs, her husband’s parents, Walter and Rosie Stricker and her sister-in-law, Deb Stricker.

Memorial services will be Wednesday, March 27 at 10:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Alliance with Pastor Greg Reed officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the Hemingford FFA, 4-H Camp Scholarship or Hemingford Junior Wrestling.

Scott V. Mutchie, of Alliance, NE, passed away on February 20, 2024.&nbsp; Scott was born July 14, 1956 to John and Elnore Mutchie in Havelock, NE.

Preceded in death by his father: John Mutchie, mother: Elnore Mutchie, brother: Jeff Mutchie, Sister: Jean Hanneman and infant son &nbsp;John Christian.

Scott is survived by his children: Jared Mutchie, Ashley Rash, Shawn Mutchie. Sisters: Yvonne Shelton, Eloise Decker (Trenton) and Aunt: Janet Larchick (Stan); 6 grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Gerald Panwitz, 89, of Kerrville, Texas, passed away on March 15, 2024 in Kerrville.&nbsp;He was born in Alliance, Nebraska to Chris and Edna Panwitz on March 24, 1934. He married Margie Vahrenkamp on August 5, 1956 in Chadron, Nebraska.

He graduated high school in Alliance, Nebraska.&nbsp;He attended the University of Wyoming.&nbsp;He was a veteran serving in the Army.&nbsp;He then farmed and ranched in Alliance, Nebraska until 1984.&nbsp;Following this, he and Margie moved to the San Jose, California area where they managed mobile home communities for 10 years. Following this, they came back to Alliance to retire, travel and remodel the family home.&nbsp;He was active in his home churches, both in California and Alliance for several years.&nbsp;

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Bruce; and sister, Luella.

Survivors include his wife; children, Becki, Beth and Chris; his sister, Connie (Jerry) Underwood; and special friends, Bill Sirvatka and Paula Henry.

Burial will be in the Alliance, Nebraska cemetery at a later date this summer.

Memorials may be given to Peterson Hospice or Hosanna Lutheran Church in Kerrville, Texas. Memorials may also be sent to Wounded Warrior Project.

Russell “Pete” Robert Kendle, 79

Robert William (Bob) Brown, 73, was called to his heavenly home on March 15, 2024 at the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on April 7, 1950 to Neil and Arlene (O’Connell) Brown in Alliance, Nebraska.

Bob graduated from Alliance High School in 1968. He received his Bachelor of Science in Education Degree from Chadron State College in 1972, his Master of Science in Education Degree from CSC in 1976 and his Specialist in Educational Administration and Supervision Degree from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln in 1983.

Bob married Cheri Reed on December 27, 1971 in Alliance, Nebraska. Five children and five grandchildren were born to this union. They are his greatest pride and joy.

Bob was an educator. He taught social studies, was a guidance counselor before becoming a principal and then a superintendent of schools. He started his career in Albion and Genoa, Nebraska before moving to Broken Bow as high school principal in 1984. He was superintendent of schools in Ansley, Sargent and Arnold. He retired in 2010 and he and Cheri moved to Omaha.

Bob enjoyed sports of all kinds. Golf, hunting, fishing, reading and traveling were some of his passions. Time spent with family and friends was his greatest pleasure. He was proud to cheer for his children and grandchildren in all their endeavors. He enjoyed taking the family to Miami for the 1995 Orange Bowl, going to the Master’s Golf Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, being in Dublin on St. Patrick’s Day and in Munich for Oktoberfest, and attending the 50th Super Bowl to cheer the Denver Broncos to the Championship.

Bob was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church and the Nebraska Council of School Administrators. He was a board member for the Nebraska One Box Pheasant Hunt and also served on the Foundation Board of Directors for the hunt.

Bob will always be remembered for his generous and loving spirit.

Bob is survived by his wife of 52 years, daughters Kerri Mason of Denver, CO, Kristi (Kevin) Ahlers of Yutan, NE, son Mark (Amy) of Columbus, NE, grandchildren Jack, Maddie and Rhys Mason, Bryce and Ryker Brown, brother Dick (Gwen) Brown Grand Island, NE, sisters-in-law Karen Brown, Alliance and Kim Dankers, Pleasant Dale, NE, brother-in-law Scott (Sonja) Reed of Columbus, Ohio and many nieces and nephews and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and parents-in-law, Keith and Margie Reed, two infant children Elizabeth and David, his brother Don and brother-in-law Harlan Dankers.

Memorial services will be held at the United Methodist Church in Alliance on Friday, March 22 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Greg Reed officiating. Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.&nbsp;&nbsp; Visitation with the family will be at Bates-Gould Funeral Home Thursday March 21 from 4-6 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Custer County Foundation in Broken Bow, NE.

While going to school he worked as a greens keeper for Scottsbluff Country Club, and also at a body shop until Rudy Stanko moved him to Gordon where he was head of maintenance for the packing plant, the truck stop and the rendering plant, he also worked at GSN Machine shop, Gordon Memorial Hospital, Bomgaars, and at the time of his death he was working at Modern Farm.He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Deborah, daughter Missy York and husband Lloyd, grandchildren Regina Zlomke Lemburg and husband Jason, grandson Raymond Zlomke, step-grandchildren Angel York-Hill, Lee York, Areclia “RC” York-Moralla, 15 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his son John, his parents John and Edna Meller, his father and mother-in-law Raymond and Jean Strodtman.Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 13, 2024, 11:00 am at Chamberlain-Pier Funeral Home.
