Woodson “Woody” Elmer Thompson, age 79, Hyannis, was called home by his Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 16, 2020, surrounded by his family. Born to Merle and Nida (Harp) Thompson in Salem, Oregon on September 5, 1940.

Woody spent his childhood in Lamar, Colorado, then later attended Hyannis High School. In 1958, he was working for John Sibbitt when he met the love of his life, Maria Keegan. They were married June 24, 1961. Woody and Maria worked at the Triangle and Coble ranches before moving to the Pullman ranch, where Woody worked and also trained horses for the Huffman ranch. While working at the Pullman, Woody and Maria welcomed three daughters, Jodi, Cindi and Trudi. Woody and Maria would later move to Squaw Valley ranch where they worked for Ed and Sally Becker for 23 years. Woody loved working at Squaw Valley, he loved to ride his horse across the meadow to the highest hill and admire the view across the valley.

Woody was a true cowboy, not only did he train horses, he also enjoyed team roping and in his earlier years saddle bronc riding. He would later give this up to watch and support his daughters as they began high school rodeo.

When his health began to fail, he would retire from ranch life and move into Hyannis. However, retirement did not suit him. So, he began playing golf and was instrumental with the fund raising and building of the Pelican Beach Golf course. He also continued to help with the Old Timer’s Rodeo in Hyannis.

Woody also worked for Ritchey and CaliCrate, attending many farm and ranch shows selling ear tags and banders for them. These shows took Maria and him to Canada, Kentucky, Kansas, Montana, California, Oklahoma, Texas, South and North Dakota. Through these jobs, he discovered he loved to travel and visit with the ranchers and farmers. Woody never knew a stranger, much to his family’s dismay, he would often pick up hitchhikers and give them rides and money for food. He would greet everyone with a twinkle in his eye, a warm smile, and a firm handshake. His sense of humor and quick wit will be missed every day.

Woody was a man of great faith and lived his life with such integrity! People who knew him, knew that he was an honest man and a hard worker. You could always trust Woody at his word, when he said he was going to do something he did. Woody had a talent for fixing the broken and giving new life to the old. He was admired by many and Dad was always our “hero.”

During the winter, you could always find Woody at the gas station drinking a cup of coffee and playing a game of pitch or in a cribbage tournament with his friends. In the summer, he kept busy going to golf tournaments with his golfing buddies. But when the school year came along, Woody became an avid fan cheering on his grandkids. He attended numerous youth baseball, football, and basketball games, plays and musicals, and even a few volleyball games and dance competitions. He would also follow his grandkids as they went through high school sports. He truly was their greatest fan!!

Woody was very involved in his community. He served as a lector and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Parish Council, Dist. #9 school board member, Lion’s Club, Pelican Beach Golf Club, and a High School Rodeo Director.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Maria, daughters Jodi (Shane) Storer and their children Kyle, Brett, Jeff, and Dane; Cindi (Mace) McGinley and their children Joshua, Daniel, and Scott; and Trudi (Greg) Gottlob and their children Elizabeth and Tyler. He is survived by his sister June Broughton, nieces, nephews, cousins, and the many who considered him “Dad.” He was preceded in death by his father, Merle; mother, Nida; sister, Joanne; and brother-in-law Eldon, “Pudge” Broughton.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, June 15, 2020 11:00am at All Saints Catholic Church in Hyannis with Interment at Hyannis Cemetery.&nbsp; There will be a Rosary recited Monday, June 15, 2020 at 10:00am.

Jackie (Jack) L. Scott, 88, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2020 at The Residency in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.

Jack was born April 15, 1932 in Mexico, Missouri to Paul and Katherine (Spurling) Scott. At the age of 17, Jack made a decision to join the U S Navy with his Father’s blessing.&nbsp; Jack entered into Training Camp at Camp Pendleton in June of 1949 where he attend Dental School and became a Dental Technician. Jack served in Korea as Dental Technician with D Medical Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Division from 1949-1953.&nbsp; Jack later served with the US Naval Reserve from 1953-1978 in Hannibal, Missouri and Cheyenne, Wyoming where he later became a Hospital Medical Corpman. Jack would take his family to California every summer for 6 weeks while he would serve at Camp Pendleton and Coronado during his time with the Naval Reserves as Chief Petty Officer.&nbsp; After his return from Korea, Jack worked for the GM&amp;O Railroad as a Brakeman.&nbsp; Jack later travelled to Alliance, Nebraska where he work the Beet season with CB&amp;Q RR now known as BNSF in 1954.&nbsp; Also, in 1954 Jack met his Partner in Life, Flora F Struble, at the Alliance Skating Rink. After 2 months, Jack and Flora got married in Hot Springs, South Dakota on November 20th, 1954.&nbsp; In 1955, Jack and Flo welcomed their first daughter Denise and in 1959 another daughter, Connie.&nbsp; Jack worked for Kaiser Aluminum Brick Plant in Mexico, Missouri as an Electrician until his decision to move his family to Alliance, Nebraska to work for BNSF Railroad.&nbsp; Jack later became an Engineer for the BNSF and worked for 28 years before retiring in 1997.&nbsp; Jack also obtained his Private Pilot License and his love for flying was evident by his constant eye to sky.

Jack is survived by his wife Flora and his two daughters Denise (Jim) Cunningham and Connie (William) Bosch.&nbsp; He is preceded in death by his parents Paul and Katherine, his brothers Gene, Bob, Boyd and his sister Mary Martin.&nbsp;

Cremation will take place and a service will be held at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery at a later date. In closing, we will always keep him close to our hearts and would like to say as we heard many Service men and women on a recent trip to Camp Pendleton say to Jack, “Thank you for your service, Chief and Semper Fi.”

Ruth Ida (Diefenbach) Hatch, 95, of Alliance, passed away, Saturday, May 23, 2020 at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance.&nbsp;

She was born March 31, 1925 in Lexington, NE, to Ida (Koehn) Diefenbach and Melvin Diefenbach. She graduated from Lexington High School.

Ruth married the love of her life, Virgil Hatch, on March 3, 1946 at the United Methodist Church in Lexington, NE. They were blessed to celebrate their 74th anniversary on March 3, 2020. He survives her. Survivors also include her son, Jerry (Hing Wah, daughter Deb Thiems (Rick, grandsons, Tyler Thiems (Lindsie, and Pat Garrett (Lisa, granddaughters, Ashley Dudden(Jason, Karri (Hatch) Guthmiller, Kay Ying Hatch, Gina Rebillet, 14great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son, Larry Hatch, daughter in law, Anita Hatch, her parents, her sisters, Florence Walker, Vera Hageman, Arlene Kolbo, Emogene Andrews, and brothers, John and Paul Diefenbach.

Ruth was a resident of Alliance for 58 years . She owned and operated Hatch Drug, Ruth’s Hallmark, Radio Shack, and Special Stitches with Virgil and family for 48 years.

Ruth was an active member of the Lexington and Alliance United Methodist Churches and loved her time singing in the choir. Her impact on the community of Alliance included becoming the first female president of the Alliance Chamber of Commerce, as well as, one of the original members of the Soroptimists in Alliance.

If you ever got to taste a meal prepared by Ruth, you know she loved to cook and took joy in seeing everyone finish every last bite. Her love for gardening, especially tending to her roses along with knitting or sewing gifts are passions she has passed on to her family. That was her greatest joy, her family, and the time spent with them. She always looked forward to the gatherings of everyone for birthday dinners and holidays.

A private family service will be held at the United Methodist Church with Pastor Gideon Achi officiating. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium.

Ruth Ida (Diefenbach) Hatch (1925 - 2020

Boyd Ray Nye, age 77 died at his home in Alliance on May 22, 2020 with his family at his side.&nbsp;

Boyd was born November 2, 1942 to William H. (Bill) and Retta (Simpson) Nye in Alliance, NE. He joined his brother, Bob and sisters Doris and Darlene as the third generation to live on the homestead of his grandparent’s William H. Sr. and Lucy Ella (Jennings) Nye Northeast of Alliance.&nbsp; Boyd grew up helping work the farm, riding horses, and doing chores.&nbsp; He and Darlene argued about whose turn it was to clean the chicken house!

Boyd attended Box Butte County Rural School District #3 through the 8th grade. He then attended Alliance High School, graduating in 1960. Following graduation, he moved in to Alliance where he was employed by DeMar trailer company, and later Plains Implement while continuing to help on the farm.

On January 10, 1964 Boyd and Jelinda Christensen were united in marriage at the First Christian Church in Alliance. Their son Barry was born in April of 1968 and in June of 1968, the family moved to Chadron where he became employed by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. In 1971 Boyd became the assistant superintendent of Indian Cave State Park, and the family moved to Schubert, NE.&nbsp; They returned to Box Butte County in 1973 to help work the Nye and Christensen Farms moving onto the Nye homestead where he farmed wheat and raised livestock. During this time he also drove a truck hauling beets and cattle for W. Christie and Howard Herian. In 2008 Boyd and Jelinda “semi-retired” and moved back into Alliance when Barry and his wife Gretchen, and their son Cody moved onto the home place becoming the 4th and 5th generations to live on the ranch.

Boyd enjoyed hunting, fishing, carpentry, welding and following his grandson, Cody’s activities. He loved a good card game with friends, and was known for card tricks, and telling jokes.&nbsp; We think he remembered every joke he ever heard! He was a member of the Alliance Eagles Club and was active in the Alliance Archery Club. Boyd taught archery and hunter safety through the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission for several years.

He is survived by his wife Jelinda, son Barry, daughter in-law Gretchen, and grandson Cody. He is also survived by his sister, Darlene (Jim) Doyle of Gregory, SD, nieces and nephews Celia (David) Weeks, Brent (Anne) Nye, Joleen (Mike) Townsend, Karen (Mark) DeBolt, Carl (Fusun) Sulzbach, Tracy (Jon) Dahlenburg, Jay (Lori) Doyle, and Chad Holmberg. Boyd was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Retta, brother Bob and his wife Bessie, sister Doris and Husband Chuck Sulzbach, niece Lori (Doyle) Holmberg, in-laws John and Esther Christensen, sister in-law Mary Jane McCrery, and niece Rhonda Champion.

A graveside service will be held at Fairview Cemetery on Wednesday May 27th, 2020 at 2:00 PM. In case of rain, please use Jefferson Rd. not Hayes Rd. to travel to the cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Regional West Hospice, or to the family for designation to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission for hunter safety education.

Boyd Ray Nye (1942 -2020

Rosie Irene Stricker, 93, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2020 at Highland Park Care Center.&nbsp;

Rosie was born and raised in Bayard Nebraska on September 24, 1926.&nbsp; This is where Rosie met the love of her life, Walter A. Stricker.&nbsp; She said she always had a bet with her mother that she wouldn't get married until she was 20 years old.&nbsp; On September 29, 1946, 4 days after her birthday they united in marriage.&nbsp; They moved to Alliance in 1948 farming and starting their family.&nbsp; They survived the blizzard of 1949, they both always talked about that.&nbsp;

Rosie was a very God-fearing, kind-hearted, loving woman.&nbsp; She always welcomed friends and family with a hug and some candy!&nbsp; She loved, and was devoted to raising her 5 kids and then helping raise (babysit) her 10 grandchildren.&nbsp;

Rosie was preceded in death by her husband Walter in 2005, her daughter Debra in 2016, and her grandson Casey in 2011, her parents, Jacob and Katherine Martin, 3 brothers and 1 sister.

Rosie Irene Stricker (1926 - 2020

&nbsp;Roger D Smith passed away on April 30, 2020 at his home in Sun City West, Arizona surrounded by his family. Roger was born on June 21, 1944 in Knoxville, Iowa. He was born to Harold and Hattie (Phillips) Smith.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1967, he married Cynthia Fuller and from this union they were blessed with two sons Stephen and Phillip.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Roger had a driven desire for computers and technology. In 1990, he put the in house computer system in Western Heritage Credit Union. He worked for Controlled Data for 30 years out of Rapid City, South Dakota. Roger then retired in October of 2005.

	Roger had many hobbies, but his true love was flying. Roger was a certified pilot for over 30 years. For many years he used his plane for work and pleasure. Roger also enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed playing cards and socializing.&nbsp;

	In July of 2005, Roger was united in marriage to his second wife Sharon Hopp. During their retirement, they enjoyed flying around to many different places. They also enjoyed traveling in their motorhome and spending their winters in Texas and Arizona.

Roger was a member of Crown of Life Lutheran Church in Sun City West, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Cynthia, his sisters Shirley, Lois, and Joyce. He is survived by his wife Sharon, his sons Stephen and wife Jennifer of Severance, Colorado, and Phillip of San Antonio, Texas and one brother Lloyd Smith of Vancouver Island, Canada, step children Brenda and Tommy Abdelnour of Palm Desert, California, Bridget and Mark Vaughn of Alliance, Nebraska, and Steven and Trista Hopp of Alliance, Nebraska and numerous grandchildren and other relatives. Romona Rose Williams Cook passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2020, at the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, Colorado.

She was born March 23, 1939, in Independence, Missouri to Ruby Earl and Elizabeth Ann “Betty” (Holzworth) Culp.&nbsp; She graduated from high school in Buffalo, WY in 1957. She would later earn her Associate in Arts degree from Sheridan College.

She was married to Carlton Lee Williams in Buffalo, WY and to this union five children were born.&nbsp; She later married Lee Roy Cook and to this union a daughter was born.&nbsp;

Her survivors are her children, Carol Cole of Casper, WY, Shelly Williams of Bealeton, VA, Ann Hernandez of Helena, MT, Hayden Williams of Omaha, NE, Phyllis Henry of Aldie, VA and Tracy Cook and husband Jeff Savage of Great Falls, MT and her step-children, Lee Cook, Jr, Bryan Cook and Frankie Cook all of Arkansas.&nbsp; She is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

Surviving siblings include Barney Culp of Alliance, Kay Baker and Joy Woods of Worland, WY along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, her brother, Harry Culp, son-in-law, Dan Cole, brother-in-law, Layton “Bud” Baker and sister-in-law, Florence Culp.&nbsp;

Romona was an avid reader, animal lover and loved traveling. She never met a stranger and could enjoy a conversation with anyone.

The family will have a memorial service at a later date.

Jackie Carson, 85, of Hay Springs passed on April 23, 2020 at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hay Springs.

Jackie was born Jacquelyn Arleen Reed on July 20th, 1934 in Woonsocket, South Dakota to Delbert and Alice (Woodward) Reed. She lived many years in Rapid City, S.D. where she and her first husband William (Bill) Brandt raised their four children. She was very involved with her kids as a leader for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. In the early 80’s she married her 2nd husband, Lyle Carson and eventually they moved to Hay Springs, NE. Jackie worked for the Head Start program in Hay Springs for many years. After she retired she was a “Foster Grandparent” at the Noah’s Ark preschool. She loved children and all the children loved her and affectionately called her “Grandma Jackie”.

Her surviving family includes her children: Debbie (Paul) Parker, Sumter, SC, Mark (Deb) Brandt, Albia, IA, Mike (Cathy) Brandt, Chula Vista, CA, and Tami Thomasson (Jim Hare) Clearfield, UT, as well as her step-children: Sheryl Carson, Colby KS, Mary (Delbert) Hindman, Hay Springs, NE, Mike (Sue) Carson, Las Vegas, NV, and David Carson, North Platte, NE.

She is also survived by 9 grandchildren: Heather Townsend, Bethany Page, Jonathon Brandt, Stephanie Simon, Mikayla Gucilator, Tiffany Coates, Aaron Brandt, David Thomasson, and Alex Thomasson and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by 5 step grandchildren: Shawn Hindman, Tammy Robinson, Alicia Wright, Tara Wilson, and Micki Carson and 10 step great- grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service was held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hay Springs, on April 24th, 2020.

Jackie Carson (1934 - 2020

Larry Eugene Holz, 76, passed away on May 10, 2020, at his home in Alliance, Nebraska.

Larry was born on September 15, 1943, in Beatrice, Nebraska to Bill Holz and Alvina (Vorderstrasse) Holz.

He was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church near Plymouth, Nebraska and confirmed at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Sidney, Nebraska. He graduated from Sidney High School in 1961, attended Sterling Junior College and graduated from Chadron State College in 1967 earning a BA degree in Geography. In 1971 he earned a BS degree in secondary education from Chadron State College.

He and Jan (Brock) Holz were married on September 3, 1966, in Alliance. Larry and Jan lived in Eastern Nebraska moving to Alliance in 1972 where Larry worked for Burlington Northern Railroad until his retirement in August of 2006.

Larry was a member of St. John’s United Lutheran Church, ELCA, where he had served on the council and spent many years as property chairman.

Larry is survived by his wife Jan, daughter, Dana (husband Bill) Pavuk of Grand Island, Nebraska, Son Ryan (wife Jennifer Lanka) of Spearfish, South Dakota, grandchildren Nik Pavuk of Grand Island and Lenora Holz of Spearfish, sister Linda (John) Lindsey of Norman, Oklahoma, sister-in-law Karen Hansen of Alliance, bother-in-law D. Keith Brock (Lourdes) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, aunts Leoda Yost of Crete, Nebraska, and JoAnn Vorderstrasse of Fairbury, Nebraska; nieces, Lisa Halvorson, Sharlene Eddy, Jennifer Robbins, Maria Hanson, Kaylene Sorensen and families and nephews Eric Lindsey, Tim Kumpf, Craig Kumpf and their families and many special cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Bill and Alvina Holz, sister Diane Holz, bother-in-law Don Hansen, nephew-in-law Jim Eddy and many aunts and uncles.

Larry would like everyone to know his faith was instrumental in shaping his life, that he loved his family and friends unconditionally, knowledge is power and most things can be fixed. Larry will be cremated and a private family celebration will be held on May 16, at 10:30 am in the Memorial Garden at St. John’s United Lutheran Church with Pastor Tim Stadem officiating. Memorials may be made to St. John’s Church, Lutheran Family Services or Regional West Hospice.

Larry Eugene Holz (1943 - 2020

Madelyn Christensen Golka Boyer died May 9, 2020 at Highland Park Care Center, Alliance, Nebraska.&nbsp; Due to Covid-19, a private family prayer service and graveside committal will be held Thursday, May 14.&nbsp; Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge of arrangements.&nbsp; A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.&nbsp;

Madelyn was born to Mary (Roes) and Magnus Christensen on June 16, 1928.&nbsp; She lived in the Hemingford and Alliance area most of her life.&nbsp; She graduated from Hemingford High School in 1944; shortly thereafter, she attended business school in Denver, Colorado.&nbsp; After graduating from business school, she worked at the Hemingford Bank.

She married Leonard F. Golka on March 30, 1948; they spent their lives farming and ranching, and raising their six children and enjoying their journeys into adulthood.

After Leonard died in September 1982, Madelyn returned to school and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. After graduating, she was employed at the VA Medical Center in Hot Springs, South Dakota for eight years. She married Ross Boyer on December 5, 1992 in Hot Springs, South Dakota. They lived outside Alliance. They enjoyed traveling, working together at the Bridgeport Museum and Knight’s Museum in Alliance, and pursuing Ross’s book publishing endeavors. Ross died October 2005.&nbsp; Madelyn then moved into Alliance.

Madelyn was an active member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and participated in the Franciscans, Magnificat, and MOMS groups. She volunteered for several years at the Collection Basket.&nbsp;

Madelyn lived for her children and grandchildren.&nbsp; She was an excellent cook and especially enjoyed baking pies. For many years at Christmas, she made several varieties of cookies and candies and would plate them up for businesses, family, neighbors, and friends.&nbsp; She was very creative.&nbsp; She loved making grapevine wreaths and painting craft items for her family and friends.&nbsp;&nbsp; She delighted in taking care of her vegetable and flower gardens over the years.&nbsp; She had a great sense of humor and a joyful, faith-filled heart.&nbsp;

The last months of Madelyn’s life were spent at Highland Park Care Center.&nbsp; Throughout her stay, she always wanted to get well enough to go home.&nbsp; The family is thankful to all the staff at Highland Park Care Center.

Madelyn is survived by her children and step-children and their spouses:&nbsp; Kathleen and Bob McFarland of Grand Island, Nebraska, Barbara Golka (daughter-in-law) of Sacramento, California, Michael and Lori Golka of Calmar, Iowa, Thomas and Maxine Golka of Bertrand, Nebraska, Daniel Golka of Hemingford, Nebraska, Christopher Golka of Catoosa, Oklahoma, Marjory (Margie) McLeod of Osakis, Minnesota and Bill and Janet Boyer of York, Nebraska.&nbsp; Madelyn is also survived by her grand-children John and Molly McFarland, Joshua and Jason Golka, Patsy and Andrew Golka, and Kayla Henderson and step-grand-children JR and Jeremy McFarland, Doug, Dan, and Debi Huston, Cory Ryant and Corissa Forde, Wynn and R.T. Hartshorn, Billy Boyer, and 30 great grandchildren.

Madelyn is also survived by her brother, Don Christensen of Gering, Nebraska; her sister and brother-in-law,&nbsp; Sharon and Bill Engel of Cozad, Nebraska, and a sister-in-law, Janet Oehms of Lincoln, Nebraska.&nbsp;

Madelyn is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Leonard and Ross, her son, Stephen, a sister, Berneice Todd, a brother, Arnold (Bud) Christensen, and sister-in-laws, Jean Christensen and Martha Armstrong.

 </figure>Madelyn Christensen Golka Boyer died May 9, 2020 at Highland Park Care Center, Alliance, Nebraska.&nbsp; Due to Covid-19, a private family prayer service and graveside committal will be held Thursday, May 14.&nbsp; Bates-Gould Funeral Home of Alliance is in charge of arrangements.&nbsp; A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.&nbsp;Madelyn was born to Mary (Roes) and Magnus Christensen on June 16, 1928.&nbsp; She lived in the Hemingford and Alliance area most of her life.&nbsp; She graduated from Hemingford High School in 1944; shortly thereafter, she attended business school in Denver, Colorado.&nbsp; After graduating from business school, she worked at the Hemingford Bank.She married Leonard F. Golka on March 30, 1948; they spent their lives farming and ranching, and raising their six children and enjoying their journeys into adulthood.After Leonard died in September 1982, Madelyn returned to school and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. After graduating, she was employed at the VA Medical Center in Hot Springs, South Dakota for eight years. She married Ross Boyer on December 5, 1992 in Hot Springs, South Dakota. They lived outside Alliance. They enjoyed traveling, working together at the Bridgeport Museum and Knight’s Museum in Alliance, and pursuing Ross’s book publishing endeavors. Ross died October 2005.&nbsp; Madelyn then moved into Alliance.Madelyn was an active member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and participated in the Franciscans, Magnificat, and MOMS groups. She volunteered for several years at the Collection Basket.&nbsp;Madelyn lived for her children and grandchildren.&nbsp; She was an excellent cook and especially enjoyed baking pies. For many years at Christmas, she made several varieties of cookies and candies and would plate them up for businesses, family, neighbors, and friends.&nbsp; She was very creative.&nbsp; She loved making grapevine wreaths and painting craft items for her family and friends.&nbsp;&nbsp; She delighted in taking care of her vegetable and flower gardens over the years.&nbsp; She had a great sense of humor and a joyful, faith-filled heart.&nbsp;The last months of Madelyn’s life were spent at Highland Park Care Center.&nbsp; Throughout her stay, she always wanted to get well enough to go home.&nbsp; The family is thankful to all the staff at Highland Park Care Center.Madelyn is survived by her children and step-children and their spouses:&nbsp; Kathleen and Bob McFarland of Grand Island, Nebraska, Barbara Golka (daughter-in-law) of Sacramento, California, Michael and Lori Golka of Calmar, Iowa, Thomas and Maxine Golka of Bertrand, Nebraska, Daniel Golka of Hemingford, Nebraska, Christopher Golka of Catoosa, Oklahoma, Marjory (Margie) McLeod of Osakis, Minnesota and Bill and Janet Boyer of York, Nebraska.&nbsp; Madelyn is also survived by her grand-children John and Molly McFarland, Joshua and Jason Golka, Patsy and Andrew Golka, and Kayla Henderson and step-grand-children JR and Jeremy McFarland, Doug, Dan, and Debi Huston, Cory Ryant and Corissa Forde, Wynn and R.T. Sister Rita Neyens, 96, passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2020 at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance.

She was born March 7, 1924 in Colome, South Dakota to Ben and Mary (Dohmen) Neyens and was named Mary Helen.&nbsp;

She followed the Lord’s call to the Sisters of St. Francis and entered as a candidate at Marycrest Convent in Denver on August 15, 1943.&nbsp; She professed her vows on August 16, 1944 and took the name of Sr. M. Rita. She professed her Perpetual Vows on August 16, 1947.

Sister Rita became a registered nurse and her early ministry included time at St. Mary’s Hospital in Scottsbluff and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Alliance.&nbsp; She also served at Holy Rosary Mission and St. Francis Mission in South Dakota. In the 1970’s and 80’s she continued nursing at the VA Hospital in Hot Springs, SD.&nbsp; Following her retirement she worked in ministry in Rapid City, SD and O’Neill, NE where she worked in parish ministries and part-time nursing in senior care centers.&nbsp; She returned to Alliance in 2016.

Her survivors are nieces and nephews, including Carol King, Maryann Thompson, Tim King, and niece-in-law, Rosemary King and her Franciscan Sisters.&nbsp;

Her parents, her sisters and brothers-in-law, Adeline and Fred Gassen, Anna and Jim King, her brother and sister-in-law, Jerome and Eddie King and a nephew, Jim M. King preceded her in death.

A wake service and Mass of Christian Burial for her Franciscan family will be held at Marian Chapel. Father Tim Stoner will officiate with burial at the Calvary Cemetery in Alliance.

Irene (Dyer) Snook, age 103, passed away on May 2, 2020 of natural causes at the Ponderosa Villa nursing home in Crawford, Nebraska. She was born on February 20, 1917 to Lorn and Anna Dyer in Bertrand, Nebraska. She was the fifth child of 12 children. Her family moved to the Hemingford/ Crawford area when she was a young child. She married Glenn Snook on October 28, 1938 and together they had three children. She is survived by her daughter Glenda (Ken) Hutton of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Lorn (Tuffy) Snook of Wayside, Nebraska. She has also survived by four grandchildren, Lorie (Todd) Wagner of Siloam Springs, AR, Damon (Toni) Hutton of Enterprise, AL, Devin (Lauren) Hutton of Missoula, MT and Chance Snook of Whitney, NE; six great-grandchildren, Brittany, Kaitlin and Rugby Wagner of Siloam Springs, AR and Ashley, Ryanne and Colby Hutton of Enterprise, AL along with one sister in-law, Frances Dyer of Crawford, NE, and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, infant son, parents, siblings and many friends and relatives. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

James LaVern Hankins passed away on May 1st, 2020 at the age of 78. He was born on December 2, 1941 in Rushville, Nebraska to Jim and Violet (Eckerle) Hankins. He graduated from Hay Springs High School in 1959. Upon graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Bachmann on June 4th, 1961. With this union was born two daughters: Karla and Kim.

LaVern began employment at Northwest Rural Public Power in 1966, where he filled many roles during his 38 years of service. He was very dedicated to the community, having served on the board of the Pioneer Manor and Lister Sage Community Center. He served as a City Council member and was a volunteer for many years at the Hay Springs Fire Department. LaVern was very active in the building of the Zion Lutheran Church and later served as the deacon, trustee, and treasurer of the church. He spent many hours improving the Hay Springs golf course, planting trees, and establishing the clubhouse.

LaVern was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, never missing any of their activities.

During his lifetime, he enjoyed many activities such as team roping, painting ceramics, golfing, traveling and camping. He was a sports enthusiast and was a big supporter of the Hay Springs Hawks, Cornhuskers and the bull riding. He will always be remembered as a man with high values, great sense of humor and willingness to help others.

LaVern was preceded in death by his parents, sister; Betty and her husband Tom Brownlow, sister-in-law; Saundra Bachmann Roberts and daughter; Karla Hankins Letcher.

LaVern is survived by his wife; Barbara, daughter; Kim, son-in-law; Lyndall, brothers Jerry (Judy) &amp; Monte (Brenda, grandsons Tanner and Drew, in-laws, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 6th, 6:00 – 7:00 PM at the Zion Lutheran Church. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 7th at 10:00 AM at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hay Springs, NE. Arnold Dean Jensen&nbsp;(Arnie, aged 76, passed away at home, in Rapid City on Sunday morning, May 3, 2020.

He is survived by his lifelong love of 54 years, Linda&nbsp;Herbert&nbsp;Jensen.&nbsp;They were united in marriage in Alliance, NE on June 12, 1965.&nbsp;Their&nbsp;children and spouses include Theron (Shari) Jensen of Littleton, CO, Peter (Jill) Jensen of Rapid City, SD, Stacia (Mike) Daniel of San Antonio, TX, Christa (Chuck) Marx of Ostego, MN, Chelsie (Jason) Huseman&nbsp;of&nbsp;College Station, TX, Brandon (Crystal) Jensen of&nbsp;Minot, ND, and Adam Jensen&nbsp;of Omaha, NE. He was the proud grandpa of 12 grandchildren including Christian, Lauren and Madison&nbsp;Jensen, Hayden and Amelia Jensen, Ashleigh Daniel, Weston and Mason Marx, Caleb Huseman, Trena Ackerman,&nbsp;Kasey Jensen and Keyonna Belstead.

Arnie&nbsp;farmed near Hemingford, NE&nbsp;and was a crop inspector and&nbsp;adjuster&nbsp;for&nbsp;nearly&nbsp;47 years. Arnie’s&nbsp;unconditional&nbsp;love of people,&nbsp;passion for life, support to his family,&nbsp;and his faithfulness to his Lord never&nbsp;wavered. He lived&nbsp;a life of deep&nbsp;faith openly, and passed&nbsp;that legacy&nbsp;on to his children, grandchildren, friends, family, and most every person he met. Arnie is standing before his Lord, breathing deeply of heaven’s air, swapping stories&nbsp;with&nbsp;saints who went before him, looking for the best fishing hole and tending beautiful gardens. We are all looking forward to seeing him again.

Mary Yvonne (Krueger) Olson 79 of Rushville passed away Saturday, May 2, 2020 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.

Mary was born the third oldest child of Ralph and Ruby (Lymath) Krueger on August 26, 1940 in Alliance.&nbsp;&nbsp; She was the younger sister of John and Fred and later became a big sister to Calvin, Bill, Ruby and Leta.

Mary worked at EHR from 1974 until 1977, there she met her true love Roger Olson, who won a bet with Ruby when she said yes to go on a date with him.&nbsp; Roger teased her about running across the state line to Elope and several other things for 35 amazing years. They shared an amazing love that usually only happens in fairy tales! Roger and Mary were married in alliance on February 18 1977. Nine months later on December 2nd, their daughter Lori was born on Roger's birthday. About 7 years later on November 17th their son Cory was born rounding out their family.

Mary and Roger moved to her dream house that Roger built for her 20 miles from the nearest town of Hemingford. She adapted fast to becoming a farm wife, raising chickens, gathering eggs. bottle feeding calves and sheep and cooking for brandings and the sheep shearer's. Her potato salad and apple pies were always a favorite! She taught her kids how to cook and the secret to a good pie crust. She cooked and canned and raised her kids and no one ever left her house without a kiss,&nbsp; a hug or a full tummy!

Mary is survived by her kids Lori (Edward) Hankinson of Hay Springs Cory Olson (Kate Sickle) of Spearfish SD, her step daughter Gaylene Cranford of Greeley, CO.&nbsp; She is also survived by her sisters, Ruby (Mike) O'Connor of Hemingford and Leta (Mike) Cox of Alliance and her grandkids Amber, Lynn, Jimmy, Jesse, Bradley, Harley, Grace and Jacob and her grand dogs Annabelle, Roo and Jasper! She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, John, Fred, Calvin and Bill her beloved husband, Roger her granddaughter, Cassandra Hankinson.

Mary Yvonne (Krueger) Olson (1940 - 2020



Beryl Clare Harrington, formerly of Scottsbluff, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 21 in Thornton, Colorado. She had recently celebrated her 98th birthday in February, surrounded by her family, including children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and had a chance to watch the birds in the back yard, one of her favorite things to do. A graveside service for immediate family only will be held at the Mitchell Cemetery with a memorial service to follow in Mitchell when circumstances permit. She was born in Gering on February 19, 1922 to Ralph and Ethel (Foster) Frailey and was the eldest of five children, Kenneth, Frank, Ailene (Beach) and Anne (Plaster). She married Norman Harrington June 19, 1953 in Mitchell. After she received her Associate’s degree, she became a schoolteacher for many years. She and Norman grew their family, adopting two Korean baby girls and a Lakota Sioux baby boy into their home.

She is survived by her husband Norman and their three children Susan Harrington (Todd Anderson, Linda Hagemann (Ed, and Robert; grandchildren Susan’s (Sam, Andrea, Jennifer, Daniel, Linda’s (Melanie, Matthew, Madison) and Robert’s (Joshua and Jeramy, as well as ten great grandchildren.

Her parents; siblings Kenneth and Frank and grandson Scott predeceased her.

Beryl was a compassionate person with a lovely sense of humor, even when times were difficult. She loved her family dearly and will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her.

Beryl Clare Harrington, formerly of Scottsbluff, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 21 in Thornton, Colorado. She had recently celebrated her 98th birthday in February, surrounded by her family, including children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and had a chance to watch the birds in the back yard, one of her favorite things to do. He grew up in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, graduating from high school in 1942, enlisting in the Army Air Corps, and serving the remainder of World War II in the Philippines, ending as the Sgt Major in charge of the Army Airways Communications system in Manila. After the war, he worked many years for the FAA in Air Traffic Control, including postings in the Panama Canal Zone, Alaska and throughout the western US. He married Beryl Clare Frailey in Mitchell, Nebraska on June 19, 1953. He was introduced to Beryl by her brother Kenneth, who he met and became friends with during the war. Norman and Beryl grew their family, adopting two Korean baby girls and a Lakota Sioux baby boy into their home.

Norman was a great storyteller, an avid reader, and loved tennis, which he excelled at in high school, played into his eighties, and watched until his death. He told many stories of how it was to grow up in a logging family, working, hunting and fishing in rural Idaho during the Great Depression. He had a great sense of humor, and it often popped up during his storytelling when he would even make himself chuckle. The most important people in his life were his family, who he loved dearly. He treasured family gatherings with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and was able to have such a gathering for his birthday in March.

Norman Eugene Harrington (1924 - 2020

Merlyn Wayne Fiscus, 83, of rural Bayard, passed away on March 2, 2020 at the Morrill County Community Hospital at Bridgeport. Merlyn was born July 14, 1936 to Merle “Hans” and Evelyn (Petersen) Fiscus. He attended country school north of Bayard, and graduated from Bayard High School with the Class of 1954.

After high school, Merlyn worked on ranches in the Sandhills around Alliance, Nebraska. On a blind date he met the love of his life, Vicki Sallee. They were married in Alliance on January 24, 1960. Merlyn served in the Nebraska National Guard from 1958-1961.

Merlyn and Vicki lived in Scottsbluff following their marriage where he was the assistant manager at the Woolworth Store. In an effort to be closer to Vicki’s family, they moved to Aurora, Illinois where he was a welder for Austin-Western. From there they moved to Sioux County, Nebraska where Merlyn worked for the Watson Ranch.

The Sandhills called his name once again and he began working on one of the Rush Creek Ranches between Hyannis and Whitman. A horse roll-over broke his leg in 1972 and he moved his family back to the Valley. He welded at Lockwood’s, farmed for his uncle, and began his own business, Fiscus Custom Farming. He plowed crop ground and cut and baled hay in Morrill and Scotts Bluff Counties from 1972-2016. There aren’t many fields between Bayard and Scottsbluff that didn’t receive his care at one time or another.

Merlyn was a cowboy, a farmer, and a Husker and Bronco football fan. He enjoyed John Wayne movies, Marty Robbin’s music, and Gunsmoke. His truest joy and source of pride came from time spent with his family. He never knew a stranger and the coffee was always on.

Merlyn is survived by his wife of 60 years, Vicki; sons Gene (Katie (Fries)) Fiscus of Ardmore, SD and Jody (Karla (Brisco)) Fiscus of Bayard; daughter Becki Fiscus of Bayard; grandchildren Jeri (Jesse McConkey) Ross, Jessica Fiscus, Jason (Ashley) Fiscus, Michael Fiscus, Tyler Fiscus, Kaylie Fiscus, Victoria Huff, and Hayden Huff; great-grandchildren Ryder Ross, Madilyn McConkey, and Dally Fiscus; brother Larry (Sharon) Fiscus; sister Linda Wilkins; sister-in-law Sharon Fiscus; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Merlyn Wayne Fiscus (1936 - 2020

Bob Waggener passed from this earth on April 30, 2020 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, NE at the age of 92.

Robert Leonard Waggener was born the 13th of 14 children on November 8, 1927 in Council Bluffs, IA to Alonzo Irvin and Elizabeth Tena (Van Dyke) Waggener.&nbsp; The family moved to Chadron, NE where Bob attended Chadron City Schools.&nbsp; He served in the US Army during the time of the Korean conflict enlisting in April 1946.

Robert married Helen Ilene Baird, his wife of almost 66 years, on May 29, 1954 in Broadwater, NE.&nbsp; To this union were born three boys—Harry Eugene, Randy Ray and Paul Lavern.&nbsp; Bob was a great provider for his family and a dedicated track welder for the Chicago &amp; Northwestern Railway, retiring after 44 years of service on October 31, 1989.&nbsp; He was a skilled workman building his family a home and many outbuildings on their acreage near Chadron.&nbsp; He enjoyed gardening and mechanics and was always helping others with their projects.

He was a life-time member of VFW Lodge 1375 and American Legion Post12.&nbsp; He was also active in the First Congregational Church UCC and as a past RSVP volunteer.&nbsp;

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, son Paul and four brothers and seven sisters.

Robert is survived by his wife Helen; brothers Floyd of Chadron and Kenneth of Alameda, CA; sons Harry of Chadron and Randy (Rene) of Alliance, NE; grandchildren Rayna (Dan) Woodward of Rapid City, SD and Ryan Waggener of Aurora, CO and one great grandson, Samuel Isaac Woodward.

A public viewing will be Monday, May 4 from 5 to 8 PM at Chamberlain Chapel with a family service on Tuesday, May 5 which will be streamed and recorded.&nbsp; Interment will be at the Greenwood Cemetery.&nbsp; A community memorial service is planned at a future date.&nbsp; Memorials are suggested for the American Legion Post 12 or the First Congregational Church Fur Trade Days Ice Cream Social (for missions).

Doane Dubry of Chadron passed away Monday, April 27, 2020, at Ponderosa Villa in Crawford. He was 88.

Funeral services will be Thursday, May 7 at 2 p.m. at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron with Pastor Russ Seger officiating. Burial with military honors will follow and will be at Fairview Cemetery in Rushville.

Doane was born May 30, 1931, to George and Esther (Dickenson) Dubry in Anselmo, NE, and grew up in Grant county.&nbsp; He graduated from Hyannis High School in 1950 and enlisted in the US Navy. After training in San Diego, CA, he worked on electrical and power projects and was a small craft operator in Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands, 39th parallel, Korea, and Yokomama, Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1953 and returned to Whitman, NE where he worked as a ranch hand.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In May 1954, Doane married Betty Winters. In 1955, Doane enlisted in the US Air Force and served at several stateside bases. He also spent three years in Okinawa, Japan and one year in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1971 with just over 20 years of total active military service. Doane, Betty and their two children then settled in Chadron where Doane worked for ABC Electric for 35+ years. Doane and Betty were married over 57 years before her passing in 2012.

Doane was a member of the VFW,&nbsp; American Legion, Air Force Sergeants Assoc, Retired Enlisted Assoc., and the BPO Elks.&nbsp; He called Bingo at the Elks for many years before it closed. Doane was a kind and generous man who was always willing to help anyone who needed something. He loved his family and especially his granddaughters who, as young children, spent many memorable summers with him and their grandmother.

Doane is survived by his step-sister Joyce Sloyer of Casper, WY; half-brother Thomas Dubry of Norfolk, NE; son George (Cheryl) Dubry of Colorado Springs, CO; daughter Charleen Wyman of Houston, TX; grandchildren Alicia (Justin) Rastberger of Spotsylvania, VA, Tara Wyman of Baltimore, MD, and Tyler Kleidon of Eagle, CO; and great-grandchildren Jett, Ayden, and Jaxx Rastberger.

He was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Meryl Dubry, wife Betty, and sister Georgia May Miller.

Doane Dubry (1931 - 2020

Ronald Soester, 76, passed away on April 22, 2020, at Custer Senior Care in Custer, South Dakota, after a brief battle with cancer.

Ronald Robert Soester was born at home, October 28, 1943, on the Iliff place in Sioux County, eight miles southwest of Crawford, Nebraska. He was the sixth of seven children born to Robert L. and Ruby (Randall) Soester.

He received his elementary education in rural schools in Dawes and Box Butte counties and graduated from Crawford High School in 1961. He attended the University of Wyoming and graduated from Chadron State College.

Ronald entered the Army in October, 1961. He was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado; Fort Leonard wood, Missouri and spent two and a half years in Darmstadt, Germany. He was honorably discharged in October, 1964.

He began driving truck while stationed in Germany and thus his truck driving career was launched. He drove over the road for many years and later drove for several local companies, finally retiring in 2019.

Ronald married Janeta Williams on February 25, 1966. One son, L.I., was born to them. L.I. passed away a few hours after birth on July 10, 1966. Ronald and Janeta were later divorced.

On December 1, 1970, Ronald and Faye Evans were married. They were later divorced.&nbsp;

Ronald's survivors include siblings, Dwain Soester, Wilma Hack, Lola Garner, Hazel Reinmuth and Carol (Jim) Stolldorf and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister, sister-in-law, Edda Mae Soester, brothers-in-law, Don Garner, Dale Reinmuth and Russell Hack and his infant son, L.I.

At his request, cremation has taken place and no services will be held. Burial will be in the Crawford Cemetery beside his infant son, L.I.

John Edward Wentworth was born at home on April 6, 1935 in Riverview, Nebraska to Norris Edward Wentworth and Emma (Zeigler) Wentworth for the price of three wagons of wood. His family farmed in Nebraska until August of 1950 when they relocated to Evant, Texas due to a sister’s health. He passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2020 in Chadron, Nebraska.

John wanted to go to college and was unable to do so. As his children were growing up he repeatedly said, “when you go to college…” His four children and their spouses all have degrees, many receiving advanced degrees, as do many of his grandchildren.

He moved to Fort Worth and went to work for the railroad as a switchman around 1955 and worked there until 1964.

He then went to work for the Texas Prison System until March of 1967 when he moved to a rural farm west of Brampton, North Dakota with his parents. They ran a cattle ranch and planted grain and row crops. John met Beth (Peterson) Wentworth, and they were married on November 28, 1976. While Beth went back to college, John stayed between the farm and Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 2007, John retired from the farm and moved to Chadron, Nebraska.

John was active in the United Methodist Church of Cogswell, Oakes, and Chadron; the Masonic Lodge in Forman, North Dakota; and the District 26 North Dakota Democratic Party. Many will remember John for his love of overalls, cups of coffee and doughnuts or pie, advice given on any subject (even if you didn’t ask for it, and his sweet tooth for always having candy to handout. As a friend stated, “he was a good man who tried to do right, as he was given the light to see it.”

John is survived by his wife, Beth of Chadron, NE. Four children: Debbie Wentworth (Mansfield, TX, Jim (Karen) Wentworth (El Paso, TX, Patricia (David) Palmer (El Paso, TX, and Ed (Maureen) Wentworth (Oakes, ND). Seven Grandchildren: Michelle (Steven) Boyles (Odessa, TX, Katherine Wentworth (Austin, TX, David Wentworth (El Paso, TX, Kenneth and Elizabeth Palmer (El Paso, TX, and Estella and Franklin Wentworth (Oakes, ND). Three sisters: Jean Fox (Lampasas, TX, Retha Spake (Hurst, TX, and Lila (Allen) Robbins (West Worth Village, TX). And many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He will be missed, but we will all hold close our memories of him.A memorial service will be on Monday, May 4, 2:00 pm at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron, Nebraska and a gravesite service on Wednesday, May 6, 10:30 am at Oakes View Cemetery in Oakes, North Dakota. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association.
