Donna Louise Avenger, aged 91, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2024, at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance. Born on December 24, 1932, in San Luis Obispo, CA, she was the daughter of Alfonzo Emery and Pearl Evelyn (Driscol) Mallagh. On April 9, 1954, in San Jose, CA, Donna united in marriage with William A. Avenger.

Donna is survived by her children: Marc A. (Susie) Avenger of Indianapolis, IN, Charles D. Avenger of Denver, CO, Donald V. (Michelle) Avenger of Spokane, WA, Carolyn (James) Stratton of Mountain View, CA, and Margaret (Patrick) Cain of Alliance. She leaves behind 12 grandchildren: Jordan, Carolyn, Rosie, Marc, Andrea, Philip, Margaret, Ann Marie, Dustin, Tyler, Amanda, and Patrick, and 6 great-grandchildren: Everett, Ayla, Eleanor, Lex, Maudi, and Dro. She is also survived by her sister, Ramona McBeth of San Luis Obispo, CA.

Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband William, her sister Margaret, and her great-granddaughter Rosalie.

Donna cherished her family and played an active role in their lives. She had a distinguished career as a rehabilitation nurse, specializing in the care of patients with head injuries, strokes, and joint replacements. Donna brought a positive attitude to every life turn and cared deeply for those she knew. She was an avid reader, an accomplished cook, a talented rug hooker, and a birding enthusiast.

The family would like to thank the staff at Highland Park Care Center for their loving community and tender care over the past six years.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 27, at 10:00 a.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel, with Pastor Garry Schick officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Friday from 4-6 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made to Alliance Senior Services Center, 212 Yellowstone Ave., Alliance, NE.

Patricia Ann (Myers) Menuey, born August 20, 1928, passed quietly away at Highland Park Care Center on Sunday, July 21, 2024 in Alliance, Nebraska. She was born, raised and lived in Alliance all those 95 years.

For 61 years, she was married to the love of her life, Lance Menuey. Pat, often described by her friends as a lovely lady, had many talents, mother, bookkeeper, interior designer, organizer of events, seamstress and grandmother. But the talent most enjoyed by family and neighbors was her ability to bake cookies, especially extraordinary snickerdoodles. For the family, Christmas was not Christmas unless you received a box of homemade cookies. The cookie jars were never empty. We will miss seeing her smile and the twinkle in her eye, but thankfully memories live on forever.

She is survived by her daughters, Connie (Dennis) McCullah and MelloDe McCart; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great, great-grandchildren. Pat was preceded in death by her husband Lance and son, Jeff.

Memorials may be given to Highland Park Care Center’s Memory Support Unit.

Gretchen L. (Hawley) Garwood, age 96, of Alliance, Nebraska passed away Friday, July 19, 2024, at Highland Park Assisted Living.

Gretchen was born March 29, 1928, in Alliance, Nebraska to O. M. “Brigg”,and Neva (Beal) Hawley. Gretchen grew up in Alliance working along side her parents, sister, and brother to deliver milk from their dairy farm. After graduation from Alliance High School, Gretchen then pursued a degree at the Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Missouri.

On September 5, 1948, Gretchen was united in marriage to Max Garwood in Alliance, Nebraska, and was blessed to have been married for 63 years. To this union four children were born- Mike, Janet, Roger, and Tim.

Much of Gretchen’s life was spent volunteering for the betterment of others. In her early years, Gretchen volunteered as a Cub Scout Leader, 4-HLeader, Job’s Daughters, United Methodist Women, Methodist Board of Trustees, Box Butte Art Society, Boys’ Ranch Board of Directors, PEO, and BBGH Auxiliary. She was a member of the United Methodist Church for 70-plus years.

To pass the time while caring for her son, Mike, after his accident in 1973, Gretchen started to paint. For the next 30-plus years her artistic abilities improved and flourished. Her artistic creations have hung on the walls of relatives, friends, acquaintances, and businesses. Gretchen was instrumental in bringing about the Carnegie Arts Center in Alliance. Her dream began in 1985 and along with other Alliance residents in the idea of an arts center was formed to provide cultural experiences for all ages. The Carnegie Library Building was scheduled for demolition and before that could happen, the 1911 building was purchased for $24,000. Grants were written, local support was received, and over $250,000 was spent on renovation. In March of 1993, after two years of legal work and six years of remolding, a grand opening was held. In 2008, the west wing was dedicated as the Gretchen Garwood Gallery. Gretchen served on the board of directors and the endowment committee. The Carnegie Arts Center continues to be a testament to her devotion.

In 2000, Gretchen received the Diane Nelson Volunteer of the Year in the Arts Award. She, along with 11 others, was honored at the Nebraska First Lady, Stephanie Johanns' luncheon.

Gretchen leaves behind, daughter, Jan and Alan Joslin of Chanhassen, Minnesota; daughter-in-law, Mary Garwood, her children, Stephanie and Levi McConkey, their children Ashlynn, Gavin, and Jaxon of Gering, Nebraska, and Jennifer and Garret McGraw of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; son, Tim and Shannon Garwood of Alliance, Nebraska, children Shaun Garwood, his step children Tallulah and Elliott Blender of Parker, Colorado; Kelly and Aaron Warehime, their children Emma and Holden of Omaha, Nebraska; Erin Garwood of Merriam, Kansas. Also, nieces and nephews, Jolene McGinnis, Wayne Akert, JR and Nancy Akert, Sherry and Ron Jackson, Kay and Bill Garner, and many great nieces and nephews.

Gretchen was preceded in death by her husband Max Garwood, sons Mike and Roger Garwood, parents, brother, and sister.

Memorial services will be on Friday, July 26, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Alliance United Methodist Church, Alliance, Nebraska. Gretchen, a talented artist, created beautiful paintings full of color. In celebration of her love of the arts, her family invites everyone to wear bright colors to her service. All are welcome to join the family for conversation and a light meal following the service at West Side Events Center, Alliance, Nebraska. Private interment will be held later at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery, Alliance, Nebraska.

Wade L. Burnham, 63, passed away on July 9, 2024 at his home in Alliance, Nebraska.

He was born October 13, 1960 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Gerald Bruce and Aloha Dorothy (Wildfeuer) Burhnam.&nbsp;

Wade was retired from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad and a 30 year resident of Alliance.

He is survived by his children, Katie (Andy) Gillen of Ogallala, NE, Anne Burnham of Cheyenne, WY and Isaac Burnham of Dallas, TX and his grandchildren, Carter, Quenten, Lincoln, Jett and Rex.&nbsp; He is also survived by his brothers, Alan, Ross and Bruce of Sioux Falls, SD and his sisters, Darcy (Keith) Heidebrecht of Emerson, NE and Fay Burnham of Sioux Falls, SD and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gary C. Lawrence, 73, died Friday, December 22, 2023 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.  A celebration of Gary’s life will be held Saturday, July 27, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at Haven on the Bricks, 508 Box Butte Ave., Alliance, Nebraska, 69301.  Mr. Randy Scheidies will officiate.

He was born March 12, 1950 in Hay Springs, Nebraska to Clifford E. and Donna (Westlake) Lawrence.

He graduated from Hay Springs High School in 1968.&nbsp; On July 27, 1974 he married Becky L. Russell at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow, Nebraska.

Gary was a history buff. He taught ninth grade Social Studies at the Alliance Public Schools for two years after earning his bachelor's degree from Chadron State College in 1978. He then went to work as an electrician for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway for many years. He was a Cub Scout Den and Pack Leader for Pack 207 for three years. Gary knew a lot about nature and enjoyed going for rides in western Nebraska to see the wildlife. He enjoyed fishing for pan fish and time with his fishing buddies. He was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan no matter the sport! He was a loving husband and dad and will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Becky Lawrence of Alliance; his son, Brian Lawrence of Casper, WY; his mother, Donna Lawrence of Hay Springs; his sister, Judy (Lewis) McKenney of Hay Springs; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Randy (Nancy) Scheidies and family of Minden and Dennis (Barb) Cramer and family of Broken Bow.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his father, his niece Shannon McKenney, and his great niece, Nikki Scheidies.

Hilda K. Leachman passed away Thursday, July 11, 2024 at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance, NE at the age of 97 ½ years old.

She was born on December 6, 1926 to Knud and Rena (Rossen) Thomsen in Frontier County, Nebraska. She grew up in the Curtis area and graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture High School in 1944.&nbsp; Hilda taught for one year with her Normal School Certificate.

Hilda was united in marriage to Marlin Edwards. To this union 5 children were born, Marlin, Donald, Larry, Sharon and Kathy.&nbsp; In 1959 she was united in marriage to Jacob “Jake” Leachman and two children, Teresa and John were born to this union.

Hilda enjoyed a life of volunteerism. She was a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church where she served on numerous committees, quilted in the basement and helped in the beginning years of the pre-school program.&nbsp; Hilda was also a member of RSVP, delivered Meals on Wheels, American Legion Auxiliary and was always good for 2 dozen cookies for whatever group called.

She is survived by her children and their spouses, Marlin and Joni, Donald and Rosezella, Larry and Cynthia, Thomas, Kathy, Teresa and John and Brenda.&nbsp; She was also blessed by 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.&nbsp; Waiting to greet her alongside her Heaven Father are her husband, Jake, her parents Knud and Rena, her daughter, Sharon, her son-in-law, Larry, her granddaughter, Christine and her great-grandson, Gage along with a host of other family members and friends.

Hilda, like so many of her generation, held a deep feeling of gratitude for the men and women who served in the military.&nbsp; She asked in lieu of flowers that memorials be given to the Sallows Military Museum or the Veterans State Cemetery at Alliance Foundation.

Terry Snyder (1945 - 2024)

Kelsey Lynn Bridge, daughter of Kirby and Kathy Bridge, sister to Kalli and Kinzie, passed away June 27, 2024 at Box Butte General Hospital in the arms of her mom and dad, leaving an irreplaceable hole in the hearts of her family.

Kelsey’s gorgeous brown hair, that her mom always fixed so expertly, her big beautiful eyes, as well as the huge smile she gave when she was happy were signature traits.&nbsp; Kelsey loved the sound of her mom, dad, and sister’s voices, music, noise and commotion.&nbsp; Some of her best laughs were in the midst of what others would have called chaos and often at night while her dad, mom and sisters were trying to sleep.

Kelsey was born May 8, 1996 and throughout Kelsey’s life she was cared for by many amazing caregivers, first and foremost her mom and dad.&nbsp; Her parents provided her a warm and loving home, taking amazing care of her throughout her entire life.&nbsp; She could not have asked for better and more loving care than she received from her parents, sisters, and grandparents.&nbsp; Lois Meier was a blessing from heaven for Kelsey and her family, providing excellent care, love and support.&nbsp; Kelsey’s Grandma Margaret and Grandma Patsy provided unconditional love and care through her life.

Kelsey began school in August of 2002, traveling to and from school with her favorite bus driver, Ross.&nbsp; He played her all kinds of music; whatever would make her smile.&nbsp; She was loved by her teachers, aides, and her classmates, celebrating birthdays and holiday parties during her school years.

Kelsey loved van rides, softball games, parades, fireworks, and all music, especially twangy music.&nbsp; Her eyes would light up whenever she heard her mom and dad, oftentimes followed by a big smile.&nbsp; Kelsey and her Grandpa Paul had a very special bond. She loved watching football games with her grandpa and hollering for the opposing team.

The staff at Pioneer Manor fell in love with Kelsey, providing a loving and supportive environment, as well as the specialized care she needed. Kelsey and her family so appreciated the excellent and loving care she received while she was there.

Kelsey’s smiles and laughter will be missed by all who knew her.&nbsp; As Lois shared with Kirby and Kathy, Kelsey now has her angel wings and is able to do all the things her body prevented her from doing while she was here with us.&nbsp; She was welcomed to Heaven by her Grandpa and Grandma Rick and Patsy Bridge.&nbsp;

Kelsey is survived by her loving parents, Kirby and Kathy Bridge and her sisters, Kalli and Kinzie, her Grandma Margaret (Larry) Idleman and her Grandpa Paul Osborn, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.&nbsp;

Funeral services will be Saturday, July 6 at 2:00 p.m. at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Richard Mueller officiating.&nbsp;

Richard (R.J.) McCune passed away on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at the age of 76.

He was born in Ravenna, Nebraska to Lyle and Hazle McCune on February 28, 1948.

Faron Ray Schock was born March 4, 1972 to Lynn and Joe. He had three older&nbsp;siblings, Bill, Jerry and Jenny. He was married to Sheila who brought two wonderful&nbsp;children, Carissa and Jake, into the family. Then they had two other wonderful&nbsp;children, Brycen and Ava. Unfortunately, Brycen preceded him in death in&nbsp;November of 2020.

Faron graduated from Hemingford Public Schools in 1989. He loved wrestling,&nbsp;football and softball and was good at all of them. He placed at state in wrestling and&nbsp;volunteered time after he graduated to coach the kids. He worked for the Burlington&nbsp;Northern Railroad for almost 30 years. Faron loved his job, his family, and his&nbsp;puppies. Not necessarily in that order.

Faron was passed away on June 20, 2024, in his home.&nbsp; Faron will be put to rest with his son Brycen at the City of Alliance Cemetery. The memorial service will be later in the year when the temperature calms down. If anyone wishes to give a memorial donation, please send it to the Alliance Volunteer Fire Department. In the meantime, lift up a beer and a piece of pizza in&nbsp;salute of a great man and reminisce about the time we spent with him: the good, the&nbsp;bad, and the ones you don’t brag about.

Frances Lane Marsh, better known as Cindy, passed away peacefully in her sleep June 2nd, 2024 at Crestview Care Center in Chadron Nebraska, due to liver cancer.&nbsp;

Cindy was born July 11th, 1946, to Herbert Eugene Morley and Frances Lane Jenkins. She had three brothers…Patrick, Roy and Ralph. Her parents and all three brothers predeceased her, as did her husband of 49 yrs, Barry Douglas Marsh. Also her youngest daughter Toni Young.

Cindy was a hard worker and took great joy in keeping a clean home and cooking delicious home cooked meals. She loved her family deeply and would do anything for them even if it meant sacrifice on her behalf.

Cindy is survived by her eldest daughter, Tracie Benthin and her husband Kevin Benthin, her elder daughter Kristine Bridges, and her now youngest daughter Tammy McGaa as well as numerous grand children, great grand children including Athena Marrie Gendron, her Great Great Granddaughter born shortly before she passed away, as well as nephews and nieces.

Her ashes will be placed next to her husband at the National Cemetery by Ft Meade where they both had always planned it should be done.

Nick Lecher, a man of integrity, strength, and humor, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2024, in Port St. Lucie, FL, at 4:23 AM. Born in Chadron, Nebraska, Bernard Nicolas Lecher Jr. graduated from Crawford High School in 1979. He pursued higher education at Chadron State College, earning his BS in Social Studies in 1984.

In 1986, Nick married the love of his life, Liz (Oates) Lecher, in Blytheville, Arkansas. Liz, an ESE teacher at Port St. Lucie High School, stood by his side for 38 wonderful years. Nick is survived by his brothers Michael (Diana) Lecher and Chris (Christy) Lecher, along with his cherished nieces and nephews: Alex Smith, Jessica Lecher-Wasson, Sarah Lecher, Keely Lecher, Ashley Lecher, Taylor Oates, and Seth Oates. His loyal French Bulldog, Jake E., was a constant companion and source of joy. He is predeceased by his parents Bernard and Harriet Lecher.

In 1988, Nick and Liz moved to Florida, where Nick embarked on a long and impactful career as a teacher at Port St. Lucie High School. From 1988 to 2024, he inspired countless students with his passion for education and his remarkable sense of humor. In 2003, Nick expanded his professional endeavors into the financial sector, specializing in fixed annuities and securities. He successfully managed over 1,000 clients, earning their respect and trust.

Nick had a love for golf, engaging conversations about finances, and leisurely Sundays watching golf with his beloved French Bulldog. He was a fervent fan of the Dallas Cowboys and college football. Nick’s travels took him to Ireland, Portugal, Italy, Mexico, and several Baltic countries, enriching his life with diverse experiences.

Nick's final moments were spent in his favorite recliner, surrounded by his devoted wife and Frenchie, after an 18-month battle with pancreatic cancer.

Nick leaves behind a legacy of laughter, wisdom, and unwavering loyalty. His close friends, Charles Moore, Mark Cowles, Doug Atwood, Mike Rotherham, and Tom Burto, will forever remember his vibrant spirit.

A memorial service was held on June 13, 2024, in Port St. Lucie, Florida, with a special memorial at Port St. Lucie High School in the fall of 2024.

Ronald D. Clark, age 91, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 14, 2024 at Highland Park Care Center.

He was born January 26, 1933 in Box Butte County, Nebraska to Henry O. and Hazel E. (Ball) Clark.

He graduated from Hemingford High School in 1951.&nbsp; Following graduation, he worked in construction for a short time before proudly serving his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.&nbsp; He was honorably discharged and returned home and dedicated his life to farming on the family farm.&nbsp;

On August 21, 1958, he married Neoma F. Hoevet at the United Methodist Church in Crawford, Nebraska.

Ron’s commitment to the land and his hard work defined his career until his retirement in 2021.&nbsp; He was a member of the American Legion, VFW and the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by his wife, Neoma Clark of Alliance; his children, Kelly (Sandy) Clark of Alliance and Sherry (Craig) Mount of San Antonio, TX; his grandchildren, Shawna (Samuel) Gerwitz of San Antonio, TX, Briar Clark of Alliance, Blaze Clark of Torrington, WY, Seth Clark of Alliance, and Rhonda Clark of La Crosse, WI; and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Eldon and George Clark, and his sister, Lucille Egly.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, June 20, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery at Alliance.&nbsp; Reverend Greg Reed will officiate.

 Connie was born September 2, 1933 in Watertown, SD, to parents Albert Clive Moorehouse and Florence McDonald-Moorhouse. Connie grew up in White River, SD until her high school years when the family moved to Martin. Connie graduated from Bennett County High School in 1952. After High School, Connie remained in Martin taking a job at the local Bennett County Coop. It was during this time that she met John Slattery of Martin. 

John and Connie were married in 1955 and resided in Martin for several years until they were able to build a home on the Slattery family farm and ranch in 1957. John and Connie raised 4 children Joe, Jeff, Paul &amp; Jean. Besides raising four kids she spent many hours helping on the farm. She helped in the hay field, summer fallowing, working cattle, or wherever she was needed. 

Through the years Connie was involved in the Beta Sigma Pi sorority, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Legion Auxiliary and donated many hours of community service. In addition to the local Co-op, Connie also worked for over 30 years in the office of the Martin Livestock sale barn. She loved gardening and growing flowers, but she was best known for being an amazing cook. She was especially proud of her 5 grandchildren. Two doctors, two nurses, and a construction manager. Connie will be deeply missed by her family.

Connie was preceded in death by her parents Albert and Florence Moorhouse, brother Alfred Moorhouse and sister Helen Crosswait.

Connie is survived by her husband of 69 years John, her sons Joe (Lorna) Slattery, Jeff Slattery, Paul Slattery and daughter Jean (Brian) Kirk. Grandchildren, Casey Slattery, Brianna Slattery, John Paul Slattery (Kaytlyn), Melissa Slattery (Lonnie Lesmeister), Megan Slattery and great grandchildren Kase, Krew, Kaden, Reagan and Easton.

Funeral services will be held Saturday June 22nd at 10:00 a.m. at the new American Legion.

Walter (Wally) W. Mischnick went home to his Lord and Savior Thursday, June 13th, peacefully, surrounded by family after a courageous fight with dementia.

Wally was born in Alliance, Nebraska on November 5th, 1948. His parents were Walter A Mischnick and Hilda D (Probst) Mischnick. He attended school in Alliance and graduated from Alliance High School in 1966. He then attended college at Kearny State and the University of Nebraska. He graduated with a degree in construction science in 1971. After graduation he returned to Alliance to join the family construction business.&nbsp;

On July 8th, 1972, he married Jody (Wolff) Mischnick. To this union 2 sons were born, Christopher in 1976, and Timothy in 1978. They made their home in Alliance, NE where Wally worked with his brother (Ron) in the family construction business. Wally was part of the Parish Ministry Associates (PMA) program through St. John’s Lutheran Church. His faith and spirituality grew in many ways from this experience. His hobbies were hunting and fishing. Upon retirement he enjoyed watching his son (Chris) and nephew (Brian) continue the family construction business, visiting his grandchildren, and keeping in touch with lifelong friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister Ellen, brother Paul and wife Sanfra, and brother-in-law Bill Koester. He is survived by his wife Jody, son Christopher (Rhonda), son Timothy (Kiley). Also surviving siblings Marjarie (Mischnick) Koester, Ron Mischnick (Marlene), Carol (Mischnick) Seger (Kenneth), grandchildren William, Vivian, Jack and Cherokee, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be held Saturday, June 22nd at 2:00 PM, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Alliance NE. Memorials may be given to St. John’s Columbarium or Sullivan Hills Camp.

Theodore (Ted) H. Cottrell, 78, of Silver City, passed away of pancreatic cancer Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023, at his home, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Butte, Mont., the firstborn of Beverley and Harold Cottrell. Three brothers and two sisters later joined Ted in the family. After graduating from high school in Denver, Colo., Ted served in the U.S. Army and Air Force. Following his discharge, Ted married his high school sweetheart, Cathy Begler, and their children were born wherever Ted’s employment with the railroad took them. 

After more than 30 years of marriage, Cathy passed away. Ted retired and later moved to Silver City to be near his parents. There he met Susan Anderson and married for a second time. He and Susan spent two decades renovating homes in Silver City, two of which became their residences. Ted was very skilled in all aspects of construction, including design, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, welding and masonry. He was also adept at auto mechanics and restoration. Whenever Ted wasn’t building or fixing something he headed into the nearby Gila National Forest to hike with his dog, Gopher, and anyone else lucky enough to accompany him. Camping and enjoying the wonders of nature with Susan and Gopher throughout the Southwest were also on his agenda, as was traveling to connect with family. He was known for his energy, quick sense of humor, and love of the outdoors. 

Ted is survived by his wife, of the family home; his children, Brett (Diane) of Castle Pines, Colo., Chad (Rindy) of Paradise, Texas, Craig (Amber) of Alliance, Neb; stepdaughters, Lynne Turner (Dan) of Dartmouth, Mass., and Sheri Liebhart (Steve) of Hurley; and grandchildren: Jared, Nicole and Emily Cottrell, Aubry (Waytt) Redding, Mandi, Tegan, Trenton (Addison) Cottrell, Alex, Keaton and Carson Cottrell, Braylon and Mariele Turner and Isaac Liebhart. He had a special place in his heart for his nieces and nephews; his cousin, Mark Brenton; godson, Mik; and friends near and far. Ted was predeceased by his parents, his first wife, Cathy and niece, Jackie. 

Cremation has taken place at Baca’s Funeral Chapels. A Celebration of Life will take place in the picnic pavilion at Little Walnut Picnic Grounds in Silver City Saturday, June 29th, 2024 at 11am.

Larry Anthony Janicek was born in Kimball on November 20, 1956, the son of Richard and Donna (Schemm) Janicek. He was baptized and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kimball. He was raised and received his education in Kimball, graduating from Kimball County High School in 1975.

Following graduation, he worked in the oil fields of Kimball, Nebraska, and Douglas and Casper, Wyoming. He also worked for Stanco Oil Company and Gregory Oil Company. He married Laurie Ann Wickard, the love of his life, in December 1987. He farmed for many years for his uncle Duane Janicek, and retired from the City of Kimball in the street department in 2021.

Larry was a very hard-working man and enjoyed many things, including golfing, hot-rodding his GTOs, being outside, and mowing many yards throughout his life. He always claimed to be a jack of all trades and a master of none. He loved making people laugh through his favorite quotes like, "I've slept since then," or answering the phone by saying, "Joe's Bar."

&nbsp;Ruben Eugene (Gene) Siegfried, age 83, passed away peacefully at home on June 13, 2024. Gene was born on May 3, 1941, in the family home in Gering, Nebraska, to parents Mollie (Reifschneider) Siegfried and Ruben Siegfried.

Gene leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work and dedication. He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Patricia (Acker) Siegfried. He was a proud father to his three sons from his first marriage: James Siegfried of Scottsbluff, Steven Siegfried of Rochester Hills, Michigan, and Gerald (Jami) Siegfried of Aurora, Colorado. He was also a devoted stepfather to Janelle (Chuck) Schroeder of Gering and Becky (Tom) Horne of Scottsbluff.

Gene had a career as a government-certified welder for Lockwood Corporation, dedicating 25 years of his life to his craft. His talents extended beyond his professional life, showcasing a myriad of hobbies including drag racing, hunting, fishing, coin collecting, R.C. airplanes, and astronomy. He was an avid rockhound, outdoorsman and a proud member of organizations including NRA, Eagles, Elks, Scottsbluff Timing Association, West Nebraska Sportsman’s Association, Audubon Society, and the Panhandle Rock Club.

Known for his caring, quiet, and kind nature, Gene found joy in the simple pleasures post-retirement, especially spending time with his coffee group and enjoying hunting and fishing outings with his sons and grandsons. He cherished following his grandchildren to their numerous activities and celebrating their achievements.

Gene is also survived by his grandchildren: Alyssa Zwickl, Gage Siegfried, Kyle Schroeder, Trey Zwickl, Hunter Siegfried, Sophie Siegfried, Painsley Siegfried, and Blakely Horne. He was loved by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and special extended family Erik and Derik Eckhardt.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents Ruben and Mollie Siegfried, his brother Robert (Bob) Siegfried, and his daughter-in-law Holli Siegfried.

A funeral service in celebration of Gene’s life will be held at 2:30 PM on Monday, June 17, 2024, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Gering. Family and friends are welcome to attend and commemorate the life of a remarkable man who touched many lives. A memorial has been set up in honor of the American Heart Association.

Ruben Eugene (Gene) Siegfried (1941 - 2024)

Allan J. Gerk, 75, passed peacefully at his home with his family by his side after a battle with cancer on June 11, 2024.

He was born in Julesburg, Colorado on March 11, 1949, to Isidore and Mary (Lechman) Gerk. After Allan graduated from Julesburg High School he served as a distribution clerk for the US Army and was later honorably discharged.

Allan married Carol J Adamson, 01/01/1996 and moved to Alliance where Allan enjoyed his job caring for the Library, the Knight Museum and other various buildings for over 14 years until he retired. He always said his job with the City of Alliance was the best job he ever had. After retirement they enjoyed some time in Arizona and Colorado before settling in Scottsbluff, NE.

Allan was well known for his ability to always make light of any situation and his ever present humor and smile. Allan found a true passion for genealogy and would spend countless hours researching family lineage. He loved to tinker with stuff, start and sometimes finish projects and organize everything. Allan never met a kid he didn’t like and absolutely loved spending time with his grandkids and great grandkids.

Allan is survived by his loving wife, Carol of Scottsbluff, NE; four daughters and their families that he inherited through marriage. Terry Lee Steinacher, Sept. 1, 1943-June 7, 2024.

Preceded in death by parents Norman and Ethel (Chasdek) Steinacher. Survived by his sister Carole (Dawn) Steinacher, cousins and good friends, Jim Miller and Taylor Morava. Terry graduated from Milligan High School in 1961, received Bachelor and Masters degrees in Anthropology from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and a PhD in Archaeology from the University of Oklahoma. Terry was commissioned as an Air Force Lieutenant; later promoted to Captain and served as an intelligence officer in Vietnam. He spent most of his career as the Nebraska State Historical Preservationist with his office at Ft. Robinson. He resided in Crawford, Nebraska appreciating the beauty and history of the land. Terry enjoyed his books (especially history), his extensive and varied music collection, travels to Europe and Egypt, but most of all his golfing with Jim and Taylor and others up to the challenge. Terry gifted us with his goodness, generous spirit, and wry, dry sense of humor. And he was humble enough to call his little sister when encountering technical issues (usually got a good answer). A man of few words, yet he spoke volumes, he will forever be missed.

Terry Lee Steinacher (1943 - 2024)

Funeral services for Mildred (Millie) Wasserburger will be held beginning with a Vigil Service (Rosary) at 7:00 pm on Friday, June 14, 2024, and Funeral Mass at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at the Church of the Nativity in Harrison, Nebraska, with Father Arul Innaiah officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Harrison.

Millie passed away in her home on May 31, 2024, comforted with the loving care of family and Home Health and Hospice.&nbsp;

Millie was born on May 25, 1930, in Crawford, Nebraska, to Harry Andrew and Mary Frances (Geiser) Wasserburger. &nbsp;She grew up on the family ranch near Montrose, Nebraska. &nbsp;She and her sisters rode their ponies to attend elementary school at District #16. She also attended Assumption Academy in Chadron, Nebraska; Edgemont High School in Edgemont, South Dakota; and graduated in 1947 from Sioux County High School in Harrison, Nebraska. &nbsp;Following graduation, she attended National College of Business in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Millie's Catholic faith was her foundation. &nbsp;She was a devout and prayerful woman. &nbsp;She was baptized and confirmed at the Church of the Immaculate Conception at Montrose. &nbsp;After moving to Harrison she became a member of the Church of the Nativity and provided years of service as the organist. &nbsp;She was still climbing the stairs to the choir loft into her 80's to provide music for Masses. &nbsp;She was a member of St. Theresa's Altar Society.&nbsp;Millie's unwavering honesty was her trademark in her family's sale barn and ranching businesses. Millie loved being on the "sale barn circuit". She grew up attending sales with her parents. &nbsp;She partnered in/operated three livestock auction businesses. &nbsp;She also attended many other auctions while purchasing cattle for her own ranching operation. &nbsp;She made lasting friendships with people she worked with and customers throughout the western Nebraska and Wyoming area and also with buyers from farms and feedlots throughout eastern Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa and Kansas. &nbsp;Even after being unable to physically attend auctions due to age and infirmity, she avidly watched the video sales and especially loved getting local sale reports. &nbsp;She fondly recalled past customers and their cattle and how they performed year after year.

Millie also kept busy with other occupations through the years. &nbsp;She assisted getting easements from local landowners for the initial rural electrification of Sioux County; was a clerk in the Sioux County Treasurer's office; served as Sioux County Clerk, Assessor and Clerk of the District Court; and worked as hostess at Ft. Robinson State Park. &nbsp;She also assisted her family in their business ventures at the Snack Shack, Village Barn restaurant and Harrison Dance Pavilion.&nbsp;Family and friends were very important to Millie. &nbsp;She loved to dance and traveled around the area with friends to attend local social events. &nbsp;Millie maintained life-long friendships with her classmates and friends she met throughout the years. &nbsp;She enjoyed driving nieces and nephews to drive-in movies and dances. &nbsp;As her nieces and nephews grew older, she enjoyed attending their school, sports and music events. &nbsp;Millie was always there to provide loving support and assistance to all the generations of her family.

Millie is survived by her nieces and nephew: &nbsp;Patricia Federle, Rebecca Law, John Andrew (Holly) Federle and Mary LaDeene Swanson; great-nieces and nephews: Meggan Federle and son Ezra; Jessie (Chad) RoBards and children Conner, Daxton, Bailey, Levi and Ryan; TJ Boyd (Abby George) and children Ross, Reed, Vlad and Rose; Kassi Swanson; Jennifer Swanson and sons Brendan and Zac; Max (Nicole) Federle; Tim (LeAndra) Swanson and son Evan. &nbsp;Millie is also survived by many generations of Wasserburger and Geiser cousins.

Gerald was born October 19, 1931 in Mirage Flats, NE.

Gerald Letcher (1931 - 2024)

Robert J. Laeger, 89, of Mesa, Arizona, passed away peacefully at his home on May 21, 2024, surrounded by his loving wife and four daughters.

Bob was born on February 21, 1935, to John and Hazel Laeger in Ord, Nebraska. He began his education at a country school near Hemingford, Nebraska and completed grade school at the Seventh-day Adventist School. Bob attended high school at Platte Valley Adventist Academy in Shelton, Nebraska graduating in 1953. It was there that he met his beloved wife, Elaine Sherrill. They were married for 68 wonderful years.

After graduation, Bob moved to Denver, Colorado, where he played a role in the construction of Porter Adventist Hospital. In 1955, he enlisted in the United States Army where he was stationed in Washington, DC. Bob served in the White Coats, a unit known for their participation in medical research. Bob and Elaine were married on June 10, 1956.

In 1958, the couple returned to Hemingford, Nebraska, where Bob joined his father, John, in farming. In addition, Bob and John sold Pioneer Seed Corn where they continually were top in sales for the company and provided unmatchable customer service to his colleagues in the farming community. Bob was known for his meticulous attention to detail in his farming operation and his dedication to his family, friends, and community. Bob and Elaine were blessed with four daughters: Sherri, Julie, Lori, and Trish. Bob continued farming with passion until his retirement in 1999.

Upon retiring, Bob and Elaine moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, where they enjoyed the next chapter of their lives until 2014, when they relocated to Mesa, Arizona.

Bob is survived by his devoted wife, Elaine; daughters, Sherri, Julie, Lori, and Trish; sons-in-law, Lee Earnhardt, Mike Goebel and Jeff Reinert; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his sister, Elaine Jones; brother, Wayne Laeger and special nephew Brad Laeger. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Hazel Laeger.

Bob will be remembered for his hard work, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his family and friends. A memorial service will be held on June 15, 2024, at 2:00 pm at the Mesa Palms SDA church in Mesa, Arizona with burial to follow at a later date at the Hemingford Cemetery.

Bob's life was a testament to the values of love, dedication, and service. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.
