Nancy Lee Nissen Deselms, 93, died Thursday, February 15th at the Regent Park Nursing Home in Holyoke, Colorado.

Nancy was born May 28, 1930, in Oxford, Nebraska to William J. and Bernice (Rhynalds) Nissen. She graduated from Oxford High School, Oxford, Nebraska in 1948 and married her high school sweetheart Don Deselms in 1952. She attended Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska and taught elementary school in Lexington and Hemingford, Nebraska before beginning her career as a fulltime mother and homemaker as a mother of three children.

Nancy and Don moved to Chadron in 1963 where Don was employed at Chadron State College until his retirement in 1992. Nancy was active in her community as a 75-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Grace Episcopal Church. She enjoyed playing bridge, golfing, baking, gardening and refinishing and collecting antiques and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband Don of almost 60 years and her son Bert Deselms of Omaha. She is survived by her children Jay (Deb) Deselms of Platteville, Colorado, and Cyd (Rod) Hanson of Chappell, Nebraska, grandchildren Jessica Deselms (Jerry Feitz) of Ottawa, Kansas, Sarah Deselms of Omaha, Samantha (Kolbe) Pfingsten of Plymouth, Nebraska, Alexandra Deselms of Cody, Wyoming, and Lucas (Sierra) Hanson of Chappell, Nebraska. Six great-grandchildren, Maddison Deselms, Kherington, Kooper and Kora Pfingsten, and Sutton and Ashby Hanson. She is also survived by one sister, Carol Veldhuisen of Portland, Oregon, two brothers-in-law, Harold (Barb) Deselms of Pueblo, Colorado and Derald Deselms of Grand Island and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 450 Bordeaux Street, Chadron at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 26.

Beth Ann (Woods) Kime, 73, of rural Gordon, NE passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease and a recent hemorrhagic stroke. &nbsp;

Beth was born on November 8, 1950, to Vearl and Hazel (Lipe) Woods in St. Paul, Nebraska. &nbsp;She attended a rural elementary school and then attended St. Paul High School. &nbsp;Following graduation, Beth moved to Chadron, Nebraska and attended Chadron State College, majoring in art. &nbsp;While at Chadron State, she met a lifelong friend in Patricia (Kime) Decker. &nbsp;They were roommates and great friends. &nbsp;Pat brought Beth home with her one weekend and she met Pat’s older brother Steve, beginning a romance that would last for over 50 years until her death. &nbsp;Steve has said he is so grateful to his sister for bringing Beth home with her because he met his soulmate when he met Beth. &nbsp;

Beth married Steven P. Kime of rural Gordon on May 27, 1972. &nbsp; They lived on the Kime ranch and Beth became the ultimate ranch wife, helping Steve in the hayfield, caring for cows and calves, raising fresh food in the garden and taking care of the house and yard. &nbsp;Beth and Steve were blessed with four sons – John, David, Michael &amp; James – and she somehow managed to balance mothering those four active boys and still helping on the ranch. &nbsp;Beth was very proud of all her boys and her family brought her joy every day.

Beth also enjoyed crafts of all kinds and shared her knowledge and skills with all the children in her life. &nbsp;She knitted, crocheted, sewed, made quilts, did beadwork, sketched pictures and even wrote and illustrated a couple of books to share with her sons and other local children. &nbsp;She also played guitar and sang and taught the boys music. &nbsp;Beth loved the outdoors and nature and began fishing and camping at an early age with her dad. &nbsp;Beth and her dad taught Steve to fish, and she passed her love of the outdoors on to her sons too. &nbsp;The whole family enjoyed fishing year-round, and they also began participating in rendezvous in the area and attended Fur Trade Days in Chadron for many years. Beth even learned how to tan hides and made buckskin outfits for her and Steve to wear during these excursions. &nbsp;She also made baby moccasins for a few dear friends when they were expecting.

Beth was also an excellent baker. She made pies and the best homemade rolls and breads. She even took a class about cake decorating and made several wedding cakes for friends and family members. &nbsp;She shared that joy with children as well, having them pull a kitchen chair up to the counter to help as she patiently supervised or helping them to build and decorate the gingerbread houses she baked. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Beth is survived by her husband, Steve Kime of rural Gordon, son John Kime of Ridgefield, WA, son David Kime of rural Gordon, son Michael Kime (KyLee, J.D. and Orin) of Gordon and son James Kime of rural Gordon, sister Kathy (Woods) Bissell (Gary Bissell) of Casper, WY and numerous cousins. &nbsp;She is predeceased by her mother Hazel Woods, her father Vearl Woods, her grandparents and a number of aunts and uncles. &nbsp;

Ellee Amber Ferebee gave the initial impression of being incredibly shy and introverted. Like a butterfly, she could stay a comfortable distance from people and surroundings until she was ready to land. When she landed, she did so with passion, confidence and joy. She was very aware of the essence of Ellee and did not waiver from who she was. Ellee was funny! She always had a way to brighten the room

Ellee had amazing adoration for her best friends and siblings, Jaydon and Kaitlyn. She had passion for the family pets, Roxie, Hey-yo and Binx. She loved to dance, but in keeping with her persona, she chose to share that with a chosen few – family and friends. She loved to learn and was proud of her accomplishments. Though very quiet in school, she was obsessed with her kindergarten papers, organizing and saving every paper she brought home. Ellee loved her family and had great fun swimming, camping and hiking with them. She enjoyed trips to Toadstool Geologic Park, Jump Craze, Post Playhouse, Storybook Island and Chadron State Park.

Ellee was born December 26, 2017 and left this world February 8, 2024. She is survived by her parents, Jake and Katie Ferebee and siblings, Kaitlyn and Jaydon. Rocky Olson, age 67, of Hemingford, Nebraska, passed away peacefully and went to see Jesus on February 15, 2024.

Rocky was born on September 9, 1956 in Alliance, Nebraska to Merton and Helen (Lust) Olson. He attended Box Butte County School and Hemingford High School. He lived on a ranch in Sioux county his whole life, where he was happiest feeding and working with cattle. Rocky had a heart of gold, was very generous, and would help anyone at any time. Fishing and hunting were his favorite hobbies, alongside cheering on the Nebraska Cornhuskers. He enjoyed country western music and loved to dance.

Survivors include his brothers, Jim (Diane) Olson of Hemingford and Rick (Bethany) Olson of Scottsbluff; sisters, Lelo (Gary) Hennings of Severance, Colorado and Marlaine (Ted) Jacobs of Scottsbluff; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Merton and Helen Olson; sister-in-law, Linda Lou Olson; and niece, Delta Dawn Olson.

Services will be at a later time and memorials may be sent to Memorial Park Fund, Hemingford Community Credit Union, 801 Box Butte Ave, Hemingford, NE 69348.

Judith Rae Fisher, 80, of Scottsbluff, passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Cremation has taken place, and no services are scheduled at this time. It is respectfully requested that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in her name to the American Heart Association.

Judy was born in Greeley, CO Aug 10, 1943, to Donald and Mary Kiser of Wheatland, WY along with her ‘older’ twin brother, John. The family of five (5) lived on what was commonly known at the time as the 83 Martin Ranch where Don worked as a foreman for the 17,000-acre spread, and Mary was the cook along with cultivating most of the garden which provided for the ranch. At the age of six (6) the family found it necessary to leave their much-loved rural roots to provide more opportunities in education for their three (3) children, and so landed in Lincoln, NE.

Initially, an old farmhouse would be home, and a one (1) room school (District 43) provided an entry into their new environment. Don would labor tirelessly at work and then spend evenings building a house, completed within a year, which the family was able to move into in 1950 at 1225 Dakota Street, Lincoln, NE. 

In high school, Judy found she excelled in many sports including soft ball and synchronized swimming. She was a lifeguard at the local pool and enjoyed flagging and driving at the drag strip. She would later spend countless hours at the 23 Club baseball field umpiring Babe Ruth youth league games. 

Judy met and married her husband, Larry, in 1962, welcoming a daughter, Shannon, in 1964 and a son, Michael, in 1966. They would remain married for almost 60 years until Larry’s passing in March of 2021. Many people who knew Judy would describe her as a ‘straight shooter’, stubborn, polite, and kind. To her family she was Mom and Nannie, the ‘glue’, stubborn, solid, caring and loving. 

Judy is survived by her brother, John Sanford Kiser (Alicia), her children, Shannon (Al) and Michael (Michelle), grandchildren Brandon, Tony, Shea (Cody) and Rachel (Richard), several great grandchildren nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, Donald Leroy and Mary Nagel Kiser, her husband, Larry Gene Fisher and her sister, Donna Marie Chaikoff.

Judith Rae Fisher (1943 - 2024)

Howard L. Romick passed away peacefully Sunday, February 18, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.

Howard was born to David and Blanche (Meier) Romick December 24, 1939 at his home in Sioux County, NE. The family later moved to the Alliance, NE area. He attended the Alliance School District.&nbsp;

In 1963, Howard was drafted into the United States Army and served his country driving military trucks and training German Shepard dogs. He was honorably discharged in 1965.&nbsp;

On November 20, 1966 he was united in marriage at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alliance, NE to the true love of his life, Norma Brunkhardt. To this union three children were born.&nbsp;

Howard enjoyed rodeos, horses and livestock. During his younger and single days, Howard competed in the Bulldoging event. Some of Howard's fondest memories were his children competing in 4-H horse and cattle shows. He was very proudful of winning a top Beef Rate of Gain award of putting on 4.9 pounds per day on the steer. Howard also proud fully boasted of the 4-H Horse Show that all three of his children competed in and brought home all championship trophies in all events except for one. Howard's horses were always groomed to the hilt. He was once told his show horses were "spit shined and carried on a cloud".&nbsp;

Although these were some of Howard's most treasured memories, his greatest pride of his life was the deep love he shared with his wife of 57 years, his children, grandchildren and great grandson. They were all the "jewels in his crown".&nbsp;

Howard is survived by his wife Norma, his children Lora (John) Herian, Amy Nielson, and Chris (Leslie) Romick. Survivors also include grandchildren Rhett Herian and fiancée Kelsea Storkel, Jakob (Adriana) Herian, Caleb Nielson and fiancée Shelby Grimes, Kristen Romick and fiancée Dayde Belknap, Bret (Rylee) Schwaderer and great grandson Asher Herian. He is also survived by his sister Phyllis Henkel along with a host of several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters, son-in-law John Nielson and granddaughter Kimber Romick.&nbsp;

Memorial services will be Friday, February 23 at 10:00 a.m. at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Alliance, NE with Reverend Richard Mueller officiating. Burial will be at the Alliance Cemetery with military honors.

Romick passed away peacefully Sunday, February 18, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.Howard was born to David and Blanche (Meier) Romick December 24, 1939 at his home in Sioux County, NE. The family later moved to the Alliance, NE area. He attended the Alliance School District.&nbsp;In 1963, Howard was drafted into the United States Army and served his country driving military trucks and training German Shepard dogs. He was honorably discharged in 1965.&nbsp;On November 20, 1966 he was united in marriage at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Alliance, NE to the true love of his life, Norma Brunkhardt. To this union three children were born.&nbsp;Howard enjoyed rodeos, horses and livestock. During his younger and single days, Howard competed in the Bulldoging event. Some of Howard's fondest memories were his children competing in 4-H horse and cattle shows. He was very proudful of winning a top Beef Rate of Gain award of putting on 4.9 pounds per day on the steer. Howard also proud fully boasted of the 4-H Horse Show that all three of his children competed in and brought home all championship trophies in all events except for one. Howard's horses were always groomed to the hilt. He was once told his show horses were "spit shined and carried on a cloud".&nbsp;Although these were some of Howard's most treasured memories, his greatest pride of his life was the deep love he shared with his wife of 57 years, his children, grandchildren and great grandson. They were all the "jewels in his crown".&nbsp;Howard is survived by his wife Norma, his children Lora (John) Herian, Amy Nielson, and Chris (Leslie) Romick. Survivors also include grandchildren Rhett Herian and fiancée Kelsea Storkel, Jakob (Adriana) Herian, Caleb Nielson and fiancée Shelby Grimes, Kristen Romick and fiancée Dayde Belknap, Bret (Rylee) Schwaderer and great grandson Asher Herian. He is also survived by his sister Phyllis Henkel along with a host of several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters, son-in-law John Nielson and granddaughter Kimber Romick.&nbsp;Memorial services will be Friday, February 23 at 10:00 a.m. at the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Alliance, NE with Reverend Richard Mueller officiating. Burial will be at the Alliance Cemetery with military honors.

Howard L. Romick  (1939 - 2024)

Richard Henry Keller, aged 77, passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at the UT Medical Center in Knoxville, TN. He was born on August 15, 1946, in Alliance, Nebraska to Lloyd and Edith (Neff) Keller. Richard was raised on their ranch in the Sandhills of Nebraska. He graduated from Garden County High School in 1964.

Richard's life was marked by service and dedication. He joined the U.S. Army on May 12, 1970, and was qualified for Special Forces. Serving in Vietnam as a member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade, he demonstrated courage and commitment. Transferring to the U.S. Army Reserve on December 22, 1971, he continued to honorably serve until his discharge on May 11, 1976.

Following his military service, Richard went on to study engineering at the University of Nebraska-Kearney, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1975 and embarked on a successful career as a draftsman and estimating engineer. He contributed his talents to Chief Industries in Grand Island, NE, and Lockheed Martin/Martin Marietta in Oak Ridge, TN.

Richard is survived by his three daughters, Trudy (Chris) Whitson of Louisville, TN, Tiffany (Jeff) Adkins of Middleburg, FL, Teresa (Matt) Holmes of McDonough, GA, and his eight grandchildren Clayton, Ryan, Evan, Elise, Dylan, Nicholas, Gregory, and Jamison. He is also survived by his brother, Arnold (Jeanette) Keller, several cousins, and his nephew Patrick Keller. He was preceded in death by his father, Lloyd Keller, his mother, Edith Keller, and his nephew, Jeffrey Keller.

A man of resilience and strength, Richard will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Graveside services will be held at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery in Alliance, Nebraska, on Friday, February 23, 2024, at 1:00 PM. Visitation will be at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home Friday, February 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend and pay their respects to this honorable veteran and beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend. Richard Henry Keller (1946 - 2024)

Scott R. Bates, a loving father, proud grandfather, and respected member of the Alliance community, passed away on Friday, February 16, 2024, at his home.&nbsp; He was 73 years old.

Scott was born on October 11, 1950, to George E. and Berniece (Coleman) Bates in North Platte, Nebraska.&nbsp; The family moved to Hemingford in 1951 where he spent his elementary school years.&nbsp; His family would later move to Alliance in 1961, where he graduated from Alliance High School in 1969.&nbsp; Following graduation, Scott enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country during the Vietnam War as a weapons mechanic.&nbsp; His service included a one year tour of duty in Vietnam and he was honorably discharged on December 14, 1973.&nbsp; He was proud to be a veteran and was extremely honored to receive the Quilt of Valor on July 4, 2022.

On June 20, 1970 he married Linda C. Nuss in Alliance and to this union his two children, Eric and Shay were born.

Following his military discharge, Scott returned to Alliance and attended college in Scottsbluff before attending and graduating from the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science in 1977.&nbsp; He then returned to Alliance and began his career alongside his father at Bates-Landa Funeral Home.&nbsp; He was dedicated to providing compassionate care to grieving families during their most difficult times and spent over 40 years doing so.

Outside of work, Scott had a passion for cars, frequently trading and enjoying a new car.&nbsp; He held a private pilot’s license, had a love of aviation and found solace in flying.&nbsp; He enjoyed riding motorcycles and cherished moments spent camping and boating at the lake with his family or attending his grandchildren’s activities.&nbsp; He took immense pride in the accomplishments of his grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, the Eagles Club, and the National and Nebraska Funeral Director’s Associations.

He is survived by his children and their families, Eric and Beth Bates of Alliance and their children, Brooke (Evan), Ethan and Luke,&nbsp; and Shay and Gerald Armstrong of Lincoln and their children, Aden, Anna, Lilli and Nora; and his children’s mother, Linda Bates of Alliance.&nbsp; He is also survived by his brother, David Bates of Yuba City, CA; his sister, Georgia (Jon) Lauterbach of Tampa, FL; his niece, two nephews, and many extended family members and friends.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister-in-law, Judy Bates.

A celebration of Scott’s life will be held Thursday, February 22, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.&nbsp; Mother Kim Culp and Father Bryan Ernest will officiate.&nbsp; Burial with military honors will be in the Alliance Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m. with the family being present to greet friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Gary L. Hashman of Alliance peacefully passed away Sunday, February 11, 2024, at Monument Health Hospital in Rapid City, SD with family by his side.&nbsp; His passing follows an over four-year battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis.

He was born on August 15, 1938, in Alliance, NE to Frank and Pearl (Bacon) Hashman.&nbsp; On April 30, 1961, he was united in marriage to Sharon J. Henkel at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Alliance.

Gary served in the U.S. Army from February 14, 1961, and was honorably discharged on February 13, 1963. He then returned to Alliance and worked for Alliance Consumers Cooperative and Western Potato before he began farming in 1975. During his farming career he received four Top 10 Beet Grower Awards from Western Sugar Company. He was an active member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church serving on the Board of Trustees, Stewardship Committee and as an usher.&nbsp; He also served on the Board of Directors for Westco Inc. from 1989 to 1997 and served as vice-chairman from 1992 to 1996.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sharon his children, Gail Hystad of Colorado Springs, CO, Dena (Mike) Wnorowski of Bayfield, CO and Andy Hashman of Longmont, CO.&nbsp; He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brandon Hystad, Ariel Curtis, Eli Monyek, Faith Hystad and Ruby Hashman and his nephews, Steve Stone, Dave Stone and Tom Hashman.&nbsp; In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Lois Nuss, his brother, Wayne Hashman, and his nephew, Ron Hashman.

Memorial services will be Saturday, February 24 at 2:00 p.m. at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church with Reverend Richard C. Mueller and Reverend Sean Daugherty officiating, followed by a gathering at Westside Event Center.&nbsp; A committal service will be Monday, February 26, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church or the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.

Kimberly Rubottom, 45, a beloved wife, daughter, and sister, passed away on February 7, 2024. At her request, cremation has taken place. Funeral services will be held on February 17 at 11:00 AM, at Calvary Memorial Church in Gering, NE with Pastor Gary Hashley officiating. 

A private service will be held, at a later date, in Ainsworth, Ne. Interment will be in Ainsworth Cemetery. Kimberly was born March 28, 1978, in Alliance, NE. She lived there and attended school through the fourth grade and then moved with her family to Scottsbluff, NE. She graduated from Scottsbluff High School in May of 1996. While in high school she excelled in volleyball and track. She enrolled and attended WNCC for a year and then transferred to Chadron State College where she attended and graduated Cum Laude in 2000, with a degree in medical technology systems. She gained employment with a firm in Denver, CO where she traveled to Connecticut setting up medical technology systems. She continued working in CO and then moved back to Scottsbluff in 2016 to be closer to family. Kimberly married Troy Rubottom on July 26, 2019. They loved life and enjoyed each other’s company. They each had a love for the outdoors. They had numerous adventures in traveling, cooking, golfing, which Kim loved to drive the golf cart. She devoured sushi but detested oysters on the half shell. They loved spending time with family. At the age of three, she became a roller-skating champion earning silver medals in freestyle. She loved being small enough to go under the limbo bar so low no one could match her. Her favorite video game was Ms. Pac- Man. She was too short to reach the controller so she would get an empty 5-gallon bucket to stand on. She has always been a very determined person. As an adult, her passion for children and the less fortunate continued to grow. She always had a smile and kind words to say to those feeling downtrodden.

&nbsp;Her favorite pastimes were gardening, creating savory dishes, and working tediously on one-thousand-piece puzzles. She would always come through the garage door calling out, “Mart Mart” and “Son.” Her favorite name for Troy was “Mahnie” and he called her “Lady”. There are not enough pages to express how amazing she was. 

She is survived by her husband, Troy, her parents, Jim and Irene McDermott, her sister, Jacci Koerner (Tony), 5 nephews and 4 nieces whom she dearly loved spending time with. Kim had a strong appreciation and heartfelt love for all of her family members. She will be greatly missed and treasured in all of our hearts. 

We know we will see her again! At age 12 she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and was baptized. Then recently she rededicated her life to Christ.

&nbsp;Ruby Elaine (White) Batterman, 75, formerly of Ogallala, passed away Friday, February 9, 2024, at Hemingford Community Care Center in Hemingford, NE where she resided the&nbsp; last four years.

Ruby was born on December 29, 1948, in Grant Nebraska to Kenneth and Esther (Dorrow) White.&nbsp;

Ruby grew up helping her father with ranching. Ruby graduated from High School in 1967 from Lewellen, Ne. Ruby met Gary Ribble and married in 1967. From this union they had Lisa (Ribble) Anderson and Mark Ribble. The couple later divorced. Ruby met Bob Batterman and married in 1999 residing in Ogallala, NE until moving to Beatrice Care Center in 2018. After the passing of her husband, Bob, Ruby moved to Hemingford to be closer to family in 2020. Ruby was well known in Ogallala; working for Dairy Queen, Ogallala Hospital, Hokes Café, Pump-n-Pantry, Union 76, Castles and Shopko. Ruby loved to serve the public. She met many people from different walks of life and enjoyed helping others.&nbsp; Ruby loved to garden. She enjoyed cooking and canning. Ruby also loved to watch football, especially the Huskers. She would be cheering on the team for a hopeful victory.

Ruby is survived by her children: daughter Lisa (Darren) Anderson of Lewellen; son, Mark (Candace) Ribble of Alliance. Stepchildren: Debbie Batterman; Chet Batterman. Grandchildren: Michelle (Scott) Kilsdonk; Ryan (Kaitlyn) Anderson; Joel Anderson; Corry Ribble; Madison Ribble; Step grandchildren: Taressa (Samuel) Mendoza; Taiton Benham; Tevon Benham; Many great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews;&nbsp;Ruby was preceded in death by parents Kenneth and Esther White,&nbsp; brother Lloyd White; husband Gary Ribble; husband Bob Batterman; stepdaughter Roxanne Batterman. Ruby was well loved wherever she went, leaving many cherished memories.

Visitation will be held, Wednesday, February 14, 2024 from 1:00 to 5 p.m. in the Draucker Funeral Home Chapel in Ogallala.  </figure>&nbsp;Ruby Elaine (White) Batterman, 75, formerly of Ogallala, passed away Friday, February 9, 2024, at Hemingford Community Care Center in Hemingford, NE where she resided the&nbsp; last four years.Ruby was born on December 29, 1948, in Grant Nebraska to Kenneth and Esther (Dorrow) White.&nbsp;Ruby grew up helping her father with ranching. Ruby graduated from High School in 1967 from Lewellen, Ne. Ruby met Gary Ribble and married in 1967. From this union they had Lisa (Ribble) Anderson and Mark Ribble. The couple later divorced. Ruby met Bob Batterman and married in 1999 residing in Ogallala, NE until moving to Beatrice Care Center in 2018. After the passing of her husband, Bob, Ruby moved to Hemingford to be closer to family in 2020. Ruby was well known in Ogallala; working for Dairy Queen, Ogallala Hospital, Hokes Café, Pump-n-Pantry, Union 76, Castles and Shopko. Ruby loved to serve the public. She met many people from different walks of life and enjoyed helping others.&nbsp; Ruby loved to garden. She enjoyed cooking and canning. Ruby also loved to watch football, especially the Huskers. She would be cheering on the team for a hopeful victory.Ruby is survived by her children: daughter Lisa (Darren) Anderson of Lewellen; son, Mark (Candace) Ribble of Alliance. Stepchildren: Debbie Batterman; Chet Batterman. Grandchildren: Michelle (Scott) Kilsdonk; Ryan (Kaitlyn) Anderson; Joel Anderson; Corry Ribble; Madison Ribble; Step grandchildren: Taressa (Samuel) Mendoza; Taiton Benham; Tevon Benham; Many great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews;&nbsp;Ruby was preceded in death by parents Kenneth and Esther White,&nbsp; brother Lloyd White; husband Gary Ribble; husband Bob Batterman; stepdaughter Roxanne Batterman. Ruby E. (White) Batterman (1948-2024)

Lucinda “Cindy” Kay Porter (Houser), 69, of Alliance, NE, passed away at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, NE on February 7, 2024.&nbsp; Cindy was born in Lincoln, NE on August 13, 1954, to Glen and Patty (Hoefs) Houser.&nbsp; She cherished her childhood on the family farm, actively participating in 4-H activities, and always had her face buried in a book.&nbsp;

Cindy graduated from Waverly High School in 1972 before pursuing higher education at Chadron State College.&nbsp; While attending college, Cindy met her lifelong partner, John Porter, whom she married in Crawford, NE on May 24, 1975.&nbsp; Together, they raised three children.&nbsp; Cindy received her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Chadron State College in 1987.&nbsp; She worked at Farm Service Agency for 27 years; serving as President of the National Association of Support Employees and received numerous recognitions and awards during her extensive service.&nbsp; Cindy especially enjoyed the time she worked in Washington, D.C. and taking her children to visit Smithsonian museums and monuments while she was in D.C.

Cindy was admired for her talent and intellect, as well as her hobbies which included sewing her children's Halloween costumes, completing crossword puzzles, and acing Jeopardy clues.&nbsp;She enjoyed travelling and especially enjoyed her numerous trips to Hawaii and visiting as many State Capitals as she could, often convincing John to veer several miles off their path to make a special stop at a landmark.

In addition to her spouse and mother, Cindy is survived by her children: Shane (Melissa) Porter of Portland, TX; Amy (Ryan) Nagaki of Alliance, NE; and Carrie (Shon) Townsend of Alliance, NE.&nbsp; She is also survived by her grandchildren:&nbsp; Alexandra Porter-DeVoogd of Dallas, TX; Cameron (Carissa) Nagaki of Alliance, NE; Nolan Nagaki of Alliance, NE; Jennifer Wilson of Portland, TX; Tatiana Blan of Portland, TX; Sloan Nagaki of Alliance, NE; and Max Porter of Portland, TX; as well as her great-grandchild, Aria Nagaki, her three siblings, and multiple extended family members.

Cindy was preceded in death by her father and her parents-in-law.&nbsp; She will be remembered for her quick wit, unwavering devotion to her grandchildren, and her love for life’s finer things, which she delighted in sharing with her family and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, February 19, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance, NE.&nbsp; Father Matt Koperski will officiate.&nbsp; A reception will follow at the West Side Events Center.&nbsp;

James W. "Bill" Phelps, 97, of Crawford, Nebraska passed away at Chadron Community Hospital on January 30, 2024.

Bill was born in Bellevue, Nebraska on November 18, 1926 to John Orwen Phelps and Signe Emelia (Peterson) Phelps. He was a veteran of the US Navy having served from 1944 to 1946. 

Bill graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from Iowa State University in 1951. He worked for Bell Laboratories from graduation until his retirement in 1983.

Bill was an avid horseman having bred and raised American Quarter Horses for over 4 decades. He was notorious for his passion for the breed and his legacy lives on in the many horses born to Phelps Quarter Horses. He owned ranches in Longmont, Colorado, Hudson Colorado, and Belmont, Nebraska.

Bill is survived by his son, John Phelps and daughter-in-law Kate Luby-Phelps of Arlington, Texas, his daughter Kris Phelps of Houston Texas, and his daughter Leigh Koldeway of Firestone, Colorado. He is also survived by his two sisters, four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Lowell Neel Taylor February 24th, 1939- February 7th, 2024. 

Neel Taylor, 84, of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, passed away peacefully at his home, in the same place he was born, on Wednesday morning, February 7th. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Neel was a Navy and Army veteran. He spent 5 years in the Navy and 6 months in the Army. His oldest daughter, Loretta, and only son, Michael, followed in his footsteps by serving in the Navy. Neel loved when his children and grandchildren visited him every summer for the past 18 years. He loved to play putt, putt, and listen to music while we were there. He adored all the action from his seat on the front porch, all while smoking his beloved cigarettes. He loved his cigarettes and Pepsi!!! And not to forget he loved watching every sport there is to watch, especially tennis and golf! Neel also loved his niece, Rory's, delicious meals she would bring over for him quite often.

He is survived by his wife Juanita Taylor, daughter's Loretta Taylor Ferretti and husband Chris Ferretti; Michelle Taylor Pond and Husband Chris Pond; Son Michael Neel Taylor and wife Tarice Taylor. Grandchildren Ashley Giselle Ferretti, Caitlyn Elizabeth Ferretti, Harmony June Pond, Daisy May Pond, and only grandson Taylor Douglas Pond. All reside in North Carolina, except his son, who resides outside of New Orleans. And lots of nieces and nephews.

And with a very special thanks to his family caretakers niece, Rory Taylor Jaramillo and family, and brother in-laws John Enright, Jerry Johnson, and Jack Johnson.

At his request, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life service will take place at a later date. Carl was united in marriage to Pam Templar on March 14, 1987 and they made their home in Scottsbluff, NE. Carl worked for the State of Nebraska Department of Roads for 29 years retiring in 2009. He loved to hunt and fish and shared that passion with many friends and family. Carl was the BEST “Uncle” to all of the kids in his life. It didn’t matter if they were family or friends. He loved them all unconditionally. Carl had many special people in his life, but especially his dear friends Patty &amp; Rick Valentine, “Daughter” Tifani Franklin, and “Granddaughters” Hailey &amp; Emily Franklin, who were also their God Daughters.

Survivors include his wife, Pam; Brothers, Bill (Anne), and Ed (Lisa); Sisters, Andrea Gonzales, Trudy Ziegler, and Madeline Reynoso; Mother-In-Law, Treva Templar; Brothers-In-Law, Bill LeMaitre, Bill Templar, and Jay (Rhonda) Templar; Sisters-In-Law, LeAnn (Mike) Grasmick, and Karen (Rick) Mortimore; and many nieces and nephews and extended family members.

Dawn Raskiewicz (1962 - 2024)

Edwarda L. Martinez, 91, of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, passed away Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at her home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 9, 2024, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Scottsbluff with Fr. Joseph Thambi as celebrant. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery near Scottsbluff. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, February 8, 2024, at Reverence Funeral Parlor in Scottsbluff. The Rosary will be recited beginning at 7 p.m. The services will be live-streamed and recorded to Edwarda’s obituary page viewable at www.reverencefuneralparlor.com.

Edwarda was born October 13, 1932, to Serapio and Amalia (Puentes) Lozoya. She grew up in the Mitchell Valley area, attending many rural schools until the sixth grade. Edwarda then had to quit school and begin working with her other siblings to help their parents make ends meet. Her father passed while she was very young, leaving the older kids to help take care of the family. She later worked at the local potato cellars for a while before spending almost thirty years at Midwec, also known as Charles Industries.

Edwarda met and married John G. Martinez, the love of her life. She spent her entire adult life with John and continued to love him deeply even after his passing nearly 25 years ago. They had no children of their own, but they raised several foster children. &nbsp;A few stayed in contact with Edwarda, and in addition she was blessed with foster grandchildren. Edwarda also acted as “Mom” for many nephews and nieces along the way.&nbsp;

She was a devoted Christian, attending Our Lady of Guadalupe Church for many years.

Her presence among our family will be missed. Edwarda’s ability to see the big picture and figure out “how to do life” as she called it, was how she kept things in perspective for us. Her large heart and smile will be greatly missed as well. We love her and will always carry her in our hearts. She left permanent marks in everyone’s heart that she touched.

Survivors include her two sisters, Martina and Abundia; many nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, and grandkids who will forever have her in their hearts; and her beloved fur-baby, Chiweenie.

She left permanent marks in everyone’s heart that she touched.Survivors include her two sisters, Martina and Abundia; many nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, and grandkids who will forever have her in their hearts; and her beloved fur-baby, Chiweenie.

Benjamin “Ben” Castinado Jr., formerly of Scottsbluff, passed away Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at his home in Reno, Nevada at the age of 86. &nbsp;

Ben was born March 2, 1936, to Benjamin and Otila Castinado. Raised in Scottsbluff, Ben received his education in the Scottsbluff School system, graduating from Scottsbluff Senior High School in 1955. Ben met his high school sweetheart, Billye J. Murphy, in his Spanish class and they were married shortly out of high school on June 6, 1955. They celebrated their 65th&nbsp;wedding anniversary on June 6, 2020.&nbsp;

Ben began his early career as a linotype operator with the Scottsbluff Star-Herald. He eventually obtained a management position with the State of Nebraska Labor Department for many years, later retiring from that position. In retirement he worked as a Spanish speaking interpreter for the Scottsbluff County Court System. Additionally, he spent several years traveling around the country as a mall Santa which he absolutely loved.&nbsp;

Throughout his life, Ben was extremely community oriented and was a member of numerous civic organizations in Scottsbluff, including Jaycees, Knights of Columbus, Boy Scouts and was a volunteer with Hospice for many years just to name a few. Ben was extremely proud of his Mexican heritage and worked throughout his life promoting Hispanic culture within the Panhandle, including teaching Hispanic history classes at UNL and within the Panhandle school system. He always said one of his greatest achievements was being named Grand Marshall of Cinco de Mayo in Scottsbluff.

Ben is survived by his sister, Lupe Battersby of Seattle, WA; sons, Benjamin (Shelley) Castinado of Lincoln, NE, Barton (Steve) Castinado of Reno, NV, and Brent (Cathy) Castinado of Omaha, NE; son-in-law, Ron Nix of Higginsville, MO; grandchildren, Nancy Le of Lincoln, NE, Jessica Furrer of Fort Collins, CO, Amanda Gealy of Gering, NE, Sarah Green of Beaverton, OR, Abby Nix of Lone Jack, MO, John Nix of Lawrence, KS, and Brett Castinado, Brock Castinado, Kristy Pietro and Phillip Katchaturian all of Omaha, NE. Ben is also survived by numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Ben was preceeded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Otila Castinado; wife, Billye J. Murphy Castinado; sons, Brett Ryan Castinado and Bradley Ray Castinado; daughter, Jennifer Castinado Books; brothers, Henry, Louis and Joe; and sisters, Helen, Katheryn, Caroline, Vera, Stella and Carmen.&nbsp;

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Scottsbluff, Nebraska with Fr. Rayappa Konka officiating. Inurnment will be held at Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff following the Mass. A Rosary will be recited beginning at 9:30 a.m. that morning at the church. Adeline “Lilo” Palomo of Scottsbluff Nebraska passed peacefully at home on February 1, 2024 surrounded by her loved ones. A viewing will take place Thursday February 8th from 3-6 pm at Dugan &amp; Kramer funeral home in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Funeral services will be on Friday, February 9th at 10:00 am at Dugan Kramer. Burial will follow at West Lawn Cemetery in Gering.

Lilo was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Bernardo and Aurelia (Zamarripa) Palomo . Lilo dedicated her life to nursing &amp; caretaking; caring for others was her passion. Lilo married Stephen Fiala and of that union had a daughter; Adele Fiala. She remarried Rod Horst and spent the rest of her life with him, from that union they had a son Eric Horst.

Lilo also had a passion for carpentry, gardening, landscaping, and D.I.Y. Projects. She loved music and dancing, she always went above and beyond for everyone. She was so strong in her faith reading her bible daily. Her smile and laugh were captivating and will be missed. She truly adored her children Adele and Eric; grandchildren, Xavier, Aydin, Kylee, Adrik, and Bella. She cherished her great-grandchildren, Giovanni and Naelani.

Survivors include her husband, Rod Horst; daughter, Adele Fiala; son, Eric (Teya) Horst; siblings, Bernard Palomo, Julian (Della) Palomo, Rudy (Lucy) Palomo, Angie (Abel) Renteria, Pedro Palomo Sr., Henry Palomo, and Patricia (Isidro) Morales; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He attended the University of Denver Law School for one year and then the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO (Colorado State Teachers College) graduating with a Bachelor of Education degree in 1969.While in Greeley he met Mary Lu Cherry. They married in 1970 and resided in the Scottsbluff Valley area where Mary Lu taught elementary school and were involved in various business ventures in the area. Mary Lu passed away in 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife of 31 years; his mother and father, sister Susan and numerous beloved aunts and uncles; nephew Christipher (Tofer) Brunick; maternal grandmother Maude Douglas; maternal great grandmother Alice Fair and special extended family members and long-time business partners Mary and Jerry Misner. 

Russ is survived by two nieces and a nephew and their families; numerous great nieces and nephews; cousins and special extended family members Steve and Rhonda Misner of Wichita Falls, TX and their family and Brian and Rose Mary Misner of Arlington, TX and their family.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Donald E. “Merc” Mercer passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2024 at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance.&nbsp; He was 91.

He was born April 9, 1932 at Devils Lake, North Dakota to Leslie and Sarah (Ackerman) Mercer. He farmed with his dad during his high school years and before entering the service.&nbsp; He enlisted in the U.S. Army on February 11, 1954 and was honorably discharged on February 10, 1956. He then entered Army Reserve for a total of 8 years of service. He was an over 50 year member of the American Legion in Chadron.

Don was married to Myrtle Swanson and they had two sons, Howard and David. They would later divorce.&nbsp; On December 28, 1967 he was united in marriage to Treva (Kirkpatrick) Daugherty.&nbsp; Don worked in a variety of fields including custom combining for many years, over the road truck driver; he worked for Chief Industries in Grand Island for 10 years and also sold insurance.&nbsp;&nbsp; With his wife Treva they owned and operated an ice cream shop in Kearney for many years.&nbsp; He and Treva returned to Alliance in 1992 and operated their farm north of Alliance. Don truly enjoyed flying his airplane as well as farming, raising cattle and fixing things on the farm.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Treva, his sons, Howard and David and his sister, Doris Poswinski.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, , John and Lois Mercer of Lakota, ND, his step-son, Jim Daugherty of Overland Park, KS and his cousin, Alice and Mark Walker of Stillwater, MN.

Graveside service will be Tuesday, February 13 at 2:00 p.m. at the Alliance Cemetery. Reverend Russ Seger will officiate.&nbsp; Memorials may be given to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Richard (Dick) Wayne Boness, passed away on Friday, February 2, 2024, at the age of 87, at Highland Park Memory Unit.

He was born on February 25, 1936, to William (Jake) and Louise (Coupens) Boness in Alliance, NE. Dick was a gifted athlete who carried his passion for education and athletics throughout his life. He attended St. Agnes Academy in Alliance, NE, and pursued higher education at Chadron State College, Chadron, NE.

At Chadron State College, Dick lettered in four sports-football, basketball, track and baseball. He excelled as an athlete in both football and track. While earning his Bachelor's degree in Education, he later pursued and achieved a Master's in Education Administration. In 1985, he was proudly inducted into the Chadron State Athletic Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class. Additionally, in 2019, he received the honor of induction into the Alliance Public Schools Hall of Fame as a Contributor for his dedicated service to Alliance High School.

In 1960, Dick married Lorraine Holthus, and together they had four children. Survived by his wife Lorraine, Brett (Teresa) Boness, the late Bernadine (Jon) Briggs, Brigit (Jeff) Harris, and Bill Boness (fiancé Kelly Cox), Dick is also survived by his grandchildren: Erika (Brian) Reed of Junction City, OR; Erinn Merrill (fiancé Storm Petersen); Jon (Beth) Briggs of Cheyenne, WY; Zach (Nicole) Boness of Gering, NE; Derek (Becky) Harris and Matt (Olivia) Harris of Gering, NE; Lacy (Dallas) Helms; Josh Boness of Lincoln, NE; Megan Boness (fiancé Levi Burdick) of Cheyenne, WY;&nbsp; Beau Boness and Bella Boness and great-grandchildren, totaling 18. Also surviving are brother-in-law Tom Romick, sister-in-law’s Dorothy Holthus,and Jackie Holthus, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Willetta and Frank Dye as well as many nieces and nephews.

Kevin Cyle McFarland was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska on November 4th, 1974 to Kenneth and Glenda McFarland. He died peacefully in his home on Wednesday, January 24th in Alliance, Nebraska.

Kevin was preceded in death by his father, two uncles, an aunt, his paternal grandparents, his beloved wife Constance, his brother Phillip, and his maternal grandfather Glen Ward. He is survived by his mother Glenda and stepfather Doug Pratt, two aunts, an uncle, his brothers Nick (Sarah) and Jed (Heidi), and his grandmother Jessie Ward.

Kevin and Constance were married on July 7th, 2003. He was a loving and devoted father to three sons: Jeffrey (Tristen), Alexander, and Damon McFarland. Ever the family man, he is also survived by five stepchildren from his union with Constance, numerous grandchildren including Leo Nail, Kenny (Yesenia), Allie, and Ashley Mekolon, Hunter and Morticia McFarland, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and great-grandchildren.

Kevin's approach to life was punctuated by bravery, loyalty, and resilience. Despite the challenges he encountered, Kevin maintained a warm, compassionate spirit and never failed to offer help to those who needed it. His kindness touched the lives of many, and his dependability meant he was always willing to put others before himself.

Kevin will be remembered as the one you could call in a pinch, a do-it-yourself solver of problems with a curious mind and an artistic soul. Always eager to learn or to try something new, Kevin's life and the way he chose to live it will leave a lasting legacy in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. May his memory continue to inspire and bring comfort to those who mourn his loss.
